Just like China, South Korea's enormous ship building industry provided the foundation of a modern navy fleet with both quantity and quality.
Quality is not guaranteed! Quality comes for standards and regulations that are enforced to ensure the quality standards are met. And even then this can't necessarily be translated to big navy. Tanker or cruise ships have very little in common with naval ships. The metals are different, the equipment is different and imagine if you are making for example a nuclear carrier. It would take years and years before that shipyard would actually capable of making such ship with the quality standards needed to actually make it.
Ofc there are advantages. You have the people that need less training for the job and you have most of the infrastructure needed to make the ship when it comes to building the actual ship.

Shipyards in China and Korea are completely different. China mainly builds container ships, but Korea builds LNG ships and drill ships. 80% of the world's LNG ships are manufactured in Korea. On the other hand, 80% of the world's container ships are made in China. LNG ships mainly made in Korea are 300 meters long, but container ships mainly made in China are 1 km long. If the length is 3.3 times, the volume is 27 times. Although Korean LNG ships are 27 times smaller than Chinese container ships, the price of Korean LNG ships is much higher. The difference is technology. Because China does not have the technology, even if it builds a ship that is 27 times larger than Korea's, it must sell it cheaper than Korea.

Korea has been building its military strength led by the army, so few countries in the world can beat the Korean army. The army has 500,000 active-duty soldiers and over 3 million reserve soldiers. If more troops are needed, it can mobilize up to 10 million soldiers. And they are all veterans who have served in the military.
Finally, Korea has begun to strengthen its navy. We can build Aegis destroyers and submarines. And we are constantly building battleships and submarines. This doesn't stop until we can beat China. It's a historical destiny.

SK biulds ships and subs in a very precisely scheduled manner. Every batch/ship has newer and stronger features than the previous one. Almost one new destroyer every year or ever two years. Same with corvettes and subs. Radar, sonar, torpedoes and missiles. This continuous evolution is the most formidable feature.

Most of the major Chinese coastal or near-coastal cities are within 300 to 1,000 km from some point of Korean peninsula. These days, . SONARs can identify the sound of a ship or sub from several thousands of kilometers away.
Good electromagnetic listening (ESM) can identify the direction(angle) of the emitter very, very quickly. And can memorize the electromagnetic signature of an every sea, land, or airborne emitter. A most advanced anti-ship missile can home-in using this EM signature, without turning on its small radar.
SK is building ships with these capabilities. All Chinese ships and subs are being tracked in real time. China should have made North Korea much less provocative. But China has been doing the opposite·.

I am wondering if South Korea has the capability to build aircraft carriers and luxury cruise ships. So far China is the only country which can build aircraft carriers, LNG tankers and luxurious cruise ships, all of which are the pinnacle of shipbuilding industry.

Historically, Koreans were good with shipbuilding, they've built naval fleet for Kublai Khan during 13th century and known for naval power in Asia but sadly they're not given much credits when they've developed earlier versions of smaller onboard ship cannons and ballistic launchers since early as 14th century.
Korea had one of the most successful Naval Commander in history Admiral YI Sun Sin always went into battle against superior numbers and always came out on top
I've read somewhere that Sejong the Great Class destroyers are secondly only to the Kirov in terms of missile load, US sometimes classifies them as cruisers.

SK destroyer are more heavily armed destroyer with a total number of 128 VLS with a 4 quadruple ASM, compared to US arleigh burke class destroyer 96 VLS & 2 quadruple ASM, and SK destroyer much larger and heavier with a length of 170m and 11,000 tons displacements, compare to US only 154m in length and 9-10 thousand tons displacements. SK destroyers are classified as battle cruisers in NATO standards.

Yes the Korean Navy is larger than most people understand but you missed the two most important weapons and they are the highly trained sailors plus the ROK Marines. I’ve trained with both and they are motivated. The Marines are some of the very best Marines in the world.

The 5" gun out ranges the guns of the North Korean corvettes and gunboats that are not armed with missiles. A significant portion of the NK navy is pre 1960s.
@ycplum7062 Unfortunately the North koreans do have one advantage many of their vessels are small enough to slip past south korean forces and land infiltratiors onto south korean territory and sabotage south korean vessels or lay mines.

