You don’t have to fight “to” be a man, but sometimes you have to fight “when” you’re a man. I love the distinction he presents in the song.
I used to love this song... until I was grown and understood it. I'm not at all politically correct, but a song that uses a gang rape merely as a prop for a boy's coming-of-age story is just gross. There's no sympathy for Becky or the pain she was going through. It's all just sunshine and roses at the end because the gang rapists get beaten up and Tommy finds his courage. Becky? Eh, she'll be fine, I guess.
@@btgiv6009 grow up pansy. it's called life. shyt happens. go live in a safe space somewhere.
@@btgiv6009 Well, afterall, women are just possessions to be fought over. Existing only in the scope of their usefulness to males. Supporting characters, at best.😉
@@btgiv6009 - guess what? REAL LIFE be like that sometimes.
Sorry, but we don't live on planet Perfect. Would be nice if we did!
@@btgiv6009 I never considered it "sunshine and roses" at the end. I always felt like he had somehow done the _wrong_ thing by fighting them and letting down his dad. Or at least it never seemed to me that the song was saying "now everything is okay."
There was even a TV movie (starring Kenny) based on this song. Really good.
The gambler as well
The movie was called Coward of the County , way back in the 80s and I think it was on ABC if you’d like to look for it.
The movie is on UA-cam
I concur. I like another little known(?) KR movie Six Pack so funny
@@mikeljenks it's a must-watch!!!!!
One of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs is She Believes In Me. It’s one of the most beautiful love songs you’ll ever hear.
Yeah, i love that one. Also, You Decorated My Life. Such pretty lyrics.
Absolutely agree!
Both are favorites for me too!
I love how he locked the door to make sure none of them got away
"...you coulda heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door."
I still remember cheering the first time I heard that line. Great reaction!
Good Kenny Rogers ballad. He's a great story teller. This was a popular tune back in the day. Thanks for the memories.
Another great story telling song by Kenny Rogers is "I am the greatest"
It sure was. He always told a great story
I think there is a really subtle distinction in the final chorus that rings so true and deep, and it's incredibly thoughtful songwriting. The main chorus goes "You don't have to fight to be a man," and the last chorus goes "Sometimes you gotta fight WHEN you're a man." You absolutely do not have to fight TO BE considered a man. Tommy was more man than any of those Gatlin brothers, even as a pacifist. But ultimately being able to stand up for yourself is expected and right, and there is a line that a man, or basically any human being in this world, won't want to be crossed. And sometimes you just gotta fight back (in whatever way you can).
I also love the double meaning of the word "weak." First it's "it won't mean you're weak, if you turn the other cheek," and then, "please don't think I'm weak, I didn't turn the other cheek." Pretty neat, considering both are considered "weak" for opposite reasons.
Thank you philosopher at large lol
It takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight than to join in one.
I still get chills when Tommy stops and locks the door. 👍
Tommy should have locked the door from outside. Then proceed to burn the place down with the raping brothers inside.
Me to
What I take away from this song is that there is a time for turning the other cheek, and there's a time when you need to stand up for what's right. If someone spread rumors about you, let it roll off your back. If someone is messing with your kids, you do whatever it takes to protect the ones you love. I hope this makes sense to someone else.
A lesson that my Father taught me, and I know this is hardly original, was you don't start the fight,, but if someone does, be sure you finish it. But there was an addendum to that lesson. When it comes to your family, my Mom or my sister, sometimes you don't wait for them to start the fight. If someone is harassing or threatening my family, I will act first. I won't make my sister turn the other cheek
@@samuelvincent557What a wonderful brother and son you are!
When I was growing up, my Dad was adamant that I learn how to avoid fights and be a peacemaker. "Fighting doesn't help anyone" he's say. But he also made sure I knew how to defend myself, because -- in his words, "The best thing is to avoid a fight. The second best thing is to win the fight as quickly and as definitively and as brutally as you can, so that they never want to fight you again."
And that's pretty much how It was for me. I've been in four fights in my life, and in each one, I made the guy fighting me pay for it. Even when I lost, the guy I was fighting paid for his victory.
My Dad had a rule: You don't start a fight but you damn sure finish it.
You would both like “The Greatest”, “ Ruby, don’t take your love to town” and “ Through the years”. One of the greatest singers of all time! ❤️
The Greatest is one of my all time faves. I think Jay, especially, would love that one.
The greatest has been called one of the best sports songs ever written. It was written by the same guy who wrote the Gambler. And you're right, Jay and Amber would LOVE that one.
I love "The Greatest", A perfect way to stay positive no matter the circumstances.
