Maynard said in a acoustic session explaining this song “I had a friend who had some chemical problems. i ended up meeting his brother and his brother was so out of touch with what he was going through....so this song is kinda sung through the perspective of the brother who doesn't understand what his loved one is going through and in a way has no compassion for what he is going through...this song is called the outsider because that brother is standing on the outside of a understanding and doesn't get it. this song is from the perspective of someone who is ignorant and doesn't have the time or patience to understand what their loved one is going through." Very VERY good call on analysis.
Sounds thematically similar to "Blue" then as well. "I didn't want to know. Just didn't want to know. Best to keep things in the shallow end, 'cause I never quite learned how to swim.."

"Give this to ME! MINE! MINE! MINE!" "The Package" is a beastly song in every way. Maynard's vocal range, the bass, the guitar...just everything. You're 100% correct addikt.
The final lyrics have always hit me the hardest. "If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, do it somewhere far away from here" where it seems like he is basically walking away from the situation and that person out of sheer frustration with their mindset.
Its crazy cuz Maynard wrote the song from the perspective of someone who doesnt understand the levity of the depression that one of their friends is going thru. So I agree the lyric is awesome, but he wrote it from the perspective of someone who is being an asshole. I love this song lol

this entire album is amazing. The album deals with addiction, with perspectives from the addict, the loved ones, and the drugs themselves, and the trauma that causes addiction. It is so beautiful.
You are so spot on. There’s also a really cool (or sad) way to view the album entirely from the perspective of the user who is projecting what they think everyone else thinks of them, which causes them to burn bridges and sinks them further into the hole of addiction. Idk if you can interpret Pet that way though haha.
Jeordie White (a.k.a. Twiggy Ramirez) was on the bass guitar in these years of A Perfect Circle. When George mentioned the sound of grungy 90's....he wasn't wrong. The dark tone that Jeordie has is what made early Marilyn Manson years so distinct. Instrumentally speaking.
My brother dealt with addiction, depression and suicidal urges for a long time and we always tried to help him through it. A couple months ago he killed himself. My entire life he was my best friend and I am so angry he chose to leave us the way he did. So yeah, this song hits really deep now listening to it. Because I know for the rest of my life I'll never fully understand why he did it, and that it will never stop hurting.
I love how y'all are loving it so much you back it up to the beginning over and over!! This song is well worth backing it up to the very beginning!! I'm here for every second of it!
I love this song. Probably my favorite track off a near perfect album. Please do some more APC reactions in the near future. You've barely scratched the surface of what this band can do.
One of the finest bands I ever saw. 2004 in Manchester at the Apollo. The live version of ‘The Nurse Who Loved Me’ was unreal. Gents, it rarely gets better than this.
Jeordie White was also the bassist for Marilyn Manson on "The Beautiful People" (under the pseudonym Twiggy Ramirez). This was also his first album with a perfect circle. Between Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step, Jeordie replaced Paz Lenchantin on bass and James Iha (of the Smashing Pumpkins) replaced Troy Van Leeuwen on second guitar.
"this is that perfect balance".... so.... like.. a perfect circle? lol - this is by far the greatest and funniest reaction to APC I have ever seen!! The way you just kept restarting it and appreciating it all - just fantastic. You have a new sub from me, and I can't wait to delve into your back catalog of content.
Perfect Circle are amazing. It's a wonder that Maynard fronts Tool, Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Three totally different but amazing bands. Appreciate you guys doing this and this album is amazing. Would love to hear more from this album. Some more Pearl Jam too fellas. Happy New Year!
This is personally one of my favorite songs period. Keep up the good work guys. I've been watching your channel for about 5 years now and I appreciate the dedication to the music. Your reactions are very fulfilling just cause it's like introducing a song to a friend and they vibe it like you do. Everytime you guys deliver, and with very thorough and thoughtful introspection. Again, keep up the good work, you guys are cool af in my book.
