Rangers make excellent player characters, particularly the gloom stalker, which adds 'disguise' at level 3, so you can pretend to be a Drow, etc, which helps with the goblins in Act 1. I tend to choose 'Urban Tracker' as it gives you the ability to open locks and disarm traps which means you can do without Astarion at times. Being able to speak with animals, persuade and buff companions with extra movement are all helpful. By level 5, you have 3 attacks at the start of combat and 2 in subsequent rounds. I tend to go down the dexterity route, which means you are almost the first to move in every combat. 8 levels of ranger and 4 of rogue gets you all 3 available feats too.
I am currently running as Druid/Beastmaster hybrid for all 4 characters. 4 Spiders with 4 summoned Spiders. We are "The Eight 8-Legged Freaks" (group name still pending approval)

@shinzoux5912 which makes it easier to overcome the deficit. GWM needs at least 2 buffs to fully overcome a -5. This reduces it to about 1 for sharp shooter. Then when you aren't using sharp shooter it puts you ahead on accuracy. Allowing you to better prioritize other buffs.

It sadly isn't. It uses the game's size chart, and the creatures have to be Large or larger on that chart. It would be very cool if it worked that way, though.
I fall asleep and woke up watching this video 😂 so is gloom / assasin the onl viable combination or does lv 12 ranger work fairly well? Speaking of higher difficulties as well.
Wow that sounds like a nightmare. Probably woke up in a cold sweat, wondering wtf that horrible noise was. 🤣 Gloomstalker/Assassin is very popular because it can actually solo the game with the right items and playstyle. But you can definitely run a pure Ranger through any difficulty, it just won't have the little bit of extra on the opener. If you aren't planning on soloing Honour Mode, every class and subclass in the game is viable. If you are planning on soloing Honour Mode, probably don't.
@@PanicRolling so far i only played on balanced. That feels a bit too easy now so ias i took a longer break from bg3 i m looking at traction. Is honor mode fixed or is it still quite dangerous ^^?
Builds I played - level 11 ranged hunter is enough by itself, add 1 war cleric or 3rd feat as you see fit. Hordebreaker (4) works well with Wildheart barb tiger (8) is an aoe melee character. With Druid 7 Circle Land you get what I think is the best caster, while upping WIS and working on CC (plus double attack :) My fav was going light cleric 7 with gloomstalker 5, mainly CC'ing with a bow and the fire hat acuity (don't remember name). I had phalar + shield + spirit guardians when CC wasn't beneficial. Barely got touched, and you can easily replace either subclass (cleric - tempest is #2 and war is #3 for me here)
@@orshefer1467 you do miss on the upper end of ranger/druid abilities though...those two classes can go pure no issue and will be viable. Warlock pacts get stronger as you go so dual class a warlock is kind of wierd too unless you go sorc or bard but then you lose on alot of the pactupgrades so whatever class you pick better make up for it. Some classes mixes well though clerics ( especially war ones ) can easily pick up fighter as they are armoured anyway and war cleric with battlemaster fighter tools is a nightmare to deal with as a supporter. Rogue work for some situations and you can techically mix up wizard and bard without losing much and gain new tools. It all depends on if the tools you gain is worth the loss and in the case of ranger/druid I don't think they do. cleric of the storm variety could techically mix with druid skills tooallthough I do see mainly storm cleric with some in ranger just for the early stuff being viable but I wouldn't go gloomstalker for that..I rather use hunter for it.
OK just want to toss my 2 cents in on the "True Strike" thing. I actually made fairly decent use of true strike on a recent game for Act 1 and most of Act 2, that being said I never cast it, it was that dumbass spear you can buy in the grove I think. I had Shadowheart using it, I mean she was still missing sometimes with true strike active but it definitely helped heh.
Great guide man, you never fail to deliver. Rangers are my least played class in the game, from my testing they lag behind all the other martial classes(Gloomstalker excluded). But still very much viable even in Honour mode. I love my lore friendly Hunter/Berserker Minsc build.
