“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”
So right
Patrick Rothfuss
thats absolutely brilliant. I need to find out who said that
I love how George can't help reading ahead because he wanted to see the end of the story...
@@ClaudiuManea As Will Bearheart mentioned, it's from author Patrick Rothfuss, it's a line from his book The Wise Man's Fear from the Kingkiller Chronicle series.
There's an old saying: "Beware the wrath of a patient man."
I never heard that, but I love it.
@@TheGoauldApophis I put myself in that category. I am very easy-going. I tell people that if they ever see me go off on someone, that person has crossed WAY over the line.
It actually happened once several years ago at work, when I went off on a co-worker. Another co-worker actually asked what the first person had done because my reaction was so uncharacteristic.
David Dove I feel that, a couple years ago during football I got pissed in front of my team and went off on someone and one of the other seniors said he was even scared and it had nothing to do with him
well said
@@TheGoauldApophis Read the Kipling poem The Wrath of the Awakened Saxon to learn the perils of awaking a quiet man. :D
Tommy: "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me!"
I love this take on that line… Awesome
My favorite line in this Kenny Rogers song has always been .... you could have heard a pin drop when he stopped and locked the door.
Jeff Chandler it painted such a vivid picture in my head
@@mackenzie98 CHILLS!
I'm still kinda partial to "I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in."
My friend back in the day use to say: He’s about to kick some ass
My favorite is “he said this ones for Becky as he watched the last one fall”
"You dont have to fight to BE a man" then its "sometimes you gotta fight WHEN you're a man" i love his word play
It is true, though. I avoid fights because they're not worth the trouble afterwards.
Cross that last line with me & nothing's going to stop that fight until its over.
@@doughesson I am the same man I been in 3 real fights in my 56 yr lifespan 1) someone threw a knife at me and came after me I defended myself, 2) 4 guys jumped a friend and were pounding on him I jumped in to help and 3) I heard a woman being assaulted in a bar parking lot and stopped and went after the 2 guys attacking her and literally saved her. Every other opportunity to resort to violence I have walked away from in my life. but those 3 times they all felt my wrath hahaha
@@silversagerae6353 the girl being assaulted was lucky, very lucky you were there!😮😟👍😱🙏👏👏👏
Yeah, I always loved how he turns the third chorus around and it's Tommy asking his dad's forgiveness for having to break his promise and not follow his advice. It was genius.
But remember, he didn't fight for himself or his pride. He fought to protect/avenge his love.
"He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison" should have been a clue that his dad made bad choices and didn't cover for his innocent son. Uncle Kenny knew Tommy was not a coward.
But, great reaction. You guys get it.
"They're leading you to, what I believe, is gonna be scorched earth" LMFAO!
Right!?
He said walk away from trouble “IF” you can.
IF is always the key word...
My stepdad was Kenny's personal pilot back in the day, he spoke highly of him.
"He spoke highly of him." I appreciate your pilot pun!
@@melissaisloud7404 Lol! I just now realized it! Good eye!😆😆
Wow!
That's f'n cool...and thanks for the chuckle 👊🙃👊
🙏💕
Fitting this pops up on recommended today. RIP Kenny Rogers.
Consider this....he was fighting for Becky's honor. He turned the other cheek for 20 years when people walked on him. But when they walked on her, he wasnt having it.
Also...when Dad gave his advice...Tommy was 10 years old. He couldnt have done anything that his pop took the fall for. Just an after thought...
It's the principle of "do what you want to me, I can take it, but if you do anything to those I love, you will pay".
I've pretty much tried to teach my kids and granddaughter this concept; " Walk away if you can, but if you can't; let the other person know you've been there "... A fight for honor is never a waisted fight. VENGEANCE is a tricky road to travel, and no one ever truly makes it to the other side unscathed..... 🤷♀️
Holy shit I never listened to this before. Someone cutting onions in here. That's a rough song.
Wow, it sure is.
They made a movie with the same title starring Kenny Rogers. Its a good movie. Check it out
Yes it is!
I’ve always loved Kenny Rogers’ story telling. Ruby Don’t Take Your Love to Town is another great one by him. It’s very depressing but still beautifully told.
Yeah, that and Lucile. Oof.
