Product Managers can come from everywhere, inventors, designers, engineers and my favorite entrepreneurs. I went from business development and acted as a product manager to get more sales in a manufacturing company, I learnt engineering and become VP of innovation of our group. Then president and make $400K a year at 34. Just focus on the needs and deep very very deep into why you're making the solution and then focus on your unique positioning.
@@aluisious you’re making the biggest stretch you can huh. Depends on what type of product you’re making, I’m in electronics so my team is engineering heavy. Product architects, mechanical, electrical, firmware and user journey. We run reviews at each gate for feasibility and guess what buddy, we have a factory and we do all the technical feasibility and design transfers for production. Maybe you should stop assuming and ask questions. I did electrical engineering at college, went into sales and now run an innovation company. You on the other hand sound miserable and I bet you’re unemployed.
@@iqraaaliya1230 that doesn’t matter. Creativity can come from anywhere, like all ideas. I’ve hired products from engineering backgrounds, industrial design and marketing. We also have some researchers PHD’s who create ideas. If your idea is good, then don’t wait to make it.

Hi Chloe! I love how you gave us the reality but you were also comforting, reassuring and hopeful throughout 😢 Your energy is infectious ✨ I’m glad you’re on the internet 🤩🤩🤩
As someone who's so happy that my PM made a firm decision and supported my recommendations in a meeting this morning (working in product support/ops) this video is so timely! This was a great explanation! :)
I've been a PM for almost 2 years now, had no idea what I was getting into. This video has helped me understand that the world doesn't hate me; it hates my job. Thanks
hey Chloe, just want to you know that u are just a life savior. I was a management consultant who recently transitioned into a Tech Product manager with a large Brand. i looked upon your videos while interviewing this firm. even though i am from Hong Kong your knowledge from Silicon Valley is still applicable here. also, i am in love with your infectious smile so much that I introduced you to my Mom and she approved! Hope we can meet soon
I would love a video on how you and your engineering team breakdown the work and what collaborating with them looks like. I love seeing how other orgs to product management
Hm I’ll have to think about how to best explain this. It’s very collaborative for sure. This might have to be a collab video with an engineering manager or tech lead!
This is very accurate and precisely why I left product management :) It's a ruthless, highly political job, with very little upside. I'm glad Chloe was so honest: most PMs do the job only for the pay and the "prestige." They're out to prove something. But it's mostly souless work, and makes you question your life priorities. I am so much happier now that I left PM.
You are very intelligent and express yourself very well. You acknowledge how tough it is but have a humor about it. I know this is social media and everything looks perfect in this video so I shouldn’t envy that but I’m sitting here thinking I wish I can get a grip on my emotions and move forward happy and confident in my life as you appear in your video. On the outside, I look like I am succeeding which I am moving up, but on the inside, I need to work on my emotional IQ. How are you so level headed? I admire that in the way you appear to carry yourself
haha love the way how you explain this whole story, feels sooo easy to digest and do make the audience wanting to finish watching the vid till the end 📈
Oh god, this is so relatable. Envying the software engineer's role. The manager telling you "eating shit" is your job. Swallowing your pride. Glued to your desk. Meetings. Understaffed so now someone elses job is also your job. MONEY but STRESS. Im a PM in Australia and waiting for your video on how to get out of this job 😂
omg yeah we just gotta swallow our pride and deal with it. lmao at the getting out of the job! i mean i think it's possible to make it more balanced. it's just always a balancing act. i think this job suits my personality a lot (at least for now).

I wish I wish, I'd have watched this video an year ago. I transitioned from being a Jr Data Scientist to APM, and I can 100% relate to the non glamorous and thankless part of the job. Nevertheless, giving myself the time to learn and trying to create an impact :)
ah well i didn't post until this week, so you're all good haha! but yes it's def such a non glamorous role. so much BS you have to put up with that no one appreciates or notices :( i hope you're doing well in your role right now!!
