So when the GH5 II was announced alongside the GH6, I knew the GH5 II was the ideal upgrade for me. While everyone was confused and laughing at the GH5 II, I read all the specs and actually appreciated it and bought 2 of them, as the GH6 is way too much camera for my needs. Highlights of the GH5 II for me? 50% brighter screen. No one talks about that (actually it's the identical LCD panel the GH6 has). Luminance spot meter, Vectorscope doesn't dissapear when adjusting white balance, much improved autofocus (usable now in casual situations), Focus Ring Control giving fly by wire lenses linear manual focusing like cinema lenses. See, the other brands would have forced me to buy a high end camera for those upgrades, but not Panasonic. Also, 4K60 internal 10 bit 4:2:0 finally as opposed to 8 bit. An improved Waveform monitor. Actually, the whole operating system on the GH5 II is pretty much from the S series cameras. VLOG-L built in of course. Slightly better IBIS performance (like the G9, actually, it's right there between the GH5 and GH6). Everything about the GH5 II is great. There are three features of the GH6 that I do like though. The ability to punch in to check focus while recording, up to 60fps. The 4K120. Dynamic range boost isn't all that for me but when enabled (it's automatic in photography), it gives probably about 2 stops better ISO performance. First, punch in for manual focus isn't critical. You can just use an on camera monitor. 2nd, I can shoot 1080p 120fps on the GH5 II then upscale with Video Enhance AI Proteus model to 4K. It's not as good as true 4K but it's perceptually close in most cases. Now, 1080p 120 is line skipped or pixel binned on the GH5 II while it is super sampled on the GH6. With that said, using the "Image Area of Video" option for a roughly 2.6x 2 megapixel 1:1 crop of the sensor eliminates that. Being a tad out of focus also eliminates moire artifacts, and then upscaling with Video Enhance AI will bring back the sharpness. I don't shoot much slow motion so this is a good solution for the occasional times I do. Finally, the GH5 II is pretty good in low light, but if you have to go to a higher ISO, it's nothing that Neat Video de-noising software can't fix. Lower your EV by a stop or even more in low light and shoot with a lower dynamic range profile like Flat or Natural. Most my shots are in good lighting though. Anyways, people over looked the GH5 II. I do like the GH6 (the price is excellent as well), but it's too much camera for me and I'd recommend the GH5 II to most people. You can use the cheap v30 SD cards and be able to enjoy all the features of the camera minus the 400mbps ALL-I 4K recording modes. I prefer the GH5 II overall :)
Gosh damn the GH6 looks almost as good as an S1H! I'll definitely be upgrading in the next few years. The portability of the lens choices for MFT is just unbeatable. It's so easy to bring anywhere it really encourages you to keep shooting which in turn makes you better and better.
You could upgrade your GH5 to a GH5-II and sell your GH5 to offset the financial hit. That will give you an upgrade to 4k60, VLOG L is included in the GH5-II by default, you get streaming capabilities and it uses the same BLK-22 batteries as the GH6.
That’s so awesome you got your hands on a GH6 Ryan! I love watching your videos and I think you explain things from the users standpoint when all other camera review videos just seem to feel gimmicky.
Another really good video that got me going. Right now I'm thinking about whether I should buy the Leica 12-60mm, you're making the decision easy for me. I love your pragmatism in how you approach filming. Your videos about the GH6 are the only ones (and I think I've seen them all) that really convince me, precisely because you constantly prove what relentlessly awesome pictures this camera (like you with the GH5) can produce, when it's in the hands of a real filmmaker.
Learned a lot other reviewers skipped, like you can’t access 5.7 on a GH5 battery. Your footage is absolutely stunning. The best I’ve seen in any review. Thank you! My GH6 should be here tomorrow.
I was also a GH5 user for the last 3 years and I have now switched to the Gh6. I love this camera in combination with the Leica 20-50mm 1.8. - Greetings from Germany!
Wait until you get your hands on the Leica 10-25mm... This thing is a beast with the GH5ii I have. Usually AF on Panasonic is quite good with native lenses. It takes a huge nosedive when you use a metabones etc with adapted lenses.
