The JMSDF is level capped by the US. It is allowed to have enough ships to run errand for the US and be the meat shield for the 7th fleet in a conflict. However, it can never have capability that can threaten US naval dominance.
Hence the JMSDF is devoid of strike and logistics capabilities, despite having the technology and ship building capacity to massively expand in both areas.
This is like the feudal era, where the King have the strongest army in the kingdom but would call upon his vassal's forces in wars. However, a competent king would never allow any of his aristocrats to have armies that can threaten his own, regardless of the enemy's strength. Britain and France are allies, Japan and Korea are vassal's, hence their very different structures and capabilities.

The lack of Blue Water capability is deliberate according to the USN Strategic objectives with the USN maintaining a Blue Water Carrier Strike Force whereas Japan and South Korea are regionally situated to contain the Chinese Navy within the three Island Chains. especially the 1st and second Island Chains of containment. America will naturally assume global hegemony of Blue Water Dominance with 11 Carrier Strike Groups. The Only challenge to the Blue Water dominance has allways been the Russian Navy, especially the SSBN Borei and the SSN Yasen Submarines. However, the Chinese future Blue Water Fleet will once and for all challenge the American Blue Water dominance within the next half century. I am certain that China will overtake America within the next century.

I recently completed China and its smaller craft down to DD level and I can see why the US is pissing itself - the PLAN has been growing by around 100,000 tons every year for the past 5-6 years and it is only accelerating.

Hyspersonics and naval drones are there, only requires a few well designed small stealth hull filled with fap 500 loads whether are small sub drones or boats, those are a nightmare during day imagine at night. Carriers were important as battleships used to be prior but things change constantly nonstop. Let’s put a practical example russia just like china applies collapsing tactics. In resume counter measure are only possible if one produces cheap ships on large amounts filled with cheap yet good and fast enough defenses. And not a single NATO member neither japan produces good enough defenses at low prices. Starting with labor work that usually costs 14 times more per hour against russian and chinese labor workforce.

Japan's navy after WW2 was never designed to be a blue water navy, it's more or less a defensive force. If a war does break out in the Pacific, the Japanese economy would grind to a halt, because most if not all of their ships would be blockaded. Without oil, and other natural resources, the Japanese economy would collapse.

Especially with its naval strength but centered around only a handful of advanced aegis destroyers, a couple mogamis and their helicopter carriers unlike the us navy, a serious hit would effectively neutralize their capability as a fighting force on the high seas.

I don't think it is weakness meant to be fixed or rated to be good or bad. if you define good for "Blue Water Navy", JMSDF would be bad. but Military is just the tool of politics, and performing power projection which only just for defending sea lane is huge cost. It would be cost ineffective bad tool. But since you consider Japan wage war on China (15:35) which never be goal of politics, in that case JMSDF is bad.

The sea area on the Chinese side of Japan is extremely shallow, making it difficult for nuclear submarines to make full use of it. Also, if you apply the cost of over 20 diesel submarines to nuclear submarines, you would only be able to buy about 2 or 3 submarines, which would not be good in terms of cost performance.
With the addition of lithium-ion batteries to the power sources of Japanese submarines, we believe that they will be able to conduct sufficient operations within the range that allows sailors to maintain their composure.

Japan Navy is far more modern than Russia and well mantained with more large fighting ships, Russia is also at the limit of its budget where Japan has room to double or triple its Navy if it wanted to its only 1.2 percent defence spendingn now

Interestingly, your description of the Japanese navy is very similar to that of China and South Korea. All three are extremely dependent on import and export, ergo sea lanes. All three have extremely long sea lanes. All three can not adequately defend the sea lanes should a war break out
Unlike Chona or South Korea, Japan is restricted by its Constitution and they are barred from unilateral changes. But, unlike China, the United States is treaty obligated to defend Japan to include defending its overseas supply line. The US purposely limited Japan's expeditionary capabilities to the relief of Japan's neighbors. It also made Japan dependent the US as intended.

