Shooting video on cameras with fast lenses and larger sensors is more challenging in some respects than shooting on a phone because it's harder to nail focus. It takes practice, but it's totally worth it. Micro Four Thirds is a great middle ground. This was such a great review! I really am eyeing up my cameras, seeing who is getting sold, so I can get this beast. It was so much fun to review, I am not ready to give it back 😂
I’m REALLY impressed. GH5 is already amazing, to see they’ve improved the AF this much, it’s definitely something I could live with. The more controlled pulsing is fine, it was that jerky zippy back and forth that killed me. I only saw that in the high speed settings so at base, AF is completely fine, by the looks of things, maybe it’s a different story when you actually get hands on it! So yeah, some great additions to an already stellar line of cameras. Can’t wait to try it out, I was going R5C, this release does actually make me think now… hmmmm 🤔
great review. tbh I'm kind of glad Panasonic didn't do too much with the autofocus. It's like they made it just good enough to be usable for vlogging and some gimbal shots, but are still forcing you to use manual focus for proper story telling cinematography. I'm dreading a day when professional filmmakers are using autofocus for narrative films... And wow those new codecs, frame rates and resolutions! And of course all the filmmaker tools we've fallen in love with like shutter angle and wave form, and even better anamorphic shooting abilities. I'm sold.
Why dread it? If it is working, controllable and predictable, it really doesnt have to be a problem. Its the same conversation in DJ'ing, people complaining because you now have the ability to instantly match a BPM with another track. Why complain about something that makes your life easier and allows you to focus your creativity on something else?
@@_MJ07_ because controlling focus can be an important tool for storytelling in a way that AF can never do. Good AF can keep an object in the frame in focus, but it can decide which object should be in focus, or when something shouldn't be. If you know when to use it, fine, but if you rely on it for every shot your creativity is going to be severely limited.
@@TJA86 and that's why I said if it's controllable and predictable. With the rise in touch screens, improvement in focus motors and af systems, there is no reason you can't be creative with AF, and it will only get better.
@@_MJ07_ sure, if you're actively using the touch screen to control focus, but that's hardly AF anymore, at least not in a way that's related to the AFC that everyone complains about not working well, which is what i was referring to... in fact the GH5 has some of the best touch screen controlled AF modes I've ever seen.
@sk you should tell the producers of Ozark to stop using panasonic because they suck. And maybe tell ARRI to end the PL mount lens system because they don't have any way to offer autofocus. And all the other companies that sell $100k cinema lenses with no autofocus...i guess they're just wasting their time.
I love manual focus too. Full artistic control over every situation. At my work I use a Sony A7iii and the amount of times the autofocus has messed up in video mode during product overview videos. I leave it in manual focus these days too and that's a Sony! lol I used to be one to always dig technical features but having half the production in my hand movements and sub conscious thinking vs letting the camera decide what it thinks I want is so much more satisfying and simple. Also can do it for any camera past present future.
Used the GH5 for five years and built a six figure business using it. It was one of the first cameras inexpensive cameras to have 4K60p when it came out in 2017. The C300 Mark II didn't have it with a $16K price. Panasonic changed the industry forever with the GH5. Till this day, Panasonic is still one of the only mirrorless camera manufacturers including shutter angle in their bodies (Sony A7SIII $3500, FX3 $4000, & Canon $3800 R5 + R6, $2500, what's going on?). Even though autofocus would have completely won so many people over with the sub $4K price bracket, at $2200, you are getting many features that you cannot get from Sony and Canon at twice the price.
This is so true. I have a BMPCC6K Pro and shoot mostly in ProRes. This would be a great camera to compliment the BMPCC. I also have a GH5s and could at the Atmos recorder but this makes more sense to have internal recording or just out to an SSD in a smaller setup. Love what Sony can do but shutter angle and other features of this camera make this my go to light weight rig B-Roll and the BMPCC6K for my main shots. For $2200 you can't go wrong and Panny will add updates down the road. It's a great camera for the price and features.
I think the biggest issue with autofocus with most youtubers is that they're not used to using lumix cameras so they don't know how to swipe to quickly adjust and keep the autofocus spot on. That's my favourite feature, in comparison to sony where you can't tap to focus.
I have never been so excited about a camera oh my gosh. I have the GH5 and currently mainly shoot with two Canon EOS R's, but this... man it just reminds me of all the amazing things I've done with my GH5! This camera looks amazing!
