I tried finger rolling 2 days ago and I am LOVING the results! Usually i have to fight with certain hairs to make them curly at all (i have 2c) and this really helped!
I have almost given up on my half wavy half curly hair until I tried your finger rolling method. It worked soo soooo much better than the traditional finger twirling method. For the first time in a long time my second day hair turned out amazing and even better than the first day hair. Thanks so much for this great additional tip. @@nufailanoon there are damaged hair 2a/2b curls and it becomes too frizzy when dried. So, it really needs to be styled properly to clump together or to at least look "silky" and avoid that annoying frizziness. It was wash day when I watched this. My bangs have never responded to finger coiling and now I know why. I finger rolled them and I LOVE them. I’ll be doing it again. Thank you.
I found this channel during quarantine and had never been so excited to style my hair. I saw one of the videos styling Amanda’s hair and was so excited to see someone with a curl type like mine!! You are both awesome!!
I had to watch Mell's original finger coiling video 40 times on half speed to figure out the precise finger movements. I always ended up with all the hair ON my finger... frizz city! The trick is to slide the coil off your fingertip after the first wrap, then wrap the coil around the *hair itself* I haven't tried the finger rolling yet... next washday I definitely will.
Omg I love it when my hair is fully separated correctly, the only thing is my hair will clump back together in huge chunks sooooo quickly, I end up separating clumps all day throughout the day. It’s honestly pretty annoying lol😂😂
I use finger rolling on my sister's hair. Her curls look perfect. She loves her hair now I know how to style her hair. She goes so happy to school bouncing those curls as she runs to class.
I'm so happy I found you. I straightened my hair my whole life cuz I never knew what do with my curls, then in college I learned how to do braid outs and have been doing that for seven years . I'm so glad to see you and Amanda share your stories. I'm waiting on products and hoping to learn how to go full natural with what I think is 3a hair. Thank you
I am a 15 year old, my whole life my family were the ones who used to take care of my hair. The past two years, I was the one who ‘took care of them’ (the only thing I knew was straighting it. I ended up damaging my hair. For like 5 months, I didn’t straighten my hair cuz we had no events or guests and I was too lazy to do anything. I have seen a huge difference between the roots and the ends. After I have seen my favorite actors with perfect hair, I never said I wished I had straight hair, I said I wished I had perfect curls. Now I am taking care of my hair and didn’t use iron and heat in months. My hair is becoming better and better and it is even growing very long! Now, the only thing I am thinking about is if I should cut my damaged ends (which will make my hair when it’s curly very short) or just repair them.
I’m 24 years old, and only these past four months i’ve been able to confidently love my hair and wear it just as natural as it is. Ever since i was 10+ years old, i would always have blow-outs done, and usually straighten my hair. The past few years i wanted to try and go natural but my hair decided not to. I didn’t know how to deal with it so i thought that the damage was just its nature, which i hated and went back to the blow-outs. The moment i passed by this video, my hair was saved. It was like magic how the curl would form, like every strand would turn back to life. Doing so for four+ months, i’ve got it to hold the curls and i would just brush it and it would end up just as fine. So, from the bottom of my heart thank you!
Oh my gosh, that explains so much. My curl patterns are 2B to 3C. I have an insane amount of diversity on my head. 😂 this might just do the trick for me! Thank you for explaining it like that and showing us. Any tips for someone like me with so many curl patterns? I would love to see a video where you work with someone like that to show your best tips, if you haven’t already.
You're like the big sis who knows the best advices so you don't have to struggle on your own. I love you so much, girl, you changed my life. Thank you!
I love your videos!! After 12 years of using Brazilian blowout I decided to go for my natural curls, of course that was a lot of work (lots of heat damage and weird curl patterns) and if it wasn't for you and your "seester" my hair would be an insane mess. ♥️ Thank you!
I have used the Finger Coiling technique for about a year and it has made my curls so much more defined and they are clumping better. I have a curl pattern between your hair and Amanda's and the length goes to just past my mid back, so it's long. it does take A LONG TIME lol to do this, but the results are so worth it!!
I had tried the finger coiling early on when I was figuring out my curl pattern and it just straightened out my fragile curls. Makes sense now. I'll have to try the other technique. My curls/waves are still pretty loose so we shall see. They used to just fall flat and frizz until I finally got the right products, application and diffusing method down.
Finger rolling works amazing for my hair, I have a mixture of 2b-3a hair. Its exactly how you mentioned in this video. I feel like finger coiling works better for 3bc & 4s hairs and finger rolling works better on waves 😍
You saved me girl, I was about to shave my head. I have a 2c wavy hair and after 3 months doing fingers coils I was close to straight it . I don’t like the elongated result of finger coils in my hair. Thanks again
I have the 2c too. And cried everytime i tried to finger coil. Till i learned finger rolling and it works amazing. I cant go more than 4 days without washing my hair. But when i do finger rolling i can make it to day 6.