Or try his 1st hot..with the First Edition, (I just dropped in) What Condition my Condition is in.". It ain't country!
@@dianetaylor841 that is one of my all-time faves. People probably know it best from The Big Lebowski, but i used to play it on LP and roller skate around our unfinished basement listening (and singing along) to that album. ❤
Boy oh boy. Kenny sure could tell a great story. Loved this song when I was young but didn't understand what really happened to Becky till years later. Thought it was a song about bullying.
Just a great melody with beautiful instruments and Kenny's raw delivery.
Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
I think that's part of what makes country a great genre. A kid can get the general idea of a song but be able to read between the lines once they get older and know more.
@@SaxyLament That's so true of a good story teller in country music or any genre. You're just mesmerized by their artistry.
Hope you're having a great day. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦😊
Mmmm...Maple syrup..
You two consistently pick the songs that bring people back. Great job!
I love this song. It makes me cry with pride every time. Love it!
May I recommend another country song called Lacey's Song (Help Pour Out The Rain) by Buddy Jewell. As Christian parents of girls you will love it. Guaranteed to make you emotional. Please.
@@greglegakis4177 oh love me some Buddy Jewell...help pour out the rain.....sweet southern comfort...abeliene.......
I cry too….every darn time❤
OMG, I'm laughing so hard right now. Because when Kenny sung the words "and locked the door" Jay perked up faster than I've ever seen him react before. Jay caught that real quick... he knew what's coming. I'll tell you what... Jay is a guy I would want on my team every time. 🤣 I love you both so much, and really appreciate your reactions. You are sharing, and I am receiving. Thank you so much for that. Lotsa love from western Canada. 💗
Greetings, fellow Albertan.
*The other of one of his greatest “story-telling” songs is “Twenty Years Ago”; very touching and moving lyrics. You MUST react to that one. Excellent song!!*
Great song, filmed in my hometown Clarksville, TN
YESSSSS! 20 Years Ago is a must! Amber and J pretty please?!
A great song!
I remember when that song came out. I was 7 years old. It's scary to think that what happened in that song was now more than 50 years ago.
Yes!20 years ago is one of those underappreciated masterpieces
Please consider doing the duet that Kenny did with Sheena Easton, "We've Got Tonight." Awesome song. It's a Bob Seger song, but their version is fantastic as well.
Jay and Amber, you'll love Kenny Rodgers's "Ruby" (don't take your Love to Town) released in 1969, and "Lucille" released in 1977.
Before country, Kenny Rogers was in a rock band, First Edition. To see a young KR, "I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In"
I love this song! Two more of my favorites of Kenny's is She Believes In Me & Buy Me A Rose...so pretty
This song always reminds me this line: "Demons run when a good man goes to war." From a poem written for an episode of Doctor Who of all things. Of course, it also had this line that I thought encompassed the character of The Doctor so well: "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to discover why I have so many."
Great one!!! You should do "Ruby (don't take your love to Town)" when he was singing with his band The First Edition.
I WAS raised by my grandpa , and our way was, IF somebody walks over you, they have to knock you down to do it ,YOU DONT LAY down.
That was a very powerful song which handled some real dark subject matter in a way nobody could be unaffected by. Kenny nailed it
I loved this song when I was a kid. I would sing it all the time and had no idea what he was talking about. I still love it but it feels a little weird when I'm singing along sometimes 🤣❤️
Omg ME TOO i was actually discussing this awhile back. I think i was in my 30s before i really internalized the ACTUAL subject matter.
Another like that for me was Reuben James. That may actually be my favorite of his "storytelling" songs. It's pretty touchy subject matter, but I think he sang it with such grace and respect i really hope my mention here doesn't offend anyone. Pretty antiquated language that might upset some but it really is, at its heart, just a touching tale of two outcasts connecting and becoming their own chosen family. I love it.
@@elizabethmcmurray968 Reuben James was one of my favorites as well. There were a lot of songs that I had no clue what they were talking about until many years later. Usually the true meaning would come to me when I was listening with my kids 😂 awkward
Always get choked up every time I hear this song all the way through -- such timeless storytelling with a great message!
Grew up on Kenny Roger's Greatest Hits in the 8 track player while we all cleaned the house on Saturdays! Great memories, thank you. You MUST do his duet with Kim Carnes, the gravelly voiced female version of Kenny who sang "Bette Davis Eyes". Their duet is called "Dont Fall in Love With a Dreamer", which I BELIEVE she wrote, she wrote alot of songs for others. Also, I think its time to get back to some Mellencamp as I just bought tickets to his tour in 2023, one off the bucket list. You MUST do "Rain on the Scarecrow". A very poignant song from 1985, still poignant today.