The reason that there were not many types of Korean missiles in the past is because the United States blocked the development of Korean missiles based on range restrictions. The use of solid fuels has also been prevented. Therefore, the development of private rocket technology was completely blocked. However, since it was lifted two years ago, we could see many different types of missiles in the future. And rumors say that South Korea has already secretly completed the development of an ICBM.
Korean submarine prowess is legendary. Just ask the US navy what they did during the RIMPAC exercises.

@@sadasasdas8467In the Limpac exercise, the U.S. aircraft carrier was wiped out with Korea's smallest submersible. The U.S. commander was very angry. So the two drills resulted in the annihilation of the U.S. aircraft carrier.
Find that hard to believe, but it was an exercise and there are usually rules regarding exercises, though once a submarine fires her weapons , she has exposed herself and then opens the possibility of being attacked by numerous platforms and if she cannot get fast enough will only become a coffin for the crew onboard. @@simbaski
Did not hear that one, but then I was not involved in Rimpac 2000,so cannot confirm, though as I have said before, once a sub exposes a periscope, radar or anything similar they are open to EW inception and therefore lies the problem of saying one sub sank 10 or more ships unless they were civilian shipping.@@simbaski
have had several COs that were Sub commanders, what you described is how Subs can attack multiple targets, there is a youtube video that came out a few years back describing how an Australian Collins class was able to attack a US aircraft carrier.@@simbaski

No need for a head-on naval battle. There are many vantage points in East and Southeast Asia to place anti-ships missiles. Beside Taiwan and Japan, they could also place them in South Korea maybe even in the Philippines and Vietnam.

The point of large landing ships is having a large marine force forces north korea to use more of it's army in defending the coastline, reducing the numbers of NK soldiers on the frontline. Just like how India plans on using her navy in a land war against Pakistan.
Of course the large LHD is maded Dokdo, which are contested Islets with Japan. However the Islets are too small to land on with these large LHDs, and SK lacks the capability to do landings on any other large island of other great powers.
Also, SK still have large islands she needs to service, as well as North Korean islands.

The SK shipbuilding is too excellent that they became the target of NK hackers for many times. While much of the information is expected to be sold to China, some is kept as a basis to improve NK's aging, low-quality and low-output shipbuilding industry.
In NK, due to the separation of its East and West coasts, the relative negligence of trade and shipping due to the North Korean defense, and the systematic closure of the shipbuilding industry, the level of the shipbuilding industry is not well-received. It is in very poor condition. In terms of shelf-building technology, facilities and capacity, and amount of construction, it is estimated that the overall level of shipbuilding industry technology in North Korea remains at the level of South Korea's late 1960s.

The lighter tonnage of SK Ships have been rumored to be them cutting armor on these ships but then again armor in ships nowadays isnt that important as the goal for ships right now is to not get hit in the first place. Still South Korea's MIC is still new and premature but it is very competitive.

South Korea, the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands are friends.

If South Korea was located somewhere else their naval power might be relevant, but as it is 3 out of 4 of their neighbours are nuclear armed, 2 out of those 3 are nuclear armed superpowers with hypersonic ASMs that can wipe out SK's entire surface navy within 30 minutes with plenty to spare for their intended USN targets, and the last of those 3 has a mutual defence treaty with one superpower and weapons supply deal with another.
So end of the day it doesn't actually matter what South Korea has, their security is entirely dependant on staying on good terms with much powerful neighbours and not get themselves in trouble by picking fights they can't win (Taiwan).

In my opinion, the Indian Navy is still superior in the Asian region, even very superior in South Asia, with sufficient quantity and weapons which are now starting to be modernized and even become the most complete Arsenal of forces, both from Surface Ships, Aircraft Carriers, as well as Reconnaissance Aircraft and Coastal Missiles. The 2 Koreas have been separated for too long already. If Kim Jung Un decides to start reunification process, will he succeed this time? South Korea has US backing but North Korea will have the support from both China and Russia. Remember that all of them are nuclear states.
