As someone Who has suffered depression I get why in the dancing scene they all of suden decided to make the son sad. It happened to me a lot. It’s Just the moment una which you realize you are having great time, but it Just feels empty, or you compare that to everything you are going through and it turns to be a bit of a melancholic moment. It’s weird but it actually happens a lot

Yeah people are upset that the movie actually depicts how relentlessly sad people can be. It's like that want the standard Hollywood resolution which isn't realistic at all.

I was the best man at one of my friend's wedding. I was dancing all night. But all of a sudden I was thinking about my mother who is currently on treatment for cancer. It gave me the same effect the character had. I was having so much fun but her being in this situation hit me so hard, and it really felt overwhelming.

I like that. It reminds me of a conductor I sang with who always emphasized that there are no *bad* choices, but there are *inappropriate* choices. I appreciate that kind of restraint in criticism. Well said, Sir.

I just saw the film today and I thought it was great. 4 stars out of 5 for me. Jackman is so good in it. I don’t understand the hatred for this one. I would’ve liked more understanding of the son’s psychological issues, but it didn’t take away from the emotional richness of the characters, scenes and performances for me.

My money is on Everything, Everywhere All at Once. It wasn’t really on anyone’s radar in the way a Spielberg or an Iñárittu movie is prior to its release, but when it was released and both audiences and critics loved it, it’s started to increasingly become part of the Oscar conversation. It might be too abstract of a movie to win the academy of mostly old white men, but we’ll see.

When I was at my most depressed, I didn’t really cry around people. I just had a vacant face and monotone voice. I just didn’t feel anything other than tiredness. Crying felt like a relief at points. Hearing that the kid is just in a constant state of almost crying is… interesting.
Oh! And I heard about the ending. It sounds like Mommy did a similar thing but better.

Yeah I had a feeling the Son was going to be bad… i know that Zeller comes from the theater where the emotions of characters have to be heightened in order to convey it to the entire audience. and that theatre-style of “overacting” worked really well when he directed the Father because the emotions that can come from struggling w/ dementia (feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, enraged) are all heightened emotions by nature… but depression is not typically that way.
depression is just hard to depict on screen in general, unless the story shows you what the character was like prior to becoming depressed so you have something to compare, it’s hard to pick up on because some people just have apathetic dispositions. Zeller maybe should have gotten some input from a mental health professional on how to authentically portray depression on screen.

For me, the dance scene is great because it perfectly portrays what a person with depression experiences… It is being “happy, enjoying” but a moment of reality suddenly comes to you and you remember all the pain you have. It happens exactly how you see it in the movie.
It's not that they didn't let the father have a moment of happiness with his son, it's that they wanted us to understand that the son's suffering does not stop at any time.

I saw this at TIFF on Monday night. I purposely avoided the Venice reviews because it was my most anticipated film for TIFF 2022. I agree with your review but would rate it maybe 6/6.5 at the highest. The Father was my favourite film of 2020 and with such a stellar cast, I had high expectations. I found myself rolling my eyes at certain scenes and some of the dialogue was unnatural and even a little cringy at times. I agree that the theme is important and should be explored more, but I found they did it in a very surface-level, cliche way.

With almost of the contenders either getting pushed out of this year or not turning out very good, could Best Actor this year be between Brendan Fraser and Colin Ferrell? I don’t know if the movie is good enough to support a campaign for Hugh Jackman, at least for a win, meanwhile Colin Ferrell has gotten so much love for Banshee’s of Isharihm, even winning the top acting prize at Venice. He seems like the only potential challenger to Brendan.

Making a masterpiece one day and a shitty movie the other day doesn't make you Dr Jekyll. Just a director like any other, more or less inspired, depending on the project, depending on the theme. Zeller had something deep and beautiful and overwhelming to say about Alzheimer ; he failed with a depressed teenager ; that's it. It's not badly directed, he didn't became a bad director over night. He'll do a great movie again, without a doubt. I just hope his next movie, The Holy Spirit, will be more like his first feature film.

For me the movie makes much more sense if "the son" is Hugh Jackman’s character … someone who desperately wants to and believes he is a good father out of negative motivation that he will never be like his own shit father … of course that makes him finally do what his own father did but in a different way so that he can’t see it, even deny it with extreme offense!! He then ends up parenting out of guilt and I unacknowledged incompetence … extremely realistic this imho. Though yeah finally the film just doesn’t work unfortunately!

The movie is trying to illustrate the struggle of a family of neuroatypical individuals.
The most important character here is the grandpa who is clearly a sadistic grandiose narcissistic psychopath who, as many of these type of individuals, do not have the emotional struggles normal people have and so they can easily excel in professions that require zero regard the other people emotions(business, politics, legals, surgeon, etc…) so they tend to be pretty powerful or rich when they are in the right environment. That’s why he raised his child, the father(who inevitably inherited the grandpa’s genetic traits), in a pretty hostile environment. This made the father hate the grandpa and made him a bit empathetic(probably thanks to the grandma who was also left to suffer alone with her son) so he decided to be a better human. That’s why he married a super emotive woman because he know she could fill the emotional gaps of his children just like his mother(the grandma) and maybe bring stability to the family.
So the child grew up as a sociopath with strong moral values thanks to the mother’s love. But he inevitably hit the wall of late adolescence/early adulthood crisis and his sense of emptiness started getting worse making him suffer a lot(probably due to conflicting emotions).
The biggest factor of last act of the child is the apathy of the stepmother coupled with the attitudinal incompetence of the medical corp.
Come on, who wants to be healed by apparently fool sociopaths of the turn who are there only to do the only job they don't completely suck at? I mean the medical corp failed to reassure him. That made him perceive them as weird and non sensical making him even more depressed. So he asked to be brought home so he could end his misery by killing himself once and far all.
The Father is the hero trying hard to understand emotions that are completely out of his emotional spectrum so he could help his beloved son.
    At least that's my understanding.

