Fantastic video. As an on-an-off UYA runner I was already somewhat familiar with Silence's story, but it's really cool to see it all laid out like this. I had no idea so many strats we still use today were discovered by them.

An extremely interesting idea I've kinda been thinking about for a long time: Set up two parallel communities for the same game, but isolated from eachother. Anyone can join one or the other, but not both. Then watch what optimizations, glitches, etc. are found between each isolated community, see if they come up with the same/similar optimizations, glitches, etc. Let each community go for about a year, each isolated to their own discord servers, where all streams, glitch hunting/theorizing is done in each. I guess at some point it might get hard to keep from contaminating things, but it'd be interesting to try to let it run for a year or so.
Love how you used Massive Stunner from Tekken 5 for the speedrun montage, i always thought it would fit in a speedrunning video, truly a man of culture.
Entire Speedrunning Community: Amazing! You beat the world record and your segmented run! Silence: Wanna see me do it again? Entire Speedrunning Community: Okay...please...we need something that feels achievable by others. Please leave your record as is... Silence: I'll fuckin do it again.
When I think of 3D games that are absolutely torn apart, I usually think of N64 games (as I'm sure most people do). But WOW, R&C is on another level. The movement tech just looks so beautiful in motion. Some games are broken and just look horrid (personally early OOT side hopping just looks ugly) but IG somehow made both Spyro and R&C wonderful for speedrunners to destroy.
when I casually played this game back as a child, I found it fun just moving about, while in the starship I somehow (could never replicate it) charged through the corner of the starship, somewhere near the elevator, from where I suddenly noticed the glowings of some hookshots, I wasn't able to get there and could never get out again, but as a child I thought it was some super secret thing. Interesting to know that ended up becoming something for speedrunners.

I remember in the summer of 2014 I was into RaC 2 speedrunning, as the first and third games hadn't really interested me much, and one day I found silence's 37:46 run of UYA and it blew my mind. I had never seen anything like that before! It inspired me to give UYA a try and I had a lot of fun learning all that movement. Had an absolute blast playing through the game that way. silence's a legend, I hope he returns some day.
I'm so early yet I'm super happy. Ratchet was a major part of my childhood. I'm now used to like the video before watching it, because I'm already sure it will be majestic. Thanks Ricky!

Great to hear Worms Armageddon's majestic soundtrack in this! I know it's off-topic but that game really deserves some love. The online scene is still alive since '99, still receiving official patches and content, as well as copious amounts of mods, gamemodes, maps and what not from dedicated players. The speedrunning community is just flourishing on that, too. It's amazing how no matter how beautiful the moves of the veterans are, we still find out new stuff about the game from time to time. Truly an outstanding experience, that title.

With all that running and jumping no wonder how Ratchet got broken in half. Im no where close as good as any runner on UYA, but when I casually replay the games I might just try a few tricks for fun.
There was a guy called "The Silence" on R&C3 online, with 4 bolts in every game mode. Pretty rad dude, but I doubt it's the same guy considering we were on American servers.
@@danuzz_ when the ps3 remaster was launched, it actually had a multiplayer and servers you could play online at the time. I think they shut down around 2018.

I love the Shadow of Colossus music used, really gives character to silence's skill.
I was looking for this comment
You mean at the 12:39 part? I’m high key looking for the name of that sound bruh 😩!!
With all that running and jumping no wonder how Ratchet got broken in half.
Im no where close as good as any runner on UYA, but when I casually replay the games I might just try a few tricks for fun.
your video essays are the best and your channel is super important to the community thank you for your research and passion
babe wake up new ricky video
There was a guy called "The Silence" on R&C3 online, with 4 bolts in every game mode. Pretty rad dude, but I doubt it's the same guy considering we were on American servers.
Maybe he was in the american servers because r&c is more popular in america, so he could find more players more easily?
Just a guess tho
@@bigcraudio3066 He ran on a japanese PS2 and PS3 copy of the game which as far as i know don't have online multiplayer :(
@@danuzz_ when the ps3 remaster was launched, it actually had a multiplayer and servers you could play online at the time. I think they shut down around 2018.
@@bigcraudio3066 Maybe he played it then 🤷 could explain that he was first doing the runs on ps3 because that was the version he played multiplayer and later switched to ps2 because it was optimal for speedruns at the time. just speculation though.
@@bigcraudio3066 japanese ps3 didnt have multiplayer still
Hearing Massive Stunner slowly creep up gave me the chills haha, love that song
Great video as always :)
Jesus, I can't even imagine the dedication and smarts required to find all these glitches and tricks, and much less perfecting them like this in a single-segment run.
Also, big props to Xem and the other runners for actually beating that time holy moly
I Just love this Channel, these stories are incredibile in their own regard and these runner deserve their efforts to be shared with the world! Great job!
P.S: also, the editing on your videos Is so good as well!
such a good video
I loved ratchet and clank 3, I played through it so much, never thought I’d see such game breaking content
I remember being 10 years old when this game came out and I found all of these tricks. Cool to see someone else found all of these tricks as well.
man, this video takes me back to around when word of Silence's runs/glitches started to spread publicly, so this brought back a LOT of nostalgia. I'll never forget how revolutionary his findings were. I'm not a runner but I have watched speedruns for these games for a good while and I can further confirm that this was 100% when things got quite interesting!
Thanks Ricky for creating a video on this legend, and providing the quality work you do as always :)
i have to give it to you. showing your friends' profile photos is extremely brave. constantly reminding yourselves the plastic lives you live. and the fact that you will ALWAYS be virgins. very impressive.
