It did happen to me straight up.
I had never gotten into Tool. Had listened to all their albums at least once back 2 or 3 years ago, but it was a "it's cool, but doens't quite do it for me" kind of reaction. Strange given that it's a style of music I really enjoy in general.
About a month and a half ago I was in the gym, didn't feel like listening to anything in particular and thought "let's do some Tool". Played the first album. And sure enough, it was a combo of me having to do nothing else other than paying attention to the music and that it sounded damn good in those headphones, but they went right fucking into my brain.
Since then I've been on a Tool rampage listening to them like 75% of the time I'm listening to music (which is many hours of the day). And I've both listened to and grabbed my guitar to play Pneuma don't even wanna know how many times.
In a matter of a day Tool jumped into my top favourite bands. I'ts quite insane how great their music can sound once they do click.

macgonzo I agree with you that’s what this song is about it’s a heartbreaking and beautiful song. But one of the things that I find amazing about it is that it applies to so many other things too. I’m only 24 but this song really hits me because I find it to be the story of anyone who feels like they’re falling out with the world around them. Like they no longer have a place because how they’ve spent their life is no longer how the world works and they’re being forced to either adapt or fall away. That’s how I feel on a daily basis. The more the world changes the less connected I feel to it and society and I find myself always trying to figure out how the life I’ve lived for the short time I’ve lived it can be fit into it now.

Re: 9:00 Truth. A Tool fan wants to share/introduce someone to the band - "Let me have 13 minutes of your undivided, fully engaged attention. No, you can't talk, you just have to listen." Many people don't have the attention span to engage with the music on that time scale. This tune brought me to tears the first time I rode it. The sense of loss I felt at the first faux ending at about 7 mins was unbelievably deep, and the elation that followed as it continued without a pause was equally high. The second faux ending with the measure of silence, again, felt like a friend had died, when they kicked back in for the last 2 minutes I was legit screaming "YEAH!!!!! IT'S NOT OVER!!!!" while driving alone down the highway. So filling.

Tool are masters at dynamics and polyrhythms. It doesnt sound like a jumbled up mess because they understand musically where to land on the "ONE" after separate parts and time signatures. Being a musician and percussionist in bands...that is EXTREMELY difficult to do. It is so easy to get lost. These guys have mastered it. They hardly ever hang out in 4/4. Love it. No words.🤘

What I really like is how Tool’s songs hold up amongst the musicality and their sound. 1 thing I love is that Maynard’s lyrics are so poignant and relevant going back to the days of Opiate all the way through. I first watched this review the day you released it and I keep coming back to it as your review of it is a bit like Tool’s music. It’s stands up to the test of time too. The song is more about coping with age than the success of their music careers. The fear of getting old and the acceptance of it as you acknowledge your past accomplishments and coming to grips with the fact that you’re older and past the prime “warrior” days. False hope perhaps but the truth never got in my way until now (accepting getting old, seeing the truth) feel the sting feeling time bearing down (age is undeniable). It’s not a flex. It’s an acceptance of mortality.

This song is like building a layer cake. Build the base, then stack and stack and just when you think they're done they pick the whole damn thing up and shove it down your throat.
This song is also unbelievable live. Adds a whole other level that the studio version can't touch.

@@leafsfan1728 Absolutely agree! Three of TOOL's all time best.
To me Pneuma is musical edging while Descending is like an experimental track to see how far you can descend a song into madness. I absolutely love them both.

I had the same ride in terms of Pneuma vs invincible! Now I don’t know which is best…Invincible sure does take it to another level, especially when you see the live version. Adam and Justin turn and play towards Danny during this middle party, about as cool of a thing I’ve ever seen in music. Don’t forget Danny was 58 on this album. Monster!!