I'm a massive death metal fan, but this song is a go to in the gym, especially towards the end when Maynard gets louder and louder. When he screams "Do it somewhere FAR AWAY FROM HERE" that works better than any steroid ever could.
Also, the live version of this from Echo and Stone is incredible. Some other favorites from APC are Orestes (Echo and Stone version of this song is also unbelievable), So Long and Thanks For All the Fish, The Hollow, and Pet.
If Matthew and juggalo weren't writing loud enough, I would really encourage you to take a gander at that rendition of "Orestes" from the Stone and Echoe show. Remember his mother, Judith, was paralyzed for nearly 30 years. Paralysis is not a stagnant condition. Spending decades with your entire body atrophying causes a dynamic, not just musculo-skeletal but a degeneration of the internal organs as well. A slow and quite painful degradation which his mother probably didn't complain about but was plain to her son. Orestes is the myth of a son who kills his mother to avenge his father. While that's is not the motivation that comes into play for Maynard, certainly a contemplation of euthanasia must have crossed his mind and I interpret this song as reinforcement of that theory. How many people are living in pain because their families struggle saying goodbye? The first time I heard the live version of this song from Stone and Echoe I thought, "This might very well be the most beautiful music I've ever heard!"
One of my favorite albums, great song. Love Gravity! Y'all are right that it's from Maynard's perspective of "the outside looking in", also drugs specifically addiction. This whole album is about addiction, the different stages/process of addiction, even the 12 step program, hence 12 songs & album title 13th Step (also about the 12 steps). In this song Maynard sings about being an outsider to someone who's addicted, Maynard has never been addicted so he doesn't understand why someone would do this to themselves. He does this by expressing his frustration & anger. In interviews, he's mentioned his late friend Layne Staley from Alice in Chains. Discussing Maynard drawing inspiration from Layne's addiction & ultimately his death. Also your point about the song helping people, Maynard has said those things "I do want to help people who are on that borderline, who might hear a song and go, "You know what, I think I want to try to live."" Really the whole album is great!! Love when you guys get this excited about a song!
I always liked this song but never took the time to analyze the lyrics. That’s what I love about this channel. You guys sometimes change my mind about songs that I’ve heard a hundred times before, whether it’s in a good or bad way. Great song and great reaction!
Judith has the best bassline on that album imo. Paz was a much better bassist for this band, once again imo Brena is great though and its bassline is awesome. Magdelena has a really good bassline too. And 'Thinking of You'
Let’s goooo been waiting forever for this one! Orestes or The Package live at Red Rocks gotta be on the list too. The Outsider is a banger but those two songs really display the band’s talents
As a musician who grew up loving this song, it’s so nice to hear you guys appreciating all the nuances and technical details that so often get overlooked! You guys are demonstrating really good active critical listening, don’t see enough of it these days! So refreshing! Not just saying it’s awesome, but articulately explaining WHAT you like about it and WHY!
My favorite APC song by far, especially that last bit where everything gets super heavy. But the lyrics really put this song over the top - where it seems like Maynard is critiquing depression, he's actually calling out people who misunderstand depression and Maynard is critiquing that stance, the stance of the outsider. Here's the quote from Maynard: The lyrics to "The Outsider" at face value, are in judgment of a potentially self-destructive or suicidal individual, though Maynard clarified that the song's message was meant to be a criticism of people who do not understand the struggles of people dealing with depression, saying: "[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off." Y'all should check out Goliath by Karnivool or their newest one, All It Takes.
As man from west Texas who loves tool and APC as well as the old school country and all good quality music in between, I absolutely love all your reviews and your down to earth opinions. I can see how y’all have also grown in your explanations as to the composition of the music. Keep up the good work guys!
Maynard as a writer for me, is up there with the best lyricists to have ever done it! So much variation with different topics, and to top it all off he is an amazing singer!
