    This is so interesting--PETA remote staff member here, I love putting on your videos while I work so I can learn something new in the background! I remember a LOT of articles popping up about Tattooed Chef being a good "vegan stock" to buy in 2021 or so.

      Yes the people who were promoting it were REALLY pushing it! I barely remember hearing about it, which I’m grateful for now. Thanks for watching and I’m so glad my videos keep you entertained while you work! 🤗

      For the record, I'm vegan and just like supporting publicly traded plant-based companies

      @TotallyForkable I wish they stuck to frozen, vegan pizzas. From what I saw online, everyone was loving that product specifically
      They had their hands in too many pots

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  5 місяців тому +2

      💯. Many of their products were hit-or-miss but the pizzas seemed universally beloved. I have seen so many businesses falter after trying to do too much instead of sticking to what they excel at, so I totally agree with your point. I feel like I have learned so much about what NOT to do from witnessing these public struggles.

    So many of these companies are run by people with inadequate business savvy or a murky mission statement (otherwise known as principles). I have looked askance at so many smaller brands because my gut said, _these won't stick around, don't get used to them._ TC's delliberate misuse of the term "plant-based" when no other brand did made me suspicious. Shades of Coconut Bliss (or whatever the hell it's called now). It's a damn shame. Thanks to you, and that redditor, for all your hard work to assess this company's history and downfall. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours : )

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes Tattooed Chef’s clear lack of principles was one of their biggest downfalls-and no trendy branding or Killer Bee Pizza (😢) could make up for it. Hopefully their fall from grace on such a public stage can be a lesson to other companies. We’re more than willing to embrace plant based products but don’t piss us off with this wishy-washy BS.

    Thank you SO MUCH for this video and the research you did. It helps provide me a bit more closure having loved their products and having lost 5 figures on their stock. I bought their products weekly and was really sold into the brand as a vegetarian turned vegan. Such a hard pill to swallow, appreciate this video though!

    PLANTED VENTURES
    LLC deliberately acquired the Tattooed Chef brand and we are now relaunching it into the market. But appears still Sarah is now the owner. Sure father is still owner with daughter as the face of the product.

      Wow, that’s an interesting thought! The only vegan pizza I remember seeing in recent years is the “vegan meat lover’s” one, and I haven’t seen it in a while but to be fair I haven’t been seeking it out.

    Great video! Not to make excuses for TC, but it looks like those plant based stamps were encircled with “beef” and “sausage” to indicate a mock meat, probably not intended to indicate the whole product was plant based. I agree it is very misleading, and it does show they were focused on a flexitarian customer who is open to trying mock meat but not committed to eating plant based. I really wish there was standardized labeling. I’m looking forward to your favorites video and will try to join your live video.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  4 місяці тому +1

      Yep I noticed that too. If you look closely enough it's pretty clear, but something about having the "PLANT BASED" text be huge and centered and the other text be tiny and on the border feels almost intentionally misleading. At the very least it seems like they really wanted to cash in on the buzz-marketing that "plant-based" would afford. I hope your holidays have been great, Eva, and it would be so fun to have you there on the live!! 💖

    I'm a little worried about Rebel Cheese going down too now that they have investors in the mix. Lots of investors see plant based this way.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  4 місяці тому +2

      Funnily enough, I had never heard of Rebel Cheese until recently. We ordered a fromage/charcuterie board from Riverdel in NYC for Christmas. The cheeses they gave us were from Rebel Cheese which led to me looking them up. They were really good! I didn't realize they were a big enough operation to have investors; fingers crossed there are measures in place to protect the founders and the product!

    That's just what capitalism does...
    Companies tend to be created and run with the goal of capitalising on some gap in the market, and many try to create some personified brand. The ones with founders who truly care about said "gap" or who actually have some person behind a personified brand are rare (and even those can get swept up by capitalism due to greed, pushy investors or survival necessity).
    When you mentioned the labeling controversy, that told me pretty much everything I needed to know about the company. Heck, I could've figured that out when you said they went bankrupt after going public, or when you said they're a company that exists.
    It's nice to have dedicated vegan companies, but having existing large non-vegan companies start to sell vegan products is probably the safer bet (in terms of trustable products and staying power), given that they have established production and distribution pipelines, and a long history of successfully rolling out new products.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  2 місяці тому

      Spot-on analysis! 🎯 The only thing is that the people behind Tattooed Chef did have a ton of experience with packaged/frozen foods and distribution, which was one of the most confounding parts of their failure.

    I miss them because I’m diabetic and a lot of their food was perfect for that. I’m also vegetarian but love vegan when I can find it.
    I always read the labels. “Plant based” is not enough to let me know what’s in it.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  2 місяці тому

    I always thought plant-based to not be 100% just plants. it's the base of a meal or diet but not limited to only that

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  3 місяці тому +1

      See this is why we have a problem. There's not a clear 100% understanding. I would say most people and businesses interpret plant-based to mean "zero animal products," but not everyone does.

    Good video, I was curious cause the tattoo Chef stuff showed up at my local Go-Grocery a month ago. Just the logo itself was off putting, it reminded me of so many lefty commie hipsters. Also they were all vegan and I hate fake meat and fake cheese. I profoundly refuse to eat the bugs.

      @@TotallyForkable The Go Grocery Chain is a closeout / overstock food store. Anytime a food brand goes to die, Go Grocery will buy up the cheap surplus.
      On a different note the Acai Fruit bowls are in fact Excellent. I bought 12 boxes for $2 dollars a box.

      I haven't tried Blackbird pizzas but have heard people rave about them! It seems Tattooed Chef got greedy too quickly and should have just stuck with a few key items that were selling well! The pepperoni pizza was such a treat; wish I stocked up when I had the chance 💔

    • @LightsHikesAndWanderlove
      @LightsHikesAndWanderlove 2 місяці тому

      @TotallyForkable I definitely wish I had stocked up too! I had no idea they were going under and I actually refrained from buying it for a while because of inflation. It was pretty expensive and they only sold it at this one grocery store that is kind of out of my way. I regret that so much! By the time I went back to look for it, it was gone!

    • @TotallyForkable

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  3 місяці тому

      Yes, but most people interpret "plant-based" to mean zero animal products, so when they were putting "plant-based" in large letters on the package of a product that had eggs or dairy, that's where the frustration came from.

    • @Travisb238

      Whole food plant based (WFPB) absolutely means a diet consisting of ONLY non-animal ingredients. It also excludes all the highly processed "vegan" foods. WFPB is vegan but with REAL whole food. Hope this helps clear things up.

      I enjoyed most of their products I tried, but admittedly it was only a few (the pizza and I believe a breakfast bowl). I heard people say some of their products were awful but the general consensus seemed to be people really liked them!