Check out Adam Corolla and Norm Macdonald discussing both these songs...it's absolutely hilarious. Also Roger Miller's "King of The Road". Here's the link... ua-cam.com/video/bHNhmwmNsPc/v-deo.html
Definitely its actually my favorite Kenny Rogers song
Amber Swafford Ruby, Don't Take Your Love ToTown is a must for Kenny Rogers
Bruce Smith I love Dang Me a lot myself but King of the Road is a classic.
ive been listining to this song for 45 years, and I STILL tear up every time (6'3", 230 Lbs ex kick-boxer)
Bill Reed 🐻 (a bear hug to you)
Every dang time I cry!
Same bro.
Same here bro I won't tell anyone if you don't.. lol
It isn't 45 years old yet
Man, such an emotional story in this song. The conflict, the humility, the rage, the tragedy, the apology to his dead father ..... and Kenny's delivery as the story-teller .... this is just amazing and makes me come close to tears every time I really focus my attention on it.
Don't forget the Gatlin Boys raping Becky. I guess that is what you meant the conflict.
They made movies out of the Gambler and Coward of the county. That's how good the story's are.
They aren't that good.
@ Todd said the troll living under the bridge of knowing quality music.
@@silversagerae6353 Nobody was talking about music
@@Veggamattic PLEASE! The commentor you trolled was talking about the "Story" anyone with half a brain knows that "lyrics" are a "part" of music. and the stories ARE that good. Nuff said... go on back under your bridge. :)
That's some classic country, they had stories and passed on morals through music. White boy blues man.
"Beware the fury of a patient man." - John Dryden
Kenny was such a story teller. You could imagine the scenes, the emotions, the characters. Well written, beautifully emotive. A classic that gives me chills when I listen to it.
Kenny's song "She Believes In Me" has always been one of my faves.
More of Kenny's beautiful story telling
Lionel Ritchey claims that he owes his entire career to Kenny Rogers. Tremendous songwriter!
Not trying to be a dick here but Kenny Rogers rarely writes the songs he records and people often seem to assume that the singer of a song is the writer too.
@@amazed66 I'm sorry for misleading you. It's the other way around. Lionel Ritchey is the tremendous songwriter, and he wrote the song "Lady" that Kenny Rogers recorded, and helped kickstart Ritchey's solo career.
@@ErikStone1 No problem, I thought at first that you meant things the other way around but can see that it can read both ways.
*Richie*
@Cord Bullard Please point me online to your source. It's not that I don't believe you, it's just that every online source that I've found says that Lionel wrote it. I'd like to know the truth.
How about A boy named Sue by Johnny Cash?
I second this! great song
definately
"If you spit on me, I'm going to jail"....that needs to be on a t-shirt.
Another good one I've never heard. Now, Hank Williams Jr., Country boy can Survive.
Try Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet ‘Islands In The Stream’ written by Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees. Also, please keep the classic Rock coming! You’re right though, there are things worth fighting for, knowing what they are is the trick!
The whole album eyes that see in the dark was written by the beegees it was kennys best selling album
Jimi Lemons dont forget remixed in the 90 in form of ghetto superstar
I have always loved this song. When I was a kid I was always fighting and looking for a fight. Then I gave my life to Christ and people thought that meant I became a punk. I did as Christ (and this song says) and turned the other cheek until one day in my mid 20's when someone hurt someone I cared about. Then they saw what I refer to as "B.C. Bill" I relate to this song SOOOO much.
"Lady" written by Lionel Ritchie, which he composed for Kenny to sing & record. The song was a massive hit for both men & it is still one of the most beautiful love songs ever written & performed in my opinion. A definite "panty dropper" song - LOL!
I thought they wrote it together. Am I wrong? Oh lord now I have to look it up. Lol
Between that song and my drink, the panty dropper, I have gotten laid more times then I can count. Most of those were with my ex-wife. LOL!
Kenny Rogers had a LOT of great songs.
Check out "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" & "Reuben James"
Reuben James has always been a favorite.
OMG, I forgot all about Reuben James!
Reuben James is one of my faves too. It didn't get much love in the poll though. :-(
“If you spit on me, I’m going to jail.” -Ryan
I’m with you there.
It's considered assault in a lot of places, so you'd just be defending yourself.
Id tote a charge in a heartbeat if I got spit on.
