Mine 1997 fld 11.1 DD 60 original parts million miles and still runs like a champ as a OTR owner operator. Solid engine with an awesome fuel milage😍🥰💟💞💯💓
The peterbilt I ran this past year had a 475 cat C15 Acert that started right up in just as cold of weather as what you said in he video. Needed some juice because it had weak batteries, but it turned right over when it got that juice.
This is a typical DD 60 free emission cold start.. But once the engine start to rev the first time iit should keep going in this case either the fuel has geled up bad check valves prevent fuel delivery. The key for a good cold start on this older DD60 like any other older diesel engine is fresh fuel filters, good healthy battery and alternator. And of course antigel addetives
Lmao at all the people thinking that the motor is bad and/or damaged. Obviously they don't understand fully what cold start means, and don't know what a Diesel engine sounds like when running cold lol.
Bite Me again you are claiming something with no evidence. My 12.7l Detroit in Colorado weather below 0 will start after crank or two every time. The key is engine in good condition and making sure your diesel flows nicely and not gel up. I use two gallons of gasoline in each tank in winder and it starts like my car does
All our workover rigs use Detroit 60s, and many of them have almost 20k hours on them, and they dont start that nasty.. but I know nothing working in north Dakota starting them every day, I forgot.. it doesn't get that cold there, only -30
@@monkkeye What do you mean you add 2 gallons of gasoline in each tank? Can you do that without damaging the engine? Excuse my lack of knowledge, but I have never heard this before.. Thank you.
I don't see what the big deal is. It was a great cold start, I don't believe one second that the engine or the starter suffered. The batteries may have but it seems like they were ok. Detroit diesel engines can go through a lot worse than that and still go for a zillion more kms.
steven j personally speaking I don’t drive big rigs ... but I have some experience with heavy equipment..... I prefer just a oil pan heater because we all know how that 15-40 turns into glue at these temps
The cost of a generator is like $100-150 used for a 2kw generator that would power the plug in block heater. Let it sit for a hour or two with the cheap generator running. Or beat the hell out of your batteries, starter and engine for a UA-cam video.
wont hurt the starter any its made to do it if the motor is cranking an wanting to go you don't let off right away cause the fuel system can lose prime an its hard to get it back sometimes I do this a lot when trucks at work don't start before I roll them in to the shop to work on them
That’s so cool I like how stater had to run for two minutes trying to get it to run that neat as hell some real dumb people in the world of truck driver owner operators
Sorry, but which temperature is meant? +4 degrees Celsius, -4 degrees Celsius or 4 degres Fahrenheit? more for interest. Sorry, i´m a continntal european.
also to point out the powerstroke/Navistar 6.0 and 6.4's were designed in Europe and the duramax is designed by isuzu.and on a side note the 6.0 and the 6.4 liter suck.and that is why ford went in house on there diesels also dodge and Chrysler are owned by Fiat in italy.
+mack1ford Yes Sr that's why nobody wants to buy Navistar engines, they are JUNK like you said designed in Europe, International is having a big problem now because they cant sell their big rig Maxx Force engines, nobody wants them. You talk about FIAT, come on, every body knows Fiat is the worst brand ever, Fiat is Italian junk, ask anybody in Europe what they think about Fiat and they will tell you is a cheap car, when you talk about engines you have to talk about American Caterpillar, Cummins or Detroit, I'm talking about big rig engines I don't know much about the little P/U trucks.
Spray some either in that bastard and especially let it warm up before u drive it because if the cylinders get to hot before the engine block does the block can crack and that means you will have to get a new block and that will suck because it can not be good money wise and time wise
This was painful to listen to.....this start including the unnecessary reving was worth about 5-600 miles of road life......a hallelujah for a block heater .
i guess ya can't know what you don't know, but how freakin' ignorant revving an engine as cold as that one was!!!!! of course, that ignorance would also explain why it was decided not to plug it in. at least you didn't use ether!!!!
What would Cummins do ? It's 4 degrees we don't know the conditions of the engine. My 12.7 l series 60 will start in weathers below 0 with just a crank or two. This requires engine to be in good condition no air leaks which causes loss of prime. Adding 2 gallons of gasoline to each tank in freezing weather will keep diesel flowing and not gel up. Heck there ware times i forgot to plug it in weathers close to 0 in Colorado and it starts right up gotta keep that diesel flowing like water in cold weathers
i don't see what the argument is about Benz owns the rights to Detroit-Allison any way they also own the rights to Freightliner western star and sterling-ford heavy duty. Mack and Autocar are owned by Volvo so what is the point. nothing is really american owned any more.that peterbuilt was made in canada so is kenworth by paccar. some if not most of us cars are made in mexico. Why you might ask is cause it's cheaper.most of these trucks are assembled here in the states.
A good Volvo or a good Mercedes here in Europe will start right away even with frozen weather! I think american trucks have old style designed engines like we use to have here in the 80's but one thing is sure there trucks last lot more than ours

It’s amazing what fresh batteries can do without plugging it in
oh boy. Man, I learned the hard way about revving it/driving it when they're that cold.
Kusma Magdalene cracked block or what

This one probably sat a long time
I noticed a lot of Super truckers commenting , That video kicks ass ,I had a 1983 Kenworth cabover that started the very same way in the cold weather
Midnight Runner 68 cool?
Good God man...........DON'T rev it when it's that cold!!
thats exactly what i said
My first big diesel ive ever worked on still love this motor.