Mel? I honestly love you and your content. Changed my hair-life-balance so much. You were the first hair stylist and curly girl who didn't judges blowing out from time to time. Your videos helped me so much, love my hair now. Thank you. ♥
I have wavy long hair so I’m definitely going to have to finger roll my wonky waves! Can you do a video on shampoo and conditioner bars because I’m trying to be more conscious of the environment
Mine is quite long too, and my curl clumps are quite thin , so it often looks stringy and weird...... As I'm late seeing this video, you've probably tried it by now. How did you go? And did you air dry or diffuse?
OMG! I have wavy hair and just recently found out that I have curls if I use the right products (I'm 37 🙈). The hair in the front on my right side however is always straight no matter what I do. After watching this I immediately ran to the bathroom and tried on that hair. It didnt work, even though I wet it first and used my curl products. I was so disappointed. Then I tried on my other side, right above my ear and OMFG, it gave me the prettiest curl!! 😮😍 Can't wait to wash my hair tomorrow and do the whole head 🎉
Tried finger rolls today in my flat spots. Wow volume! Will be working on perfecting this technique to combat the thinning and dreaded lack of volume. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Love you! My hair never looked better, since I discovered you and that I've got 2c, 3a hair. Always treated it wrong, because it's straight when wet and awkward when not tended to.
I was really disappointed when trying finger coiling technique on my waivy hair, which was recommended by each and every curly blogger. Finger coiling made even worse on my hair. And now, after your video, I am REALY thankful to you for the finger rolling technique, which added way more volume and definition on my waives. Thank you so much for this video, for new useful information and your charisma 💜
Perfect timing! My hair has been changing since I hit my 30s and for the first time I have wave. I struggle with getting volume and curl at the roots. Can’t wait to try the finger rolling on my wash day!
I love that you did this! Finger cooking doesn’t work for my curl type (2c to 3a) they naturally look like curling wand curls but I have a few pieces that act up because I’m color processed. I’m very excited to try this technique!
Because I damaged my hair the top layer is 2C and the rest is 3A. Watched your video yesteday and tried finger rolling only the top section, 2C. The results were amazing. It is a delight watching you!
I am so excited. I tried this on my wavy hair around the crown this morning. I am not coordinated enough for finger rolling but I coiled it around a tapered mascara tube just as if it was my finger and I pinned it up and have beautiful curls I'm so excited! Thanks Mell!
Thanks so much for posting this!! I was trying to work out how to do the finger rolling with my uncooperative fingers (I have MS) and that is just the solution that I need!! Did you air dry it?
@@cathismith2624 A little of both air dry and diffuse. After I posted this I found a small hairbrush with a tapered handle that worked well as well. I pinned the top like Mell showed but also left some errant ones loose. I got them going in the direction I wanted them vs. the direction they like to go! 😊❤️
@@maureenlevy207 How did you diffuse, and until how dry? I seem to end up straightening my hair when I diffuse it 🤣. I've watched heaps of videos etc, but everyone has their own little tricks that work, it seems!! Did you leave it pinned until 100% dry?
I think the day I did it was not a work day so I let it air dry for about 30 minutes. My hair is only chin length tho. Kept clips in and diffused into all they way dry. Good luck. Interesting. I mentioned a diffuser I like and where you could get it (A) and it wouldn't let me post. I deleted that part of my response and it let me post my reply.