Tommy's dad looking down on him when he found Becky "Tommy...you know what needs to be done son".
One of my favorite sayings is “The first person to raise his fists is the one who has run out of ideas.”
Another great story is "You Picked A Fine Time To leave Me Lucille"
Great song, and great reaction as usual. Keep the old country, and the old rap coming. They tell stories that we don't get to hear in today's music.
They come from the same sources within the human heart, IMO. Rap and Country are the same type of music, just for different cultures.
R.I.P Kenny Rogers. You told some damn good stories through the years!🙏🙏
🎶Randy Travis: Three Cross. Y'all got to do this one.
Yes please!!!
Three Wooden Crosses
Also Jeannie C. Riley "Harper Valley PTA" and Bobbie Gentry "Ode to Billie Joe"
Please do Randy Travis Three Crosses. Love you guys!
If ya want more Kenny, do Lady
"Uneasy Rider" by The Charlie Daniels Band is another old school country song with a great story.
Jeremiah Tilley yes! Excellent story line.
Love that one, Legend of the Wooly Swamp is also a good one.
This is why I love country music. So inspirational n shit. But Tommy a real one doe 😂
Kenny Rogers the LEGEND. REST IN PEACE
They made a movie based on this song and Kenny Rogers started in it.
Remember, Tommy was only 10 when his father died in prison. It's highly unlikely that his dad took any kind of rap for hisvery young son.
Best Kenny Rogers song is Reuben James. Makes me sad every time I hear it, but it’s well worth a listen.
Kenny was always one of the best story tellers in country music, he always has a lesson in his songs
Kenny Rogers "Just Dropped In" is an excellent song. It's Jamming!!
Go old school, Kenny Roger's and the First Edition, I just Dropped in to See What Condition My Condition was in!
YES!
YES YES YES!!!!
"Yeah, yeah, oh yeah, what condition my condition was in."
Classic tune!
Yes! Please!
If you've heard other Kenny songs, this one will blow your mind.
No matter what you think of Kenny Rogers's music, the man is a poet. Outstanding lyricism
He didn't write the song. He's a singer, not the writer.
Even though KR is not known as much of a songwriter, his voice is immediately recognizable and his style of singing could transform a song.
@@roberedorleone1502 that's what I get for assuming! Thanks for the education, I should have looked before I posted!
@@teachergirl41 yes indeed.
I remember listening to this with my father when it came out and I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. Hell yeah.
Oh, and the Bronx Tale reference was epic. 😂👊🍻
remember, he was only 10 when his daddy died.
One of the best clips out there, Kenny and Lionel Richie performing Lady!
Kenny Rodgers can kill a love song! (Lady) also sung by Lionel Richie...
I agree! Omg
Lionel Richie wrote Lady. They also did a duet live. It is a great song.
Lionel Richie is an amazing songwriter!
Kenny and Lionel worked together a lot in the past!
Kenny Rogers - Grey Beard
Artists such as Kenny Roger, Gorden Lightfoot, Jim Croche, Niel Diamond, and Marty Robbins, etc, were integral to my childhood. I hold them in the same regard as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Ozzy, The Ramones, Motörhead, etc. I wore out my Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits tape years ago.
If you enjoy the ballads such as Coward of the County, check out Marty Robbins, he is the king of ballads in my opinion. Many younger folks know "Big Iron" from Fallout: New Vegas, but he has loads of amazing songs.
Rest in perfect peace Mr Kenny Rogers. God blessed and will continue to bless you up on high amongst his other angels. Goodnight
Kenny had a psychedelic rock hit in 72 called "Just Dropped In" It'll blow your mind now that you've heard some of his country hits.
Just looked that up and WOW. Doesn't even sound like Kenny.
Also he could turn the other cheek when it was aimed at him but we have an obligation to protect the ones we love and when they hurt Becky that’s a totally new game we’re playin
I love that you were so invested in this song. Kenny told stories with his music. I would listen to this album over and over again with my Dad and discuss the songs just like you are doing. My Dad and Kenny are both gone now. That makes this even sweeter for me. ❤️
So happy y'all did this song. So glad you liked it. My favorite Kenny Rogers song.
Johnny Cash-Ira Hayes
It's a true story about tragedy of Ira Hayes, one of the Marine flag raisers on Iwo Jima.