I greatly appreciate you all going over this song. I've listened to rock with my dad since I was a baby and he introduced me to this album, namely this song, in 2004....and it blew me away. I had heard Weak and Powerless on the radio and loved it but like you all, I slept on it until I heard this song and this whole album. And I always had an affinity for Tool and once I connected the dots, I was listening non-stop. Bless you guys.
The Outsider isn't the person being sung about, the person isolating themselves. Its the narrator passing judgment without the slightest clue how they'd feel in that person's shoes. Treating a loved one like they're garbage when they need you the most. That's straight from Maynard on the aMOTION DVD.
@@puppetmaster8551 its such a powerful album. Maybe Maynard's best in terms of a complete concept being realized. Each song is so spot on and powerful in its own way. By the time I get to "Gravity", I'm shaky and teary-eyed.
@@dpounder101 absolutely. And it works even better because you can 100% believe that Maynard would write a song from said Outsider's perspective. The same way he wrote Swamp Song or even Hooker With A Penis

i could tell that you were feeling it immediately and it looked like each of you was waiting for the other to be the first to stop it so soon 😂 love it 🖤
Probably sacrilege to a lot of fans but I honestly prefer A Perfect Circle to Tool these days. Orestes, The Noose, Feathers... so many incredible tracks.
Orestes is my favorite Maynard track, that is a fact. As for APC vs Tool, Tool came first, and when I first heard them it was an awakening for me to a new form of musical/lyrical expression, and TOOL has more of a catalog to choose from. But I love all three of his bands, I want all the Maynard I can get.
A Perfect Circle and Tool are a lot alike but has its subtle differences that makea you enjoy both bands in different ways. They have such great music.
This entire album is fire! Maynard is a genius. This video was dope, can't hit the Subscribe button hard enough! Looking forward to seeing more of these.
APC's "The Thirteenth Step" album is about the 12 steps of Addiction Recovery (i work in addiction recovery and personally 14 yrs sober myself so this album has a lot of meaning to me). Each song corresponds to one of the twelve steps of recovery with a "bonus" final step. While people have many different objects of addiction, the behavioral patterns are always similar, to the point that learning about the programs can be beneficial even to sober, healthy people. A "bullet" is drug slang for a cocaine vial, you've probably seen them in movies, the type that people wear disguised as a necklace or w/e to go get a quick bump in the bathroom - though the "Russian Roulette" double entendre is likely intended as well. I'll leave it to others to get into more specifics because learning about this stuff is half the fun of this type of high art. On an unrelated note: When are you going to react to Legend of the Seagullmen? (Danny Carey and Brett from Mastodon's band)
One of my favorites by them is "By and Down." Maynard's vibrato in his opening vocals is hypnotizing. Not as aggressive as this, but still an excellent performance. Probably one of APC's most radio-friendly songs. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just gives you an idea of the ballpark the song is in.
I'll never be able to listen to this song again, without thinking about your guys reaction to the bass! Love the vids and love watching you guys react to rock/metal!
I just discovered you guys this evening. And I wanna thank you for digging into the good stuff I've not heard for YEEEEARS!! Like A Perfect Circle..."The Outsider"! Maynard said in a acoustic session explaining this song “I had a friend who had some chemical problems. i ended up meeting his brother and his brother was so out of touch with what he was going through....so this song is kinda sung through the perspective of the brother who doesn't understand what his loved one is going through and in a way has no compassion for what he is going through...this song is called the outsider because that brother is standing on the outside of a understanding and doesn't get it. this song is from the perspective of someone who is ignorant and doesn't have the time or patience to understand what their loved one is going through." Jeordie White (a.k.a.
I had this cd in my car for 2 years straight in high school. An all-time great album for me personally. Listen to the package.
From this same album “Weak and powerless” is just amazing. Definitely recommend it, I personally like it better than Judith
💯
“We were snoring on A Perfect Circle!” Classic as always gents
Probably the greatest guitar break I've ever heard. It's been on my playlist for 19 years
I love how y'all are loving it so much you back it up to the beginning over and over!! This song is well worth backing it up to the very beginning!! I'm here for every second of it!
