I have swiped pistol and rifle primers for 40 years mag or not. I have never had an issue as long as I don't load to max! The hand books they have out today are all lawyered up. my old books are dead on for max performance! The only primers I have ever blown out was 357 mag and 22-250 Rem. That was only because I was loading at max. Max load is not your most accurate anyway. Start a couple grains below and work up or down until you find what your gun likes! 2-3 hundred fps is not going to make much difference in shocking power! Accuracy and shot placement are what it is all about! There have probably been more game animals harvested with a 22 long rifle or a 30-30 than any other rifles! They will all do the job if you hit your target! One shot one kill!
I have thousands of large pistol primers and don't use them as I only load 9mm and 38 super in pistol, so I was wondering about using them for rifle. Most of the guys on the forums say not to do it though.
@@torreyintahoe I highly recommend that you NOT do that. I inadvertently mixed large pistol primers into my 7x57 reloads, which were thankfully rather mild. I loaded up 20 or 30 before discovering my mistake. I chose to take them to the range anyway. I had a couple where the primer was punctured. Thank goodness I didn't get any blowback into my face. The primer cups are nearly always thin on pistol primers, a bit thicker on magnum pistol primers, and thicker yet for rifle primers. So long as your pistol has a strong enough firing pin spring to shoot your rifle primers, the gun will go BANG, but I think it's really risky using any pistol primer in a rifle cartridge. I use .50 bmg primers on everything. I also like to top off the case with black powder before crushing a round into the case. Maybe I should share those with people who ask me for ammo because I "reload" and it's "really cheap".

For the first time in years I'm seriously looking into getting back into reloading once I get my .50 Beowulf and .458 Socom uppers. Channels like this are a utter godsend even if you aren't covering the calibers I expect to be reloading for.
I load for 450bushmaster 458 socom and 50 beowulf using cast and jacketed bullets if you have any questions once you get going. Once I got into big bore ar’s I have never looked back
Good video- vital information that people need to understand. That 9 1/2 and new powder lot load was hauling ass! Too, some people try to max out velocity over book big time and something like this could ruin their day.
Really enjoyed the video. Very interesting. You hear so many stories about which primers are the best and worst along with the affects. Also, which brass is the best and most consistent. I hope not, but you’re probably right. Won’t be me, I haven’t been shooting much because I have less than 3,000 primers total. Trying to find at least a couple of bricks somewhere.

Quite a bit of research has been done lately on the effect of humidity with regard to powder burn rates. Possibly the new lot of RL26 had less H2O content and therefore more volume per 49 grains with a faster burn. Double whammy, especially when nearing max case capacity. Thanks for the great content!
Very good advice here. I've come to accept, that for me, 'good enough is going to have to do'. With limited availability of components I can load up to 'good enough' rather than fine tuning to someting better. I have a good supply of components on hand and I'm not going to use them up chasing a super sweet spot. Sometimes, 1/2 MOA or 3/4 MOA or even MOA is going to have to do.
To keep shooting at some good volume, I just a bought a Christensen Arms .22LR and I have a good supply of ammo for it. It's just going to have to do.

Actually looking forward to more LR primer vids as I trial some ADG brass against Lapua and expand my RL-26 loads.
For those of us that have made re loading mistakes - hats off to still having all your fingers and no real damage. I always use 3 sources for loads and just tore down 400 ( 1st mistake ) rounds of 10mm due to over pressure. Worked up to this load, but new can of powder was all it took. Lesson learned and no body and no firearm, hurt in the process. Still learning and guess that's what makes it interesting. Be safe out there.
It's amazing how much case capacity and bullet selection can matter along with powder lots. I hit pressure with RL26 and SRP Peterson brass rather easily around 46gr with 140ELDs. Nearly 2900fps with a 140 is itself a pressure sign in 6.5. Pretty sure all three kegs I have are same lot (*flex*), but I haven't confirmed. Peterson seems to be pretty heavy brass (more like Lapua) and a bit less case capacity as a result. Not sure if their LRP brass is the same. I use 450s with SRP brass.
Randy Shelby, The Real Gunsmith said some LRPs can be used with some magnums because they were used together before MRPs were created. I’m going to test Rem. LRPs with my 7mm SAUM.