I was going to suggest this one as well.
Kenny Rodgers is an absolute legend. His music brings you peace
I like the reference to "A Bronx Tale", now youse can't leave.
Brings back so many memories! I used to listen to this on vinyl as a kid. Still gives me goose bumps!
It really does. It's great to see so many people being exposed to this great music.
Toby Kieth has song called "I'll never smoke weed with willie again". And yes, that is the correct title.
"Lucille" by Kenny Rogers is another good one. He also does a duet with Lionel Richie on his classic song "Lady" that is good. Kenny shows the soul in his voice on that one. Check those out, won't be disappointed
George and Ryan;
I'd like to thank you for the service you are doing for so many people.
You guys are getting different people with different backgrounds together in such a humble way; by allowing us to share our passions with each other. And even better, you're teaching these people to open their minds to the stories and lifestyles of those who we'd otherwise never even talk to; maybe even dislike.
This is why this channel is truly beautiful; you're getting people talking TO EACH OTHER; not ABOUT EACH OTHER!
LOVE to you boys!
Please keep up this inspiring channel and long may you both live and succeed in life in good health!
Love this comment. Completely feel the same way.
This is the first time i heard this song. Facts.
@@idatekatemoss Thanks for your reply. Have a wonderful day! 🙂
I just found you guys and I must say that I absolutely LOVE YOU! I have sat here and watched a ton of your videos and I love your unbiased views.
I would love to see you check out the song Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars.
This song is so beautiful lyrically but so underrated. I’d love to see your opinion! ♥️
I found them about a week ago and have been binge watching videos like they were shows lol
Omg,this is so crazy that y'all reacting to Kenny Roger's, I grew up listening to him, my mom used to listen to him all the time and we would sing along,a couple of day's ago I started listening to him again,I was telling my mom that he's such a great story teller....I'm looking forward to y'all reacted to more of his song's...👌🙏❤
Pretty buoy Jones that is not irony AT ALL, coincidental yes, but not irony.
personally i like to think he literally beat those men to death at the end
it is what they deserve after all
yes
I've always assumed he killed them....
The fact he named them like you knew who they were. The Gaitlin boy's make you imagine they were the family not to stand up to by anyone
I love the fact that this song tells the story of a man that comes full-circle. It is a hard lesson to learn, but one every man has to learn eventually, you have to stand up for yourself. Because no one else ever will.
Very nice guys , loved it and I not a big country fan but loved that song and the reaction .
Such a great classic cut! Thanks for reacting to this.
An unusual song. From one chorus to the next, it goes from happy, to dark, to finally resolved.
This song brought me back to my younger years. I just surfed into your channel and I really enjoy your reactions. Fun to watch
Jim croce bad leroy brown I'd love to see a reaction
Hell yes !!
And any number of his for that matter.
Oh hell it doesn't matter if you got a custom made pool cue
And Operator, Time in a Bottle, Don’t Mess Around With Jim, Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Thursday... there are so many amazing Jim Croce songs to choose from.
Leroy Brown yeah, but You Don't Mess Around with Jim really has reaction material written all over it.
Beautifully written song. In the early 80's my mom played the shit out of Kenny Rogers. Loved the reaction guys!
And his promise to his father was all that was protecting the other people trying to push him around. It’s like maybe Tommy wasn’t afraid of other people. He was afraid of what he might do them. Maybe Tommy’s father also sensed that (just like his brother, Tommy’s uncle).
This song always makes me tear up and I've been listening to it for 40+ years. Love the channel guys, keep up the good work.
Great choice. Do Copperhead Road by Steve Earle next.
@foxandnews bad women The DEA couldn't keep up with him, even with a chopper in the air. ;~)
These guys would love the storytelling in these songs.
Absolutely
Great song, great suggestion!
Xavier Vega ; yes yes yes!!!! That one will will be a great show. Love Ol Steve ☠️
Temple of the Dog “Say Hello to Heaven” studio version. Chris Cornell at his best. It’s time for this to happen.
Loved this song as a kid, always sang this song when played on the radio. Love Kenny
Story-telling seems a theme for the moment.
Have you considered "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" by Meat Loaf?
Tears.
Such a great song. Good ol' country artists are the best story tellers. Thumbs up for reacting to this song, guys.
