Mid Side EQ Simplified - A Powerful Tool for Stereo Mixing

  • In this video, I share a few ways to use Mid-Side EQ to improve your production and mixing. It is important to have a good understanding of Stereo EQ to get the most out of Mid-Side EQ but it can be used by anyone of any ability.
I find that it is a good tool to help me do less damage and be more precise when mixing but it is certainly not essential in most situations. It can be used to create width, depth and space in a mix. Many mixers use this to create a 3D, spatial sound stage.

You bring an ease and accessibility to your topics which give me some confidence to give them a go. I had to nod my head when you were talking about removing or adding this through L/R eq would remove too much, or not enough. I've been there. The focusing of the bass, also, really helpful. Thank you.

I think this is the best tip to get kicks and bass to the front. Before I used M/S eq, my kicks and basses would always be washed out and never cut through. Now it's just hilariously easy to get them in the font and you don't need to do anything else.

If there are people that work in FL that cant afford a mid/side eq, in Patcher you can split the signal with the Stereo seperator (preset mid to side) and you can rout that to two instances of parametic eq 2. That way you have a mid eq and a sidr eq.