I use a G7 and I honestly love it so this GH6 might be the next thing I try to get. Has everything the G7 is missing and I actually enjoy Micro four thirds. Also if your friend wants to send me one of his Panasonic cameras just for fun that’d be great 😅
Clicked off Gerald's video to this one. Thank you for all the sample footage and comparisons. I gotta say, the GH6 is growing on me again. I wish Panasonic + Leica would complete the line of f/1.2 Nocticron primes: 12mm, 25mm, 42.5. The Summilux zooms are great but a bit heavy.
This was the most helpful, Review on the Panasonic gh6 I've seen so far on UA-cam, I've wanting to upgrade my G7 and was considering the Gh6 and this helped alot to make that decision.

Thank you for your work. Would you recommend the GH6 or EOS R3 for video work? 60-70% vlogging and 30-40% client work (video and a little bit photo). Especially in terms of video quality and stabilizer / ibis (vlogging...) Thank you for your help and feedback.
This camera is insane given it's competition. Even tho the autofocus is much improved, it's still a little bit of a letdown though. Especially considering the competition. I don't know how they can keep using phase detect points being detrimental to image quality in specific situations as a reason to stick with DFD contrast AF when Olympus has hybrid phase detect and their autofocus is basically as good as canon and sony...on micro four thirds still. If Panasonic and Olympus/OM systems teamed up, we would have the perfect camera.
Damn, this makes me wanna sell my X-T4. God I hope Fuji will come up with similar cool ideas for the X-T5. The waveform, the 100mp shots, all the in-camera settings. I really hope the X-T5 will also be so video orientated, as I'm too poor to afford the A7SIII

Man, Panasonic does it again 😍 as a filmmaking camera this is a no brainer but if you need a GH6 as your primary cam for everything (UA-cam videos, photography etc) then that autofocus is going to be an issue. Still, for the price you can't ignore it...
I use Panasonics for everything I do and the AF is never even slightly an issue. I just don't do a shallow dof of my own talking head. Avoid that one type of shot and you can do everything with manual focus. In fact your UA-cam videos will look dramatically better if you don't do the stupid show the product directly to the camera stuff. Shoot b-roll and af no longer matters at all.

@@messyfilms6325 full frame has a higher demand on the sensor read speed. It could be a whole generation of processor away, meaning a whole new camera release, before you see it on FF.
I was thinking the same thing. Only thing that made me 👀 was the internal ProRes feature but if you own a Atomos Ninja you’re covered on that plus we have FF so I’m most likely going to wait for the S1H mkii
Don't keep your hopes up. The sensors are a7iii sensors, I don't have the data spec sheet but if Sony doesn't have it in the spec sheet it will never happen. That's the reason why the S1/S1H/S5 do not have full width 4k60p. It is limited by hardware architecture, processing power, and heat management. Not firmware.
Man, the part that got me was the low noise at the higher ISO register, given that this is a micro 4/3 sensor. I remember dreaming of the day that this tech would come out, shooting with a Panasonic GH4. I also lost it when the crown f'n popped out of your mouth mid-sentence.
switched away from m43 for the sony a74 and I am having major buyers remorse. I'd rather sacrifice autofocus for having video features that would typically come in a camera many thousands more. Outside of not having as great of dynamic range, this camera seems fucking amazing, I hope other companies start providing similar features at a lower cost, cough cough sony charging a grand for tally lights like wtf is that and type A cards to match
@sk 5.7k 60p vs 4k 60 for one, I use a metabones adapter so they are both APC sized giving the win to Panasonic. For action content, the rolling shutter is worlds better. Provides 4k 120p at 10bit where the a74 doesn't even provide 1080p 120p 10bit. The GH6 doing internal prores and not needing an external recorder (literally saves thousands) whereas the A74 hasn't been given any external upgraded recording features to my knowledge. Like, guys, I'm not trying to be biased but the video features outright slap the A7s3 and this camera is cheaper than an A74, again outside of autofocus and depth of field which a metabones adaptor and fast lens solve. Also has a higher mechanical photo burst with a cool although Jpeg electronic mode (I feel it would provide similar results to simply filming and pulling screenshots but I could see the usefulness of having the JPEGS straight out of the camera. All this and I haven't even mentioned IBIS. To summarize for video cinema-style work this is a no-brainer even when compared to the A7s3 and maybe cameras of a higher tear than that, for photo, not really but still provides more in that department than I was expecting.
If the G85 had canon, Sony, or Olympus level autofocus it would be the perfect camera imo. Damnit. I have one still, switched to EOS M6ii mostly to keep using my sigma 18-35 and have great AF.

