In VGC, shedinja isn't a very good pokemon because it doesn't really do much, while fire and rock types are very consistenly relevant types (also rock slide is busted). However, the moment a restricted format comes up, shedinja's viability skyrockets because it completely counters kyogre, xerneas and zacian, while groudon has to "waste" a fire punch to target it risking a protect. It can become an autowin condition, and while on the firld it can spread burns and deal some damage with poltergeist (spread is always max attack because there isn't a point in anything else, and it has a respectable 90 base stat) and threaten low healt mons with shadow sneak. (Also it has now access to ally switch, but we don't talk about that). Still, it isn't really used much, but it's a constant thorn in the side both in teambuilding, teampreview and during the match. Fun fact, shedinja is the only pokemon in the game for which endure is better than protect, since it's effectively the same since it has one hp, but protect gets broken by urshifu, while endure doesn't. Weathers are very strong in restricted formats, and sun in particular is the strongest, but sun itself can use shedinja to great effect against rain, other venusaurs and regielekis, other restricted legendaries..... The reason why it's still not that good is because there are increasingly more ways to deal with it, and some of the best pokemons in the game can defeat it. The most used items are safety goggles, which also stops powders, and the ever faithful focus sash.
I know Shedinja is probably reponsible for that species clause addition, but I wanna go back to the good ol' days where I could run a full team of six Farfetch'd, starting every battle introducing ourselves as "The Farfetch'd Brigade," and how we're there to kick their teeth in.

It’s funny that wonder guard is one of the best abilities in the game, and is even restricted from being skill swapped, unlike other insanely strong abilities like huge power, but isn’t even the best ability on shedinja and is surpassed by sturdy, a fairly common ability with no restrictions at all.
I used to love coming up with strategies to cancel study shedinja. I mainly use gimmick sets because they're fun. I had a tyrantrum that filled its gimmick role in 3 move slots, so I gave it infestation for shedinja. Nobody saw it coming. Granted, I wasn't exactly a high ladder player...
I used to run a full team of 6 shedinja back in gen 7 hackmons, calling myself the 'shedinja guru'... Had the typical sturdy set, a magic bounce set to catch things like toxic and stealth rock, a prankster set with recycle for focus sash, and 3 others I can't remember... Genuinely the most fun I'd ever had on Showdown and was actually a respectably powerful team
What I hate is that they don't seem to think that if a counter is specific it isn't balanced like yeah make yourself weaker in general so you can counter this one broken thing.
When it wasn't banned I didn't have a problem with sturdy shedinja, my main strat was to use a geomancy simple zygarde-complete to sweep and I always had core enforcer/moongeist beam to hit this
i used to run q funny Prankster Shedinja set that used focus sash + recycle, along with endeavor + accelerock, then either magic coat or spikey shield for the last move slot
Well we can run Stealth Rock (or other hazards) + weather (like hail) to kill shed. If it's hdb then it loses to weather and if it's safety goggles then it loses to hazards
2:33 Wait, Sleep-inducing moves are banned in Balanced Hackmons? 3:13 Why was Double Iron Bash banned? Anyway, neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
So what about using moves such as confuse ray, toxic, will o wisp, or hail/sandstorm? You don't need to prevent use of shedinja with sturdy ability if there are those ways to take him down. The original shedinja also have 5 types that can defeat him in addition to doing such kind of damage.
I played a lot of gen 6 BH back in the day and shedinja was always viewed as a noob strategy. I only needed to use one move slot on one pokemon (moon beam), and that countered shed. I never felt like it should be banned. I honestly don't know enough about gen 8 BH to have a good opinion, but it feels like if it only takes one move to counter an entire mon, it is manageable. idk, can someone help me understand a bit better?
I've encountered Sturdy Shedninja teams but I just click thunder cage(Before getting skill swapped I think) or even have weather do the job(Sandstorm or Hail) You could also poison or burn it
Chansey gets to keep the eviolite boost after it transforms, so if you transform into say, shuckle, you have shuckle's defenses, 250 base hp AND an eviolite boost
Contrary is also banned. Can you imagine putting Contrary on a Pokémon with moves like Superpower, V-Create, Leaf Storm, and Dragon Ascent? Slaking would be an insane choice because of its base stats and normal typing, since you can replace Truant, but Slaking's not in Gen 8 sadly.
Contrary wasnt broken in past formats. Im not up to date rn but something new might have originated to ban the ability. Imposter bliss usually checks most contrary sets, but then you also have spectral thief, prankster hazers and the unawere arceus. Having said that, sone pokemon like primal groudon were banned in part due to the contrary set. Slaking in particular isnt a very good contrary user in general since it cant abuse a good stab or be imposter proof. Most slaking sets used to be shift gear + poison healing + facade iirc. A good contrary user back in the day was mega ray, with dragon ascent, v create, superpower and another move to check shenanigans, like sunsteel strike.
@@hiei49 I was just theorizing. I've never played Hackmons, so I don't know the meta. Tbh, every time I think of some neat interaction I find out it's already been done and is easily countered. Another one I thought would be good with Contrary is Cinderace, since it gets stab on V-Create and has high speed and attack. Does it still get Libero if you replace Blaze with Contrary, or does it lose it? Not sure if hidden abilities are affected by the changes in Hackmons.
