I was actually part of the original development team (albeit a small role) and I can tell you that a suspicious amount of glitches in his original run were known remaining bugs flagged by the QA team. Many devs suspect that Satvara was either on that QA team or had an inside connection.
That was my take too when I watched the videos. No way this guy found out a lot of those stuff so early in the shelf life of GoW unless he was a QA, a tester or part of the dev team. Some of the stuff he showed clearly indicates prior knowledge and intrinsic knowledge of how the game was built and the engine of it.

Satvara is like the dude in Anime who shows up halfway through the current arc and just shits on the main character for a week before becoming an ally.
"Sequence breaking are not breaking the game but it merely uncovers the truth, of what was always there." This made me realize that the glitches are waiting to be found and who knows it even exist. A player like Satvara explored the game beautifully to its extent and his love for the game inspired many others. Satvara is the definition of Built Different.

@@PerryKobalt His milk taking took some time but glitched everyone else in the real life. Now that's a milking method that can be called "super effective".
Man, I can't imagine how Satvara felt by showcasing everyone he was telling the truth from the very beginning, and the faces of disbelief those who doubted him had. It must've felt so incredibly good to him, like, everyone enjoys being told that they had the reason, right?
Judging from this video alone, GMG is the one who gives me the average reddit mod vibes, but ofcourse I shouldn't make such judgement without actually knowing more about him.
Imagine being GodModeGod thinking you're talking down to an utter peon and a baseless shittalker only to realize you're actually speaking to the Micheal Jordan of GOW speedruns. Don't get me wrong, he should have backed up his claims immediately, but everyone assuming be was bluffing was hilarious knowing Satvara was days away from making all of them eat their own words.
Satavara's story summed up. Satvara: "Hey guys, not bad, but I'm better. Seriously, don't even try, fuck you for thinking it." Everyone: "That time is bogus, it's not even possible." Satvara releases videos proving it, builds upon his work and becomes the single greatest speedrunner in God of War's history. Then he flips everyone off, leaves, comes back YEARS later... does it AGAIN... and then yeets himself out to take care of his ailing mother.
Random person: Good work bro, you're amazing! Satvara: *I personally wouldn't consider it as a work, what i did was just to test myself in to push my limits as a personal expericence, also we don't have any kind of parental relation for you to make that claim. As for you judgement of my performance what does your concept of quality, what exactly are you considering when you say that it was a good run? is it for my skills when i interact with the mechanics that are being discovered thanks for what anyone would consider as a product of my dexterity and cunning, or is for the supposed superior quality of the run when compared to the others instances submited by other players? Either way i suppose i shoud thank you for your consideration and your choice of words.*
This is one of the few times in the history of the universe where the villain (Satvara) delivered and wasn't talking shit. I am reminded by a recent video of Charlie (penguinz0) also seeing this phenomenon, where a jerk had proven his superior skill on piano. Simply astonishing.
That piano guy was a total dick, no piano playing is redeeming that. He basically called out someone else creation and said this is shit, I can do better. He's a sore winner
To be fair that guy wasn't near the same jerkness as Satvara and he never held anything against the original piano player he just said he could have played the piece better, his beef was with some random youtube comments that were calling him out to do better.
Satvara may not have even been a villain and just someone with a social disorder like ASD. Nothing in this video implies a malintent. His paradoxical help towards the community and respect for GMG. His is only true lash-out was for not being believed and when you consider potential circumstances, it's entirely logical and reasonable. If you could not maintain a theory of mind and you knew that you had proof; it's likely all you could do to reason about how others think is project your knowledge and thoughts onto them. AKA assume everyone knows everything you do, why would he need to give proof, then be confused why people who have proof are doubting you. He didn't realize he had to prove it until he became offended by doubt that he didn't perceive necessary. A neurotypical may discount people and say things like it was only an experiment to humblebrag, but it seems to me that layer of manipulation is devoid in him. It was a legitimate fear he would be shamed for it. He just used proof and logic(from his closed-mind), all his reasoning is self-consistent/valid within small axiomatic systems. I think it likely, that through logic, he was attempting self-moderation when it came to considering the community at large and how there should have been a significant one. Someone with false confidence about their abilities wouldn't be trying to break it down in this way. They wouldn't simultaneously have offensive levels of confidence and the proof to back it up either. They also wouldn't immediately disengage from the affront when it was lifted. THey'd hold a grudge. I understand trolls often emulate aspects of this behaviour, aka social ignorance, but it doesn't mean everyone is doing it with manipulation in mind. Now it's entirely possible satvara was just a prideful skillful sunuvabitch. His behaviour just isn't consistent with that. It seems to me he's otherwise tolerant, only triggered when logic is offended, as it's his replacement for his emotional awareness. He may not be able to consider other's minds, but he said he held respect, he made guides, did things that were helpful. It seems that within some capacity, he cared for others. It doesn't seem there was entirely much attention seeking either, he just had fun playing and posting. Yeah pride was there, but it may have just been a social problem where he doesn't get it. "If I know 2+2=4, and you don't, why are you speaking to me about the next step.." From a purely logical and socially ignorant perspective, that could have been perceived as someone trying to lie or manipulate. Most of it sounds like he wasn't good enough for his perfectionism based in logical analysis, so when others wanted to speed up his times, he took it as if they were saying he wasn't perfect. Which, he previously knew logically, but it was emotionally filtered so that his perfectionism could handle it. Or when they tried to say good job without logical explanation, it's patronization. Maybe that patronization even stokes his own emotions in way he isn't emotionally fitted to manage. Maybe his emotions made no sense, and that's why he had to be logical. But also for the patronization, he saw that they hadn't been nearly as rigorous as him so he found the way to stabilize where his confidence lacks. Not saying he was right, but I don't think he's anything like a villain and I think it's honestly so wrong to characterize an individual we know so little about that way. I think he just didn't react on the same layers.
It's more like: "Hey, I did it half your time." "Not bad" "What? Not an atonishing Wow! or a Teach me?! after all this?, you must be patronizing me. F you" >:(