There is a nuance to this.
China & many other Asia Pacific countries, actually until recent decades appreciated US presence (and control of Japan)
US basically prevents Japan from offensive re-armament, hence no real carriers or nuclear capability
This is the reason for the Japanese Naval set up.
Therefore China & US whilstbin conpetition are also aligned in this respect.
US is guarantor of Japan's trade routes, which is why Japan (in words at least) generallyvtoes a US line.
If Japan became more independent of the US shadow, there are benefits but also pitfalls.
A more nationalistic Japan without its master/shogun (the US) may re-arm but/or it may also conduct more independent foreign policy.
The lack of a US nuclear umbrella however may also mean a Japanese nuclear pursuit. In that Uncle Sam will like China prob not prefer.

Then partners like USA with enormous resources will come into play and Japan navy shall have secondary roles, that it is fit for purpose. On defensive role, land assets like Air power F15 fleet Helicopters and long range Missile (acquiring 100 s of American) forces, F35 planes in many squadron strength will be able to give a bloody nose to China and North Korea. It is likely that QUAD will turn into a defense partnership in next decade adding Massive Indian forces to the mix. So the future is not very risky! Japan is restricted by two major factors: the budget and the constitutional article 9 that limits its military capabilities. The Japanese understand that they are woefully under equipped to stop China. Thus they increased the budget, however the JSDF are still limited by their political pacificism. For how limited the JSDF has been, it's actually quite impressive how effective their acquisition programs have been. The Japanese have never overspent on a warship and nearly all their programs are delivered timely and with all their capabilities when launched. That in itself is a massive advantage when Japan needs to ramp up military production during wartime. They have an extremely reliable economy to produce high quality defense procurements within a reasonable budget.

This video is so "ignorant" of obvious factors that it's not even funny.
    1) Japan lacks "blue water" capabilities because that's NOT Japan's goal;j they WILL HAVE ONE, the minute they decide to have one. They had one when China was still manning "junk" boats!
    2) Strategically, it's FAR EASIER to enforce a naval blockade on China than on Japan. Easy to see that both the author and many commentators don't know/overlook China's location on the map, totally barred access to the sea by potential enemies, entirely surrounded by unfriendly Nations, and totally blocked access to the wider Pacific by the same Japan some here believe are simply too stupid and too weak to do anything if push comes to shove!
A few thousand sea mines dropped along the Miyako straights, plus Japan parking its not totally incapable submarine assets in the Southern choke points and China's navy is going nowhere. They will have to use Afghanistan roads to buy any oil they need. Add the US Navy to the blockade, sit down, and see what happens.
    3) China relies on oil, and many other minerals imports also. That can be cut too!

There is one factor that need to be kept in mind that is distance between japan and it's enemies (china and north Korea)that is about 500km on average that is well under the range of land based radar and missile system this mean japan can deal with air and surface naval threat with land based missile systems alone, this is the reason why jmsdf is so focused on ASW. A war between China and japan will mostly be electronic warfare and slug fist of missile. If japan deploy long range missile on the Kyushu island chain that will itself be enough to deal with china. But I agree japan needs power progressive capabilities, they need destroyers with heavy anti ship and anti air capabilities and support vessels. But japan's biggest weakness is it's self imposed restriction unless japan can remove Article 9 of its constitution which forbids having a military japan can never became a true superpower.

The title of this video is inherently misleading.
Japan's navy is only "worse than you think" if viewed from the limited lens of blue-water capabilities--a mission that the JMSDF has never made their primary focus anyway because of constitutional limitations against power projection and using war as a tool of foreign policy. Hence, if accurately assessed against their primary mission of self-defense, Japan's navy is actually quite capable for defending its home islands.
And let's not forget: whatever inherent "weakness" Japan has for blue-water operations is--by design--complemented by the US 7th Fleet. The JMSDF's ongoing warming of relations and military interoperability efforts with South Korea and the Philippines only further strengthens cooperation and improves the alliance's military potency.
This is what China-friendly commentators fail to always acknowledge, it seems: military alliances are always better than going it alone. China may have the biggest navy right now, but against the full might of the US Navy-led alliance in the region, it simply is no match. After all, China only has North Korea and Russia as its allies in the region--and we all know how reliable and capable that "alliance" is. :)