@@BoltActionReloadingIt was stuff I'm personally aware of.. but I was browsing accurateshooter this morning for the first time in a while, and it is quite obvious that there are folks new to reloading who started AFTER the ammo crunch. Starting this hobby in the middle of a vast shortage is quite scary, to say the least. Somewhere out there is someone subbing a powder that is "real close to the same number" with a pistol primer in a rifle load. Just this morning a fresh post from someone shooting 6.5cm and flowed a case WAAY into the extractor groove and no real idea what happened and a basket full of potential causes.

Rifle primers tend to be made out of thicker material because rifles tend to fire at higher pressures.
I actually have a brick of Sellier and Bellot small universal primers where it's printed on the box that they can be used for pistol or rifle.
You are all wonderful in your story and I agree with you. BUT! now I have to use whatever primers I can get. There are simply no primers for sale.
And I use pistol magnum primers for regular rounds. I use rifle primers for pistol cartridges. I was forced to do it.

I have been experimenting with the Gordons reloading tool. The best way to explain it is to call it a modern open source alternative to quickload. There are a lot of missing powders but its a work in progress and free.
I know of it, I just need to do some work with it. I am excited to see what it can become.

I loaded the same load in LC brass and WCC and all the LC brass had black rings around the primer and the WCC all looked good.
i just load what the Nosler book from Bass Pro says, But i also just about never have shots beyond 100yds. In fact my 3 deer his past season were floating around 60 yds. So i just reload for fun and to make sure i got a few extra rounds laying about.
Always wondered how you ran so much more RL-26 without pressure than I could. I guess it was the lot to lot difference. I hope those Remington 9 1/2M work out better for you than they have for myself. The accuracy is there but I have had lousy SD's with them and notice an immediate improvement with other primers over them which sucks cause they were half price and I bought 2000 of them. To the brush guns they go!
Hey BA, Have you found a primer that worked well with RL-26? (low SD) I have been planning on a test, but would love to know what worked best for you so I make sure to include it.
@@BoltActionReloading unfortunately I do not. Wish I could help but I have somewhat limited experience in LR primed cases in 6.5 CM. The Fed 215M gave me some decent consistency but the 210M was noticeably more consistent for me in my limited testing.
Those kind of speeds seem quite excessive to begin with so I would imagine they were on the edge to begin with. I predict that RL 26 data is going to be reduced over time because of this very issue you ran into. I don't use many Alliant powders these days because they are very inconsistent from lot to lot and I got tired of dealing with it. Yes I ran into the same issue you did in the past and learned the hard way lol. Good advice on primers too since there can be big differences between them.
I couldn't imagine not having a chronograph and trying to figure things out. Some reloaders don't understand the lot to lot variations and without a chronograph or long distance ranges to confirm the issue.

THE RELOADER series of powder have shown me large variation in pressure and accuracy. Primerss in my testing have very little changes in accuracy and velocity. . Powders mostly ball powdersand some stick powders. IMR ⁵and Hodgen powders have been very complaint in pressures. You go on to say you changed barrels have you compared throats and chambers I don't expect to work up one load in one chamber and expect it to be ok in another.i don't trust computer programs to tell me about pressure, my blade micrometer and new brass tell me how its building pressure.

Can you do a video on normalized powder lots? There is quite a bit of chatter on "moisture content" but it seems like it comes from containers that have been open for a while and those that have not. Maybe take your new lot and leave it open on your bench for a week and see what velocity is like after.

There is so much less hassle when you work with loads that have a substantial margin below maximum. I have come to prefer reliability and versatility across a wide range of variable conditions over an extra 50-100fps of velocity. For hunting application.

