Will the detroit diesel 671 start with good batteries? 1st start after engine swap

- This running detroit diesel 671 was just transplanted into this gm 4104 bus. It’s running very smooth after a tune up and sone adjustments. Smokey son of a gun that will hopefully clear up with some driving.
Man I wish I could work on stuff like this with my dad. Cherish these moments.
An EMD locomotive has essentially the same 2 stroke engine only bigger 8 1/2 x 10 inches max rpm on a GP 10 was 935. I used to be a locomotive engineer and had to pick up my power for third shift switcher at Beacon Park just outside Boston. This engine had been in storage for three years. The just fired it up before I got it and simply made sure it was full of water in the cooling system, full of lube oil and fuel. It had been running just over 20 minutes. Once I got up to the west end of the yard and started to pull track 2 on the piggyback loading tracks I on direction of my conductor started pulling west past the yard office. When I went past the yard office I was in the 4th notch of power and laying down a smoke screen that would have hid a WW II destroyer. Once I finished the pull of 30 cars I noticed the smoke had decreased significantly. The engine by this time was fully warmed up.
I feel your pain.
There’s nothing like the sound of a good o’l Detroit.
It's nice to see father and son working together cherish these times both of you happy holidays to you guys.
Yes, father and son work together without fighting! That is great to watch!
I used to work on everything from vehicles, farm equipment, to plumbing with my father. You guys are a great pair! These are times to be cherished.
I retired as a diesel mechanic after 42 years ,love your videos keep up the good work.
Sounds like Tyler's bus might have rolled over twice before it lit off. Amazing.
I'm in Massachusetts and I saw the smoke cloud from here. 😉
Im in Zürich Downtoen and still saw it lol
I thought it was just some very cloudy day here in West coast Finland...
I'm in Worcester and I saw it too!!!
I felt bad for Tyler when he kept getting smoked out! Although two-stroke diesel exhaust does smell better (I think) than four-stroke, that was a thrashing. Tyler is a trooper and stuck with it until the engine was running nice and smooth. Hopefully, the road run and/or injectors will fix the smoke-outs! Thanks for the update Scott.
It'll smell like any typical older diesel.
Diesel exhaust can cause asthma if you are exposed to it frequently.

Well Done Scott.. You really have the Feel and Ears for what a Detroit wants..
All kidding aside about the smoke, I'm sure I can speak for everyone, we LOVE Scott and his channel and we eagerly look forward to seeing the next enjoyable, informative videos.👍🏻
I'm pretty sure Tyler's bus was one of my best for starting and running awesome right out the gate!
Awesome, I’ll be doing the same thing on a 6v71 that hasn’t been run for 25 years. Rack is free now but starter has issues, should have it running soon.
Bridge to engine room - MAKE SMOKE
Great to see it start now the bat-flattery fault has been cured.
That is some outstanding progress - congratulations. You know all the tricks. Smoky!
anti-mosquito system for the neighborhood. the kids will love it. good steady strong timing and rev
You gotta love the smell of diesel in the morning. Maybe not, but to see her run is sweet. 👍👍👍
Good job guys👏👏👏
Very nice sound, unfortunately here in Brazil we had few trucks with 2-stroke diesel engines and most them had an in-line4 or a V6 of the 53 series.
Greetings from Porto Alegre, Brazil
I like 👍 that cold 🥶 start at 12:17!! Your friend, Jeff.
That 6-71 idle's gonna make me fail NNN. Sooooo smooth! Nice job
You handle that smoke like a champion Sir!
good video, I enjoy watching u working on the busses & keeping them going
Love watching you guys work on these things. I'll never get there, but watching you guys is great therapy, thanks
Can’t believe Tyler’s bus started that effortlessly; not a bit of smoke either. I’ve never seen anything like that before and I’ve been around a large fleet of 6-71s and 8-71s.
great way to get rid of Mosquitos! thanks for explaining the smoke, I kept asking as I was watching why all that smoke, guess you heard me.
Great seeing Scott and Tyler working together.
I just love those guys they are very very good at what they do on those buss
At 14:37, the first sight of happy 671 music. Now don't cheat, wait for it. All good things come to those who wait!
Modern diesels have advantages when it comes to diagnosis. Just having glow plug ports is one, you can have a peek at cylinder pressures.
With the VW common rail, I can look at the data and watch all cylinders. The glow plugs all include a pressure transducer.
No matter, I learned the ropes with heavy diesels. Feel. Listening to the idle. Watching the smoke.
Scott and Tyler are enjoying old school. Man, I love it. Back to watching....
19:20. Bliss. Absolute happiness, Scott. She's begging for a ride on her own power. I can feel it. Ooooorah!
Time to clean up. Have some dinner with mama. You really made my day off today, guys! Stay warm.