Both came out so pretty! I always prefer definition over volume on myself but even more so I’ll stretch my curls without heat for illusion of length. Once my hair grows longer I will try these. The shrinkage that comes with the super defined curls on me makes me sad lol

Same I have 2c-3b depending on wash day or not and when I used to coil it they would always come out wavy like my hair has better definition then that without any products or anything but as soon as I saw this I tried finger rolling and now my hair is 3b on wash days and 3a the days after that but it’s never been wavy since I started rolling
Guys remember!! For each side she does, when she times remember that she’s only doing one side, so! Ex finger coiling took 15 minutes on one side! If she were to do her whole head that would be 15x2 so in reality it would take 30mins. Just a reminder. And it also depends on how fast or slow u are.

ah, my hair is thoroughly prepped with a leave-in detangling conditioner that helps with the slip, then i use my nails to help create clean parts when sectioning. Note that i have fine hair so it's easier than thicker, coarser curls !
@@ManesByMell Thank you! It's just that I always have at least one curl that's in the middle of the part and I hate to break them up. My hair is thin too though
I've learned that I've had to finger coil taught from the root but midway down the hair I have to hold the hair clump up and then continue the finger coiling on the rest of the length to achieve a curl that won't fall like a stretched out noodle. Now that you've shown this finger rolling technique I shall try it! Also, I love that ur video has time stamps. I'll watch the video through, more times than not for entertainment/listening learning at work, but I like to go back to the exact step I need when I am actually going to practice it. Luv yous.

It would be nice to see some tips for short curly hair. Not everyone has long hair and the majority of the curly hair videos the women have long hair. I am in the process of transitioning my hair from straightening it to allowing my naturally curly hair to do its thing AND I have decided to stop dying it as well and embrace my grays. My plan is to allow it to grow out to shoulder length but in the meantime I need HELP (or tips) with styling techniques. Sometimes my head looks like a big ball because of the length of my hair.
Honestly, I shake my hair dry after I get out the shower. And then scrunch when it's almost dry. That's it, that's how I style my hair. If you would even call it that.
This is the first time I am hearing about the finger rolling techniq and I am sooo going to try it!! It gave you such amazing results😍

One of the things I usually struggle with when finger coiling, using the denman brush or any other method where I style each curl separately is that my curls go into different direction (counter-clockwise, clockwise) seemingly at random. So when wet, I tend to scrunch them first to see which way they rotate and then style them accordingly. Just looking at Mel's video and the direction the curls turned afterwards, I think doing the finger rolling *under* the hair clump (‾‾o) makes the curl go clockwise, so rolling them *above* the hair clump (__o) should make them go counter-clockwise. I think. As I don't see what else would affect the direction. I need to try it :D