I wanna be a product manager as it resembles more or less a film director's role (except that there won't be any support kinda thing is provided after launch) which is an unfulfilled dream of my life for some obvious reasons. Currently working as a low code developer in a product firm, i wanna switch it to any role which doesn't involve a lot of numbers like ds,ml,dl or scary tech(springboot,FE,cloud, devops, etc.,) But... 1) i never ever have been a leader/organiser of any group in my life. 2) i'm someone who can't yell or hurt others even if they seem like not cooperating. 3) i'm someone who just talks whats going on in mind. 4)i fear tech will make me alone if i pursue.(i'm already alone and wanna new circle) So i guess, PM gives that social relief of meeting many people in calls. 5)i can understand a thing thoroughly with a gradual learning curve and i don't wanna compromise on quality/correctness. 6)I'm in india. 7)i'm not a good communicator like you.(like in this video, totally sharp,on point and funny) Question : Am i fit for PM/APM? (Long comment, hope you find it and answer me🥲)
Ahh Chloe I love this video! I remember your previous iteration, and you've come so far (the flow + story telling, explanation, etc!!)! Also I love how that you brought over the slice of life over to longform :))

As a Mom of 2 young kids and a PM at a startup, I can say you hit the nail on the head with this explanation. The role is very overwhelming at times, and feels even more overwhelming as a working mom. If only I knew how to write code, life could possibly be much simpler...lol.
Do u really think that coding looks easier than PM? If that was the case, why do we have 1000s of youtube channels just for cracking coding interviews? Why we don’t have the same for PM roles ?
we actually do have the same for PM roles. PM interviews are gruelling and very challenging. there’s thousands of these videos, and even entire books on how to crack the interview. take a quick search and find out for yourself.
@@MohanRaj-vp1zt Yes coding is easier than Product Management. As a developer I’ve shipped multiple products over 25 years for various companies including Microsoft. I served in an architectural role on the Azure product team participating in the launch of v1 of the platform in 2009. Today I’m a Principal Technical Product Manager at AWS. Where are the 1000’s of videos for Product Management? Dispersed among the thousands of videos for business strategy, systems design, statistical analysis, value proposition design, research techniques, UX design and usability, time management, productivity hacks, economics, graphic design, psychology and more. Often times I write code on the weekends to give my brain a break so it can focus on one logical thing. It’s like taking my brain for a walk or doing a crossword puzzle.

If it wasn’t for my husband having so much flexibility to do all the care taking and parenting there’s no way in heck I’d be in this role without crying daily. I’m always re-evaluating if I want to change functions to have a better work/life balance.
consumer is definitely incredibly competitive and not chill x_x but it is super fulfilling and fun to know that your friends and family use your products!! sometimes i think to myself that i should just go to B2B to live a more chill life o_o
Yo, legit, i have never felt more seen 😂 I get so much judgement with people asking me "what do you actually do at your job?" Instant subscribe. You're awesome.
I'm a UX Designer and I'm speaking from experience when I say a PM makes or breaks a designer's experience at a company. I've had many positive, collaborative, pragmatic, and empowering Product Managers over the years. I've also had just as many stubborn, lazy, condescending and myopic PMs that were horrible to work with. Good PMs recognize designers as partners and make sure that design is included in the discovery, planning, testing, and implementation phases of the development process. Bad PMs treat designers as Figma minions, shutting them out of the decision making and just dumping requirements on them to mock up.
Translate brd into user stories. Story grooming. Assist with QA and UAT. Work with other teams on dependencies. Break project into phases. Stay up late to work with APAC. Get up early to meet with AMER.
She doesn’t have to specify this, but for people excited about the pay, those sign-on, bonuses and equity are from the big league players in tech. If you’re going out for a role with a start up or even establish corporate brand then those numbers look very different.
Working as PM in Europe is totally different than it's in USA. Here everything is quite structured and more chill at work. Most of the time you are not directly working with the dev team, as there is Engineering manager or Tech Pm or some other people who is doing this job.
Meanwhile I have a bachelor of science and I’m about to be fired from my wage slave job because I didn’t line my bosses’ pockets well enough while I have barely 2 months worth of savings and hardly break even with my expenses vs income each month. Some people just win at life.
I've been a PM for around 12 years and have heard increasing rumours of big companies replacing us with AI. Any thoughts on this, and have you heard any similar sentiments? It's got me a little worried...
If you open a company, buy a warehouse and then full it with large shelving and some cool fork lifts and buy some trucks and get some nice finance agreements you may buy your own products at your own prices and stock them in your own warehouse, however there are cost obligations and profit obligations however you have to write off the costs through another company and find the balance and then you have to advertise and resell your products etc. However the bank financial tools need to work correctly.
