  • The ATARI 2600+ (ATARI 2600 PLUS) is finally here and Game Closet is going extremely in depth with its review. The kiddie gloves are off and the results of the testing my not be what you were expecting from Atari.
    There is good and bad, and a comparison to the Hyperkin Retron 77 is also on the table. HDMI on the console is a great contemporary add but is it the saving grace? Let's find out the great things and the flaws together.
    *** UPDATE NOTE: After some more testing over the next day... the sound issue I was experiencing has mysteriously disappeared. A ghost in the machine? A recording issue? Who knows. 🤷‍♀

      I've seen some intermittent sound issues when going from 7800 to 2600 carts via hotswapping. Not like what happened with you tho

    10:21 this has something to do with your set up, not the 2600. I ran the same test you did, using 7800 Dig Dug and then Kaboom. There is no fade-in audio lag created by the 2600+. That's your HDTV's doing. I'm positive. Try plugging in your 2600+ into another TV.

    I share your frustration at the lack of a wall socket adapter, but getting mad for this is like getting mad at the wind. Nothing comes with a USB power adapter anymore and nothing comes with a thick paper manual either. The reason is simple: by not supplying a power supply, they ony have to manuacture one SKU and the same product can be sold in every country, regardless of what the wall plug looks like. If thy included a US-style wall socket, it could only be sold in the US and Canada, vs the way they did it, which means every country.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      I appreciate your comment. I kindly disagree as I have many products that come with an adapter. Example: the Retron 77.
      Yes, its frustrating, but I wouldn’t say I was “mad”. When that happens, I usually turn green, rip my shirts apart, and go fight bad guys with my buddies, Thor and Tony! 😂
      It’s a comedy games channel. Check out my other videos. Enjoy your Atari and hopefully we’ll see you again soon. I do have a full Atari playlist on the channel if you’re an Atari lover. One of my faves is my Evil Pac-Man video. Cheers! 😎

      @@GAMECLOSET Well, I don't see it as something you can disagreee with - I'm not arguing that devices shouldn't come with wall plug adapters, just that most do not and the reasoning from their point of view.
      The RetroN77 came out in 2017, that was six years ago. Since, there have been very few consumer grade products that come out with power adapters. It still happens every now and then, but such products are the exception, not the rule.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      @SatoshiMatrix1 However, many do come with adapters. The Raspberry Pi 400 also came with an adapter. Just because it’s a “common practice” among some cheap companies doesn’t make it right. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate you.😎😀

    As for the sound fade-in issue, do you happen to have some volume leveler on your TV? That might be why you have the fade-in issue perhaps? Not sure if you have a different TV to test on, but I wonder if that's what you're experiencing

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      The sound issue wasn’t with the TV though as I recorded the audio prior to it going to the TV and you can physically see the audio fade in on Final Cut Pro (my video editing software). It’s not on my computer or capture software either as all other consoles don’t do this.
      It gets stranger! The issue is gone. As of this afternoon, the issue no longer happens. I switched from that TV to my 4K computer monitor and back to the TV on my wall and no sound issue. Odd huh? Haha. A ghost in the machine? I appreciate your reaching out and your comment. Stay tuned!

    I can understand some of the nits, but the power brick one strikes me as silly. I have about 8-10 kicking around my house in different places. Heck, I can go to the local Dollar Tree and pick one up for a few bucks. I bought a Samsung phone back in September, and it didn't include a power brick either. That doesn't count as a strike against Samsung to me.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      I respect that. But I have several consoles that included one. And I don’t have 20 extras lying around. Batteries not included in electronics? Sure, they’re disposable. But you’re paying for everything you need to actual use it out of the box. Your ca’s dealer didn’t make you post extra for the steering wheel… 😎😀 Thank you for the comment!

    For the biggest bang for your buck, buy the Atari Gamestation Pro. You can't play your original carts on it. However, it has a micro sd card slot for 2600, 5200, 7800, NES (supports game saves), Sega Genesis, GBA, MAME Arcade ROMS with bezel artwork and much more. THE MSRP is $99.99 and $79.99 at your local Costco. I'm loving my Atari GSP! If and when the Atari 2600+ can utilize an OTG cable to add some more games via USB, I will most likely pull the trigger and buy one. Great review and seeya on the next one!!!