It makes a big difference. Also make sure your weapons are not emitting light. The ones that do this have a toggle that you can turn off, to shed some shade on the situation.
It still is, but be aware that they've changed Darkness a bit since the video went live. It will likely cause you to enter combat if the Raven places one of the clouds on top of an NPC. Definitely always test stuff like that before trying it on Honour Mode!
(Paraphrased) "Hitting is good, it's not that you will be pumping out crits. It's just that you will be hitting more." Uh? Isn't that the single most important thing and best point, actually hitting the target? You can't crit what you don't hit. Is there actual parsing that conclusively proves there is something better than hitting what you are aiming to hit? Tongue-in-cheek there, but the point is valid.
Ranger and Rouge are both dexterity type characters, means if you want to make really good assassin you can put these classes together. By the time you reach level 6 you will be Rouge assassin Ranger gloomstalker.
you would still lose alot of the ranger tools for that kind of thing. Some classes are just better of not multiclassing and druids amd rangers are among those as their toolkit get kind of absurd as they go up in levels. Warlock pact being another one that is stronger the purer you go. wizard/sorcerer/rogue and depending how much you need of it clerics can benefit from multiclassing though. A cleric of war that dualclass into a fighter especially battlemaster gets ALOT of tools to support a party
Colo really hates True Strike... When he trash talks a spell or ability, he usually just says that someone will explain how they used in some situation and it turned everything around... but his time he's just like "no,no they are wrong, True Strike it is joke"
I’m kind of new to DnD style combat. Can you do a bg3 for idiots about why magic is strong please? Magic seems weaker than martial because spell slots are so limited and a spell isn’t guaranteed to hit. Except magic missile, but still.
Spells are sometimes guaranteed to hit, but have a saving throw (DEX mostly) to halve it. When your attack roll (affected by your CASTING ability) you can create even higher to-hit chance, and some of those damagers like Chromatic Orb just deal their damage, and can cirt as well. All in all, unless you have a huge amount of damage riders, spells will do more than weapons starting around level 7-8, especially sorcerers. Then there are the AoE options which are much more available to casters than militia/ranged.
Once a caster hits level five, they get access to third level spells; huge power boost. They get access to spells that requires enemies to make saves as opposed to rolling to see if you hit. These spells control the flow of battle (haste, slow, counterspell, stunning cloud, hypnotic pattern, hunger of Hadar), remove targets from danger or combat (banishment, polymorph, resilient sphere, misty step, dimension door), and deal damage or debuffs over a wide area (fireball, lightning bolt, ice storm, cone of cold, cloudkill) and more. You need to be tactical, imaginative, or both to fully utilize spelly wellies.
These replies pretty much summed it up. In the very early game, casters can feel very weak. Especially when you're new. I was brand new to DnD combat also when I started bg3, so I get it 100%. My first character was a Sorc and I was like "wtf this is so weak...how do I play this?" Until 5th lvl, you're gunna have to be careful with positioning and using defensive skills. At 5th lvl, you'll get the big upgrade everyone has mentioned, and you'll start to really see magic shine. The amount of answers you can have for various different situations as a caster is ridiculous. Especially Wizards. They are a walking magical Swiss Army Knife.
Giant killer can be great!!!! Indeed it could be best. Because for race like halfling or gnome , most of the enemies are bigger than you. You can deal more damage often.
That's not how it works, unfortunately. It doesn't compare your Ranger’s size to the enemy's size at all. It compares the enemy's size to the game's size chart, and if that enemy is in the Large category, or one of the categories that's even larger than Large...then the effect works. In the video I actually underplayed how bad this skill is. I think it is literal trash and should never be chosen.
