Boss Katana TONE TRICKS - Parametric EQ

  • The Parametric EQ in the Boss Katana can be quite daunting, but broken down into its elements can be easily understood. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    If you follow the Studio Rats guidelines, you’ll have the best sounding Katana on your block. These are by far the best series for this amp, and for just general sound information.

      Completely agree! I have played for years and know how to dial in an amp but this series is fantastic for newer or seasoned players.

    Paul, can you do a video more about what the “problem” frequencies are and how to identify them? You sort act like it’s self evident, to me it’s not really. Maybe a bit about that tool you used to find it? Thank you.

    It's such an obvious thing to do, using the DAW EQ to sort out your tone before hitting the built in EQ, but I would have never thought of this. I like the visual representation on the computer to help investigate what changes happen etc. Thanks for this.

    Definitely glad I tried this out. It made a huge sound improvement with my Katana mkII Head and the cab I'm using, an open back 1x12" cab with a V30 speaker. Always sounded a bit too boomy and shrill, until I input these settings. Clean and overdrive tones are better and clearer. Thanks very much! This channel is excellent.

    Amazing video, just what I needed! Another thing about Katana 50II is that what I hear from the speaker is very different from recording with usb which I do a lot for my Spotify music. When I have good sound in the speaker the recording get muddy. A video that analyze what the different is between what you hear in the Katana speaker vs. usb would be very interesting. Maybe changing the speaker would help. Someone suggested Celestion FX12-X200 but I would like to know if it's worth the money.
    I also did a practical "solution" today by unmount the speaker and put an outcut of a tshirt in front of the speaker. Sounds silly but it made it less harsh. lol

    Great video Paul. Do you prefer using a parametric EQ over setting the Global EQ to the same parameters? I have noticed that I still get some noticeable fizz on the tails of my delay. I wonder if the parametric EQ would handle that better than a global setting. Thanks so much!

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  4 роки тому

      Hi Lim. Thanks for your comment. I think the global settings eq is the same, but it affects all the patches. the parametric is per patch. Play with the high cut on the parametric and see if you can control the fizz with that. Before you do have a look at the eq control in the delay tab.

      The global eq will eq every patch, so if you think a katana needs a boost or cut on every patch.

      @@TheStudioRats Might be something for you to add to your video playlist. Your videos are first class, however, I have had a katana nearly a year, spent endless hours on the tone studio, and it always comes back that the amp is best as a pedal platform. Unfortunately, I think this amp is massively overhyped, and simply cannot compete with a good valve amp..I am afraid it has run out of time..