@@BoltActionReloading I haven't had any luck yet. Even though it will require a lot less marksmanship practice, I think have enough components to ride this out. Since my 155 grain 308 load and my 75 grain 223 load use the same powder, I'll be doing a lot more practice with my 223(chuckle) It might even get rebarreled first.
yep, had to remind Elvis ammo to be careful of the info he put out, because some rifle firing pins will pierce a pistol primer and not be hot enough for powder being used, causing problems in the worst way. then there is the other end of the spectrum that you just went over. really glad that you covered this, people are trying to reuse spent primers in ways that can not reproduce the ignition the same every time, so for that i thank you.

I also have just completed some additional testing in 223 with 9 different primers with AR comp. My best guess at this point is that video coming out sometime in February if you want to look out for it. The other examples are going to be with 308 or 6.5CM I believe. I hope this helps.

I’m new so forgive me, are you saying that all primers are the same diameter but have different charges for different applications. As in a primer that fits my SW-40cal will fit in a 5.56 cartridge? Thanks Dave
Hi Dave, No apologies for being new. There are differences in thickness and tolerance between types, but external dimensions of small pistol / rifle are the same. As someone else mentioned I too have been loading for over 40 years.
In the old days all small primers were the same and the boxes were labeled " small pistol/rifle" primers.
Large primers are a bit different as large rifle primers are a bit harder and ever so slightly taller
However I've used em in for example. 45 ACP so long as it's a strong hammer spring weapon.
Now onto magnums
The magnum primers I've used burn hotter but DO NOT create more pressure

I've swapped primers back n forth for almost 50 years now I even reload primers!!!
The only issue I ever had was using large rifle primers with striker fired weapons. They didnt have the strength to crush occasionally so I'd get an occasional misfire.
Like you I run the blue press as well as other progressives an single stage.

This is very interesting. I still have several thousand large pistol primers but I don't use them cuz I only load 38 super and 9mm in pistol. I was considering using them for rifle cartridges but most guys advise against it.

I work with a guy that has a personal bar at his house. He told me that he doesn't break the seal on a new bottle until he has it's replacement. After primers come back in stock I might have to adapt that practice for reloading.
You may never shoot then in these crazy times. I was lucky enough to unintentionally stock up... damn sales
@@savagereloader6699 that's why I stated after this situation. As long as no insane laws are actually passed, the market will stabilize and we'll see components again. Last year and into now has just been a perfect storm to make it difficult for the shooting community.

@@BoltActionReloading I think there is enough reloading supplies , but people are buying them and trying to make money on gunbroker. I started noticing that people would be selling half a brick but they would have quantities of thirty or forty and there where several different sellers that were doing this with new stock. I hate that they are doing this, but don't want bigbrother to step in.

I’m new 100% rookie, I didn’t use a magnum primer on my 6.5 creedmoor, I used larger primers. Should I have used larger magnum primers for it?
Hi Tim, Welcome to the channel! Its not a requirement at all. If what you have is giving you the results you want don't change. I just tested lots of options and the hotter primers tended to give me lower SD. If you do decide to try them drop your charge weight some and work back up so you aren't getting into pressure issues like I did in this video.

When I heard you say 2900 fps and then mentioned over 3k fps my jaw hit the floor. I had no idea people were running 6.5 Creedmoor that hot. I know the reloading manuals of today are lawyered up so I don't expect true max values but the fact that it is stating H4350 is running around 60k psi at 2700 fps I can only imagine how close to the edge you guys are. It's a bug I get it but damn that seems like you're playing with fire at those speeds and pressures. Be safe.