I will never get tired of hearing the story he tells in Coward Of The County. ❤
*Y'all still gotta do Kenny's baseball song; "The Greatest." It's a very sweet story song you both will love.*
The sweetest!! The last line gets you! ⚾️
Its called "The Greatest"
I agree! I love this song! It makes me smile every time I watch it!
@@flyntplatz3724 Thank you, edited now.
@@reneestes6254 SHHHHHH
😁
Saw him in Chattanooga!! Awesome! “Ruby” is my favorite!🤘🔥
At The Roundhouse? ;)
@@KozmikZootz Charity function @ Civic Center!
I know you guys love his story telling songs, there is a later hit of his you guys will love also. It’s a story about a little boy playing ball with himself. It is such a positive song and great outlook on life. The song is called “THE GREATEST “
You won’t be disappointed
This was another one of his songs that was made into a movie. Kenny Rogers played Tommy’s uncle in the movie.
I remember this song from when I was a kid. I couldn’t wait for Tommy to start kicking butt! What a great turn son the lyrics of the chorus!
Awesome reaction. I love watching reactions to this song because the beat of the song is somewhat UPbeat and can lull people into a sense of almost warmth and good feelings until they hit the line ..."and there were 3 of them". Most people don't really register what happened to Becky until moments later, but Amber, you definitely caught it instantly. I've never seen someone's face change so fast. Love how intently you listen to the words and pick up these things. I think J caught it, too, but his face isn't always as expressive as yours:) Great reaction. I still get chills every time he says "when Tommy stopped and locked the door".
It's just like Kenny's song "Ruby". That's a fairly upbeat song in musical tone, but seriously dark in subject.
My favorite Kenny Rogers songs are from his band The First Edition: "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and "Reuben James"
I have not heard this song in decades. I loved this song again. I wish this song would be released again. What a great story💙
This song had an impact on everyone I know who heard it at the time. It has such hidden depths. The attack on the woman was not normally discussed openly in that day either. Even if you didn’t listen to country music you listened to Kenny.
Love this reaction. Please do his last duet he did with Dolly Parton. It's called "You Can't Make Old Friends" It's so good and now bittersweet since Kenny is no longer with us. But if you do, make sure it's the official video. :)
Great song!
The album was fun of hit after hit. I could sing every song by heart..still can. Thanks for the memories RIP Keny
If you mess with someone quiet…you’re playing with a cobra.
I don’t WANNA fight, isn’t saying I CANNOT fight.
Great reaction…again!
I don't know why but I cry every time I hear this song. Thank you for digging up great songs ❤️
"Ruby, Don''t take your love to town."
I also like when he says "please don't think I'm weak I didn't turn the other cheek" it's the part that gets me. All these years being seen as a coward he was being strong in a different way.
Love Kenny Rogers, this is one of his best. 🎼❤ I'm sad he's no longer with us. RIP Kenny, you are missed. 🙏❤🎼
Definitely a classic, a great song by an even greater artist
There's been some country songs that have been made into movies. Including Coward Of The County. But Kenny Rogers song The Gambler holds a record for the most movies from a single song. The Gambler had 5 movies, the original song plus 4 sequals.
When Jay paused it the first time & started talking about Kenny's story telling, I was like y'all don't even know yet 😊
Kenny was friends with another super country group… The Gatlin Brothers. Their harmonies are beautiful… the kind that only families have . Check out Houston, All the Gold in California, Broken Lady and SO many others. You won’t be sorry.!!!
Kenny and Conway Twitty can just story tell a song with rich deep voice. Please get back to Conway, "Rainy Night in Georgia" with Sam Moore is one of my favorites
I absolutely love you both! Another amazing country group is Rascal Flatts. I think that you both would really appreciate their song What hurts the most.
They made a movie based off this song called Coward of the County. Kent plays his uncle in the movie
Them Gatlin boys mistook Tommy's kindness for weakness, and they paid the price!
Go back and check out some of the First Edition songs. Also since you enjoy story songs I highly recommend "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Vickie Lawrence. You can sort of think of her as a one hit wonder musically, but her fame comes from a long comedic acting career going all the way back to the Carol Burnett Show. She's probably best known for her Thelma "Mama" Harper character that she did on that show that ended up getting its own sitcom, "Mama's Family".
Reuben James is another great song. I think he was with the 5th Edition when it was released.
First Edition
This is my favourite Kenny Rogers song, great reaction ❤
This one makes me cry.
Such a classic. It kinda defies genres. It’s country. But it crosses all boundaries. Everyone can “get” this song.
Another good storyteller you haven't heard yet is Harry Chapin. Either "Cat's Cradle" or "Taxi" are great songs.
