So which is your favourite short-range SAM defence?

And one of the best missile shields in the game.

Don't the 120s need a radar track? So does the radar stop turning and instead tracks target slowly? Is this modeled in DCS? 🤔

@@Dan20q yupp radar tracks target (i believe via TWS) and locks target (no need for radar to stop turning) and fires missile which is a Fox-3 so it engages it's onboard radar to follow the target

@@Dan20q These missiles are such short range that I imagine the AIM120 goes pitbull almost as soon as it's off the rail.

For a more authentic experience, put 2-3 radars in the group with 6-9 launchers and spread them around the countryside over an area of around 10-15km with the radars on high ground.
The system becomes much harder to suppress and a radar on one side of the 15km can provide the track for a launcher on the other side. If you fly into that area below 20000 ft, you're pretty much garunteed to have a about 3 AMRAAMS coming for you with the radar/s coverage pretty much all being a no-escape zone.

Making realistic SAM nets in DCS makes the game incredibly difficult. I usually find myself balancing SAM coverage to make the missions more achievable.

They don't appear in DCS. Can you please explain how to make them in the mission editor - do not seem to be there for any country.

They are available for the USA and Joint Taskforce Blue. I dont know if they are only on the Open Beta version.

so does this fire in a tws like mode?

I dont know, its actually not a SAM system I use very often when building missions.

The radar is TWS, so yes, it's like firing multiple AMRAAMS at separate targets in an F16.
Except it can be done 360 degrees with two missiles from every launcher in the group simultaneously.