The info i found online during the crap was sm rifle to sm pistol is OK but work your loads up. Not sm pistol to sm rifle. Some say sm pistol cups are thinner than sm rifle cups

After a lifetime of reloading for everything I shoot , probably in the millions of rounds, one day purely by accident I grabbed a box of CCI Small pistol primers and loaded them into some .223 full power loads before finally noticing what I'd done. I just don't make mistakes like this and was pretty embarrassed to put it mildly. Now what do I do? Well, maybe not the smartest thing I'd ever done but I decided to fire a few and see what happened. To make a long story short. Nothing. I couldn't see any difference at all in the primers or pressure signs so I didn't pull them. Not that I'd ever do that intentionally again and I sure don't advise doing it.
That's more powder than I've seen in stores around here in months. This completely sucks.
Yeah man this has gotten ridiculous and even though I only reload 2 cartridges .223rem and 6.5cm I'm running low on components and I just can't bring myself to pay those high prices on Gunbroker so I went out and bought a Tikka t1x 22lr and set her up for precision shooting and came across a little pawn shop that had 3 case's of RWS 40gr professional line rifle match that shoots amazing for 22lr ammo and thank God because I bought all 3 case's an each case has 2,000rds in it. Sorry for the rant and that sucks you didn't keep track on your primers

Don't use damaged or worn out cartridges, reload cartridges 10 times maximum, small rifle primers can be substitute for small pistols
Just rdmember to check cartridges well.
While rifle primers may be able to withstand pistol case pressures, pistol primers may not be able to withstand rifle case pressures. Primers are made for certain case pressures. Some have used pistol primers in rifle cases without failures but they did so with low charges and therefore lower pressures. Bottom line is just follow manufacture load data to stay safe. If you use other primers in other cases then know the risks and dangers of increased case pressures.

Small rifle primers are the same as small pistol primers
A couple of things to keep in mind about QuickLOAD. One is, as the instructions say, it assumes the mildest primer you can get is used. Also, its powder characteristics are based on closed bomb testing of a sample that is purchased off the shelf like any other and it can be different from your lot. Some updates to the database have resulted from testing additional samples, but you can spot this in some instances when you look at two powders that you know are the same except for the branding, like 296 and H110, and the powder data differs a bit. You will have to play with burn rate and starting pressure and maybe even energy content of the powder or the weighting factor a bit before you get a good match to what you actually are using.
I always try to keep in mind Homer Powley's statement: "First contemplation of the problems of Interior Ballistics gives the impression that they should yield rather easily to relatively simple methods of analysis. Further study shows the subject to be of almost unbelievable complexity." The bottom line, as you concluded, is testing is essential.
Testing is always needed and just as soon as you think something it will find the exception for you. Thanks for the comment.

I know a guy that did a test with 10 different small primers rifle & pistol and he had a ES of 21 and SD of 8.
Hi Derrick, While I appreciate your comment, everyone's applications and ideas of what components can be swapped is not the same, especially for new guys that are just getting started. I mean no offence, but the worst advice I get usually starts with "I know a guy." Making sure the components you have work together safely is paramount. In my testing here ua-cam.com/video/i0NMeauegf4/v-deo.html I found similar results but this is very much the exception and not the rule.

Supervel pressure tested small pistol, small pistol magnum and small rifle. All the above works in a rifle, using a small rifle or small pistol magnum in a glock or any striker fire gun will work with a stronger spring. Nothing is not safe!!
This is exactly why the comments section is the wrong place to get advice. Was safe in 9mm, he does no testing in a rifle cartridge. That doesn't mean to start igniting 223 with pistol primers (or cartridges with higher pressures). You miss the context of my video vs his. He is talking specifically about loading 9mm. There are several other cartridges that are not 9mm. You watched a video about 9mm and have the statement everything is safe. Did you even watch my video? I specifically show where making some of these changes affect your load. You have to know your load and how it is affected.
@@BoltActionReloading pistol primers are safe in rifle, the only difference is the cup thickness. Rifle's can handle more pressure than pistol so if a pistol can use rifle primers common since tells you riffles are safe with pistol primers.