I know a current Bay Area Product Manager with "yes" to all the above.. His past work experiences included SWE, data engineer, data scientist, sales engineer, and engineering manager.
Tech PM mom of a toddler. The struggle is real! I'm always under significant stress and pressure to deliver results under tight deadlines. The added stress of caring for a young baby under sleep deprivation has lead to burnout and depression... 😭
We tend to use the Epics and Stories as the source of truth vs the PRD. Then we build out a PRD skeleton in our wiki by linking the tickets. Helps a lot with the time sink of maintaining the PRD and helps the PM from getting too into solutioning.
gotcha - we go from the PRD to the project task management tool - whether that's jira or asana. we also link to the tickets, but the process has varied tremendously by team so i don't have anything standard to say haha
Amazing video, energy, content, openness, involvement, acting, positive mood, sincerity, informative. Only someone who really loves what they do can present this. Thanks!
Hello, Chloe. Thanks for creating this video and providing some much clariity/insight into the PM role. I wanted to ask - what is the difference between a Product Owner role and a Product Manager?
I could be wrong but it sounds like what Advertising calls a Project Manager or Producer with the exception of being "client side" and focusing on one app/product (rather than several projects with several different clients). Sounds cushy from that perspective but I'm sure there are challenges that Ad people don't have.

For my parent coworkers, the fact that you have children forces you to ruthlessly prioritize far better than the ones without kids haha. I’m hopeful that it’ll work out well!!
As a new PM myself, I find your educational content really helpful. It has helped me navigate and understand the PM role. Thanks Chloe for all this information. I am really grateful to you! Love from India
Aww wow from India!! I’m glad this has been helpful! It seems like the PM role is very popular in India too!
What if someone doesn't understand engineering? Or is from creative background?
@@iqraaaliya1230 that doesn’t matter. Creativity can come from anywhere, like all ideas. I’ve hired products from engineering backgrounds, industrial design and marketing. We also have some researchers PHD’s who create ideas. If your idea is good, then don’t wait to make it.
I’m not remotely interested in becoming a PM but wanted to understand what they do (since I work with them) and this was the perfect video! 🎉❤ Loved this Chlo!
You have such an likable personality!! I could listen to you speak all day
Satire, right?..
of course you say that, looking at your pic you are asian as well. Probably as unfunny and annoying as her. You two fit well together
I haven't had any fun lately, You bring me joy!I love the kind and generous heartwarming atmosphere that you create, your kind, easygoing, warm vibe. I like the essence how you live on. I need to be true to myself and find a job I am passionate about. I want to find a way to live as who I really am.
I’m a PM six months in - everything you said is pretty spot on especially writing and money …. Sigh yeah LOL. Amazing video!
Could you share how to become PM?. I want to change careers and interested to start diving in.
Great explainer. Like a friend talking to you at a pub about what it’s really like. 8 years experience and there’s not a thing I’d disagree with.
My favorite thing to do is to
catch up with friends over drinks and fruits!! Vibe successfully captured!
And oh boy I was hoping things would chill out at some point 😬😬
Agreed!!
wow the EDITING in this video 😩 i love it ~~
THANKS SARAH!! :D I tried to keep it clean and minimalist ~~ didn't want too much going on!!
Hi Chloe! I love how you gave us the reality but you were also comforting, reassuring and hopeful throughout 😢 Your energy is infectious ✨ I’m glad you’re on the internet 🤩🤩🤩
aww thank you!! comments like these help me keep going ~ making videos on top of doing a full time job is super challenging!!
As someone who's so happy that my PM made a firm decision and supported my recommendations in a meeting this morning (working in product support/ops) this video is so timely! This was a great explanation! :)
Awww yasss!! There’s definitely a LOT that goes into every decision. It sounds like you and your PM have a great working relationship!
I've been a PM for almost 2 years now, had no idea what I was getting into. This video has helped me understand that the world doesn't hate me; it hates my job. Thanks
this was SO well delivered, shot, edited - killin it chloe!! love hearing things from another PM's perspective 🤭
aww thank you!! means a lot that this has the blessing of another PM
hey Chloe, just want to you know that u are just a life savior.