I love this song. Probably my favorite track off a near perfect album. Please do some more APC reactions in the near future. You've barely scratched the surface of what this band can do.
I have been watching this reaction every day for the last week. You guys are both so expressive. Such great feeling from you guys.
Breña is a beautiful song ! Maynard is just perfect in this album !
Breña is insanely beautiful
My favourite from them.
Omg sooo beautiful!
Brena is on Mer De Norms but yes, very beautiful song! :)
One of the finest bands I ever saw. 2004 in Manchester at the Apollo. The live version of ‘The Nurse Who Loved Me’ was unreal. Gents, it rarely gets better than this.
Drove 10.5hrs from coastal VA to Nashville to see them live
This is my favorite album from them. Every song is great. I’m particularly fond of Weak and Powerless.
Agreed. Comes with an appropriately freaky video clip.
Hahaha great reaction / review as always! I love when you get all worked up about when something is really great sounding!
Josh Freese was also the drummer for Nine Inch Nails
@@flingonber Oh, iu know. Very versatile
@@jhamilton1007 *a
Freese has also done session drumming for Avril Lavigne, Lostprophets, Hollywood Undead, Paramore, Weezer, the dude is an absolute machine.
You guys are officially back in business
One of my top 10 albums of all time. Every song is just so good. And listening from start to finish is a fucking journey.
Have you tried all the steroids?
PRAISE MOTHER KOS
FACTS
@@austinm8242 haha
Explains why one Tool song is named Parabol. Naming it Parabolan was too straight
Speaking the same language : beautiful. Love your reaction videos because you get so caught up in the power of music.
Also, the live version of this from Echo and Stone is incredible. Some other favorites from APC are Orestes (Echo and Stone version of this song is also unbelievable), So Long and Thanks For All the Fish, The Hollow, and Pet.
good pics for sure
Oh my god yes, Orestes from E&S is AMAZING
How many
people are living in pain because their families struggle saying goodbye?
The first time I heard the live version of this song from Stone and Echoe I thought, "This might very well be the most beautiful music I've ever heard!"
Stone & Echo is one of the best live performances I've ever seen/heard. Those people at that show had a religious experience that night. Amazing show
The whole album is just a masterpiece.
I’ve listened to this song 64,000 times, and it seems to get better each time. Love seeing y’all hearing it for the first time.
Also your point about the song helping people, Maynard has said those things "I do want to help people who are on that borderline, who might hear a song and go, "You know what, I think I want to try to live.""
Really the whole album is great!! Love when you guys get this excited about a song!
I love your enthusiasm for music. It's very rare for a bass line to get the appreciation you gave the opening riff.
I always liked this song but never took the time to analyze the lyrics. That’s what I love about this channel. You guys sometimes change my mind about songs that I’ve heard a hundred times before, whether it’s in a good or bad way. Great song and great reaction!
"Brena" from Mer De Noms has to be my favorite bass line of all time. So powerful right from the beginning of the song.
Judith has the best bassline on that album imo. Paz was a much better bassist for this band, once again imo
Brena is great though and its bassline is awesome.
Magdelena has a really good bassline too.
And 'Thinking of You'
Agree. Paz was a badass
Bro you couldn't of picked a better song. I slept on brena for years bro. Didn't even listen to it
I love watching the stank face you both get when the music is good. You all are awesome. Try Puscifer The Humbling River and The Remedy!
They did The Remedy
Yeah I love these guys. They're the only reaction channel besides Geebz that have a great personality.
They already did Remedy
Potions, momma said, the mission, rev 22:20, The arsonist.
I love how even after 3 playbacks you still react so brilliantly. Been loving these vids. 🖤
Let’s goooo been waiting forever for this one! Orestes or The Package live at Red Rocks gotta be on the list too. The Outsider is a banger but those two songs really display the band’s talents
That whole album is a masterpiece. Mer de Noms is good but this is so damn fine you should have a licence to listen to it!