@@bretterry8356 You pick an ability and stay with that. Hidden abilities arent relevant. Also, a pokemon may not have a banned ability even if it holds it naturally. Thus, Libero CInderace cant be used, nor can be used contrary Serperior. For Fire type contrary users you could use Ho - Oh i guess if Contrary were allowed, since it gets Stab from V create and Dragon Ascent. Emboar gets stab on Superpower and it could circumvent its low speed with V-Create, but i dunno how it would work with its relative low stats. Reshiram could also be a decent mixed contrary sweeper in gen 7
@@mysticmongrel1289 I know it was good, but i never found it broken, it was just another tool in the meta to break defensive cores. Maybe some overload contrary teams were hard to come by, since they can be improof by being immune to all their moves that could be boosted (sth like Draco Meteor V create Xern), and then they just need to focus down the Prankster user, trap the imposter and power trip the Unawere user. I cannot tell since i wasnt around when the ability got banned.
I’ve been looking for a resource on this Shedinja ban. If mega evolutions come back, I don’t think Shedinja will be banned because of certain Pokémon like M-Tyranitar and M-Gengar. It also needs Arceus, its plates and z-crystals. All this in mind makes Shedinja underwhelming, and I like Shedinja. It may sound ridiculous to use Sand Stream, but Sandstorm is a menace because of the +SpD and the chip damage. If Spectrier-C was still legal, that would stop Shedinja, but on the other hand M-Gengar is just as effective with being a hybrid toxic user or Entrainment Normalize. Last thing, if more things were enabled in Hackmons or brought back in Gen 9 Hackmons, Shedinja would definitely be legal, but running Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist Beam blindly is viable. While running Shedinja blindly isn’t. Shedinja with Safety Goggles is too specific, there are literally No Guard Inferno Hooh and Toxic users going around; I’ve never heard of Protective Pads on Shedinja in BH before because Rough Skin and Rocky Helmet would be unviable in this format (Rocky Helm depends). I’d always run Focus Sash or Heavy Duty Boots on my Shedinja. Also to throw people off, I use Magic Guard Focus Sash, it worked on people and someone got it to work on me.
national dex balanced hackmons has these changes and shedinja is still overpowered. sunsteel strike / moongeist beam / status users are easily scouted by using imposter and magic bounce and weather is easy to play around: just keep the shed in the back until the last turn of sand, then click uturn if they switch to the sand user.

it would be cool to see you cover the shedinja suspect test in gen 7 and tall about the most prominent bh team to feature shed at the time, titled penguin by user cityscapes
Shedinja really breaking the game xD
Also, apparently he can wear da timbs
0:15 What's with the Rex Orange Country names lol? :)
the names of the pokemon on the pokepaste thing he showed at the beginning are names of rex orange county songs
Amazing match I’m going to get into it next week! & post it up on my channel!
i love how there are all these banned pokemon with monsterous stats like shadow rider and crowned zacian and there's just cramorant and shedinja
Nobody ever ran partial trapping moves and it was always a fun way to circumvent so much
The Shedinja was wearing safety goggles, pads and heavy duty boots :O
DUDE, the showcased balance hacked pokemon had Rex Orange County's "Apricot Princess" (2017) song names, that's so based
Thanks for the balanced hackmons video but it’s time for an aaa video
What a coincidence that Freezai makes a video on Shedinja the same day False Swipe Gaming makes a video on Ninjask
One thing I'll never understand is the removal of moves like retribution, which made normal type actually relevant, and pursuit, which came with a great mechanic in prediction reward stuff.
i think Pursuit was removed because gamefreak could not be bothered to get Pursuit working vs Dynamax switches and bug test said interaction.
@@gypsysprite4824 Removing it is a step too far i think they could've just made it so that it wouldn't affect dynamax pokemon, i think low kick was disabled against dynamax.
Likely because it's an irrelevant move in Doubles.
Freezai taking about Shedinja and False Swipe Gaming talking about Ninjask on the same day.
What a coincidence
great vid freezai
Due to that, the only best counters for Shedinja are the users that can have the ability/move that ignores the ability effect.
Sturdy shedinja could be easily fixed if they could increase his hp to 2 hp instead of 1
That's a weird change for the sake of an unplayable meta
I'm pretty sure Shedinja's HP is hard coded to be 1 at all times even though a base HP stat of 1 would otherwise result in a much higher amount at level 100 (for Shedinja, at least). EVs would also work, then.
Why would they do that
They will never do this as hackmons is an unofficial mode.
Imagine if you could have 2 abilities on one pokemon
Magic guard with wonder guard💀
You can with As One but Unnerve doesn't do much
Pokebilities AAA lets you have two abilities, and Wonder Guard is banned
@@redtube8667 Oh , that makes me happy and sad at the same time
It’s funny that wonder guard is one of the best abilities in the game, and is even restricted from being skill swapped, unlike other insanely strong abilities like huge power, but isn’t even the best ability on shedinja and is surpassed by sturdy, a fairly common ability with no restrictions at all.