Being a product manager for over 2 years, I can relate with all the pain behind that gorgeous smile of yours! Your summary is spot on!
I would love a video on how you and your engineering team breakdown the work and what collaborating with them looks like. I love seeing how other orgs to product management
Hm I’ll have to think about how to best explain this. It’s very collaborative for sure. This might have to be a collab video with an engineering manager or tech lead!
Perhaps by reviewing backlog items and prioritization 🎉
This is very accurate and precisely why I left product management :) It's a ruthless, highly political job, with very little upside. I'm glad Chloe was so honest: most PMs do the job only for the pay and the "prestige." They're out to prove something. But it's mostly souless work, and makes you question your life priorities. I am so much happier now that I left PM.
What career to go into after PM?
I am curious what job did you change too?
You are very intelligent and express yourself very well. You acknowledge how tough it is but have a humor about it. I know this is social media and everything looks perfect in this video so I shouldn’t envy that but I’m sitting here thinking I wish I can get a grip on my emotions and move forward happy and confident in my life as you appear in your video. On the outside, I look like I am succeeding which I am moving up, but on the inside, I need to work on my emotional IQ. How are you so level headed? I admire that in the way you appear to carry yourself
haha love the way how you explain this whole story, feels sooo easy to digest and do make the audience wanting to finish watching the vid till the end 📈
aww thank you haila!! i'm really glad you like it! i'm slowly starting to find my storytellng voice through youtube~~
Hi Chloe! Can you do a video on how you stay organized as a product manager? I struggle to keep track of all the things I need to do, so it would be nice to see how you keep track of everything.
haha o god i am not an organized person, but i can try! i gotta think about this!
@@chloeshih I'm also not an organized person, but my job is requires me to be🙃For someone who struggles to stay organized, it would great if you could share your tips and tricks!
Such a fun style to make the video! Love it, Chloe !
thank you nancy!
You will be able to do it after you have kids, you will need a village and flexibility but it is doable, you need to learn to ask for help and probably have a nanny instead of daycare but it is doable. This is coming from a marketing manager who has been there 🤗 and I have kids with special needs. I know you would absolutely do it and do it wonderfully!
Aw thank u so much! I def think it’s gonna take a village. So comforting to hear this from you!! ❤
absolutely loved this video. I'm literally a fan right now . Aspiring to be a PM Professional, and it's nice to have you guys to learn and take inspiration from
Love love love this!!!! My husband is following you cause he moved into the IT field. And I just love your personality, so I’m joining you on your road to 100k!! Let’s get it!!!!!
haha yasss road to 100k!!! IG is getting there closely, but ofc UA-cam may take longer.
Also glad you and your husband are here haha!! love the duo viewing ~
Thanks Chloe! Now that I finally become a Product Owner myself, i relate 101% to countless meetings, countless alignments, countless syncs and countless catchups T_T
xDDD 101% is the correct amount haha
I wish I wish, I'd have watched this video an year ago. I transitioned from being a Jr Data Scientist to APM, and I can 100% relate to the non glamorous and thankless part of the job. Nevertheless, giving myself the time to learn and trying to create an impact :)
ah well i didn't post until this week, so you're all good haha!
but yes it's def such a non glamorous role. so much BS you have to put up with that no one appreciates or notices :(
i hope you're doing well in your role right now!!
hello, may i message you about the role?
wow, this is one of the most engaging videos ive seen on a tech-ish topic in a long while, beautifully explained Chloe
I wanna be a product manager as it resembles more or less a film director's role (except that there won't be any support kinda thing is provided after launch) which is an unfulfilled dream of my life for some obvious reasons. Currently working as a low code developer in a product firm, i wanna switch it to any role which doesn't involve a lot of numbers like ds,ml,dl or scary tech(springboot,FE,cloud, devops, etc.,)
But...
7)i'm not a good communicator like you.(like in this video, totally sharp,on point and funny)
Question : Am i fit for PM/APM?
(Long comment, hope you find it and answer me🥲)
Ahh Chloe I love this video! I remember your previous iteration, and you've come so far (the flow + story telling, explanation, etc!!)! Also I love how that you brought over the slice of life over to longform :))
omg yeah! that first video was SOO different from how i shoot my videos now. thank you for sticking around from the beginning, hillsidess!!! always love seeing your comments!!