I think this is the truest definition of a man in this song, you don't have to fight but dang it, you don't let anyone mess with your woman (or children) without some retribution. Thanks for reacting to this great song!
Fight or flight!!!! He was MAD!!!!!❤❤ ❤❤❤❤
You guys have to check out some young Kenny Rogers...the live version of "Ruby" back when it was Kenny Rogers and The New Edition (pre gray beard) also the movie "Six Pack" was starring Kenny. It was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid.
Six Pack. I remember that one well. Diane started in that.
Not a country fan at all but Kenny’s Baseball song The Greatest is by far one of my favorite county songs
Your reaction to the realisation of what was happening to poor Becky - how quiet, sad and angry you both went - was very touching and compassionate. Excellent reaction. Thank you.
From the late 60s through the 90s, very few could spin a ballad like Kenny Rogers. He was a storyteller, a balladeer, and an artist. He payed tribute to the human condition as well as anyone.
You should try "Ruben James" next... one of his absolute best early ballads. Cheers!
Please do “wait in truck” by Hardy and Laney Wilson!!!! It’s the best story written in 10 years in country music
In my preteens, our neighbour Daniel who was a DJ, would play Kenny Rogers and Jim Reeves records every Sunday morning. We'd return from Mass and these songs would play for most of the day. Hearing this now brings back a lot of memories.
Love this song- and his songs “She believes in me” and “Through the years” are also fantastic hits of his- 🙂✨✨
This has always been one of my favorites. I also love the Gambler and The Greatest. There are so many amazing works of art he has created it is hard to choose favorites.
I literally just finished watching this classic movie when I turned on here and you guys was reacting to the song, great reaction
YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE MOVIE! KENNY IS IN IT!!!
My favorite line... The Pin drop when he locked the door... That scene was IN my head
Kenny was indeed a great story teller. He has a LOT of beautiful stories.
I was lucky enough to meet Kenny Rogers. It was at this time of year. He happen to be a friend of my sisters friend. He was super nice. I can't remember the year, but he used to be Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. Would love to hear more Melloncamp. Thanks again for this smile.
😢 song every time I hear this song it makes me cry 😭 love Kenny Rogers ❤️ and thank you Jay and amber for sharing this
Big hit back in the day, Kenny was the man back then.
This song still gives me goosebumps.
I remember listening to this song as a kid on the radio after my father died.
"you dont have to fight" = "pick your fights wisely", "You could have heard a pin drop" = "ITS ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!" ;)
This song was made into a Made for TV movie; Staring, of course, Kenny Rogers. You can find the fight scene on UA-cam. I've watched it a few times myself. Thanks for the smiles
This is my favorite Kenny Rogers song. Thanks!
I’m glad I was able to see one Kenny Rogers concert before he passed.
This song was Kenny Rogers' first Top 40 country crossover hit of the 1980s. On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song peaked at the #3 spot and it went all the way to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Country chart during the early winter of 1980. This is a awesome storytelling song indeed!!!
Kenny had many hits in the late 1960's, into the 1970's and through the mid-1980's, and you've played several of them. However, the hits well ran dry for a long time. Finally, in 1999 he had one final hit. It's a cute story called "The Greatest." Since you love story songs, you coach, and you have young children, I think you will enjoy it immensely.
Kenny Rogers The Greatest. Please do this one next. One of his most underrated songs.
So glad you picked this song! This might be a new favorite of his for you.
This is my favorite song to watch people react to....for ALL the reasons:)))
As parents yourself, I'm sure you will love Kenny Rogers' song, THE GREATEST. Trust me, you will have the biggest smile on your faces at the end.
She Believes in Me, Buy Me a Rose and Through the Years are three beautiful love songs. 😊
For all you young'uns , check out Kenney Rogers in his younger days when he was " Kenney Rogers and The First Edition". A very different style, especially "Something's Burning ".
My All Time favorite Country music song. Thank you.
Kenny Rogers --- Reuben James is a great story song.
Kenny Rogers is more than a singer, he was a balladeer, a storyteller
I don't know why this one makes me well up every time I hear it. Love it! Also, how good was his voice y'all...#chefskiss
I LOVE YOU TWO SUCH A BEAUTIFUL COUPLE ❤❤❤
Omg! Can't believe I missed this one! I thought for sure y'all had did this one by now. Love Kenny Rogers ✌❤🎶
Kenny’s song Sweet Music Man is also beautiful!
My absolute favorite Kenny Rogers song, though I love them all.
So many memories listening to this. Thanks guys. Stay blessed
Lucille is one of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs.
Makes me cry... EVERY TIME.
