- The Boss Katana has a great way to swap around the Effect chains. In this video, I explain all the different fx options. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
You are a blessing to us katana users.. thank you for these videos..
Its a pleasure Paul.
Totally agree with you Paul.
They are so much better than even Boss could do themselves.
You’re shortening the learning curve significantly by making these short, easy to digest learning videos. I really appreciate your tips and advice. I hope you keep them coming for us lol.
Cheers spete34.
Totally agree.
Wow! Thanks man! I did not know this! And I have watched millions of videos and read the whole god-damn manual already. Cheers!
Thank you for the explanation! This channel is just what I was looking for. Recently got a Katana 50 have had the honeymoon period of twiddling knobs all over the place and now working through configuring my tones with a broader purpose. I feel it will be a great amp to be able to evolve the sounds as my playing improves and also as my understanding of the hardware/software increases.
Thanks for the wealth of info on the channel!
Cheers Barry!
As a new guitarist and someone that just got the Katana 100W head, this was extremely helpful.
I’m glad it helped.
I'm an engineer, just getting into learning guitar myself, instead of just tracking others. Today is the first day in Tone Studio, you got a new subscriber. This was crystal clear as to why certain things are pre vs post amp. Helped me out a ton!!!
Nice one, I’m glad it helped.
Thank you Paul. Putting the Compressor before the amp finally got me the tone I’ve been searching for. Cheers!
Glad I could help!
I just stumbled on this video Paul. I wish I had seen it earlier, it would have saved me so much time. I ended up figuring out everything you said including the punch line "if you start with chain #2 you should be golden". Yes!
Glad it helped!
More understanding for this Katana owner. More is always better. Thanks, Paul. Love your channel!
My pleasure!
This channel should be way more popular. Insane amount of knowledge here. Thanks mate. 🍻
Thanks Neville.
That was "GOLDEN" Paul. Thanks so much for explaining and showing us all the use of the Effects Chain. So chain 2 looks like it 's the best overall set up. I wonder why Boss decided that the default (Straight out of the box) chain was going to be set on number 3? for the Katana MK2. The MK1 was set up for Chain 2. Great video again Sir. Cheers!!

Loving this channel. This is the best katana resource I've found. Keep it up and thank you!
thanks
I am running a boss 212 and a boss 100 mk ii head and 212 cab and the stereo seetings are awesome and the chain makes a huge difference,
Never would have thought to look there
Thanks for all the good info.
Great video, Paul. Very helpful. Thanks so much!
Great Katana Master class !
Always learning something new from your videos! 😊😊😊
cheers Edison
Great content as usual. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
Amazing video. Thanks mate.
Very very helpful. Thanks heaps.
If this is the case then why wouldn't Boss give us the option to customize each chain ourselves ? I have no use for The Edges Tone not a fan . I wonder if Boss could change this with an Update of some sort ?? Or just remake The Studio to give us the freedom to set our chains how we chose .
Thank you for all your videos!! There are very useful
Thanks Giannis.
Ciao Paul thank you again. Looking forward to the USB direct record video. Ciao
Hi Marco, thanks, yep it's in the works.
Where does the FX loop output fall in the chain?
Great video 👍 just wondering are there any big differences with the v2 update recently adding an extra 4 signal chains is chain 2 still the best one
Also putting a phaser or flanger in front of the amp will give you the EVH thing which quite a lot of Katana users are after....
And where is the fx loop in relation to the effects? In the Amplifier block?
can you set a custom signal chain in the katana? is it possible to bypass the preamp entirely and use a booster as a preamp?
This isn't just a Katana lesson. This is an entire crash course in 5 minutes.
What would you recommend since the new update with more chains was released? The new chain2-2 puts mod before boost so the compressor would be first. Would this be the best one to go with?
Do a metal tone tutorial. More specifically Chuch Schuldiners tone. I beg you please
Hi Paul thanks for this. Not that it’s a dealbreaker, but just wondering if there is any way to use multiple effect types at the same time in the Katana. For instance a booster and a mod. Or an fx and a delay.
Yes but it’s limited. You can run a boost from the overdrive block and other fx from the mod block. There’s always way around it.
@@TheStudioRats Yes got it thanks.
can we not have our own custom chain? i was hoping i could get something like EQ->MOD->REVERB->FX->BOOSTER->DELAY
i, i would like to know how give less presence/volume at the effect (like univibe or phaser) because when i put down the volume of the effec,t go down so the guitar volume; there is a possibility to have the effect (any) at the volume that i need? thanks, Ottavio
Ow I have to figure out how to manipulate the chains in librarian. My delay keeps coming before the amp and I want to put it after in librarian.
Thanks man
cheers J87.
Hi Paul, where is the EQ located in the effects chain? I mean the EQ that is next to the NS. Thanks
What guitar are you using in this?
Its a custom shop 63 telecaster
It is possible to put the booster AFTER the AMP?I wanna put the preamp into RETURN of Katana, and then boost it.
Hi, would it be possible to run an external distortion pedal, and then use the internal tube screamer to run together
If I wanted to put some sort of overdrive/booster pedal in the chain for a lead solo (so the volume gets bumped up a bit and a little more drive gets applied to the tone, what would the best way to do that with the chains? Thx!
Boost as your first effect.
thanks for the video - would I be right in saying compressor in front of boost is impossible for Mk 1 owners - it seems they are unable to be separated. So if you have compressor first in the chain, you cannot use boost? I guess you just need to use the gain on the preamp
Hi Brent, yes that is correct.
If I have my own analog boost pedal going into the front of the Katana 100 is there any way to make that come after the built in Wah pedal in the chain or once I start adding real pedals I cant place any built in amp f/x ahead of that?
what if you want FX before Boost? Like wah before boost?
I don't get it, my tone studio only has 3 chains available and the booster/mod is always one panel, so you can only move them together.
jbrownil firmware? You may need to upgrade
Hey, I got Katana 50 MKII and I also got pedalboard (wah-comp-boost-od-delay). Some points I use this pedalboard. So when Katana preset is on and I push delay pedal on my pedalboard so that sound is bad. So there is no send return. Any suggestion except Katana 100 :)
Hi Burak, I’m afraid I don’t understand your question. We do the live Q and A Wednesday at 8pm BST. You might need to be more specific. Ask the question tonight.
What sounds better to you. This or the PG Spark amp?
The Katana is much more versatile.
Just realised there's so much I don't know about my katana. Geez
I think, i can create my own ambient sound without spending money for pedal..