I think the craziest part is that the world record still has yet to pass the sub-1 hour mark, despite everything discovered and developed since Satvara entered the community with his 1:21:41
The 1:21 set by satvara is only IGT, and the timer within the game is pretty poorly implemented. It does not count paused times, deaths or cutscenes. The times we use on leaderboards today are RTA, the time in real life it took to complete the run. So yeah, nowadays the wr is way ahead of satvaras original run by like an hour or something
11:07 LOL he claims to be this beast of GodOfWar and better than everyone else, but he played on NORMAL MODE hahahahahaha So his time didn't count for nothing. Ricky! I love that you make so many good videos about PS speedrunning, because I think there are so many videos like this for Nintendo or PC, but barely anything for PS. It is heartwarming to see people I have never heard of find insane glitches. And when you covered Ratchet & Clank it felt like the speedrun really mattered. Thank you for the amazing informative videos!
I do have a few theories as to why PS Speedrunning isn't as popular. The first is that Nintendo and PC games have been around for longer and were often the "de facto" games. For example, if you owned a NES at the time and wanted to try speed running, most of your options were Nintendo's own games. This meant the earliest speed runners played Nintendo and PC games which popularised speed running there. Meanwhile, because the PS platform came later, it has to "build its speed running scene from scratch" so to speak. The second is that many Nintendo and PC games often lend themselves more to speed running than PS games. Like, take Super Mario Bros for example. That game doesn't have an elaborate story or combat. Its main appeal is platforming I.e movement. So if a Mario Bros player wants to get more out the game, all they have to focus on is movement which normally amounts to playing the game faster which inspires speedrunning. In contrast, a game like God of War will take longer to inspire Speed runners because there's more stuff for a new player to focus on before they try going faster. Even if they replay it, Perhaps they'll first try mastering the combat or getting more out of the story. This is normally why the most popular speedrunning games tend to be stuff like Doom, Portal, Mario etc. Games which "trim the fat" and focus more on movement which is more likely to encourage speedrunning. Which is not to say God of War speedrunning isn't good. It is. Its just that it doesn't encourage it to casual players
@@FraserSouris That's a good point of view about it. Most PS game (specially nowadays) are focused on telling a story and speedrunning communities seems to like fast games more, which is obvious why.
@@FraserSouris Depends on what you qualify as a "PS" game. Western PS games haven't gotten as much love but the JRPG scene, which is very PS heavy given the size of the game pool in PS1 and PS2 generations especially, is decently popular even though those runs can often be many many hours. Twitch streams of FF games from 7-10 especially always draw some audience, though many of those are lurkers. 7+ years ago I remember watching one of the WR holders (Caracarn) and sometimes it would be many minutes between chat messages.
Whilst admiring Speed Runners for all my gaming over 45 years I'm exceedingly impressed by the out of the box thinking. Impressive indeed. I may just have to fire up my PS2 and and see if my old bones can replicate any of this genius and get the rush Satvara must have gotten at the time. Awesome. An extremely enjoyable video thank-you.
I can't help but think that in 30-40 years, when I retire, that I'll still enjoy documentaries about the early internet and gaming fandom, the golden years.
At first I thought he would be all bark and no bite based on his behavior and attitude, but you gotta love how Satvara was actually able to back up his claims of being a master at the game.
@@TR58699 Because Satvara gives off this sense of this hidden mysterious super-genius who is twenty steps head if everyone, and something about his attitude reminds me of the bombastic larger-than-life personality of Light
It's incredible how many speedrun communities owe almost their entire run to just one or two people who appeared as if from nowhere exclusively to decimate their game
I feel like some people just develop a love for a game independently from a group and just spend time after time perfecting it. Only to realize there is a bigger community out there and dumping all there knowledge once they join. Some people are just very good at dissecting games.