I think we have had enough of the “more interesting” displays of depression or depressive states. I’m sick of being asked to sympathize with those who “have it all” but are “secretly depressed”.
I’m far more interested in the more damaging form of depression where you’re completely non-functional to the point you can’t even take a shower or get out of bed.
Those people get no care or attention. It’s always the “popular but has hidden troubles” sort of character that the audience is asked to empathize with, I’m actually sick and tired of it.
It’s sadly no different in real life.
And the “interesting” cases of depression really aren’t anything more than privileged people having problems like everyone else but being able to cope better because of their privileges, so they have more control over their issues and who gets to see them. Not everyone has that luxury. Not everyone has silver linings to make getting up in the morning more tolerable. This form of “depression” is also prone to being abused and faked, all the more thanks to media depictions romanticizing it.
(It’s tedious to witness if you’re someone who has legitimate life problems and tangible, permanent reasons for suffering and being depressed.
Now all anyone cares about is “chemical imbalance”)
I haven’t seen this movie though so I’m not saying it’s a great portrayal of the sort of depression I’d prefer to see given the light of day..the sort that leaves people completely immobilized, empty and unproductive (which causes much more hell to pay later on if things improve, too many pieces to pick up, too far behind in life to catch up, etc..which then could lead to even more depression).
I am also very critical of the “science” behind psych practices and the fact that theories are taken as facts by the public.
Even the “chemical imbalance theory” is just a theory, not proven, actually closer to having been disproven.
And don’t even get me started on the DSM…pathologizing normal human reactions to terrible and uncomfortable situations/circumstances..while simultaneously & conveniently giving the “well unwell” the excess attention they seek.
Even look up YAVIS and HOUND, acronyms that allude to many of the issues/discrimination in what we know as the “mental health system”.
“Mental illness” in general has become a trend where every Instagram model and tiktok star claims to have a disorder or an illness…which not only gets them more attention and underserved sympathy but excuses for bad behavior as well. And the irony is that those who are struggling genuinely from day to day with no respite are passed over and obfuscated by these pretenders and skin walkers (because that’s essentially what they are, they take the effects of real life problems and suffering from other people and wear it like a temporary skin until it gets too heavy and no longer suits them, at which point they shed it..because they can. Unlike others less fortunate.)

    • @keeferkaneshiro7407
      @keeferkaneshiro7407 Рік тому +2

I think what you are describing is one of those "more interesting" portrayals of depression. The isolation component and a debilitating level of social withdrawal that you are talking about is what makes movies like Her, Cake and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind so memorable in their portrayal of depression. and those movies don't follow people who "have it all" but their depressive episodes are sparked by something traumatic.
The issue with the Son that the brothers were talking about was the depiction of depression as a state of perpetual crying and sadness. People with depression obviously often do cry and feel sad, but that in itself is a symptom, not the illness. Some people don't feel sad at all when they are depressed they just feel lost and numb. There's just a level of superficiality to portray depression as someone who is crying all the time; Especially in a film where taking a nuanced look at depression and a father/a family trying to make sense of it is one of the central points of the film.
Additionally, Psychology is like any other medical science in that it is constantly evolving and updating in practice You're right that theres research that suggests we should be moving away from the "chemical imbalance" model of treating anxiety and depression and I am sure we will see that research translated into mainstream practice in the coming years. much like how the physical medicine field has since moved away from shocktherapy and cupping as more research came out proving that it doesnt come with the therapeutic effects that people tend to think it does.
lastly, the only time I have heard YAVIS and HOUND in my profession is discussions around bias. Like as something that therapists need to be aware of these kinds of transference reactions because this can get in the way of providing meaningful therapy tailored to an individual level.

My issue ia with Hugh Jackman As much as he's a charmingly down to earth person Hugh can't act. It could be too much time spent dancing n singing (at least his version of singing because he's not a great singer at all) on stage. Folks need to tell him the truth. I guess attractive ppl get away with doing anything. He keeps working with 1st/2nd time directors who don't know to properly direct their actors/their movie, or write stronger script that makes sense on camera. His movies are usually unbearable garbage n I freaking adore him. Why won't he see he needs to maybe work on his acting n get him an acting coach, or just stick to doing Broadway 🙄. He wasn't the right actor to play this role.

Keep dreaming. Score of 8.2 with 150K votes on IMDB, the best one one from the entire 2020. Also, you lack culture. The Father and The Son are very well known and celebrated plays, especially, in Europe.

I took a interesting approach to this movie and instead of watching it I just read the screenplay and just from that alone… I wasn’t a fan. Even at the barebones of this story there’s so many problems, mostly on the writing of Nicholas and Peter. I don’t mind movies like this one where not that much happens but wow they could’ve done it so much better. A whole lot of this movie feels like filler that’s just waiting for the big moment where you know what happens.
