  • After decades of peace, Japan is now confronting the possibility of war. With concerns over a resurgent Russia, North Korea and crucially, a more powerful China in the region, Japan is embarking on its biggest military spend since the Second World War. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5

On Foreign Correspondent, reporter James Oaten has gained unique access to the Japanese military as it fortifies its remote southwest islands with new military bases. The popular tourist destination of Ishigaki, an island that is closer to Taiwan than Tokyo will soon be home to hundreds of soldiers, stockpiles of ammunition and missiles that could one day strike mainland China. The local farming and fishing community is divided over the base, and what it means for their idyllic way of life. The population paid a high price in the dying days of World War 2, fuelling fears that they will once again become a target.

The sad thing about reality that most civilians don't understand is that peace cannot be achieved without a show of force, and it's a fact that there is nothing around it or something in between. That Japanese guy perfectly says it: "While it's not good to have too much, having nothing at all is a lot worse."

Peace can only be achieved through nuclear deterrence. A conventional military does very little for deterrence. If japan wants true deterrence they should build SLBMs, nuclear subs and nuclear warheads. This increase in military spending is just stupid since they could get away by spending 0.1% of gdp on maintaining a 300 nuclear warheads. Instead they spend 10-20 times that and gets a small fraction of that deterrence.

The war between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan ended in China's victory. It is also known as the Second Sino-Japanese War. Regarding the start time of this war, it is generally counted from the "Marco Polo Bridge Incident" (July 7th Incident) that occurred on July 7, 1937, and it is called the "Eight Years of Anti-Japanese War". Some historians count from the "September 18th Incident" that occurred on September 18, 1931, which was the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War defined by the term "Fourteen Years of Anti-Japanese War", but the war ended with Japan in 1945. At noon on August 15, until Emperor Showa of Japan broadcast the war-ending edict to the whole country, Japan surrendered.

Even the jammers are ELTA El/M-8222 Self Protection Pod rather than the Russian ones (because Russia). So yeah, not exactly even a Russian jet at this point, only the main frame is. Most of the sub systs are a mix of Israeli and French systems. "Not long ago, many in Japan were of the opinion that war would not occur without bases, and doubts were raised about increasing defense spending.
However, the war in Ukraine has drastically changed public opinion. The facts of the Bucha massacre and the missile attack on Kiev changed the Japanese mindset.
This shift in public opinion was not only due to the war in Ukraine, but also to the efforts of now deceased Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to strengthen defense capabilities and dispel prejudice against national security."

I think the soldiers that will move into the newly built military bases would need to try and build good relationships with the local community. Though it would make the area a military target if Japan does get attacked, I think they're more safer than not having one. China is more likely to take over an undefended location than not. Especially if the Island are uninhabited or has a small local population. China already does not respect the other countries' territorial waters. Who's to say that the uninhabited islands are Japan's? That's the question China would ask.

It's amazing that 80 years ago, Japan was Australia's sworn enemy. Their treatment of Australian POW's was indescribable in its cruelty. They carpet bombed numerous Australian cities like Darwin and Broome as they moved down through Asia and we became the first nation to beat them in battle (in PNG, long before the Americans had even entered the war). Now, Japan is one of our best friends and our defence departments cooperate at the highest level. I am just so glad we are friends now.

The post-war history of Japan is lightly reviewed by the Japanese.
First of all, Japan has finally started to focus on security in a realistic way, but the war in Ukraine is still a major influence.
I don't know about the living conditions of other countries' armed forces, but the Self-Defence Forces have had their budgets restricted so far, and some units have even had to buy their own toilet paper on base. True story.
I understand that the budget was kept low so as not to provoke neighbouring countries, because if Japan became powerful, there was a possibility of another invasion.
However, generations have changed, the surrounding situation has changed, and there are no fools now who would say that we are going to invade any country. They will be sent to hospital.
And as neighbouring countries are reluctant to increase their military build-up, we have only increased ours to 2% of GDP, the same as NATO.
Next is the opposition, the old man, who is a leftist and mainly a supporter of the Japanese Communist Party (JCP).
In Japan, the older you are, the more left-wing you are, and the younger you are, the more conservative you are.
The people who oppose security, as shown in the video, are basically the older generation in Japan (not to say that there are no young people), and they are the ones who can't see reality. They are a generation that cannot see reality. But they are gradually weakening because of their age. They are not seen by the younger generation, and are often mocked on Twitter.
Thank you for the long answer. If you have any questions, I will answer them (realistic questions only).
