And his promise to his father was all that was protecting the other people trying to push him around. It’s like maybe Tommy wasn’t afraid of other people. He was afraid of what he might do them. Maybe Tommy’s father also sensed that (just like his brother, Tommy’s uncle).
I am not a huge country music listener but this is one of my all-time favorites! I have it on my mp3. Kenny Rogers music is some of the best, he sought out songs that told a story.
See I don’t think Tommy did anything for his father to take the fall for. I think his dad went to jail when he was young and those words stuck to him and he lived by them and that’s how he got the Coward of the County tag. Not because he actually was one, but because he was living by the words his dad said.

George Michael's "Praying for Time" and Bruce Hornsby and the Range's "The Way it Is" are all similar, and so appropriate to what's going on this country right now.. You might also look at some of the anti-war music of the late 60s/early 70s. "The Vietnam Song" (Joe and the Fish); "For What It's Worth" (Buffalo Springfield); "Fortunate Son" (Creedence Clearwater Revival, aka CCR); "What's Going On" (Marvin Gaye); "I'd Love to Change the World" (Ten Years After); "Eve of Destruction" (Barry McGuire); or anything by Bob Dylan from that period. Just some thoughts... :)
I like the reference to "A Bronx Tale", now youse can't leave.
The fact he named them like you knew who they were. The Gaitlin boy's make you imagine they were the family not to stand up to by anyone
A Canadian Classic Rock suggestion;
Red Rider - "Lunatic Fringe"??
(As in Tom Cochran & Red Rider)
vision quest
This would be a great one!
"The Greatest" Kenny Rogers AWESOME song
"lady" is another great one. Cowritten by Lionel Richie. It really shows his voice too.
It wasn't co-written, Ritchie is the writer, Roger's a singer who covered the song.
The way I heard it Kenny contacted lionel, asked if he was interested in helping him write a song. At first lionel was hesitant. But, he told him he had an idea for one that the Commodores weren't into. Kenny wrote the first verse, lionel wrote the second -in the bathroom. Then they collaborated on the rest.
An unusual song. From one chorus to the next, it goes from happy, to dark, to finally resolved.
The GOAT Kenny. RIP. my mothers favorite singer all time and this is one of her absolute fave. this song makes me emotional everytime i hear it. Now even more so with Kenny gone. Such a great artist.
Good stuff lads! Great review.... Any Johnny Cash next would be spot on.
And his promise to his father was all that was protecting the other people trying to push him around. It’s like maybe Tommy wasn’t afraid of other people. He was afraid of what he might do them. Maybe Tommy’s father also sensed that (just like his brother, Tommy’s uncle).
I really like this format you've been doing recently with doing the first place song on Patreon and the second place on UA-cam. Love it
I'd like it too, if I had a dollar to spare every month. 😂😂
Loved this song as a kid, always sang this song when played on the radio. Love Kenny
@Carolina to the Caribbean I actually got the impression that Tommy's father did kill someone in a fight even before the movie came out.
I’ve always loved Kenny Rogers’ “Lucille” and “The Greatest.”
And anything Tim McGraw or Brad Paisley! Paisley’s a really good songwriter.
You can find the made for TV movie of the same name on UA-cam and Kenny plays Tommy's Uncle in the Movie
Story-telling seems a theme for the moment.
Have you considered "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" by Meat Loaf?
You guys are great! I love the banter between the two of you. Great stuff
Hank Williams Jr od'd in Denver. You won't regret it.
Hank Williams jr “ I’ve got rights” would give them chills
Overdid it in Denver
Wish I could remember her name. 🤔
I'd like for them to react to Hank Jr's - "All in Alabama", since it's about a major life changing event that he had, and it ends on a positive message.
Great song!