So yeah, some great additions to an already stellar line of cameras. Can’t wait to try it out, I was going R5C, this release does actually make me think now… hmmmm 🤔
Enjoy this then. ua-cam.com/video/xqKTamQm-Vw/v-deo.html The AF is garbage. Always has been and is still currently.
So fun. You talk as fast as a Gilmore Girls episode while somehow still informing me. Love it.
Holy moly.. you got me there at 1:10 Gene! Lmaoooo
The sigma 50 - 100 you used is my dream lens!
great review. tbh I'm kind of glad Panasonic didn't do too much with the autofocus.
Got my GH6 and Luminar Neo…time for some fun this week.
The tooth part was fucking hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing.
Holy mother of god. This was a review and a half. Excellent.
If Panasonic had a solid autofocus... With my G9 I am getting good at manual focus lol and I kind of like it!
I love manual focus too. Full artistic control over every situation. At my work I use a Sony A7iii and the amount of times the autofocus has messed up in video mode during product overview videos. I leave it in manual focus these days too and that's a Sony! lol
I used to be one to always dig technical features but having half the production in my hand movements and sub conscious thinking vs letting the camera decide what it thinks I want is so much more satisfying and simple. Also can do it for any camera past present future.
If you want to know everything about a camera.. potato jet is the ultimate channel
Great video, really well put together. Super excited for this camera. Been on a Sony a6300 for over 5 years. The GH6 might be the move.
The GH6 looks freaking great!!!! Excited to get my hands on one! :)
Absolutely true. I can't agree more.
@@LockedOnFishing man can you share you grading skill to make GH5S look as pockets?
I think the biggest issue with autofocus with most youtubers is that they're not used to using lumix cameras so they don't know how to swipe to quickly adjust and keep the autofocus spot on. That's my favourite feature, in comparison to sony where you can't tap to focus.
1:07 hahahha i was dying at this part🤣.
I too was wtf lol🤣.... that was great
I have never been so excited about a camera oh my gosh.
Also if your friend wants to send me one of his Panasonic cameras just for fun that’d be great 😅
The GH6 looks amazing. The image is beautiful!
Whoa. This might beat out my S5 but I really like having full frame.
It’t don’t.
Man, you're the best when it comes to video.. Well done!
Needless to say I'm very much interested in this camera, already rocking a GH5 and S1 😎
As a Panasonic user this camera is a game-changer! Hopefully, I can get my hands on one and test it out myself.
I dont like geralds channel. He is nothing but a numbers guy.
@@andersistbesser yeah him and those damn detailed facts instead of a bunch of anecdotal BS like this clown
When all of your favourite creators release a video at the same time on the new GH6 and you only watch Mr Potato's channel!
Awesome Detailed well made video, kudos
This is by far the best review of this camera.
This is a market disrupter. Once this thing hits the secondhand market it's gonna be awesome
This was the most helpful, Review on the Panasonic gh6 I've seen so far on UA-cam, I've wanting to upgrade my G7 and was considering the Gh6 and this helped alot to make that decision.
Dang! Must have had this review embargoed until just now, I got 4 GH6 new video notifications! 😍
@M i c e l a🍎 No one gives a fuck.
Very cool, and great review... Been vlogging, and doing high end client work with Lumix M43 for years. Excited to this update!
I shoot my short films on a LUMIX G9 and they come out beautifully. So tempting to upgrade but my G9 is amazing
cameras are all good now...
GH5 mark II is better than the G9. New processor.
Great review, I've watched dozens so far and I must say this one is the best! Cheers
Interesting🤔I would love to see a comparison of this and the S5
Me too!
🤔 😆 🤣 😂 😅 😄 when your youtube feed shows all the cool kids 😎 with their gh6, for some reason I always go with potato and kai....You too seem the most genuine down to earth 🌎 for me.
Geez, when will they get the memo from the fans about the autofocus? 😀
Thank you for your work. Would you recommend the GH6 or EOS R3 for video work? 60-70% vlogging and 30-40% client work (video and a little bit photo). Especially in terms of video quality and stabilizer / ibis (vlogging...)
Thank you for your help and feedback.
At this point the autofocus thing is a conspiracy lol
Yeah honestly the rest is amazing but it doesn’t matter if the auto focus is bad. Which it appears to be
Showing Menu made your video pops up from competitors' videos. Thanks Jet.
Love my XT-4 but you nailed it
@@ActionXander why do you love it? it’s a 🗑 camera
@@Archonsx "trash camera" is pretty harsh. I do love it's durability (I've taken this camera this many extreme environments) and the colors/lenses glasses are fantastic
I don’t think they’re comparable? I thought X-t4 was primarily for photos?