I always understood the "large or bigger" category to pertain to gnomes ,halfling etc as in : to them a humanoid would trigger it , otherwise if they mean the literal size class that would be weak . For archers i just feel gloomstalker is the most fun because it also gives utility but a rogue does everything you do better ,and since hide is a bonus option you can sneak attack every round where the gloomstalker has a big dick round at the beginning ,and is then just a semi caster with a bow and a close range gloomstalker is a worse stealth monk who at higher levels teleports to rnemies , ranger companions are good , but dont fit through certain doors and terrain ,really annoying and the druid can do the same ...better ...i really like ranger but maybe for a companion not yours
Yeh it would be cool to have access to a lot of the late game upgrades earlier. I've seen people asking for NG+, which I think would solve that issue if we end up getting it. Larian hasn't mentioned anything about it afaik, so fingers crossed. There are currently mods that allow this, if you play on PC.
There was a beast master show? No! That isn't Dar! Dammit. Anyway. Love that the most social of land animals can't summon others, nice... But the most solo can lol. And helmets look stupid.

I mean the warlock got me interested into your channel. The Power Ranger joke just made me sub.
Lol welcome to the circus!
@@PanicRolling Have you ever played the Divinity series? It's similar well depending on which game you get. Not exactly 1 for 1 going by D&D rules but the core is still there. I'm a sucker for the old ones like Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity. But Original Sin and OS 2 play very similar to BG. Tho the older one play similar to the OG BG
I've played DOS2 a few times! I loved that game.
You are funny, and your voice is so soothing. Great video!
Do u know if giant killer is affected by being one of the small races? Like dwarfs or gnomes
It sadly isn't. It uses the game's size chart, and the creatures have to be Large or larger on that chart.
It would be very cool if it worked that way, though.
Using ur video to impove my english. Nice style of talking u have there
I'm probably not the person you should copy if you want to learn to speak English lol! I'm glad the video was able to help you, though!
Gloomstalker/Assassin is very popular because it can actually solo the game with the right items and playstyle.
Builds I played -
level 11 ranged hunter is enough by itself, add 1 war cleric or 3rd feat as you see fit.
Hordebreaker (4) works well with Wildheart barb tiger (8) is an aoe melee character.
With Druid 7 Circle Land you get what I think is the best caster, while upping WIS and working on CC (plus double attack :)
My fav was going light cleric 7 with gloomstalker 5, mainly CC'ing with a bow and the fire hat acuity (don't remember name).
Heh. I like this guy. I listen at work. Videos are long and he makes me laugh.
It might be possible to use gaint slayer more often if you use enlarge on a humaniod enemy.
Wouldn't work on gnome or halfling or goblins however.
37:22 I felt personally attacked by this
Gotta love those references I’m following for sure
OK just want to toss my 2 cents in on the "True Strike" thing. I actually made fairly decent use of true strike on a recent game for Act 1 and most of Act 2, that being said I never cast it, it was that dumbass spear you can buy in the grove I think. I had Shadowheart using it, I mean she was still missing sometimes with true strike active but it definitely helped heh.
If there were more "passive" ways to use it, or if it cost a Bonus Action...it would be great.
Trying to hard cast True Strike though? 🤮
Great guide man, you never fail to deliver.
Rangers are my least played class in the game, from my testing they lag behind all the other martial classes(Gloomstalker excluded). But still very much viable even in Honour mode. I love my lore friendly Hunter/Berserker Minsc build.
Love these videos! Great channel too!
Tyvm!
I am embarrassed to admit that I never thought to turn out lights for extra darkness coverage the last time I played gloomstalker.
It makes a big difference. Also make sure your weapons are not emitting light. The ones that do this have a toggle that you can turn off, to shed some shade on the situation.
33:48 bruh this is so fucked up, straight up murders a civilian just to he can mark two enemies standing nearby lol
Ehh you know what they say...you gotta crack a few civilians to make an omelette du fromage.
Something like that.
currently trying to work out a a barbarian ranger druid that summons animals, turns into one, and rages to buff the hoard
Beastmaster looks like a lot of cheese and hella good cheese tho... That Dire Raven looks OP AF
It still is, but be aware that they've changed Darkness a bit since the video went live. It will likely cause you to enter combat if the Raven places one of the clouds on top of an NPC.
Definitely always test stuff like that before trying it on Honour Mode!