Hank jr Breukelman European Trucks would start right away, not like this 1950´ies Diesel engine

nawzy202 My old 2000 12.7 with 1 QT of Howes in the tanks started at -18 like it was summertime.

To this day he's still trying to get it started lol
And for my next video, how to replace the starter i just burned up...
More like how to replace my old cracked engine block
I can't believe he's reving the engine like that
Wouldn't hurt to plug your block heater in on days like this.

no glow plugs?
That really was a cold start!!
Heres an idea, how about letting the glow plugs cycle a few times? Must like changing starters?
Semis don't have glow plugs FYI!
Cory Garfield lmao awkward
Lol, no glo plugs, guy. This isn’t your f-350. Detroit’s ignite fuel by compression
The front end of that Pete and the sound of that motor we're equally painful emotionally.

Don't worry mine does the same thing its a detroit thing but they last forever
not true they all break sooner or later
At least you got it running
Nice E36
I wonder that the battery didn’t give up 💪🏻
ya gotta give the starter a longer break between cranks!
Not at that temp, i mean it wouldn't hurt too but not as nessacery
Looks like an old Magnum truck! Can you read the truck number on the hood still?
Western Dairy Transport out of Cabool, Mo. bought this truck brand new to haul milk.

do I need to turn my headphones up so you can hear my cold start.?
Would have a very nice putt putt sound with big pipes
My 2000 series 60 actually started faster in the winter than it did in the summer bitch would fire up as soon as I hit the key never plugged it in
Oh yeah it was
So it was above freezing? What's the big deal?
Semi engines are really big so the mass can't hear up enough to just fire up. Even at like 60 degrees you got a few cranks
Sorry, but which temperature is meant? +4 degrees Celsius, -4 degrees Celsius or 4 degres Fahrenheit? more for interest.
Sorry, i´m a continntal european.
Andreas Fuchs sorry for the layltw reply and this will probably bring you back to this video. But 4°Fahrenheit
How long was that starter engaged? lol
You got it see my lack in cold start
Boy you're very intelligent Raven that it cold engine up like that
I wouldn't do this to my truck, damn lol
Come on baby, wake up
plug that truck in.
jeez guy hows your starter
LMAO at the glow plugs comments
Welp she started but isn’t happy about it lol
love it

Right on man. The only Diesel engines that are worth my time are the 7.3 L and the new 6.7 in my truck.

you got to be using a separate power source
maybe of he let the glow plug s heat up more it would start better
Take that back once mine starts it stays runing
Little shot of ether??.
That might be a bad fuel pump or leak in fuel line.
Bad injectors
Bad injectors it was had weak pop off pressure and most likely gelling fuel this was in the beginning of my trucking career
Don't know what a 60 series is I only know 6 V 71 8 V 71 and I think 12 V 71
4 stroke Detroit
for now on keep the truck piuged up it will start better never rev it up
with the fast forward idea at 2:40 the video was ruined
Those are some well-charged batteries! bwahahaha
Spray some either in that bastard and especially let it warm up before u drive it because if the cylinders get to hot before the engine block does the block can crack and that means you will have to get a new block and that will suck because it can not be good money wise and time wise
give it a shot of either then crank , your just killing the batteries!
Shawn Jenson crank then ether if u absolutely want to use it
This was painful to listen to.....this start including the unnecessary reving was worth about 5-600 miles of road life......a hallelujah for a block heater .
2233golf2 it's a Detroit man. It will take the abuse. Even tho this isn't whqt I would consider abuse.
Lost it's prime , fuel jelled up
i guess ya can't know what you don't know, but how freakin' ignorant revving an engine as cold as that one was!!!!! of course, that ignorance would also explain why it was decided not to plug it in. at least you didn't use ether!!!!

nawzy202 you can tell its having hard time burning that fuel as its ticker then normal
Glow plugs. You have to let them warm up 2 or 3 times or more when its snowing df
nacha laica no glow plugs friend. That's why there is block heaters
that engine is not a happy camper
On my next video 🤔 how to replace the starter and also how to connect the plug for the heater 👎🤣 typical rookie 😏.
should try starting that pos in canada -30 -40 haha
Poor Detroit being abused! She's froze up! Fuel is likely starting to gel!
Not really not at 4 degrees maybe at -40