@@jd5787 I am frightened you are right, but when you buy both the 10-25mm and the 25-50mm then you would spend twice the price of an gh6 and I can't afford that, what a pity
Thx, Ryan! I have been waiting for this - and I will very much consider upgrading after you now have "approved" the GH6 capabilities. I still love my GH5 and use it all the time - and I will keep it as a B-cam anyway. I have used the 12-60 Leica 2.8 as it came with the GH5 kit, when I bought it. It´s my number one lens - and it's just so versatile - and even good for macro. The batteries for the GH6 should be usable for the GH5 as well? Or am i wrong? Do you only use SD cards in the GH6? If so - will you not miss the opportunity to shoot in all the possible modes? Looking forward to watch all your tests and coming videos. Thx for sharing your thoughts and advice! Cheers :-)
Great video enjoyed this one. Very interesting to hear your thoughts on the gh6 was about to buy one but will hold off for now as not fulfilled everything with the gh5 yet.

I find myself in this Panasonic GH6 deep dive over the past few days, and I'm really thinking of upgrading from my Sony a6400 to this camera. I shoot in SLog2 all the time, and hardly use autofocus at all. Actually, only to sometimes grab focus and then set it in manual. I guess sometimes in doc work, autofocus is good for that run and gun need, but........ this camera seems like a tool you can really grow with for a long time, and that's what I'm looking for. I was ready to grab either the Sony a7siii, or the FX3, but I'm thinking........ Damn you Panasonic. lol. Thanks for sharing. Great video.
Hi Ryan! Does these 150MB/S cards really work? When I press the 5,7K mode on the camera it's says that it needs a much higher transfer..... am I mistaking something here? I just bought a CFExpress card so I could actually film in all modes... But I might just be wrong about that I do need such a card?
thank you bro!!! i keep thinking i need to upgrade my 2 GH4s but i am shooting stuff all at the moment so probably not worth the money right now. maybe in six months.
Looks really nice, but I just switched from my Gh5 to the Sony A7SII and I couldn't be happier. The autofocus makes filming easier and I can concentrate more on composition and lighting. However, I think the GH6 is still a great camera.
Great video, think I will stick to my GH5 for now as I don’t think I’m maximising it yet (as seen from my videos). Was the 12-60 lens constant 2.8? I always thought it was 2.8-4. Would you say the image quality of that is worth an upgrade from a 12-35mm lens?
Skipped GH5 still shooting on GH4... I shoot 24p I rarely use the 60p 4k stuff as I find eveyone does that slo mo & thinks it makes their film or project better but I just find it overdone & am mostly shooting indie films or commercials. Do gh4 batteries work in gh6?
I think for Ryan Harris, the GH6 is a no brainer purchase as cameras are a big part of his life and a major income source. But for hobbyists, enthusiasts and part time videographers, the GH5 II is the better option in my opinion :)
Are there options to power it off an external USB-C battery pack? If they keep changing the batteries then maybe it makes sense to just get a couple of GH6 batteries and then use a USB-C powerpack to power the camera.
Afaik they gonna add the option in future firmwares if it's not out already. I'm still gonna use a NF-P adapter to power both my future GH6 and the external monitor through a single battery pack, which is a plus, that's what I actually use for my GH5 right now.
I'm THIS close to pulling the trigger on the GH6. How do you like the photography side of things? Beyond video I mostly shoot landscapes and a bit of macro. Some people say the low ISO noise performance isn't great for stills. Any thoughts?
Not sure if it was mentioned elsewhere here, but the GH6 batteries are the same ones used in the full frame S5 - the DMW-BLK22. I'll probably get a GH6 to go with my S5s at some point, since I still have some nice M43 lenses
Just purchased my first camera which is a Lumix GH6 with 12-60mm Leica lens, i use filmora 11 as i find it easy to create & edit content, mainly film in 4k 50p,can you advise the best settings for this camera and the best looking luts to use?
Did you buy the brand name GH5 batteries? I've used DSTE brand for years now (both camera and FP batteries) and they work great and you can get 6-9 for around $100. Watson batteries are also pretty good - just a bit more than DSTE.
Hey brother Ryan, wuick question. I get that image is great but to get a great image you probably need a adapter meaning a speedbooster and a canon lense or a sigma. So this camera does need some tweaking to get a great image. Also autofocus on this is terrible which means you have to manually focus contastantly right? Or am i mistaken here?

I'm using my GH5 and only in the past year or two have I started shooting 10-bit, and not even doing much in vlog or HLG. That makes me wonder if I don't need to upgrade since I'm technically not maxing out my GH5. I would like a smaller form factor (seems like GH6 is bigger), but maybe I should just ditch my metabones and get one of those more compact Lecias etc.
did you say that the (SanDisk 64GB Extreme SDXC UHS-I Memory Card - 150MB/s, C10, U3, V30) work with 5.7 k .... how about the bit 10- 4.2.0 - / 4.2.2/ or..... Setting that it work? thank!