Satvara's exchange with Godmodegod is hilarious. Sounds like something right out of a shonen tourney anime. "You thought you knew of power. Like an ant who moves a grain of sand knows the power of a God who snaps universes between his eyelashes. That is the difference between you and me."

One of my fondest memories of the original God of War is playing troughout the whole game in one day with my brother and a few friends. The fact that there still might be stuff to discover in this game in terms of how to break it is just insane.
Iconic series of games. I remember when GOW came out and I bought it brand new in 2005. Rage quit about midway through (I wasn't very good back then) and then eventually GOW II came out and after beating it I had to go back to the first game. Amazing games. Influenced me and my buddies for years. And then 2018 GOW 4. It's nice to see the things you like really prosper like this. Cheer, my friend!
Tbf games like sm64 which have been out for 20+ years are still finding stuff to shave time off speed runs. So I wouldn’t be surprised if this game hasn’t even hit its peak yet.
The secret is Satvara sees the game world as just polygons instead of all the visual clutter called "graphics" If you don't see the illusion the Devs want you to see, you can more clearly see how to escape the prison.
Bruh this video was randomly suggested to me, but as a god of war fan i clicked and man i am not disappointed. Satvara will now live in glory as the greatest GoW player ever. Youre a legend Satvara!
I really enjoyed this story, especially Satvara’s character. He was arrogant, but also an absolute gaming beast. Please make more awesome speed run videos for us ThaRixer!
I've been watching speedrunning history vids from SummoningSalt and others and I thought that Matt Turk was the #1 speedrunner ahead of his time with his insane Punch-Out! speedruns, but holy fuck this satvara guy contributed YEARS' worth of glitches in just a few months after the God of War speedrunning community started. Imagine how long the community would've taken to even get to his 1:21 record (which would be considered as top 12 or even top 2 depending on which category you put it in btw) had he not taken interest in the game or speedrunning it. What a goddamn legend.
I like a badass introduction like this, a dude coming in KNOWING his info, and CONFIDENT in it, was able to directly erase the existence of the importance of everyone else's runs. All while genuinely pointing out that it was truly impossible for them if they just kept using the current strats they knew at the time. Satvara was right, it was truly impossible for them before he or someone else like him came around. Him being condescending though? Aight man it's a video game, we dont need that much edge. What an interesting dude. Also GodModeGOD STILL never really dropping the minor beef he had with satvara, just kinda makes me think he was mad that a random showed up one day and put everyone's runs to shame and never got over it. I hope that isn't the case though, dude seems like a pretty sound guy.
I think that GodmodeGod actually did great, technically was not trying to disrespect a new member, even though Satvara spawned there saying his run was almost an hour better than the best run of the time, without any kind of proof. He was the "owner" of the forum and that's what makes me think that his reaction was quite right, as for their beef in the conversation prior Satvara first approach, cannot defend the man, was like teenagers arguing, nevertheless, amazing video and I do agree with your opinion about the confidence Satvara had, madlad.

I know right? I mean c’mon! The biggest tell is that he is still pissed at Satvara for being better at the game than he is. He doesn’t respect the single and most influential person to touch the game that he managed a forum for. What a little beach he must be. Satvara also doesn’t seem that bad to be honest. I believe he was able to access level design to see flaws in its production. Then once knowing where he can get away with certain things he just has to discover the how.
It is wild that the list you showed near the end had times that were longer than Satvara's 1:21:41 from 2007 on them just outside the top 10. What a champion
Insane work as always, i was glued to the screen for every second of the video. Its absurd to really see how Satvara literally found more than half of the skips used today in runs but in 2008 with unbelievable OoB movement.

To be fair that guy wasn't near the same jerkness as Satvara and he never held anything against the original piano player he just said he could have played the piece better, his beef was with some random youtube comments that were calling him out to do better.
@@b1nary_f1nary Mediocre ≠ shit. Did you actually look at his comments?