Hahahaha. A PM here. I can relate to all you just said. All true. Thanks for sharing these and creatively informing us about the PM life - its chronicles and successes. LOL 😆
Keep sharing your brightness and talent to the world. You inspire us and makes us happy! Thank you, Chloe! 😊😊😊
All the way from the Philippines here 🇵🇭
Omg Philippines!! That’s dope!! Glad you found this video very relatable :) glad I got the right experience down!
O... M.... Gee! Chloe, this was brilliantly described and I really really appreciate it! I am a designer and Senior art director with 15 years of experience and I have been trying to find how I'm going to grow and looking at things like ux UI and trying to figure out what field to go into. This is a massive help in letting me understand areas I can target to grow/secure/resting my value as a modern professional creative. Wish I could high five and hug ya cuz this was the down to earth, coffee convo I needed to help with easing my mind and helping focus. Thank you dearly Chloe!!!
Chloe this was the most hilarious yet informative video, I have come across on Product Management thus far. The Chaos really does get to you, glad you have such an positive outlook to it though.
Thanks for talking me out of this career path (I'm currently a UX designer) :D
lmaoooo well UX designers don't have it easy either, but i do think in another world i would have chosen that path instead!
@@chloeshih True! But it's a grind I'm already accustomed to lol. It sounds like you do an awesome job as PM. Keep up the great work and thanks for the educational video!
This was genuinely so good and well put together, wow!
Mom of a teen and toddler, PM at a big corporation for Consumer experience. Which if anyone knows, Consumer is the HARDEST area. Everyone wants in on it.
Wake up kids, new Chloe just dropped!
Omggg!! 😂😂 love this energy
This video was brilliant, a lot of effort went into it and you can tell. Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience.
Aw thank you! Haha I rarely do dedicated PM videos these days so wanted to make sure this one was done well!
Yo, legit, i have never felt more seen 😂 I get so much judgement with people asking me "what do you actually do at your job?" Instant subscribe. You're awesome.
aw thank you!! also, i hope you're doing ok haha
I just got an internship in product management and this video has been so helpful and made me really exited to experience it first hand!
Love your story telling stylo, energy and insights!
I’m an SE and work closely with PMs, but I didn’t fully understand their day-to-day work until I watched this. Nice one!
180k salary but since she lives in silicon valley, 180k salry is eqilavent to 130k in new york or 110k in Chicago or Atlanta
Translate brd into user stories. Story grooming. Assist with QA and UAT. Work with other teams on dependencies. Break project into phases. Stay up late to work with APAC. Get up early to meet with AMER.
PM = all the pain, and all the gain. Well said!
T_T but the pain tho
She doesn’t have to specify this, but for people excited about the pay, those sign-on, bonuses and equity are from the big league players in tech. If you’re going out for a role with a start up or even establish corporate brand then those numbers look very different.
this is VERY true!! 💯💯
how diff? what would you say is a normal salary for a pm in that situation?
I love her personality. So much character and sass, haha. No wonder she excels at her job.
Working as PM in Europe is totally different than it's in USA. Here everything is quite structured and more chill at work. Most of the time you are not directly working with the dev team, as there is Engineering manager or Tech Pm or some other people who is doing this job.
This video was really good! I love the structure, the flow, and the info 🙏🏾❤️
I’m glad you enjoyed!! I think my storytelling has improved a lot since my videos from last year haha
“I’ll tell you if we hit 100k on this channel” how are you not at 1 mil yet?? Let’s make this happen 🎉
💕💕 haha aw thank you! The product manager world is just very very small! Lots of people have never heard of the role before!
this is the realest product manager summary video out there
Girl you are just so good. Amen to you.
thank u friend
lovin it. great having such a fast-thinker (and speaker;) with still so much valid content in it :)
The accuracy of this video though 🔥🔥
hehe thank you breezy
Meanwhile I have a bachelor of science and I’m about to be fired from my wage slave job because I didn’t line my bosses’ pockets well enough while I have barely 2 months worth of savings and hardly break even with my expenses vs income each month. Some people just win at life.