Best review I've seen yet! I know it's only launch day but killer job
I love my S5 but I'd be in the market for this if I wasn't so happy already. Love my Lumix. All the menus are even the same
The GH6 would make for a beast of a B cam for the S5. I own one as well, but as Gerald Undone has mentioned, the S5 with it's full frame sensor still produces better image quality compared to the GH6.
One of the best reviews on a camera - as always!!!
looks like a really nice Camera. Would love to see a comparison between this and the Bmpcc 6k pro as they are the same price ( at least in Germany) and both pretty much have no af and great Image Quality. I guess then its just a features comparison Ibis internal nds battery life and so on.
Pocket 6K would win out.
6kpro is on a different league.
@@mrshaheedmalik never! Gh6 is a hybrid. Guys like me dont buy a camera without ibis, no flipout and no af. The gh6 can do 25mp still and the af is more than good enough for me.
@@nigerian-nightmare it is not! I dont see anything it is better than the gh6
@@andersistbesser you need to look at Juan Malera's Pocket 6K to Alexa Lut comparing the footage then. The Pocket 6K is close enough to Arri level. This camera doesn't compare.
There's no better review of this fantastic camera out there, you are a beast man!
I’m sorry I’m only 3 minutes in but how you gonna go on without explaining the tooth?! 🤯😨
I have no idea what you’re talking about.

BEST VIDEO on the new GH6 Hands down!
Bought a GH5 II recently even though we knew the GH6 was coming out. I’m loving it so far and will be using it as my primary vlogging & UA-cam camera (coming from a Sony A6400). The GH6 definitely looks very enticing but I don’t need the higher resolutions (my iPad wouldn’t be able to handle it or the memory requirements) and the price is out of my league.
Anyways, this was an excellent review! Appreciate all your effort you put into all your videos 🙏🏽
Still, these Panny improvements will migrate to different cameras
You deserve every subscriber and more, incredible review, must have taken days to make.
I would really like to see a comparison of GH6 vs OM-1, especially how their AF compare😉
OM-1 is better
@@kifley19 Probably, but I haven't really seen any reviews of it from filmmakers, Olympus probably decided to give it to test mostly to photographers🤷♀
It looks like the OM-1 has phase & contrast detect AF so in theory it should be better AF or at least not have the same pulsing issues.
The color graded VLOG footage looked really good.
@@Whatsup_Abroad not sure I agree. For talking head if you move quite a bit AF is pretty important.
I am hard for that Camera! Great video as well, Potato.
Did they stop improving the dynamic range two generations ago?
unfortunately I think the only camera that has wowed me wiith dynamic rangeis the canon c70 with it's DGO sensor (and they addded raw)........unfortunately it's very expensive.supposedly this is better. though will have to wait for test
@@legendp2011 Gerald’s real dynamic range test on gh6 was 12.5 stops
@@richnationfilms seems decent, if only it had internal raw (may get prores raw update) and decent autofocus.
Most relaxing GH6 review on youtube.. :)
This camera is confusing on so many levels... Lol thankfully I know Lumix has 4k120 capabilities and will patiently wait for them to add that to firmware for our S5 and S1 bodies😬 Great video tater! Much love from East Tennessee🙏🏼
I have the S5, do you think they’ll do that update??? Could they just go all the way and do 4k on their 180?
@@messyfilms6325 full frame has a higher demand on the sensor read speed. It could be a whole generation of processor away, meaning a whole new camera release, before you see it on FF.
@@-grey booo
A74 seems like a beast. I’m not sure how you’re regretting it.
The only thing that impressed me was the IBIS. But Sonys active and gyro stabalisation is so useful as well.
@sk maybe but I’m honestly curious because I’m considering upgrading to either the a74 or the gh6
Should have gone for the S5 then
@sk 5.7k 60p vs 4k 60 for one, I use a metabones adapter so they are both APC sized giving the win to Panasonic.
You're really good at doing the sponsorship, makes me really tempted to get it.
I think I'll be sticking with my trusty GH5 and G85 combo.
If the G85 had canon, Sony, or Olympus level autofocus it would be the perfect camera imo. Damnit. I have one still, switched to EOS M6ii mostly to keep using my sigma 18-35 and have great AF.
G95 and the Gh5 Mark ii is better than the weak G85 and GH5.
@@thewalkingvloggingman7152 Nice try, Panasonic. you're not getting my money that easily.