      The joysticks on my GPS work just fine. I have yet to experience any lag even remotely noticeable. It is worth mentioning that I prefer using my PS5 controller or my Xbox Series X via usb-c on the GSP. This is simply due to the fact that the original design of the 2600 controller was never comfortable to begin with. Plus with today's modern controllers, you have the use of analog sticks and many more buttons. Kinda like plugging in an original Sega Genesis controller into an original 2600. And at my young age, it's all about comfort...🙂

  • @provisionalhypothesis

    You don't need a power brick. You can power this directly off the USB of your TV set. Provided you didn't cheap out when buying your TV. (based on your other comments, I bet we know the answer to this one). Shit, I have 3 on mine.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      While that is true, many people have several consoles plugged in at the same time or the unit isn't close enough to the TV. While I appreciate your idea, Atari's solution isn't the best cookie-cutter solution for a best fit. Commodore included a power adapter with its Amiga 500 Mini and it really shows a higher level of quality. If Atari had just added a couple of more things to make a GREAT product instead of a passable one, it would have been a home run right out of the park. Include: the power adapter; two buttons on the controller for 7800 games (instead offering us an updated controller later for $30 more dollars which they are doing (when you buy your car the steering wheel is included)); and since this is running a version of Stella complied with their software, Save stated for 2023 would be a great contemporary add. At-Games does it (and their quality is so-so), and Hyperkin did it with the Retron 77.
      Atari should have done just a tad better than 80%. Paddle games working is a GREAT win- Hyperkin couldn't get it done. Updated Stella on my Retron 77- Warlords plays sloppily, Kaboom is barely passable, and Super Breakout is unplayable. On Atari 2600+ WIN, WIN, WIN!
      I love Atari, but like your own children, you expect them to do better than average. I expect average from At-Games and Hyperkin. Thanks for your comment! I appreciate you. 😎😀

    There is not a sound fade-in issue on the 2600+. I agree not including the power brick is a bit lame but I have several spare chargers as I'm sure most people do nowadays. Plus the 2600+ can be hooked up to a TV's USB port. Per the Atariage forums a firmware update via the USB cable is coming. Also they are releasing a 7800 controller.

  • @urbanknish
    @urbanknish 7 місяців тому +2

    Some notes: 1) I double checked my setup and did not have the sound issue. Maybe it's a video capture card thing? 2) I did connect my Atari 2600+ to a Windows PC and it recognized it as a 'Rockusb Device" when you hold down the reset and flip the power switch on. So this is probably how we will sync it for a firmware update. 3) I had some games not work even though they are on the list as working. I cleaned them up, no dice. But since I'm a huge retro-game weirdo, I have multiples of many of these games and the 'other' copy would work. 4) Dirty secret: When I tried "Fast Eddie" cartridge it had a Retroarch error! I mentioned this on another youtuber's feed and my comment was deleted. Slave to the sponsor. Amiright? If Atari's don't fix the issues, I'm 100% hackers will!

    • @GAMECLOSET

      Excellent tips! Thank you so much. I did have a couple misfires on the carts, but I gave them a quick clean and they worked. As for the John Hancock game, it’s brand new so I Wii test on a real 2600 this weekend.
      So, that means they’re using Retro Arch for their emulator… interesting.
      Fast Eddie is on my list to play for a video upcoming so, I’ll keep that in mind too. As for the sound issue… I’ll have a look at that. Maybe the game capture was messing with it. Good point. I was playing the 2600+ straight through to my TV later, but I didn’t pay attention to the sound issue- if there was one. I appreciate your fantastic comment and it’s not getting deleted! 😀😁

    My Dig Dug 7800 cart fits just fine. There's something wrong with your cart. Also, my 2600+ is going to my Denon receiver through HDMI, and I do not have that audio fade-in that you are experiencing.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      In the video after this one the audio issue was explained as an anomaly. I can’t reproduce it. The Dig Dug was a possible pin displacement another viewer said as it works fine now.
      However today, I did find a 2600+ game that doesn’t work. I haven’t checked the list, but Tac-Scan will come on fine, but you can’t start the game. It’s really odd. Atari noted that their 7800 2-button games’ buttons are reversed too, and the difficulty switches are reversed in many cases. They are working on an update. Thanks for your comment! 😎😀

    One struggle I've had with the Retron77, although I haven't tried everything with the 2600+ yet, is that because it has to perform a full ROM dump, any little loss of connection or dirty connection will result in a fail to read. When you're using the OG hardware console, some more finnicky carts are at least usable with a few removal/reinsertions, or tapping in one side first.
    I had this issue a lot with the Retron5 and NES games. My NES very often has to get tapped or inserted in *_just_* the right way to get it to read some carts, and I could spend literally hours trying to clean them all, and some still wouldn't read at all on my Retron5. lol.
    With Atari, it doesn't help that I can't board-swap better condition carts for the collection because of the screws under the label. At least with NES, I could find a nice readable copy with a torn label for super cheap and swap it into a mint-looking copy. Not super possible with 2600.

