  • Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) at the Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference 2024 in Perth, Western Australia, was showcasing the Mogami frigate-successor previously known as "New FFM". The Mogami-class is one of the candidates for Australia's SEA 3000 program / "Tier 2"-requirement intended to supplement "Tier 1"-combatants such as the Hobart-class AAW destroyer and the "Hunter"-class ASW-frigate.

Japan has pretty impressive naval ship construction rate, at 1 (5-6,000-tonne) Mogami frigate per year; actually, it could construct more if there is funding. What is also notable is the ships are delivered on budget and on time. This capability is different from many Western European countries.

In 2025, Mitsubishi's Kure shipyard will build 3 classes of escorts at the same time, FFM, FFM-AW and ASEV.
JMU's Tamano shipyard in 2025 will build FFM-AW and ASEV and the new tanker vessel.
The JMU shipyard in Yokohama will build the first two OPV units in 2025.

BTW that is just MHI, it isn't the entirety of Japan, MHI has the contract to make the Mogami.
There is also Japan Marine United, which makes the huge Aegis destroyers, and the Izumo carrier etc.
The new Taigei submarines have been being built at the same time as well, MHI launching the first one October of 2020, just 1 month prior to their launching of the second Mogami.
The second Taigei is build by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The third will be made by MHI again, they split the submarine amount between those two companies.
Also coming up is the building of the two 12,000 ton ASEV's, basically larger versions of the Maya, and specialising almost entirely on missile defence. The first will be built by MHI, the second by JMU.

What really make the Mogami powerful, will be the type 17 SSM upgraded variant with the 900km range, as well as the new A-SAM missile, which is a naval boosted variant of the upgraded Chu-SAM.
With a low RCS and a very capable anti-ship role, these would play a pivotal role in sinking Chinese ships if war occurs.

I feel FREMM-ITA would be a smarter choice, either the base or the EVO. FFBNW 32 cell capacity up front, but also armed with the 127mm Vulcano. Better propulsion and survivability than the CODAG of the Mogami, too.
I guess I'm just not much of a fan of the Mogami, it's not terribly innovative in any regards. Unlike the FREMM-EVO, F125/126/127, and other next-generation frigate designs coming out of Europe, it doesn't have split funnels which is a vulnerability. By the seems of the Mogami design as well, a single strike amidship by the funnel would also cripple it - a vulnerability not shared by the FREMM-ITA.

There is another option is to acquire and refurbish the 6 Abukuma class, which will be retired in place of the FFMs, or transferring the Hayabusa class missile boat, which was on the Philippine gov's acquisition request list (also hayabusa class is scheduled to be retired). Though it would not be for free, haha ;-), but there might be a possibility to get it at a cheaper price, depending on inter-gov negotiations.
Well, it may be ideal for your navy to get a modified Mogami class, but it may take a long time to get it, because it is a new ship for Japan to be built in the future, so it may take a long time to get it due to the availability of dock space. Besides, it's a new type of ship, so it's expensive. If your country is looking for a quick and inexpensive way to strengthen your navy, the used Abukuma class may be a serious target.
Reinforcing naval power needs much of money and time. For example, It is said that if our country, Japan, had seriously implemented the "88 Fleet Plan" in the Taisho era, we would have gone bankrupt.

Even though this is true, for some reason I doubt Australia will buy Japan's ship though. Why?
Australia is cautious of changing provider basically, Australia already has a relationship with Navantia and bought many ships off Spain, thus Australia likely will continue that instead.
It doesn't matter how amazing the Mogami are, I doubt Australia will buy them.
BTW I am Australian, and there is just some weird thing going on where our government doesn't want to buy military equipment from Japan, even when the USA told us that we should seriously consider Japan as a source for equipment etc.
Maybe there is Chinese political influence inside Australia? It's quite possible, because it seems like it is the labour party who are the leftists who usually have the anti-Japan rhetoric and make out that Australia shouldn't buy equipment from Japan, and there have been many links with Australia's leftist party to Chinese undue influence.

The Alfa 3000 design is too small, navantia ships don’t have a great track record. I can see a pivot from europe to asia so it’s most likely the FFM or the Chungnam. Labor anti japan/pro China thing is BS, the GPF that meets all the criteria will win the contract.

Commonality doesn't matter then you're buying 11 of something.
Not to mention every ship built by Spain for Australia has been full of issues. Look into HMAS Supply and HMAS Stalwart. If Navantia thinks they are a naval ship.buiting company maybe they should learn to do basic things like allkugn propulsion plant and the shafts.
LHD have experienced huge issue too, in less than 10 years of service.
I can say almost certainly say unless Navantia pull some budgetary shinanigans the Japanese and South Korean ships are the 2 front running options. With Japan more likely.
@ziongite you're way off. Australia experimented with Navantia and are 100% not happy with that experience. Navantia just needed to fix rhe AOR but now its going to the courts. They just sunk their chance, which ironically enkugh is what they nearly did to HMAS Supply.