Can you have level 1 pokemon in hackmons?
Wondering about lvl1 sturdy swinub
You parents left you.
Here's why
(its clefable)
Indubitably.
Sturdy Shedinja is a great example that just because there are counters to something, doesn't mean it isn't broken and unhealthy for the meta game.
Whenever Blunder says to ban something to triple Ubers in his vids, this is what he means
Missed opportunity to put "Sturdynja" in the title.
My fave part of gen three is that, for a generation or three, wynaut and Shedinja we're constantly headlining for being Uber tier pokemon
Can you talk about the Nintendo Cup and how they had a tier list? That seems fun.
Laughs in mold breaker.*
2:33 Wait, Sleep-inducing moves are banned in Balanced Hackmons?
3:13 Why was Double Iron Bash banned?
Anyway, neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
double iron bash could be run on something fast like zamazenta to force flinches and is generally considered uncompetitive
I knew Heavy-duty Boots would come into play somehow.
4:24 so my initial thought was correct, Heavy Duty boots made it too strong.
So what about using moves such as confuse ray, toxic, will o wisp, or hail/sandstorm? You don't need to prevent use of shedinja with sturdy ability if there are those ways to take him down. The original shedinja also have 5 types that can defeat him in addition to doing such kind of damage.
I used to top the Gen 4 Hackmons (not Balanced) with a Level 1 Wonder Guard Sableye with Endeavour and Dragon Rage.
Those were fun times!
I'd have a Mean Look, Baton Pass Bulky Giratina that would switch in to Sableye.
It also carried Gastro Acid for anything that also had Wonder Guard.
"last straw on the camels back"😄😄😄
I've encountered Sturdy Shedninja teams but I just click thunder cage(Before getting skill swapped I think) or even have weather do the job(Sandstorm or Hail)
You could also poison or burn it
This video covers the limitations of status and weather as counterplay options.
shedninja wasn't banned back when I played, though that was before heavy-duty boots
"Heavy Duty Boots"
IT HAS NO FEET!!!
I'm sorry, I filtered out most of the video after seeing the Regigigas nicknamed "Si veo a tu mama" - "If I see your mom".
So basically the situation that made Shedinja banworthy was also one that was created by other bans, and a meta that pretty much demanded it.
“Si veo a tu mamá” LMAO
Impostor shedinja with Life orb and double-edge was so good they had to ban It
Genesis of Sin is actually a hilarious name for Xerneus
that's funny, you released a video on shedinja at the almost exactly same time (like ~10min diff) that false swipe released a video on ninjask
*Any gimmick metagame/main series mechanic exists*
WHY CANT YOU JUST BE NORMAL
Shedinja: *screams*
Heavy duty boots strikes again
photon geyser, sunsteel strike, and moongeist all hit through unaware
In pure hack mobs I just get a deoxys speed to give me all the stat boost in the game and baton pass it to a mold breaker Pokémon
The Shed ban hurt as much as the Prankster ban tbh. Shit's why I don't bother with BH anymore
Except prankster isn't banned
i just find distracting how everyone in the 2:06 clip is named after bad bunny songs lmfao
2:12 they could have just put it in the little space where u chat not literally send a chat
If Shedinja wasn't banned everyone would just be running Sturdy Heavy duty boot Shedinja.
Prankster whimsicott with leech seed + magic bounce for Ditto
Prankster Magic Bounce 🤔
>FSG uploads a Ninjask video
>Freezai uploads a Shedinja video
Coincidence? I think NOT!
Why is Chansey used over Blissey in Balanced Hackmons? I’m curious
why is chansey above blissey? does eviolite work through impostor?
Yes
Why is it imposter chansey instead of blissey? Isn't the health all that matters?
@@hiei49
Gen 7 Balanced Hackmons had massive Contrary use everywhere. It ended up banned
I cannot tell since i wasnt around when the ability got banned.
bruh that’s me in the thumbnail 💀
I dont know what you mean by pure hackmons is unplayable... deoxys speed setup using shell smash into mold breaker mega gyarados with beat up
It would be interesting to know why Double Iron Bash was banned as well
Probably because high power + breaks sturdy/sub/sash and also the 51% chance to flinch
Also usefull for countering other broken stuff
couldn’t Shedinja use Nature’s Madness for that extra 1HP on rounding?
Wait why is Gorging Cramorant Banned?
Guessing here before seeing the video.
Sturdy-boots?
Pretty sure defensive pokemon like Toxapex kill Shedinja readily. You can always use baneful bunker and other similar moves
mold breaker?
Just use the ability mummy
Why was Cramorant banned??
omg imposter chansey LMAO
Almost like Gamefreak dosent considering singles even though that's probably the most popular format due to the entire story practicly being singles.
Bro this is literally a meta for which you need to hack
This is also a fanmade meta
Why is DIB banned?
really strong and 50% chance to flinch, its only balanced in regular play because only Melmetal gets it and its too slow to flinch anything
@@FreezaiPokemon oh, makes sense.
... Imagine that with serene grace lmao xD

Congrats ur first
@@layschips134 no not me I’m not tea, just saying tea was in the video, should’ve clarified that and worded it better
