Sorry to hear that, that’s a bummer. I’ve had good luck with ether/ starting fluid, this truck was factory equipped with a small ether bottle under the hood for cold starting.
With starting aid fluid they have already wrecked more than one piston and connecting rod. And the cold engine oil needs a lot of time to get to the lubrication points, so be careful with the revolutions after a cold start.
Indeed, after the small fixes it’s starts like a champ. No ether needed. Previous owners had several “bandages” on bigger problems. Turbo was a bad donor to get the truck running, injector 5 was missing badly, and what I believe was the main start issue was they had removed the one way valve on the fuel line at the back of the head. So when the truck wasn’t running, it would allow the fuel line to drain back to the tanks. With those issues fixed it starts great, new turbo, 6 new injectors, and some wiring redone. Engine only has right at 30k miles since it was inframed, head also only has 30k (replaced).
That block heater was not the issue. Turbo was a bad donor, injector 5 had a bad miss, and fuel was not holding prime and running back into the tanks when not running. The only thing that mattered was if it would run on its own or not, this truck sat for years in a companies bone yard before I decided to buy it. Once fuel primed it would start without issue, minus the injector miss.
Ever tried starting one at -40 degrees when it hasn't been looked at for over 2 weeks? Even if it's been plugged in the whole time it's not starting without its factory supplied winter start kit. I believe Detroits engineers know what they're doing.

Love this engine and enjoy working on them for 40 years
Love running over head
ABSOLUTELY----> OUTSTANDING!. 🙂
yeah did that with mine 1 time and broke rings in # 6 cylinder, lesson learned!!!!!

Great way to trash a motor!
Motor was already trash
@george9417 you do?
Heated air or heated diesel works better that the fucking start pilot
If an engine needs ether. Theres something wrong with it.

@Chasewater Model Boat Club, Try telling that to Ford when they designed the 'York' Transit diesel
Try living in New England in the winter and then tell me you don't need any
Why not just plug in the block heater, that is how you ruin an engine.
Wow.

I never used eather on one period
If you need it get a real mechanic
Don’t need a mechanic, truck is already fixed.