It is a long ass game.
The 1:21 set by satvara is only IGT, and the timer within the game is pretty poorly implemented. It does not count paused times, deaths or cutscenes. it actually baffles me that this guy actually discovered that many glitches that are still being used in insanely optimized runs 10ish years later
Yeah weird. I never noticed how unpopular speedrunning seems for PS. It exists, it just doesn't have a Portal or SM64 big popular game
Awesome.

Satvara found out that pressing start at the very moment kratos blinks in the title screen skip him directly to credits.
No, seriously, what an absolute legend. I'm so happy to learn about this guy.
Fun story. Separately, the screenshots toward the end from your conversation with GodModeGod make him seem like a complete psycho
Imagine someone bruising your ego so hard theyve lived rent free in your head for 15 years lmfao
Literally sounded like a defeated villain from Yu Gi Oh
Satvara being so certain in his own knowledge of what technically counts as "out of bounds" that he didn't even bother submitting the run, is such a 2000's thing to do

he is literally a god level gamer, damn i think even the creators of the game didnt even know there is a glitch like that.
Ofc the creators didn’t know about the glitches
I feel like he's actually a very smart programmer. He studied the programming of the game to know the glitches
@@aakashkedem6372 To being able to study programming, he would need the source code. Unless he is one of the developers of the game, he doesn't have the source code. Your comment really doesn't make sense (no offense).
Additionally, to the original comment: Of course the developers of the game did not know about the glitches. That is why they are called glitches, dude....
Literally?
Actually the creators of the game knows very well about the glitch. Jason McDonald, one of the game creator in God Of War series has done the speedrun. There's a trophy named the Speed of Jason McDonald in God of War 1. He speedrun the game in 3 hours easy
Man you brought me back to the golden age, I miss those days, I was around 13 years old then and did so many chores to get my hand on PS2
The forums were practically my second home, Satvara was a revolutionary legendary man.
The amount of research that went in this video is huge!!! Thanks for bringing this out to us !! I dont even know when the 43 mins passed , totally entertaining video.
I didn't look at the length of the video before watching... Here I am 43mins later wondering how I watched this whole thing without pausing 🤔😬 very well put together and insane story all around

Pausing the video to read all of GodModeGod's responses to ThaRixer's questions certainly paints a very interesting and intense picture of the guy...like, good lord. Satvara at least I could imagine having a normal chat with, even if he comes off at times as overly aggressive and stuck up with his interactions with the others in the GoW community. Meeting GMG would be a whole other experience...
Literallllyyyy. Strikes me as a “woe is me, everyone in the world is stupid and bad, and I’m the only decent one out there and that’s why I have no friends”. I could be way off base but that’s really the picture he paints of himself to me
I know right? I mean c’mon! The biggest tell is that he is still pissed at Satvara for being better at the game than he is. He doesn’t respect the single and most influential person to touch the game that he managed a forum for. What a little beach he must be.
Satvara also doesn’t seem that bad to be honest. Sure he was very arrogant when he was doubted but he had the skill to back it up and that makes it ok in my books to be arrogant.
@@co7769 "he is still pissed at Satvara for being better at the game than he is"
But GMG isn't a speedrunner, he's a challenge runner, and the two categories are completely different. One is about breaking the game and skipping as much stuff as possible (essentially making the game into a goofy platformer), the other is about testing the limits of the combat system and see what you can do with it.
This video in general paints GMG in a bad light but he's a good dude, just likes to troll unsuspecting victims (like ThaRixer himself).
@@co7769 first of all satvara isnt better than GMG at the game GMG is a challenge runner while satvara is a speedrunner GMG is way better also he did nothing wrong there is no beef between the two its just that satvara came off as arrogant which he did
There's no way I could talk to Satvara. Dude's personality sucks.
Yo Ricky, congrats on this marvelous video. You know how much I liked the idea from the moment you told me you'd make this, and it's a true gem. Research was great and I can see your improvements in every other aspect. I really think this video is one of the best ever made about any game, Satvara revolutionized the GoW 1 speedrunning scene in a huge way, and the story deserved to be told. Keep up the good work, my friend!
If it wasn't for you Sanju, i probably would have never played God of War, and this video would have never seen the light of day, so thank you so much :)
It's quite cool going back to Satvara's old Sands of Time videos and seeing that a good amount of the tricks he showcased / discovered are still used these days (coming from a SoT runner). Great video man.
It's so weird how I can feel so connected to someone I've never met. Every time Setvara would disappear, I would feel genuine sadness but then feel genuine excitement when he returned. What a legend. I hope his mom is doing better.
I believe he was able to access level design to see flaws in its production. Then once knowing where he can get away with certain things he just has to discover the how.