Military alliances might be an effective deterrent against starting a war against any of their members, but not necessarily an effective countermeasure once one starts.
Also, one has to ask whether US military alliances are actually a deterrent at all, since the United States has many other options in its strategic toolbox to secure its interests, such as economic sanctions, proxy wars, supporting local grassroots movements, etc. etc. that don't directly involve its military forces in costly and potentially risky demonstrations of force. Every time we've seen US military alliances demonstrate their potential in recent decades, it has involved illegal invasions and attacks on isolated and smaller nations combined with or after the above described tools. However we see traces of these tools being used by the US and its military allies outside of direct military conflicts anyway, and since there's no formal declaration of war against another nation even while clearly acting to influence decisions within its borders, there is strong sign of intent to coerce and subvert local governments. That goes beyond deterring other nations from military attacks against US military alliances, and crosses into establishing new vassal regimes and destabilizing regions.
And it's not like the US flavour of military alliance can't be countered by larger, better integrated nations. All the other options it uses are to weaken and isolate other nations, but if they don't work then military containment and direct attacks become far more risky and carry less potential for gains, not to mention the targets of these actions will naturally respond by strengthening their resilience to coercion and subversion, use other means to weaken US influence in their area, and seek military alliances of their own with other powers, thus negating any claim of a deterrent for the US or its allies.
There's also the nature of the US military alliance - when actually used to contain large and strong powers, it always involves pitting weaker nations against their neighbours, usually as a type of tripwire. The lack of sufficient military balance without the United States means the high chance of inflicting major and potentially crippling damage against its allies before an actual effective military response. Despite local understanding of US requirements to maintain hegemony, there is always a fear by the local population of US domestic politics creating unpredictable variations in its government's commitment to back local regimes once conflict has started. When a stronger nation attacks a weak nation, not only does the United States need that weaker nation to contribute to total victory against the aggressor, but it also has to ensure the weaker nation doesn't collapse under the burden of military spending, political infighting, low public confidence, and general societal instability, all of which are reasons for US military allies collapsing and signs for the US military to pull out and cut their losses.
The shift towards backing local regional alliances, as opposed to direct supervision of individual allies, is a clear sign of fading US military power, but not necessarily economic power. The United States will play a greater role in propping up the economies of its allies even as they weaken from uncompetitive local labour, aging and overly urbanized populations, and declining foreign investment potential, as they will continue borrowing in US dollars to fund expenditures. However this will only be temporary. It will not prevent these local allies from looking elsewhere to trade in dollars, and should other countries demonstrate sufficient growth potential, then the likelihood of these allies making bilateral currency swap deals, and trading in local currencies with these countries, is high, thus weakening dependency on the United States and incentive to maintain belligerence toward neighbours. That is the one thing that a US military presence has curtailed, and which in the end will force the US government to cut its spending and confront the astronomical debt which it had previously forced other countries to pay for through the abuse of the dollar's reserve currency status.

It is a paper tiger. Guess what its GDP was in 2019? 18 billion dollars. The budget of my city with a population of 1.1 million is 4.7 billion for 2024. Fortunately, my city does not have to fund a military. Don't believe all the military blog hype. Use your analytical skills.@@user-ne6xw1sv4u

Your main criticism is basically that Japan can't project its power (which it can) but thats not its main objective and that Japan lacks replenishment for long distance missions: ever heard of Japans Allies, maybe USA, Australia, India? The US would assist Japan on any long distance deployments with replenishment and so on, and that won't change in the future.
Interesting how most Western/Western allied Equipment or Military is portrayed by this Channel as Overhyped or worse than you think. But then everything regarding the PLAN is great and completely undervalued and has no problems...
"However shier numbers and size can be decieving, disguising many of the little known and unknown weaknesses beneath the surface."
I agree fully with this statement, but not only in regards to this Navy but also other Navies, like the Russian or Chinese one, but that was never mentioned on this channel.

If Japan is at war with China then the US is at war with China (no, don't try to argue with me on that. I was stationed in Japan and we have plans for the defense of Japan, and we have regular exercises with the Japanese Self Defense forces). China will be busy trying to defend its own supply lines from the US Navy. China doesn't have many military bases outside of China (yet). So even with a blue water navy, the PLAN will have serious problems in a war against Japan and the US.

so you think China doesn't know US plans??? those things are easily observed from China.

The outdated US Navy won't survive for long it the US is dumb enough to try to attack China's supply lines.

Don't forget Japan has to ask its U.S. master's permisson to modernize its army, including the building of cutting-edge warships and aircraft in very limited numbers. That's why we still see old warships in duty.

Why are you making a big deal of japan being dependent on energy exports and vulnerable to a blockade when china suffers the exact same issue and here you are never making any videos that would make the PLAN look bad
