  • Welcome back, Travelers! It's been a while since I released a class guide for BG3, and I was way overdue. I hope you guys enjoy this one!
    I know the audio is messed up in a couple of places. The recordings got corrupted a bit, and I salvaged them as well as I could. I am definitely working on figuring out this audio situation, because I know videos are not fun to watch when the audio is bad. I'm working on it, I promise!

      Yeh it's easy to lose sight of all of the build possibilities in a world of "ultimate honour-mode ready 1337haxx0r" builds.
      Most of those ARE very good, but there are hundreds of possible builds that could easily clear Honour Mode if you know how to use them. I'm always an advocate for using what you find more fun.

      In case you're looking for content to create, I'm hungry and I'm sure others are too, for trying playstyle builds. Instead of focusing on a class you focus the playstyle. Maybe not as general as "melee," but something closer to "melee caster" which could feature sword bards, trickster rogues, or hexblades. Throw in some "these are min/max dmg options, and these are your CC gods." Just a thought. Love your content!

    Making Wyll into a Bardlock just feels so natural. He's a very theatrical and romantical sort of dude. He looks like a natural with a lute in his hands.

    Command is actually one of the best warlock spells in the game, when you get to spellslots lvl 5, you can command 5 enemies at once, this is battle deciding. Just command all enemies in a battle ro drop their weapons, and boom, you already won

    • @PanicRolling
      @PanicRolling  5 місяців тому +12

      It's pretty gross, isn't it? Some of the low level spells with upcast effects end up being your most powerful spells, if you hold on to them.
      But yeh, 100%. If you have the ability to crowd control a large number of enemies, it can devastate their positioning and waste their resources. I'm all about it.

    • @Glaamdring
      @Glaamdring 4 місяці тому +3

      Yeah, and "stealing" your enemies' weapons that you just made them drop-right out from under them-doesn't require any resources from the action economy. You can just... pick up their weapons mid-fight-making them your weapons, even if you have no remaining Actions or Bonus Actions.

      Invisibility also works very well for confusing them. If you're down to your last party member standing, try out Invisibility if you are out of other options.
      Often they'll come looking for you and just end combat completely.

    Helpful tip: if you like to play as a warlock or run with one (or more) in your party, have another party member be a bard. Bard get song of rest at level 2, which effectively acts as +1 short rest per day. At only level 2 dip you could also go 10 warlock / 2 bard. If you hav multiple bards or bard multiclass characters in your party this stacks, so 4 party members with 2 levels in bard can get 6 total short rests per day, letting you replenish your warlock slots after even the most minor encounters.
    None of the origin party members are bards by default, so if you want one in your party and don’t want to take the dip yourself, Astarion makes a wonderful bard. It fits him very well thematically, lore wise, and you can select skills that make him almost as good as a rogue for stealing and stealthing.

    • @PanicRolling
      @PanicRolling  5 місяців тому +2

      Yeh this is an amazing tip and I'm definitely gunna slip it into my Bard video (which is next btw).

    I recommend staring out as a paladin, and after that one level go full into warlock for the rest of the game. That one level dip in paladin will do several things, if you want to go with pact of the blade, you can use inquisitors might to add damage via your charisma modifier, you will also get proficiency in medium and heavy armor, this is a big deal because warlocks can be a little squishy.

      One was that I was convinced the class was like a battle mage, more like a sword toting spell caster. The other was my propensity to roleplay my class. All Paladins must be the hero, and Warlocks must be the evil doers. Also my years as a tabletop D&D fanatic that the warlock had the army of the undead at his beckon call. Not to mention my first books were Gary Guygax white covers, and my friends stopped playing when 3rd edition came out. (giving my age away) so I am a little behind when it comes to 5th. Lastly I never played a warlock so everything I just said may be skewed. Absolutely going to give it a try my next playthrough after watching this. oh yeh, there's a reason the Charisma-based characters are the most popular. Most people want to directly control their Tav/Durge, so it makes sense for that character to be good a dialogue.
      I went the other route on my first run. Half-Orc Frenzy Barb/Thief Rogue and he did all the talking. The Barbarian dialogue options are hilarious.

    I run a Hexblade Warlock / Swashbuckler Rogue in a tabletop campaign, who is designed to be a superspy. Lots of charm like James Bond, the cunning of Danny Ocean, and the martial prowess of Jason Borne. I'm currently trying to implement the same template into BG3 using vanilla assets, attempting to do this without Mods if possible. (suggestions welcome)
    I would highly recommend you find a tabletop group if you haven't already. It is my steadfast belief that knowledge of one creates appreciation for the other. Meaning: if you like/love BG3, then you would most certainly be entertained by a well run tabletop adventure.