Killer tune, great pick fellas!
One of the best reactions I’ve ever seen. The energy and analysis you two show is unmatched. Well done.
My favorite APC song by far, especially that last bit where everything gets super heavy. But the lyrics really put this song over the top - where it seems like Maynard is critiquing depression, he's actually calling out people who misunderstand depression and Maynard is critiquing that stance, the stance of the outsider.
Here's the quote from Maynard: The lyrics to "The Outsider" at face value, are in judgment of a potentially self-destructive or suicidal individual, though Maynard clarified that the song's message was meant to be a criticism of people who do not understand the struggles of people dealing with depression, saying: "[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."
Y'all should check out Goliath by Karnivool or their newest one, All It Takes.
That's straight from Maynard on the aMOTION DVD.
i think a lot of poeple really dont get this aspect of this song but its why i love it so muh
Yup, partially inspired by Layne Staley and other people Maynard knew with addiction problems etc. great concept album.
15:52……..the musical pause as a musician myself gets me every single time. It’s the sort of moment that is a joy to play live if a band is in the groove together
This song is excellent. Give “Blue” a listen form the same album.
Blue is so good
Oh yeah. The vocal harmonies on that chorus!
Yeah, excellent choice there. Seeing it live was incredible as well.
Oh yes, I totally agree, Blue is such a beautiful piece, just impossible to ignore.
I love blue. It’s got the feels
I love this reaction! I’ve been into A perfect circle for years but to hear you guys react to it is the bomb, I watched it twice! Awesome job guys. Peace out. 😎
You finally got back to them, been requesting this one for a while. I would suggest "Passive" next, or maybe "Pet" or if you want something a little different try "3 Libras", all great songs!
I love the beginning of Passive but it loses its way in the second half.
Such an awesome song-so cool to hear fresh ears appreciating it! That bass riff at the beginning that grabbed you guys so much is actually a bass AND a low tuned guitar, so props to the guitar players too!
3:57 i'm pretty sure the answer to "why" is called "the minor 9th". that's the note you're reacting to here, and also something i think i remember having seen especially ryan react to in other songs. i've been looking for an example of that for the last 30 minutes now, but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack:D
i could tell that you were feeling it immediately and it looked like each of you was waiting for the other to be the first to stop it so soon 😂 love it 🖤
That first 10 seconds is so recognizable, and the wailing guitar in the background just fits perfectly.
You guys nailed it. Best reaction I’ve seen and it all felt real. Thanks guys
Probably sacrilege to a lot of fans but I honestly prefer A Perfect Circle to Tool these days. Orestes, The Noose, Feathers... so many incredible tracks.
I empathize, brother...I love TOOL, but APC is ethereal to me on countless levels. Maynard is a genius, period.
Sorry but Danny Cary just brings Tool to a whole other level
I’ve always loved APC but could never get into tool. Couldn’t ever understand why APC didn’t blow up like tool did they were so incredible
"The Package" will definitely blow your minds. So original.
U know tool well, love Maynard! The other one of 3 masterpieces from this genius! Thank you! We love you guys!
One of the best reaction videos to tool I've seen Great work!
Awesome breakdown guys. You're spot on with the lyrics too. In fact this entire album is looking at different aspects of addiction.
I'll never be able to listen to this song again, without thinking about your guys reaction to the bass! Love the vids and love watching you guys react to rock/metal!
Absolutely love this reaction and this song and band.
I just discovered you guys this evening. And I wanna thank you for digging into the good stuff I've not heard for YEEEEARS!!
Like A Perfect Circle..."The Outsider"!
I saw them live, a couple of times in/near Seattle, with my adult kids.
I watched you for like 3 hours tonight, and really enjoyed you and yer reviews. I wl return.
this whole album is an epic gem, please do an APC marithon. Try their songs gravity, the package, the rose, orestus, imagine, when the levy breaks, magdelina.