My guess is that Japanese warships from the Hyuga-class onwards will be equipped with TACTICOS + Japanese-made tactical information processing system (ACDS)
In the latest model, this ACDS will be linked with a high-bandwidth tactical data link for coordinated fire control.
The next generation currently under research will be AI-enabled.
I want this ACDS to be a versatile tactical information processing device that can be customized by each country.

The original Mogami class will/are be/being equiped with VLS, some they didn't install right away. They have said that thousand times in media.
The new FFM version is longer then Original Mogami class. The size difference is to get more internal space for variouse electronics and machinery, for newer weapons systems that Japan will/might introduce in the future. USA is starting to use laser on their destroyers and laser need quite a big of energy and the newer radars are also using more energy, thus bigger engine room for generating more energy. And that is also why the designed the enlarged version of Mogami class, just like USA is working on a DDX-class to replace current destroyers and also why constelation class is so big for the weapon package it have, Electricity-production

In addition, the previous class was a minesweeper.
To counter China, the MSDF upgraded minesweepers to frigates.
Armaments were kept to a minimum due to budget acquisition formalities, and VLS was installed at a later date depending on the risk situation.
The reason why the Mogami-class is a challenging model is because the previous class was a minesweeper and a corvette, so there is a certain degree of tolerance for failure.

      The only Japanese-made anti-aircraft missile is a long-range missile.
The domestic ASROC is 6.5m long, so the VLS is even longer than that.

they can bay them, Phillippine do have an harbour. But the guestion si if they can buy it... depends on phillipines budget. And I will say it is outside their budget range. Phillipine Navy have already got 2 new frigates, some are within their budget limits. What Phillipine need to focuse on now is to what they are going to replace their corvettes with. A new build or buy a old used ship again.
If I was Phillipine navy, I would never consider big excpensive frigates. Phillipines have a lot of islands and they can use that to thir advantage by studying Norway Cold war tactics.
build 20-30 - 35 meters 45 knots fast attack crafts armed with a 40-56mm gun, anti ship missiles, radar and a MASS-system or RAM-CIWS, and yous the islands to your advantege. then have smaller groups of reserve-soldiers with local knowledge placed out islands, that can report on hostil movments but also carry Javelins etc. And use those 2 frigates and the corvettes and submariens to prevent submarine movment.

The number of VLS cells is a significant matter for the USN particularly as the Ticonderoga Class Cruisers are nearly end of life. The new Constellation Frigates only include 32 VLS cells instead of 48 which the USN originally wanted.
The Japanese Mogami Class ship model looks like they have VLS but it doesn’t seem like this is a firm requirement.

  • @主水-p5b

If the RAN chooses the upgraded Mogami-class, what will the combat system be?
This is just my guess, but I think that the JMSDF's combat system is composed of TACTICOS + Japanese-made tactical information processing equipment from the Hyuga-class
(This is because, when I was researching TACTICOS, I found a description of the Hyuga-class, and it was also written that Japan insisted on domestically producing the core tactical information processing equipment.)
Therefore, I think there may be an option to change this Japanese-made tactical information processing equipment to an Australian-made one.

    • @LeonAust
      @LeonAust 3 місяці тому

Great question the 11 x Australian ships will be fitted the Australian long range CEAFAR AESA radar system and fixed AESA FCR like on the Hunter class.
The combat system might be a possibility of the SAAB 9LV Combat Management System upgraded version or the AEGIS system.

    • @simmosmithson234
      @simmosmithson234 3 місяці тому

They won’t change it. The SEA3000 project is explicitly scoped to not making changes to selected platforms. Jamming in an Australian combat system or AEGIS would be the definition of failure for this project.

  • @主水-p5b
    @主水-p5b 3 місяці тому +1

I think it would be better to buy the upgraded Mogami class.
    It is a ocean-going grade.
Problems such as rainwater flowing into the hangar due to the slope of the flight deck and crew dissatisfaction due to a defective diesel engine installation have been improved.
The Japanese yen is cheap and the construction period is short, so it will probably be half the price of a European ship.
Medium-sized UUVs can also be operated from the rear dock.
The flight deck is long and wide, so large transport helicopters can land.
The Mogami-class radar also doubles as a periscope detection radar, suppressing submarine reconnaissance activities within a 20km radius of the radar.
The MSDF is also considering installing laserCIWS and HPM.

The upgraded Mogami-class will be able to reach 18 knots with just the diesel engines.
It is equipped with MT30, but I don't think it will be used except for anti-submarine operations.
The JMSDF is aiming to become a blue water navy, so there is no room for error.

Also should consider acquiring an additional one or four FFM or alternatively three Hunter-class frigate, incase the Optionally-Crewed Surface Vessel (OCSV) doesn’t succeed!