A Canadian Classic Rock suggestion;
Red Rider - "Lunatic Fringe"??
(As in Tom Cochran & Red Rider)
vision quest
This would be a great one!
I am not a huge country music listener but this is one of my all-time favorites! I have it on my mp3. Kenny Rogers music is some of the best, he sought out songs that told a story.
This song means so much if you're a girl, raised in the country, who's needed someone to stand up for them.
If you're a girl in the country, it shouldn't be hard to find a man to stand up for you, unless things have changed over the years, when I was growing up, you didn't even curse around a female, I got my mouth smacked a few times for it, let alone let a man put his hands on a female
"lady" is another great one. Cowritten by Lionel Richie. It really shows his voice too.
It wasn't co-written, Ritchie is the writer, Roger's a singer who covered the song.
The way I heard it Kenny contacted lionel, asked if he was interested in helping him write a song. At first lionel was hesitant. But, he told him he had an idea for one that the Commodores weren't into. Kenny wrote the first verse, lionel wrote the second -in the bathroom. Then they collaborated on the rest.
Throughly enjoy your work, may i suggest the artist Jerry Reed. She got the goldmine and i got the shaft. Or Amos Moses. Thanks gentlemen have a good evening
Clayton Dean when your hot your hot would be awesome
Amos Moses is one of my faves
Definitely Amos Moses!
Definitely Amos Moses!
Amos Moses!
The GOAT Kenny. RIP. my mothers favorite singer all time and this is one of her absolute fave. this song makes me emotional everytime i hear it. Now even more so with Kenny gone. Such a great artist.
I was raised on country music and Kenny has always been my favorite (along with Dolly). I cried when I found out he died. This song has always given me chills in the best way possible, and I always smile when he says Tommy turned and locked the door, because I know the Gatlin boys are about to get what's coming to them. Lol
Hank Williams Jr. - All In Alabama
It's about a life changing event that he had that nearly ended his life, and it ends with a positive message.
"The Greatest" Kenny Rogers AWESOME song
My grandpa listened to country, and since my mom and I lived with my grandparents, I heard a lot of it growing up. I like all kinds of music, and I LOVED this song when I was a kid in the 70s. Hearing it brings back memories of the good times I had with my papa!
I listen to music from every genre, , but nothing tells a story like country.
Kenny Rogers was the best vocal story teller. Over 63 yr career. Watch his amazing biography. He was raised in poverty. Became a huge mega star with The Gambler Album & song. A huge cross over artist Country, Pop, R & B, psychodelic, gospel music. He was loved by everyone Globally. He was a really good man. He helped organize Feed Africa We Are The World song & huge talent session event fundraiser with major talents of the 80's. His songs had weekly TV movies. He was in a variety of bands. He even had his own tv show.
I've discovered Kenny Rogers because of you guys, so thank you!
Kenny and Dolly - Islands in the stream
I LOVE when men get the glint in their eye that says aw now it's going down... When they put their cape on... And they stand tall. ❤️
Wow. I've watched a few youtubers react to this for the shock factor of the twist but you guys really made me think. You're so right - it's actually a privilege to be able to choose peace over violence. I can't imagine growing up in an environment where that wasn't even an option because you'd become a lamb amongst wolves. Fantastic insights - thanks for this.
Hank Williams Jr od'd in Denver. You won't regret it.
Hank Williams jr “ I’ve got rights” would give them chills
Overdid it in Denver
Wish I could remember her name. 🤔
I'd like for them to react to Hank Jr's - "All in Alabama", since it's about a major life changing event that he had, and it ends on a positive message.
Great song!
Kenny Rogers was friends with the members of the Gatlin Brothers. So, the reference to "the Gatlin boys" was a tongue in cheek joke with them.
Yep right down to there were 3 of them..
A nice story if it was true it's just that it isn't though.
Kenny Rogers didn't actually write the song and it wasn't exactly well received as a "joke" either.
ANOTHER GREAT COUNTRY ARTIST!KENNY IS A SUPERIOR LYRICIST!LISTEN TO(LADY),ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!👍❤️🎶
The way I always read the story in this song is Tommy's dad had a lot of strength and anger, and answered the wrongs in the world with his fists. And ended up in prison because of manslaughter or murder. And he knew his son had that in him, so he wanted him to do better and not go to prison.