    Great video. From a roleplaying perspective it's kind of limiting to restrict warlocks to someone making a deal with a higher power in exchange for their soul, which always seems very foolish to me. Maybe they just have the ability to do magic thrust upon them for some reason beyond their comprehension and it could even be just random chance.

    Going full Goo Tome Warlock is highly recommended. You can acquire so many buffs and utility spells outside of your class, like speak with dead and extra summons, along with items that add spells. So the neat package of high powered spells along with the mass of cantrips and one-a-day spells becomes a really strong competitor. Just learn your list, get creative and strategic and you'll destroy everyone. No need for exploits or cheese. It also gels really well with becoming Half-Illithid.

    • @PanicRolling
      @PanicRolling  5 місяців тому +1

    My D&D warlock is a level 5 black dragonborn pact of the fiend. From what I recall, I took spells/cantrips with as many different damage types as I could to cover the most bases possible. Although, I definitely have to modify them for a BG3 counterpart (as certain ones came from sourcebooks that aren't in BG3 like Xanathar's, Elemental Evil, or Sword Coast Adventurer Guide).
    As for a Phantasmal Force story, I haven't used it myself; but I have a funny story of it being used on me, by another party member. I was playing a lizardfolk oath of vengeance paladin for the first time, that I'd deliberately designed to be the polar opposite of one. This paladin was introduced to the party as a trial & vice-versa: 'if they beat me, I join them' sort of thing. I'd throw hints here & there, but I did my damnedest not to give too much away in terms of what class I was & whatnot.
    3/5 party members were relatively battered & so was I, then I made the big class reveal via Lay on Hands restoring 20 HP to myself. Having an idea to try dealing with this unconventional opponent, the half-orc bard did a clutch gamble with Phantasmal Force on the INT save.... I rolled a 2 (since my character's an idiot with a -2 modifier, that meant I technically rolled 0) which incapacitated me. The bard described it as a Moana-esque cage scene. In response, I described crawling & skittering around the cage like General Grievous.
    A few sessions later, my paladin was in a very primal, savage mood & all other attempts to calm down had failed. The bard tried the same thing again to snap me out of it, this time it failed. & I basically went "try again, I dare you". 'Twas a hell of a contrast, all things considered!

    Heya. This is the first video I've watched of yours, and I'm already subscribed. How'd that happen? 😉
    Warlock is my favorite class, overall. I have so many concepts for it! (Not so much builds, others have the optimization angle covered.)
    I played a gnome Archfey warlock. Huge amount of fun, played up the whole trickster angle.
    I just created an Old One pact githyanki warlock. Concept: quisling.
    Gi'zharn made a secret deal with an ancient elder brain to spare her hidden creche. Her patron's colony won't attack the creche, as long as she doesn't interfere with them. Other illithid are fair game, and Gi'zharn goes out of her way to kill them -- she wants to keep up appearances in front of other githyanki. If they find out what Gi'zharn did, they'll kill her; but if she doesn't cooperate with her patron, it will slaughter everyone in her chreche.
    Gi'zharn glumly accepts the larval implantation, the Absolute, and such goings-on as part of her patron's master plan. She's depressed, paranoid, and expects to turn into a mind flayer any day now. Her hair is graying, her eyes are gray, and her once healthy yellow skin is now ashen and wrinkled; her burden weighs heavily, and the life bleeds out of her.
    I'm planning to pursue a Blade Pact build with Gi'zharn; good Con and proficiency in medium armor will help with that. Swords are nice too.
    Anyway. Your video gave me some solid ideas to pursue. I'm playing an Old One warlock for flavor, but it's nice to know the subclass is strong.
    Sorry to fill your comments with a wall of text. 😆

    • @PanicRolling
      @PanicRolling  5 місяців тому +2

      That sounds awesome! I love the hyper risk of a Gith making a deal with like... the ONE patron they should avoid at all costs lol.

    • @Quandry1
      @Quandry1 5 місяців тому +3

      While just for safety I'd advocate 3 warlocks and a healer... 4 warlocks pretty much eats encounters for lunch and continues on. it might be a little slow in certain spots if you need to rely on big spells but with a couple of different build options available just by default and then enhance that with some of the multiclass builds and there is a lot there.

    • @PanicRolling
      @PanicRolling  5 місяців тому +3

      Yeh I'd probably have one of them lean pretty heavily into Bard and be our healer, if I wanted to make sure they were all viable Lock multiclass builds.
      I honestly think the best part of this game is the random mixing of different classes into a working party.
      It feels much more like actual strangers being forced by circumstance to work together, rather than a min-maxed party.
      Nothing wrong with either approach, but I'm really enjoying the RP side of things.

    • @PanicRolling

      Yeh the fact that BG3 is a videogame kinda forced them to streamline some of the Wizard mechanics, and casting mechanics in general it seems.

