Thank for being it up and there's scene in FX show, Shōgun (2024) has the same executed with one of Blackthorn's peoples in the first episode. Jesus, it's looking pain and agory on the person (whether genders) when it comes to real-life history executed methods. 😞
I'd like to see the stats marketers used in the 90s to convince so many companies that gross-out ads worked. That gameboy pocket ad, they could have just enlarged that picture of all the different colored devices. Being in a magazine they could also promote its more portable nature by having the image showcase the actual size of the device.
BloodRayne ads were always honest, as i recall. Sexy vampire doing sexy things. Also, guns, knives and blood. They knew what they were selling and I respect that.
There was often an impression back in the day that the people making the ads had only learn about the existence of videogames when they got the job and had absolutely no idea what it was they were trying to sell and only the smallest inkling who they might be selling it to. And also sometimes just a picture of a butt or whatever.
It DOES explain the Turbo Touch 360 TV ad for the genesis, at least. Where...the 'first party Genesis controller' was depicted with a + style D-pad instead of the 'dish style! I hated that ad as a kid
This new series needs to have as many episodes as Kombat Time, it's that good! Matt's natural comedy really comes out when he's able to commentate over goofy stuff like this. And it's very interesting to see some of these ads, as I grew up about 10 years later than Matt, so I don't know most of these. Would love to see 80s ads, foreign ads (with translations), tv commercials, and more, as I think there's a ton of content available for this series.
I've played Panic! and I'm guessing the ad at 9:20 is trying to say you'll burst out laughing at the game's surreal gags. I kinda feel bad for the person who had to find a way to market a game that is almost all gags and nothing else.
Goemon went out like a legend! As a kid, I had no idea the Klonoa ad was referencing a STD 😂 I appreciate Giant in that ad using the right N64 grip on the World Tour ad since you used the D-pad on the AKI games
Re: Youngblood game: IIRC a short demo disk was released, I remember Spoony and Linkara reviewing it in a crossover long ago alongside a few other comic book games. As for who "this guy" is, it's Troll, the diminutive "comic relief" guy with gray Wolverine hair. He sometimes wore that silly helmet.
Anyone ever see an ad, and think "Well, this ad sucks. No way I'm buying that game!" Or perhaps you did want the game, but when your parents saw, say, the Klanoa = VD ad, they said, "No. you're not getting a game that's _clearly_ for adults."
The only time that I've seen Panic! was from a few episodes of Game Grumps. It was a pretty basic "press buttons and random things happen" sort of game. Also, rated Teen apparently, so I don't know what that ad was on about. Maybe it was for all the games on the system?
Panic!'s original ads did preview the game with its original 'M' rating, but the US version got censored from that one to a 'T' cut before release. The European and Asian versions have a few Hitler/Pearl Harbor jokes removed, respectively.
If I remember correctly, "hotdog" in the context of the Cruis'N ad carries a similar meaning to "daredevil" (as in, "you're someone who deliberately seeks out danger for attention/thrills).
9:02 Chances are, this ad for Panic was before the ESRB was established, while it does mention it being MA-17 on the ad itself by the V.R.C (Videogame Rating Council), the game itself on the box/case actually has an ESRB rating of T/Teen, so yes, it did actually came out stateside. Also, the game's JP name is "Switch", and it also got a PS2 port in JP too, lol. 13:09 Speaking of the Hot Dog ad for Crusin World, and 45:10 with that Neo-Geo AES ad, SNK also themselves did an ad for the AES with hot dogs as well, but they did it a bit better, at least. Other than that, yes, do more insane ad reads.
The blatant sexism in these game ads nearly rank up there with ads during the 1950s and as a female game player, it used to drive me crazy. Klonoa is one of the most beautiful and heart-tugging games I've played, but of course, the typical American adolescent 90's male would never admit to liking a game like that.
That "Panic" ad is a curious one. Based on all the images of the US released game I see, the rating ended up being the ESRB's "T" for teen. The MA-17 rating was one of Sega's proprietary ratings they used before the advent of the universal ESRB ratings system. I can't find anything about the content that would elicit a "mature" rating. A cigarette machine was featured in the original Japanese version but it was removed for the American release. (And I'm not sure that this would have elicited a "mature" rating back in 1994.) This ad was likely made before the game was rated by the ESRB. Why did Sega elect to place their MA-17 rating on it? Perhaps due to its kiddy-looking nature, they wanted to make gamers think it was an adult game.