Im thinking of buying a camera but im confused can you please tell me🥲 I want to use it for videography, slow mo, timelapse, vlogs🥺 please give me some choices📷
Hi Ryan, have you tried a dummy battery in the GH6? I've been powering my GH5 with the Blind Spot Power Junkie + NPF batteries, which is my preferred setup. I wonder if that would have any impact on those grayed-out settings?
Just got my GH6 yesterday and tried this. Using a dummy battery does not allow you to access the shooting modes that you can using the new GH6 battery.
@@JasperMeddockProductions really appreciate that info, Jasper. Unrelated-which vent is the outtake, the I/O port side, or shutter-button side? If on the I/O port side, does it blow a lot of air (on any of the speed settings)? I use a shoulder rig a lot on my right shoulder, and curious if it would be blowing air into my face. Tried Googling this, but didn't find anything (could be my delirium from endless research). Unfortunately, I don't have a camera store near me that has it on display.
@@beef_franks I haven't had the fans kick on at all in any of my testing I've been doing so I don't have a good answer for you. I've shot in 4K60 4K 120 and 5.8K and haven't heard it make a noise yet. Granted I haven't shot outside in full sun for a long time while doing this but as of now I honestly don't know as it hasn't happened yet. When it does I'll circle back to this!
@@beef_franks I did it this morning and the air is exhausted out the left side of the camera so it will indeed blow in/on your face if you're using it on a right side shoulder rig.
What about the huge jitter and judder problem the GH5 has when panning / following moving subjects? For me the GH5 was practically useless because of this. Is this solved now on the GH6 to your opinion?
I recently got the gh6 and have used it a couple times so far but I'm getting static/noise in vlog, even during the day. Is this happening with anyone else? Some of the images I've seen from this thing are incredible, but this static/noise issue is driving me nuts. Some of the luts I've put on improve the images but some images are straight garbage. I knew exactly what to do with iso on my gh5 and its limits, but what's the deal here?
I am going to take your advise and not upgrade to the Gh6. I fought the focus problem on my GH5 for over 2 years, the past year my GH5 hasn't made it to my camera bag.
I hate the MFT look. I had Panasonic for a long time and and shot alot with GH5. Sharp images are not everything. I would go FF and get S1/S5 or Sony a7sIII
Here's a conspiracy for you. Sony makes Panasonic sensors. If m43 had a good auto focus, imagine how many cheaper m43 cameras would be made instead. Think of all that glass. From a profits perspective, its just more lucrative to sell Full Frame.

hey quick question, what kind of processing power do you need in a laptop to run 4K , C4K and 5.7K while editing?
so autofocus is still worse in 5.7k 60p than r6 in 4k 60p?

I want to use it for videography, slow mo, timelapse, vlogs🥺 please give me some choices📷
I have a question, but before my question I want to say I do not own a G6. What makes this G6 better than a Sony a7S III?
I am confused isn't the leica 12 60 not a constant f2.8?
@@JasperMeddockProductions gotcha! Would you be able to turn the fan on manually and confirm which vent the air is exhausted from? Thanks in advance!
Do you mean rolling shutter or stutter? What frame rate are you filming at?
@@absurdtrickster9074 Yes. Mostly 50p at 4K, but happens also at lower quality
Do you use Dynamic Range Boost in 5.7K 60fps?
I was under the impression you filmed in 24FPS? Now 60?
But it can't use 4TB card....Can U tell Panasonic.....PLZ
Can you do 5.7K 60fps in internal Prores?
I thought the gh6 batteries did work in the gh5?
I am going to take your advise and not upgrade to the Gh6. I fought the focus problem on my GH5 for over 2 years, the past year my GH5 hasn't made it to my camera bag.
👍🏾🙏🏾
this is awesome..
Thanks!!
Low light is substantially better than GH5, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised :)
Woohhhh lets go!
What film festivals takes submissions video in 5.7K?
Not sure! The agency that hired me for the job submits my work to film festivals around the globe
I hate the MFT look. I had Panasonic for a long time and and shot alot with GH5. Sharp images are not everything. I would go FF and get S1/S5 or Sony a7sIII
CineD2 on S5 and GH6 looks waaay better than CineD on GH5. It’s way too yellow
Thought i noticed that also eh, thinking the firmware update might help I hope!
you use sd card>? why not mention the CF card cost stop white washing please
Here's a conspiracy for you. Sony makes Panasonic sensors. If m43 had a good auto focus, imagine how many cheaper m43 cameras would be made instead. Think of all that glass. From a profits perspective, its just more lucrative to sell Full Frame.