      So just from looking at the chart right now, it looks like a more traditional spellcaster at 12th level would be able to cast 8 total Fireballs per Long Rest without considering Haste and other buffs.
      The main difference is that the Fireballs a 12th level Warlock cast would ALL be level 5 Fireballs.
      The traditional caster would be able to cast 3 level 3 Fireballs, 3 lvl 4 Fireballs, 2 lvl 5 Fireballs, and 1 single level 6 Fireball per Long Rest.

      Sorcs get to do gross things like cast multiple Fireballs in a single turn, or Haste multiple targets at the same time.

    One thing you missed on the pack weapon feature, not only are you proficient with any weapon you bind or summon, but that weapon will also use you Charisma modifier to attack rolls, it is also magical so can hit enemies that resist or are immune to normal weapons (though I don't remember BG3 really having enemies that can't be harmed with non-magical weapons).
    I could be wrong, as I don't try to test breaking concentration by casting a new spell, but I am pretty sure if you cast a new concentration spell it will end the old spell and replace it with the new one. If it does not work this way and you lose both spells as you suggest here, they really ought to fix that.
    Overall, I would say Warlocks are my least favorite class and I don't play them much. They are powerful, but simple, I prefer the versatility and complexity of a cleric, wizard, or even Sorcerer. Roleplay wise they can be a little interesting as you play out the patron dynamic, but BG3 does not have any patron, other than Wyll's. And even that is odd since most the patrons are evil, and everyone knows they are evil. It's not like you can be a innocent minded character that just did not know that the Demonic, Hag, or monstrous monstrosity was not as good an wholesome as you thought when you formed a pact. Every other class seems to have either more depth, or Roleplay options.

      I've definitely had my second Concentration spells just fail when I broke another Concentration effect before. I'm sure it was a bug, and it may have even been fixed already, but 100% annoying when it happens.
      The Patron situation is kinda bare in BG3. I understand why, but I do agree that it would be awesome to actually have interactions with other Patrons, and on your Tavs.

      Besides fiends you can rp great old ones and archfays as anything you want in your head. Like when I do great old one I don’t picture kthulu at all. I imagine I was able to channel a portal to commune with hadar … which is a far away star that is just trying to survive so it’s granting its remaining power so that it can absorb the life essence from those you kill. For good or evil. So it’s neutral. You could imagine anything though. An ancient whale creature. A giant stone golem. A fairy queen. A yuan-ti spirit. I love coming up with stuff like that for “head canon”.

      Arcana, Deception, History, Intimidation, Investigation, Nature, and Religion are the options you'll have when choosing your Proficiencies as a Warlock.
      Each has benefits, such as providing you with extra Dialogue options in conversations, or helping your character be more aware of their surroundings while you're out exploring.
      If you want a balanced choice, I'd pick:
      1.) either Deception or Intimidation
      2.) any of the others that aren't mentioned in 1.)

    Okay, I have one major irk with your video.
    No, warlocks powers are in fact theirs and they cannot be revoked. This is stated within the manual of 5e as it is one of the main things that differentiates them from characters like clerics or paladins. Even if their pact is broken, the only punishment would be you would need to find a new patron to continue to level up as a warlock, but everything you had up to that point will forever continue to be yours.
    Great video otherwise, but this is a very widely misunderstood mechanic I thought I’d point out 🙂

    I would like to create a female human Warlock.
    The Great Old One and 'Pact of the Blade'.
    My idea is to control enemies with fear and when for any reason one of them gets too close to me, I use my weapon.
    As companions I would take Laz'ael (battle master), Astarion (for romance + as a thief with 1 level fighter for shield proficiency) and Shadowheart (because I want to know her character story).
    But I have 2 problems.
    The first problem is the usual one: What name should I give my character?
    Does someone know a good name for a human female Warlock?
    The second problem is about Shadowheart being a trickery domain cleric.
    Why did Larian give her the absolutely weakest domain in the game?
    I know I could respec her and give her any domain I like, but she's a follower of Shar.
    So how can I give her another domain without breaking her story?

    • @PanicRolling
      @PanicRolling  5 місяців тому

      Both of those are tough to answer, haha! I always end up with some kind of edgier name for my Warlocks. My female Drow Lock's name is Katarina, which I based off of a character from LoL, actually. The characters are nothing alike, I just liked the name.
      As for Shart and her stupid doodoo subclass, I respec her immediately lol. I actually don't run her as a Cleric at all most of the time.
      She's been a Barbarian in my last 2 runs. Her Rage yell is not too shabby. You might try her as a Vengeance or Oathbreaker Paladin, though. I think both of those can fit with a Shar worshipper theme.
