    Excellent! Measuring velocity with a chronograph usually BR or match primers yield lower variation in muzzle velocity compared to standard primers.

    Hmmm... Choosing? Not a problem.
    Finding... That's a problem.
    Thanks for this video. Very informative.

      It was too difficult to try to listen to this video. I gave up. I'm sure I missed some good advice, but after having my ear drums blasted with the opening noise I went deaf.

    Thanks for the detailed video. I’m also loading.243 and all I have is mag primers so you confirmed what I keep hearing of starting low and working up.

    Hey West Desert Shooter, These are some great pointers for those who are confused on primers. The precautions of using mag primers near max is crucial info as you mentioned and a good point you showed on what was used in reloading manuals. Like you said different manufactures use different formulas so there primer burn rates may be similar to one another and its good to expirement (safely). I was told that magnums not only burn hotter but also longer. The longer burn rate may help get lower SD numbers on slower burning powders and also spherical powders like H335 may benefit to this also. My friends in North Dakota switch to magnum primers in there hunting season / winter season.. They say it helps also when temp is near or below freezing to tighten up there groups. Great video brother!

      Hey dude thanks for the kind words! i was not aware the magnums may burn longer, a great point and it makes sense, I really need to do some more serious testing with primers speeds and SDs and see for myself whats really going on with them, and test both in winter and summer. It would be great information to have

    should different primers be used when using a bolt action or a semi auto?

    WSD another bang up job, you covered everything correctly. Another point about Magnum Primers they should also be used when burning large amounts of slow burning powder, when shooting in very cold conditions. During my 243 Winchester load development I haven’t need a Large Rifle Magnum as of yet. Winchester and CCI are my normal primers, but I was able to picke up about 500 Federal Large Rifle, so I am using them with the Federal 243 Brass trying to duplicate the Federal 70, 80, and 100 Gr loads using the Federal load using the Nosler 70 Gr BT, and Sierra 80 & 100 Gr bullets.

      Many thanks man! something you might want to know is that Federal is now selling their own line of bullets. Something you might want to check out.

      WDS thank you for that information about Federal bullets. Keeping my eyes peeled, haven’t seen anything in print about that yet.

    I’ve actually decided to test 2 more kinds of primers to compare to CCI BR2= CCI 250 and FED GM215M. I Will use a 460SW revolver with a chronograph. Doesn’t need to be an accuracy test, measuring spread and SD on speeds will tell how much consistent the ignition is.

    I have seen 2 different people make videos of testing pressures of loads where they use magnum and standard primers and found that there's not much at all pressure differences between the two and in some cases the standard primers had higher pressures

    Thank you!!! I have loaded a TON of stuff this year, but I have run out of large rifle magnum primers and I thought I would not be about to load for my 300 Win Mag, but I do have 4k of the Federal Large Rifle Match primers. I didn't know I could use these in 300 WM...guess I got caught up with the word "Magnum"

    Would this be a good coyote round or should I go with the .556/223?

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 років тому +2

      are you asking if 243 is a good coyote round? if so absolutely! I can shoot a 70 Gr bullet at 3800+ feet per second for comparison the 223 shoots a 75 Gr around 2850. You can even get 243 with a 55 gr bullet that would be up around 4000+ FPS but with an AR follow up shots are much easier, both would be excellent for the task. a 243 also makes a great deer gun so it can even take on that role if you hunt deer

    Hey buddy as u know shortages of ammo and reloading stuff....i want to reload my .300acc with 150gr hornady sst well I can't find no small rifle primer ...do u know if I can use regular large rifle primer instead...let me know thank u buddy

    • @CJ-ty8sv
      @CJ-ty8sv 4 роки тому

      No you cant because there is a physical size difference between small and large rifle primers. Small rifle primers are .175" diameter where as large rifle primers are .210" diameter... So large rifle primers will not physically fit in a small rifle sized brass.

    • @CJ-ty8sv
      @CJ-ty8sv 4 роки тому +1

      @@Djpika1000 Unfortunately, it has to be small rifle primers.
      And if someone tells you or you read somewhere about using small pistol primers, *DON'T* as this can lead to very dangerous situations, especially in Semi-auto / AR platform rifles because of the much higher risk of out-of-battery discharges and squib rounds.
      Pistol primers are purposely made with thinner cups because of the lighter firing pin strike associated with pistols. Because of the floating pin design in the AR platform, a pistol primer can easily be set up by the pin before the bolt is locked up in the lugs. Think of it as the opposite from the talk about specialty primers mentioned in this video starting at the 3:10 point. This is not a good situation to have obviously as it can damage the weapon for one and worse, cause injury (and technically even death) to yourself and/or others.
      Also, just like how magnum primers are formulated for slower burning harder to ignite powders used in magnum cartridges, pistol primers are formulated much weaker because pistol powders are much faster burning and easier to ignite so depending on the powder, they might not properly ignite the powder and could cause squib rounds.
      Lastly, going back to the thinner cup associated with pistol primers, they are also designed for much lower pressures (typically 35k psi or less. Unless you are loading 300aac (Blackout) to subsonic levels, you will likely be running at least 10k psi more pressure (more like 15 to 20k psi more pressure) and this will likely result in many pierced primers.

    Difference between smal pistol and smal rifle etc? Could you use small pistol in smal rifle ex?

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  5 років тому

      I haven’t done it. In the end of the world you probably could. I would assume they produce bigger spark with rifle as well as harder primer cups. You could detonate a round with the wrong primer in a pistol. Be careful

    there are three types on primers for each of the srp & lrp regardless of brand correct.
    you should have has all three types of each size and each brand to use in this video then people would know what the F you're talking about.
    I don't understand why people make videos with only half the product for videos.
    Buy some more product !