@@riley2235 you're so lucky!! I've been doing the cgm for about 12 months, but my hair has no shine to it at all 😔.
I’m so ready for this video because I swear I never finger coil right🤦🏻♀️😂
I had to watch Mell's original finger coiling video 40 times on half speed to figure out the precise finger movements. I always ended up with all the hair ON my finger... frizz city! The trick is to slide the coil off your fingertip after the first wrap, then wrap the coil around the *hair itself*
I haven't tried the finger rolling yet... next washday I definitely will.
@@zanyzanne omw thank you!!!
Me tooooo. It just never seems to come out right. But I'll try finger rolling and see how that goes.
Same here!! I find it straightens my curl and takes all the shape out, it never looks right
If I want straight hair, I finger coil! 🤣 It's always 'opposite day' with my hair
Omg I love it when my hair is fully separated correctly, the only thing is my hair will clump back together in huge chunks sooooo quickly, I end up separating clumps all day throughout the day. It’s honestly pretty annoying lol😂😂
same 🤣
....I relate...so much
your hair is probably too wet when u r styling it...
YES! I tried to look up what to do about this, and no one seems to have an answer
@@blueredyns7392 it’s weird bc I will pay attention to separating it into small chunks when wet, but they still link up together while dry 🤷🏼♀️
I have the same issue and don’t have patience lol 😂
Thanks again
omg lol I'm glad this came just in time! Hope it works out for you
I have the 2c too. And cried everytime i tried to finger coil. Till i learned finger rolling and it works amazing. I cant go more than 4 days without washing my hair. But when i do finger rolling i can make it to day 6.
@@nathalymolina4141 how long is your hair? Mine is below the top of my shoulder blades on my back..... so I'm wondering how finger rolling will go with that length??
@@cathismith2624 i got it around my bra line. And i really dont get that much shrinkage. My top layers are close to my shoulders and it barely goes to half of my neck. After finger rolling i even have to scrunch a little bit to get more shrinkage. But one think is for sure, the 'ribbon' type curls look amazing
@@nathalymolina4141 Do you diffuse it or air dry? Mine is about the same length and it's fine but I've got so much of it that it takes about 7 hours to dry!! I seem to make it straightener, not curlier, if I diffuse 🙄
Omg the arm strength and patience!! I'm so impressed!!!
Hey Mell!
I just want to say u’re the reason Im transitioning to my natural curly hair.
After this phase I would like to change my hair color, can you do a video on how u paint your hair, pleasee ❤️
I seem to remember she talked a bit about solid shampoos/conditioners on her Instagram
Thank you so much Mell, for always keeping us wavies in mind! We love you despite your gorgeous, glamourous uniform curls!!!
I try my best, especially while in quarantine it's been hard but I'm lucky to have Pat to demonstrate on!
I have 3B/3C hair. The twirling gave me nicely defined curls. The rolling worked best on my bangs. Very happy with the results. Thank you!
I love that you did this! Finger cooking doesn’t work for my curl type (2c to 3a) they naturally look like curling wand curls but I have a few pieces that act up because I’m color processed. I’m very excited to try this technique!
Finger cooking didn't work for me either, but toe cooking worked!
@@cathismith2624 Hi Cathi. I tried to reply but got an error and don't want to have to re type it all. This is a test to see if I can reply.
Thank you for breaking these techniques down. I have watched other videos, but you just speak my language!!!!! Can't wait to try both techniques!!!!!
I really liked the finger coiling side. I do shingling on my type 4 hair which is basically finger coiling. I think the finger rolling side after several days started to look a little frizzy and losing it’s curl. That’s just me 🤷🏾♀️ Thanks for this video. 👍🏾
I just started a journey in accepting my curly hair and trying to style it. After years of perm treatments, right now, I only have a curly pattern in my roots. But this video was so good. I now understand different methods. You are an angel for making these videos!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video, I love learning ways to style my hair without applying heat!