Another excellent guide, really usefull
Can I summon both bears then short rest before I leave camp?
(Paraphrased) "Hitting is good, it's not that you will be pumping out crits. It's just that you will be hitting more." Uh? Isn't that the single most important thing and best point, actually hitting the target? You can't crit what you don't hit. Is there actual parsing that conclusively proves there is something better than hitting what you are aiming to hit? Tongue-in-cheek there, but the point is valid.
Loved the video, great style, funny, and in depth. Cant wait to see what else you got. Like & sub
7:59 early 2000s toonami flashbacks. 🤣😭
Heyyy, someone caught it! A+ to you
Yo if i use withers, can i respec to the same exact class?
Yes, absolutely. You can basically change every single thing about your build, or respec to change a single spell choice. Costs the same, either way.
@@PanicRolling ok and i can pickpocket back the gold with no consequences right
I am so mad that the wolf dosent get to summon another wolf but the bear does
He's more of a...
Lone wolf. Fml I'm so sorry.
Yeh there's no redeeming that one. Unless they made it a Bonus Action. Then it would instantly be usable.
True strike is good in only 1 use. To give yourself sneak attack with your offhand attack.
Now do one for the world saving teenagers in coordinated jumpsuits, thanks in advance
Lmfao my next video is just a Power Rangers retrospective...
(This is not happening. Would be hilarious though.)
LETS GOOOO WE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
WOOOOO
col't you just throw a bottle of colosses on all your're enemy's ? i mean yes it'S a stupid idea but that would make every enemy a LARGE :D
My own ranger is a level 8 rock gnome hunter that looks like Daniel Craig. & I’m doing a shit Jacksepticeye impression for the voice.
🤣
Look at fireball, big aoe fire damage, you can only dodge half of the damage. Hit multiple enemies with that and enjoy
These replies pretty much summed it up. In the very early game, casters can feel very weak. Especially when you're new.
I was brand new to DnD combat also when I started bg3, so I get it 100%. My first character was a Sorc and I was like "wtf this is so weak...how do I play this?"
Until 5th lvl, you're gunna have to be careful with positioning and using defensive skills.
Good job.
Thanks, you too.
“Bears. Beats. Battlestar Galactica.” - Not Dwight Schrute
Ranger is now my favorite class. Wish me luck on honor mode folks!
Are you able to combine volley with hordbreaker so you could shoot a free volley
We need a mod for beast master where you can ride on ur pet. HOG RIDER!!!!!!
That would be sick.
Fitz from the Assassins Apprentice books is 100% a Beastmaster Ranger
Looking good Kolo
Zordon skit got me to sub. 😂
Welcome! It's all downhill from here, I'm afraid.
shame the ranger comes online so late in the game when you get volley at level 11. You will have probably 20% game left roughly.
33:00 idk how people can do that, I guess i'm too much of a roleplayer 🤣
28:58 Colo ssus

I saw AdrianGK47 vent everyone!

I just wish that rangers got high enough to have swift quiver.
Ya buddy!
Boarbarian?
There was a beast master show? No! That isn't Dar! Dammit.
Anyway. Love that the most social of land animals can't summon others, nice... But the most solo can lol. And helmets look stupid.
That show was badass back in the day!
Waiting patiently for Karlach to be romanceable again before I get back into this game but these are still good videos
I don't wanna pick pocket Withers, how will he afford his retirement fund if I do?? :(
Screw 5th edition, Beastmaster is absolutely based
It's pretty awesome!
Merilwen's Meat grinder!
The guy that beat things with true strike used bugs in the code that caused it to trigger damage on enemies.
Why are you lying? If you watch the video he did so by using homebrew gear that Larian has in the game, specifically boots of thunderous clamor or whatever that place stacks of reverberation on targets affected by a spell/condition you hit them with.
@@NeverUseAnApostrophe I'm not lying. He fully admitted to using bugged interactions. Wasn't trying to hide it. True strike is not supposed to be able to cause stacks.