Oh this was a fun watch! And yeah, I'm definitely down for you to continue this Matt, cause I know there are so much more video game ads to check out; In fact, this should be a thing with your channel now =)
Believe it’s a call to be a “wiener”-as in “winner”. Kinda like South of the Border signs. “You’re always a wiener at Pedros. You never sausage a place!”
The most confusing thing about the WCW vs nWo World Tour ad, for me, is that they had four wrestlers for this photo shoot, for an N64 game with four-player action, and they only have a single controller in the picture? You'd think they would advertise that feature as much as possible!
I had Panic! for Sega CD. It was a really cool game. You go around to scenes with various remote control buttons, trying to pick which one moves you forward. Some move you back some screens, but others manipulate the background to interact with you.
07:49 I remember that ad for very obvious reasons. Even as a 11 year old I wondered how they got away with that. I really miss the "Throw everything and see what sticks for ads" type of marketing back in the 90's and 2000's. Bring the sexy back!
Yeah I kind of miss it when ads would do that quit a bit! I even brought up the target ads and commercials (for their game section!) I think target was trying to be toys R us R ZONE? But I could be wrong?
All you have to say is, “It was the ‘90s,” and you can explain most of these- but I’m sure glad you say more than that, because this video was hilarious. Magazine ads from back then were… a choice, to be sure. It’s funny to look (back?) at them with a more modern lens or after many years since seeing them initially.
I loved Spiderman on Atari 2600 as a kid. It was not great, but swinging and climbing was so much fun. Ghostbusters was the only game i played all the time. I would put it on just to hear the theme song.
When did Matt have time to put this together, between being underwhelmed by summer crap fest , and the Microsoft showcase, plus hanging with Justin Wong at different parties in Los Angeles.i can’t imagine him having a lot of time to throw this video together.
8:45 there are comic book covers like that too lol. Check out the covers to Marvel Comics "Marville," especially issue number 2. You should do a video on comic book covers too lol
I remember seeing a few gaming ads for a store called “target” One of them is about one of the doctor playing TEKKEN tag tournament while the patient is dying! Another one is about the Shepard playing game boy advance while a wolf steals one of the sheep! (Based on the parable and the sheep from the Bible) Also that one came out around the same time as the game boy advance! Another one is about a zookeeper playing games with a gorilla while another knocks out the zookeeper! And lastly there’s one where two teenagers are playing video games and a radio brings up that there’s a “Ticklebear” on the loose and the bear turns off the radio to tickle one of the teenagers while the other is “getting into the game” (Also “Get Into the game” was target’s slogan from the early 2000s!) So edit time! The SHEPARD is playing the game boy advance the character is not named parable! The parable is basically a story in the Bible giving you lessons (just wanna clear things up!)
Whats even more messed up about the Goemon ad is that the real life Ishikawa Goemon was executed by being boiled alive in scalding hot water.
Oden wouldn't be Oden if it wasnt boiled
So in a way, they made an advertisement based on historical accuracy.
Thank for being it up and there's scene in FX show, Shōgun (2024) has the same executed with one of Blackthorn's peoples in the first episode. Jesus, it's looking pain and agory on the person (whether genders) when it comes to real-life history executed methods. 😞

Love the new presentation you done by making like flick-pages and such, that looks really nice!
You know these ads are fucked up when the BloodRayne one is the most honest and one of the least horny.
BloodRayne ads were always honest, as i recall. Sexy vampire doing sexy things. Also, guns, knives and blood. They knew what they were selling and I respect that.
I was an upper middle-class kid and the Neo Geo was still unreasonably priced.
$600 for the console was bad enough, but $150-200 for each game was an absolute dealbreaker.
There was often an impression back in the day that the people making the ads had only learn about the existence of videogames when they got the job and had absolutely no idea what it was they were trying to sell and only the smallest inkling who they might be selling it to. 42:20 Spawn the Eternal has one redeeming quality, I think it gets you a special monster in Monster Rancher.
The Sega Hard ad with the nuclear explosion was insane
World Trade Center was bombed like 4 years before that
@cubefreak123That was before 911 -~-

I still think the most insane was the ad that suggested a PS1 shooter was so fast paced that you'd CUT YOUR EYELIDS OFF to play it.