I was gas turbine technician, and also worked on General Motors EMD 16 cyl electric generating diesels. In colder weather, they could idle for hours and not get watmed up. Put them on line, where they were under full load for 30 minutes, and they would heat right up, and the stack would run nice and clear......
Tyler seems to have a great engine. I’m very happy for him !!!
That's not Tyler's bus.
One of you watched the whole video, the other did not ;)
Lol, I'll confess. I stopped in mid video to reply and then I couldn't delete it after I discovered the error of my ways. 🤓
Gus smoked till we got him out on the road. Cleared up right away.
Just need3d to burn off the oil 😉
The sound is like the postbus here in Finland on the early 1970.... Krom, krom, krom, krom.....
Have a nice day. Regards Stig Österberg from Dalsbruk (a small willage in South Finland)
Tylers bus was awesome and it sounded great
Well done guys on getting it running we all have been waiting for the day she/he is running.
Great job it lives again.
Scott,
It wouldn’t have been easier to do an in frame on the original engine including the blower? Next item you need for the shop is a forklift preferably that’s been sitting for years as I watched on UA-cam 2 different mechanics buy forklifts that had been sitting outdoors for 17 years both of them are Clark made with Nissan 4 banger engines. One ran fine then died after it warmed up. Just needed a new ignition module inside the distributor, both were gas engines with propane conversion kits from the factory. The mechanics spent an average of $1500 in repairs and parts. Mustie1 was one mechanic and Watch Wes Work. Very good diagnosis mechanic. He got his in a trade . Both machines are forward and reverse only. And worked just fine other than needing brakes on Wes’s machine and the brake reservoir was empty and needed cleaning. Both machines are 100% severiceable.
Food for thought
I enjoy watching your videos on your maintenance on the Detroit 2-strokes. IIRC, there was a movie titled "Dr. Detroit". I'll call you "Dr. Detroit Diesel ". Keep the videos rolling.
After all the smoke, adjust the buffer screw. It sounds like it is a good engine. Thanks for letting me hear it.
You mean the smoke buffer screw or the Great smoke wall screw? :)
Yes, sounds nice!
Yep love that GM sound
Sounds like a compression problem. Does not crank even. Seems to miss while running. Burning oil, smokes like a freight train. Tyler's old bus runs like it should.
the engine had been sitting idle for awhile, detroits don't like that. after running under a load for an hour or two the smoke will clear as the rings reseat. the uneven cranking is due to gm's wonderful design of running the battery cable 20 feet between the battery and the starter motor...
I agree man. That uneven crank sound has me worried. Hope that is its some stuck rings that loosen up when it gets hot.
Could just be some rust on the valve seats as well. Even with a bad hole or leaking valves it's probably drivable for a few years before it needs an in-frame rebuid.
AQUATICSLIVE Yes, that would be the best outcome. But, unfortunately, all the signs point to a whipped engine that needs an overhaul.
@@DEW409 Yeah I agree it really sounds rough just being hopeful but the reality is it I wouldn't trust it on the road. The tow bill is just too much to take the gamble.
Tyler's bus starts better than my (gas-powered) car!! Amazing.
Tyler's engine in his bus is a really good engine to start and run like that from cold!
Great to see father/son working 2gether
The diesel mechanic at the charter/line run bus company which I worked for nearly forty years ago had a habit of adding blendzall to the filter canisters during priming. It seemed to make the first startups "not as Ridgemont-like"...
Nice paint. Sounds like one hole still has a problem though. Hopefully the miles will fix it.(Stuck rings is my guess too). But bad injectors can sometimes fool me.
It's alive!! Well done Scott and Tyler.
I miss working with my dad
Your a good Dad!!!!!!!!!!!
Looked like Tyler was in a Cheech and Chong movie!
My dad had an 81 Freightshaker w/VT903 Cummins...it would make THIS 6-71 look like a 2020 California Diesel! There were a few times the Fire Dept. came to check on it....Everyday warm up! (It was worn out....took almost the whole Air Tank to start it and a Half can of "Start Ya Bastard")
Not cheech an chong scott did say fast times at ridgemont high lol
Thanks for sharing. Ref: Tyler's bus, don't know if anybody has mentioned but on the back of Tyler's bus, you have the Two Eye's, (Rear Windshield's) the Nose, (Round stamped metal) all you need is the mouth. Anybody artistic, could have fun with that.
Keep up the good work fellow I say it again damn you all are the best
The cloud of smoke as Spicoli rolls out of the smoked out VW stoner van 😄
Stoner bus
I totally got that “Fast Times” reference there…….. Aloha
Loving the Black smoke.
From the 50s.
Life in Hoosier land is good for tyler
That's a dang ol skeeter fogger if I ever saw one!
put 2 quarts of marvel oil in the engine. drive it. if the rings are not broke, it will clear up in 100 miles or so.
Sounds just like the fire trucks i grew up with!