WOAH Woah Woah! Since when did powder change in lot require load development again? No one ever told me that. Once I go through the time to find a load I want to just crank it out. And when I run out just make more even if it's 10 years later with all the same components but new stock. I don't have a range of my backyard to go load develop every time I change a lot to one of my components. That pretty much makes reloading pointless for me.

Hi BT, Depending on how consistent things are lot to lot , yes small changes may be needed. There are many factors that make reloaders lives more interesting. I think the majority of us are tinkerers and enjoy the challenge. It does sound like a interesting video topic. I will have to look and see what I have in stock to work with.
BT, canister powders for off the shelf retail sale are usually +/-8% of nominal burn rate. If you do you development with a slow lot, then run out and your new can is from the fastest lot, you could have a 16% increase in burn speed, and with that, an increase in pressures. If your load was near max to begin with, that extra pressures could put you way into over max territory........
Most if not all reloading manuals explain that ANY change in components for a load require a safe work up again......
If you have to go to a new lot of powder, simply reduce your starting load a couple of grains and work the load up to the previous velocity area a few tenths at a time using common safety practices and a chronograph if you have one. There may be a small change in the required powder charge but it’s usually nothing dramatic. I personally have seen more pressure changes and spikes with primer changes than anything else.

Pushing a 135grn bullet at 3000fps in a 6.5CM is asking for trouble, if you want that bullet at that speed you use 6.5-284 or a magum caliber.
I am not sure when loading to published data started being "asking for trouble". Clearly this combo is over pressure but have shot it previously (different primer and lot of powder) with no real indication of an issue still with velocities above 3000fps. Keep in mind that this barrel is 26" not 24" which the load data is based on.
@@BoltActionReloading to hot if you ask me, but hey its a free world. Putting magnum powder in a standard case, on the alaint website i only see large capacity or magnum calibers on the reloader 26 list, additional your barrel probably have to be replaced after 1500 rounds true it.

I really dont consider a cup and draw bullets great for hunting deer and elk. Nosler partition bullets perform much better. The real gunsmith has a great vdo on bullet construction
What I don't understand: how can you go to the shooting range without having checked every single cartridge beforehand? No primer? That would never happen to me! But I'm just a picky German...
It had a primer when it went into the chamber. It came out when it was ejected. (over pressure)

RL26 is not optimized powder for CM. I enjoy that powder and like it’s performance, but I keep it for almost mags and magnums. I would bet H4350 would give you closer to optimum.
Optimal for SD/ES no, but if your trying to keep a hunting load at a velocity to keep good expansion for the longest time possible yes. Application is important. 200+ more fps = longer effective range.

I am with you 98% of the time. In most cases I want both but in this case I know when I drop to 1800 fps I am not going to get the results I want on target. Velocity isn't everything, except when it is. Before I had both, this load isn't done, but it may not ever be a single digit SD and still be ok. I think it's important that we all realize we aren't all after the same goal, but that is fine.
@@BoltActionReloading If you are not getting the velocity that you think you need, why not go to a cartridge that will do that for you safely and not by over pressuring a 6.5 Needmore? I have a Creedmoor and really like it for the accuracy and small powder charge requirement, but I don’t think trying to load it to 6.5x284 velocities is the answer, JMO. I really like your channel and mean no disrespect to you at all.
I like the bigger calibers, that way I can get the speed I think I need. 300WM, 300WSM, 7MM REM, and my speed queen 👸 is a 6.5x300 Weatherby. Only downside is that they burn a lot of powder. I can stay away from max load and still get the accuracy and speed I am looking for. These rifles are mostly used for hunting, although I take the 300WM out to a thousand at the local range.

Hi Gary this load is based on data from Berger. 49.8 gr of RL-26 with the 135 CH. Berger does not specify a primer so not sure how to help you here. The problem is with changing lots of powder and swapping primers (cause I was out of the lot I had been using) and not backing down a little.