I've been a PM for around 12 years and have heard increasing rumours of big companies replacing us with AI. Any thoughts on this, and have you heard any similar sentiments? It's got me a little worried...
Project Manager here (the other kind of PM), we have a lot of overlap in responsibilities with Product Managers.
Do u code ?
PM: No
Do u market the software?
PM: No
Do u do maintenance work for the software
PM: No
Do u manage engineers working on a product
PM: No
I know a current Bay Area Product Manager with "yes" to all the above.. His past work experiences included SWE, data engineer, data scientist, sales engineer, and engineering manager.
@ yes, those kind of people will definitely shine in the product manager roles, because they have been hands-on with real code.
Tech PM mom of a toddler. The struggle is real! I'm always under significant stress and pressure to deliver results under tight deadlines. The added stress of caring for a young baby under sleep deprivation has lead to burnout and depression... 😭
😭😭😭 nooo why it gotta be this hard
"You don't know until you try, but you don't want to try too hard until you know enough." BARS 🔥
PETEEEEEE :D :D :D :D
Thanks!
At the time I am watching this video, you hit your goal and double. Congrats, very good personality and content stuff 🚀
This is so good! As a PM, I approve this!! 💯🙌
haha thank you!!
From a PM to PM, you're a start regardless.
It’s 12million actually….love your content…I should subscribe 👌🏾
I can’t believe it took me a month to watch this video. It’s too good😭🖤
Shes pretty, she knows how to talk, uses body language to communicate. Has great tonality.
And shes probably Filipino.....and i dig Filipinos...
She deserves her job and her youtube revenue
You are true PM, eat whenever it is possible. I always have my lunch on my meetings because there is no enough time for that
I felt this, great explanation. The struggles are real but we still out here.
Hey, I just subscribed to your channel! You are now my PM-sister online ❤ hope to learn more from you while I also plan to begin my own YT channel to help local PMs in my country ❤
Chloe, thank you! :) You described everything I love and hate (mostly the same things) about being a PM. I am a PM on a dev team of 3.5 people, and I'm dying under the weight of UAT testing on top of all documentation, meetings, marketing assets, project management, etc. Have you also been responsible for testing, and do you have any recommendations? I would also love to hear from anyone else in the comments.
Chloe, I want to tell you something:
1. I really enjoy your videos! The way you explain concepts is hilarious.
2. I just realized that I’m colorblind. I swear I thought I saw a yellow watermelon!
3. New subscriber here!"
hi carlos!! aww thank you so much. im so glad you enjoy my video!
also you are not blind. that is definitely a yellow watermelon lol!
welcome to the channel ~ i haven't been a little MIA, but i just posted a couple days ago!! hope you've been well!
Thank you for this video! I too am also planning to go down the route of product/program manager. I also was curious about your background and saw that you studied Industrial Engineering which is what I studied. We have a lot in common! Same major, same city, bought a home in 2023! Haha Looking forward to your future videos!
interviewing for a job soon and this helped clarified alot for me! Thank you!
I came across your video and really got my attention. I’m a newbie Product Manager and I am learning stuff day by day. So glad to finally validate the unli to-do list 😂 Thank you Chlo. New subscriber here 🙋🏻♀️
Such a nice video from an engineer who want to build some empathy for PMs in my company.
Love this video Chloe - thank you! Fellow PMs how do you get the balance right with delivery and discovery work? And which meetings / sessions do you have to go through problems/priorities with the team? There’s so much going on in my brain that I really hope someone can make sense of my questions 😂😅
Very, very helpful video. Thank you. So glad this was suggested to me! ❤
seeing just her talk is fun to watch 😂
Just stumbled on this - Excellent! I can relate on so many levels. Thanks for putting this together.
So glad you enjoyed the video!!
With tech layoffs becoming increasingly common, is tech still a stable industry to get into? What are some alternatives for a career switch?
Hi, fellow oldest sibling 2nd(ish)-gen immigrant PM reporting in! Keeping my cool while my mom lectured me about how I had to work harder at school or else I was going to ruin my future prepared me for keeping my cool while all the projects I'm responsible for are on fire and customers are asking very tough questions. 🤷
When most people shit on PMs, they are generally talking about PROJECT and PROGRAM managers (100% valid).
PRODUCT managers are the GOAT.
