4JH is a great engine. Just sold the 4JH-2TE in my 1997 Hylas and she ran beautifully. Obviously now is the time to put new engine mounts on and spray all the rust spots. If you can, put a drain plug in that sump with a hose before you install her so that you can run the hose to an external electric pump. That's the set-up I had and it really made oil changes super easy! Good luck.

Second contact is second hand chart plotters and instruments radar so on in also U.K. based . If you guys need these contact details I will send in comments on here. Also I see you will need a pod to hold a chart plotter at the helm and these are expensive . I have a contact for this as well cheap 😁
Patience and persistence are excellent virtues in a project like this. You've got them in spades! Congratulations on getting the engine. It's going to be super interesting to see how you put these disparate parts together. There'll be bumps in the road but we are with you all the way. Great job.

Marseille to Sète, that's a long drive ! I hope you took some times to walk and have a look at the Calanques in Marseille, or the étang de Thau in Sète in between the drives those are cool places, anyway, I think that engine looks in good condition, but certainly better than the forklift, I think they missed a few maintenances, it does not looks very safe Good luck with that engine, and the whole ship in general, still a lots of work to do, but a whole summer ahead, which surely won't help, the temperatures can get very high in the south, like sometimes over 40°C, it's probably hard to do anything at such a high temperature. Working on such a boat is a very big and complexe project, but with some times and love as everything, I'm sure it's gonna end up looking awesome ! Keep it up !
We didn't stop in the calanques but we stopped in aigues mortes. Drove through the Camargue on the way home. We got home with two engines. Tbh it took a few days to realise I don't need to look for an engine anymore. So happy. Thanks for watching 😃
.... you got an engine .. well done ..... massive upside, you can do all the beautification/paint outside as opposed to trying to do your best on an engine installed ... bright clean/painted engine room for a pristine engine ..... yes am repeating myself .... well done! .... have you ever seen those people that start out with say a washer and continually trade up and end up with something unimaginable considering what they started with, like say a house ..... all those bags of goodies from the second engine may bring more than you ever imagined ... sorta like that scenario of selling a junker car for say a hundred, but parting it out realizes way more .... love your optimism ... thx for sharing .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ...
Re the engine mounts, have you thought about getting them sandblasted to clean and strip them back? Once again, it would be cost of sandblasting by someone else v trying to clean them yourself. Keep cracking on.
Hiya, Funny you should mention the engine mounts. We were reading today, Yanmar recommend that the mounts should be replaced after 4 years. These are no doubt the original. So it looks like new engine mounts are going on. Cheers for watching 😃
If you can't sell the 'Spare' engine as is, be sure to strip all the possible spares from it before scrapping. I'm sure you will appreciate having a working spare starter, injectors and such, but I'm also sure you've already thought of that!
We got the gearbox which was the main reason. Now we have a loads of spares, that need cleaning and organising. Then just the block to sell. I think we made the right choice. Cheers for watching 😃

There’s a lot of anxiety when it comes to buying used engines, I bought a rebuilt engine for my 67 Camaro, I was a nervous wreck until the day I fired that engine. It’s a lot of money on the line, and so many things can go wrong, I hope you are both blessed by the engine gods.😂
We get the whole stress thing. I've personally just given up on worrying about it. All it will be is more time. Plus a huge pain in the neck. Cheers for watching 😃

As you do the inspection I would clean up all parts of the motor and repaint that way it be clean rust free and you can check all gaskets and fittings good luck

All starting to come together. I was a bit worried that the pallet was going to split in half with all the weight, as it was been carried 90deg to hopw it should be. Allways have the top slats across the forks not in parallel. Saw one split once when it was full of crates with bottles in, made a right mess. Looking forward to seeing the work on the engine and its install.

Did you see the engine hand cranked to make sure it's not froze up. If this Yanmar doesn't have a compression release, then removing the glow plugs should allow hand cranking the engine.
The engine turned over lovely. Good compression. Next is to strip it done, have a look inside and renew the gaskets. Give it a bit of paint etc Step by step... Cheers for watching 😃
GBU bought a brand new British made Beta Marine engine and gearbox unit for that kind of money. Well congrats anyway looks like a fine engine. For that kind of money we're you not tempted to buy a whole fleet or a completer boat?

I didn't buy a boat engine for a boat. A168F 3 HP air cooled Chinese diesel, brand new. It's 44 LBS and should devote half of it's power to making 12 volts. There are bigger undersized air cooled diesels for giant boats, too. The hot air is welcome.

Mine too, I altered my beds so the engine sat level. Yanmar is a major marine engine maker & added this feature for a good reason. Ur old beds probably need refurbishing.
Hi David! You comment got us a little worried. We called Yanmar and they referred us to some engineers in England who said 8 degrees is ok and those engineers recommended some other engineers who said the same thing. 8 degrees installation, maximum 15 degrees under power. Our engine bed is 6 degrees so all is good. Thanks for your concerns. It’s always best to double check things. We are happy we made the right decision. Cheers!
They are reasonably good motors but like the volvos the parts are very expensive. A Beta Marine would have been a better choice, but it's very hard to find a used one. Being cheap to operate, people run them till they are complete junk or need a complete rebuild at a machine shop
Sump has been sitting in the drink,with stray current they rot out quick,happened on my old man’s prawn trawler in less than 12 months,second hand engine with rattle can refurb.Knowing now I’d have resin painted the sump before going in.

It's a canted drive so the motor will be level Yanma designed it for that reason don't change it!!
We'd love to keep it, but our engine bed had an incline, so we need a parallel gearbox.

Sump has been sitting in the drink,with stray current they rot out quick,happened on my old man’s prawn trawler in less than 12 months,second hand engine with rattle can refurb.Knowing now I’d have resin painted the sump before going in.
Great idea on the sump.
Hoping we don’t get that much water in the bilge.

I have one gripe, I have no idea what the order of the videos is? It’s seabird sailing then getting a motor then selling seabird… I m confused. My dream is vague.

Yanmar are great engines but the paint they use at the factory is not so good, they rust really bad.