I'm so excited, I can never figure out how to do this
I hope you found this helpful!!
THANK YOU for introducing me to finger rolling! You have saved my hair! I got a not-so-great short hair cut, but this is really helping to get my curls and waves back in order after being cut down too much.
Both came out so pretty! I always prefer definition over volume on myself but even more so I’ll stretch my curls without heat for illusion of length. Once my hair grows longer I will try these. The shrinkage that comes with the super defined curls on me makes me sad lol
Why are you so perfect Mell ? You litterally saved my hair two years ago ive been following and learning step by step all the curly girl method from you and now you're my favorite UA-camur . Ty for including wavy hair. I always see what to do with curly hair but I never see good videos for wavy hair. More please!
Damn you're absolutely right lol. I almost forgot she was timing for each side not the whole thing
I've always hated my hair because it's so thin and limp and I stopped using heat on it years ago and stopped coloring it thinking my curls would come back. After watching this, I think my curls are just damaged and I'd like to try the finger rolling technique, but I don't think my arms will handle the stress lol. But this video gave me hope for my hair. THIS! Finger rolling! I've been struggling to get definition at all because I have very long fine hair and even finger coiling "worked" in some places but seemed to stretch my hair out. Thank you!!! The finger rolling actually works for my hair type!
I am still tryna figure out if my hair is wavy or straight. Sometimes the bottoms turn out to be curly :P Have a nice premiere everyone...
If any part of your hair is wavy, you have wavy hair. Straight hair will never just "turn out" curly sometimes.
Maybe you could use weightless products and do some finger rolling so your waves can show up
Straight hair won’t be able to curl at all I’m sure
I helped my sister discover that she indeed has wavy hair. Now she is rocking those waves with the steps and styling products I gave her. No more frizz for brushing wavy hair lol
Use more proteine

My finger coiling is all thumbs. Better luck with the brush. 62 and I finally realised I am NEVER going to have straight hair and STOP obsessing over getting straight hair hair cuts. Which turn into frizzy puff balls. Watching these videos have helped me to stop fighting it and look into caring for my curls and my hair is looking better already even without the haircut. Thank you these are great videos. Can’t get the products in the uk which is a real pain.
How do you section your hair so easily- mine never sections properly. lol
I get so jealous when I see people section their hair at ease. It’s so hard for me to section my hair and keep it detangled because I have so much hair.
ah, my hair is thoroughly prepped with a leave-in detangling conditioner that helps with the slip, then i use my nails to help create clean parts when sectioning. Note that i have fine hair so it's easier than thicker, coarser curls !
@@ManesByMell Thank you! It's just that I always have at least one curl that's in the middle of the part and I hate to break them up. My hair is thin too though
@@janamahlich6406 I have the same thing with my hair - very fine and low density hair. If I do clean parts my curl groups get broken up in weird ways!
@@petrinagiese4635 you seeee!
Luv yous.
Hi I have a mixture of 3B and 3A. I was wondering how I could get a longer lasting style? Thank you
I think it’s the hair type Bc same girl it looks good day 1 maybe even 2 if I’m lucky
invest in a satin/silk bonnet and a satin/silk pillowcase. when you sleep the curls last and all you have to do is refresh some frizzy pieces.
yes to what Mya said, also make sure youre using products with hold, like a mousse&/gel. even if it makes your hair feel crunchy at first, it's worth it for longer lasting results!
Ok Thank you so Much that really helped:)
@@ManesByMell Love your channel! I'm learning a lot. Unfortunately I just can't imagine wearing a bonnet to bed - I don't think I'd be able to sleep as I'm a light sleeper as it is.

Woohoo! Love your content! It’s super informative and helpful!
Hey Mell, could you do a video about the pros and cons of big chops?
love the idea! Will keep it in mind for future videos, thank you for the suggestion!
Well that explains why the few times I've tried fingercoiling a few straighter spots didn't work so well on my mostly wavy hair. Once I'm more healed from my neck surgery, will be trying out the finger rolling.

I really appreciate the comparison with wavy hair. More please!
Honestly, I shake my hair dry after I get out the shower. And then scrunch when it's almost dry. That's it, that's how I style my hair. If you would even call it that.
I love this comment
So does my youngest son, his curls turn out better than mine.
Sometimes, less is more
This is the first time I am hearing about the finger rolling techniq and I am sooo going to try it!!
The mini mic is back!!
I didn't even know finger rolling was a thing🤭
The definition both techniques gave 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I’ve tried so many different ways of styling my curly hair but no matter what I do my roots are always frizzy even while wet. I’m not sure what else to try or do 😢
Same here! I don’t know what to do at this point either. I watched so many videos and I still can’t figure out how to make my roots look like the ends (my curls look so good at the ends).