Some of our old trucks had detroits in them. Sadly, those trucks aren't are gone. Serving somewhere else.
Excellent team work! You guys could get anything going and dialed in! Maybe get a construction barrel fan for times like these to save your eyes and lungs?
Holy smoke 😁 great vid Scott!!!!
What a SMOKER
IT''S ALIVE
ALIVE!!!!!!
Smoked Tyler out of there, Great job guys! Saved another one!
Impressive engine revs at 16:13. Your friend, Jeff.
_"Fast Times at Ridgemont High"_ - lol, a little 1982 for ya there! Cheers-
these DDs have very low compression for a Diesel at 18 or so, a Benz Diesel has up to 25. even a turbo has 22 compression ratio. No wonder they don't want to fire off when cold. no glowplugs either. Blockwarmer is really the only thing that will help
Ether
@@edwardpate6128 ether is not a solution, more of a band-aid
@@uliwehner True, best fix is flattening the cylinder block. Not only for more compression but also better cold starts. Diesel Fuel changed alot since the 50's. This method is used in old boat engines too. 18 Bar is just too low..
Oldsmobile diesels also have a 22:1 compression ratio.
Oh what a glorious sound 😍🤗😀
Sounds good and the smoke will clear up as i can see it's on the way to doing that.
A length of pipe on that exhaust to get away the smoke while your working on the engine might help a bit
Smokey... Love it!
It's great to see Tyler
Why you coughing? Have you got COVID? "No I have the "Cold Detroit Starts" syndrome". Doc smells your shirt and confirms.
Maaan it sounds healthy once you tweeted it
How nice to hear Kitty Wells again.
Tyler got a great bus!!!!
Yeah that is one smoking engine. I hope it clears up for the new owner.
Enjoyed your video , just a minute I gotta open a few windows my throat is burning
671 Detroit #1 longest longevity reliability on land and the sea.
All those thinking this was smokey have never started an old Gardner on a winters morning. Once it fires you go have a brew until the clag clears 😂.
Exhaust hose is just the thing needed. But seem you've gone a bit dim from the fumes. Thanks for the vids.
Sure, but how about we make sure it runs before we spend the time putting the exhaust on the engine to hook the hose too.
It might be nice to put a flexible hose extension on the exhaust pipe so the fumes don't surround the workplace.
This takes me back to the 70’s and 80’s when I worked at Trailways in Charlotte.
Kinda funny watching the axle rotate while your running the engine.
Tylers 6-71 starts like a brand new motor, right on the button.
I see neighbours with nearly brand new Kia with a diesel with glow plugs crank longer.
My Volvo V70 with a 4-stroke DT525 volkswagen/Audi diesel engine fires that well and it has 250+ thousand miles on it.
That noise is an automotive orchestra!!!!
There’s something sexy about a Detroit with a loping idle
LOL. Engine starts.. pulses repeatedly close caption prints out [music]
Detroit diesels sing the sweet of fuel to noise lol
If I owned one of these things that Detroit would be on a pallet on ebay. A Detroit is cool for the first 10 minutes, then you realize its a gutless, narrow power band, full guzzling noise machine. Put an 8.3 cummins in that bus, you will double the hp and double the city mileage. Bet it still could achieve 12-13mpg on the highway.
@@kevinoscarson2941 it would but you wouldn't have pissed off epa people giving you the stink eye lol. It's like putting stacks on a rusted out pickup it serves a purpose and the purpose is to convert fuel to noise
@@jeffgarrett2114 -DD is the most efficient diesel to noise machine made.
@@kevinoscarson2941 agreed 100% lol
Smoky the bear 🐻 Wow !
The 6-71 in my boat starts like that when cold several cycles to build up some heat and then smokes like cheech and chong until you put a load on it. Once it's hot though the smoke goes away and she runs like a champ. Could probably use new injectors and a tune up from the 🐵
Friggin 8D’s... I had to change these on the roof of a high rise up a ship ladder on a mezzanine. Hate them things!!
I can smell it from here. Reminds me of my Borward.
Tyler's started right up with basically no visible smoke! That's a healthy engine!
sounds well nice
I was thinking more along the lines of Cheech and Chongs 'Up in Smoke'.
How about doing a relative compression test using an amp probe on the starter wire and a pico scope with the rack in the no fuel position.
Get some time on it with a load. It will improve
Scott. The 4104 sounds as if it has a miss on a cylinder. I hope I'm wrong but I have a pretty good ear.
I take it you cleaned the scavenge chambers and the aircleaners are OK?.;Smoke could also be oil from the old engine in the exhaust ,burning out.
Man, you won't have to worry about mosquitoes in the summer at all.
Holy smokes! Loved the video! Great to see Tyler! Hows your back Scott
It needs to be rebuilt again.
Looks like it's in gear the axle is turning while setting the govnernor.
