Japan's Fake Destroyer Hiding a Massive Secret

  • Despite being labeled a Destroyer, Japan’s Izumo-class ship is hiding a deadly secret for China.
At first glance, the Izumo is, more specifically, a helicopter destroyer, and the largest Japanese naval vessel since World War 2. But a closer look-the expansive deck, the capability to house the stealth F-35Bs-paints a clearer picture: it is nothing less than a covert aircraft carrier.
As such, it's no surprise that Chinese officials have expressed shock and concern. To them, these are not just mere destroyers, but spiritual successors to Imperial Japan's carriers, readied for potential encounters fiercer than those of the Pacific's past.
Except this time, America’s stealth fighters and Japan’s aircraft carriers are preparing to do battle on the same side. And China does not like it one bit.

For those who don't understand the naming, Japan uses a similar naming convention to the United States. Izumo and Kaga are both Japanese provinces, and historically battleships were named after provinces. It's just like how American battleships were named after states. The previous class of helicopter destroyers, Hyuga and Ise, are also provinces and names of WWII battleships. The Japanese names for ships sound much more distinctive because of how foreign they are that we don't realize they use the same naming convention. If you've been to Japan and wonder why you haven't heard of these provinces is because Japan switch to a system of prefectures early in the Meiji Restoration but the Japanese Navy has always chosen to go with the classic names even to this day. A good example is the amphibious assault ship JS Osumi. It was a ship commissioned in 1998 that is named after a historic province that has never been used before for a ship name.

I'm the 1980s, my father worked in Foreign Military Sales for the US Army. Specifically, he sold the Hawk missile system. He had closed a deal with Japan and had to attend a drunken party his hosts threw to celebrate. A Japanese admiral got too drunk and said something; he was immediately ushered out of the room. My dad asked the interpreter what he said. "He was demanding that Japan build aircraft carriers rather than buying missiles."

In fact, Kaga is the odd one out of the CVs, as it was converted from a BB of the Tosa class, and therefore only one of two CVs to be named after Japanese provinces (the other of course being the Shinano, also a converted BB). So realistically the Kaga name doesn't imply its a CV at all.

There is nothing planned to follow the Izumos to gain fixed wing/STOBAR capability, or to build more of them. The Hyugas are relatively new. Only about 15 years old. Should NATO as a whole increase military spending to counter Russian and Chinese imperialist threats? Yes, but the UK is already ahead on this and one of the few countries in the world with aircraft carriers, matching the same number as China.
Regarding missions in the Indo-Pacific, there are already Royal Navy ships deployed there and they are planning to send a carrier group next year to Japan, so funny you mention it. But also the UK is located in the north-Atlantic so it's almost 3 times further than, for instance the US west coast. And of course that's not even counting the US islands as well as leased naval basis. For comparison, Chinese carriers and/or support ships can't even cross the pacific as UK ships sail 45-50,000km round trips. Or Russia's tugboat powered not-an-aircraft-carrier can barely move anywhere. So the UK is also ahead when it comes to aircraft carriers (Turkey and France have 1 each).

    The Imperial Navy
Kidō Butai, also known as the Mobile Force or the Carrier Strike Task Force, was a combined carrier battle group comprising most of the aircraft carriers and carrier air groups of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the first eight months of the Pacific War. It played a crucial role in Japan's early victories in the Pacific, including the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
The Kidō Butai was formed in April 1941 and consisted of six aircraft carriers, two battleships, two heavy cruisers, nine destroyers, eight oil tankers, and twenty-three submarines. The carriers were the most powerful warships in the world at the time, and their combined airpower was unmatched by any other navy.

Why would China be nervous about Japan, a country with only 11.55% of its population age 14 years or younger. China’s age 14 or younger population is 17.5%

The time had to come for Japan's navy to enter into fully capable defensive and offensive capacities. China can protest as much as it likes, its own policy of claimjng the entire South China sea as its own just accelerated this. What did they think would happen?

pretty sure china building a navy and launching a carrier in 2012
was a direct response to Japan launching these aircraft carrier in 2009.

@@leihtory7423 so china's remarkable claim to the entirety of the South China sea and its claim to Taiwan had nothing to do with it? They only built carriers because Japan did? I think you should widen your focus a bit.

china was not the first to build artificial military islands in the south china sea.
you had vietnam & malaysia building artificial Military islands in philippine waters. in the 90s & 2000s
& thats long before china decided to do the same.
hell you even have south korea building an artificial military island in the yellow sea.
hell you even have taiwan militarizing their island claim in the south china sea. Again In philippine waters.
note Taiwan has that 11 dash line claim.
Where Chinas 9 dash line claim comes from.
And China uses their Coast Guard & Not the Chinese Navy in the South China sea disputes.
And the most violent episode in the South China Sea in the past Decade.
Comes from the Philippine Navy Gunning down Vietnamese & Taiwanese Fishermen.

@@michaelfisher7170 I have to check. Has it been 40 yrs since China fired even a gun at another country?
When was that during their conflict with vietnam in 1980s cold war stuff?
So no China is definitely not building a Navy to invade other countries.
Cant say the same for Japan.
Who is more than willing to participate in USAs military adventurism.
Hell if China wanted to invade Taiwan.
China would have invade those Taiwanese islets off Chinas coast. less the a kilometer from Chinas beaches.
To me the whole China will invade Taiwan tomorrow. is a US narrative to Justify sanction on China. to defeat the Chinese economy. USA wants maintain no.1 stop.

Okinawa is brimming with American armed forces. I know since I commanded the largest US ground radar site there (and work side by side with the JSDG) when I'm not flying on AWACS as a Mission Crew Commander Air Battle Manager. We are there to protect Taiwan and the Japapenses are allowing us to use their territory to do it, so our partnership with Japan does make China concerned. BTW, We are also building new bases on Tinian and Wake Island in addition to upgrades in Guam.