    6:53 I don't know what to tell you. I have a copy of Dig Dug 7800 and I have no problem putting into the 2600+. The cartridge bay clearences are much better on the 2600+ than they are an actual 7800. You shouldn't be experiencing any isses at all. Perhaps your Dig Dug pcb contents are slightly bent?
    That said, Dig Dug 7800 has an odd graphical glitch on the 2600+ where it shows one horizontal row of red and blue pixels just under the score HUD. This doesn't affect gameplay, but it is an error in the 1.0.0 firmware. Hopefully this gets fixed. This is a true bug in the emulato.

    John Hancock told me at TORG that Catacombs of Chaos was his only homebrew that works on the R77. Plus, like I mentioned before, I'm one of those suckers that pre-ordered on Aug 22nd and got the December shipping email last week. My buddy ordered from Amazon 2 weeks ago and already has it. Boy, am I dumb.

      Well, that aggravates me. I paid for the thing 3 months ago. If I could, I'd cancel the order. Since there was that 30 day cancelation clause, I'm out of luck. The R77 isn't perfect, but it's good enough. I wanted to play paddle games again and the 7800 aspect was appealing. At this point, I'd rather just have my money back and forget it.

      @jupitermenace9920 The Atari Game Station Pro is supposed to be quite promising. I’m happy I can play the paddle games on an HDMI tv now, but you’re right. Sometimes shipping frustrations can be aggravating. But, when you get it, you may actually enjoy it. I was given some tips and I’m going to try a few more things too.

      same I thought it was all gold and diamonds until I heard you say it was emulators, again. If I want to play an emulator I can probably play a 42kb Atari rom in my web browser with only a quick link. Who wants to enjoy that faux emulator vibe anyways? That Berzerk special edition looked tempting though...but no more interest after this. When will they ever make a real hardware machine, probably one minute when I die at old age.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  6 місяців тому

      @generalkawasaki9485 while I agree with you, this 2600+ isn’t too bad. The drawbacks which need updates because of Atari’s shortsighted “shove it out the door” policy are getting ironed out. In several ways it’s better than the Hyperkin Retron 77, but nothing is like REAL hardware with 100% compatibility. Heck, If settle for 98%! I think that Supercharger games on tape are extreme niche since there’s only like 10 games and they’re ultra rare (plus only the extreme collectors even care about them. Plus, the games I’ve seen are meh 🤷.)

    I still own the original Atari 2600. Mine has the difficulty switches which is a bit harder to find and it still has the certificate,the instructions,and the warranty sheet I don’t know what year is mine but I’m guessing 1977 or 1978 because it’s the woody model.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      They produced the woody up until they made the all black “Vader” about 86 i think. Then they began producing the Atari jr. I sell have a fully boxed original heavy-sixer! The original. It’s the Sears branded model, but potato/po-tatto! 😎😀 I have another one that I got from a goodwill about 23 years ago that looked like it has never been used. I looked at it then put it right back in the box. It’s factory new looking. Pretty cool.

      @pkcell6409 that’s really cool. I have at two heavy sixers (one boxed), three light sixers, a couple of four switches, and four juniors (three of which are decorating the walls of my studio). I need to sell a few of these as I really have no need for them. Plus, I have a small trunk of Ataris that need recapped. I do not have a black “Vader” Atari console though. I never have owned one of those.

    Ribbed For her pleasure, This was a fantastic honest review, I agree with you I'm fed up with these companies trying to save a couple of dollars By not Supplying a power block, We have so many devices these days that Just come with USB and I am fed up of having to buy A plug As is annoying to keep switching Stuff around, I think the system actually isn't bad for what you pay but saying that Atari Could have made it much better We've just a little bit more time and effort, I've watched a few videos where people are having trouble getting the 7800 Games running, But my understanding of modern day Atari Is that this is probably the best product they've put out in years As generally they haven't been very good and the parent company are just money grabbers

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому +1

      Supplying everyone with a power cable, and 2 two button joysticks would have been job 1. Paddles too? Maybe not, but don’t say you’re producing a two-button controller for purchase next year! That’s like selling a car and saying the steering wheel is extra. Thank you for your great comment! 😀😎

      @provisionalhypothesis 7 місяців тому

      @@GAMECLOSET Hey, look... you're cheap man. 89 bucks and this company couldn't make any money. And you wanted an extra joystick in there as well ? Pinche. 89 bucks isn't what it was in 2000, and it certainly isn't what it was in 1983.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому

      @provisionalhypothesis Commodore supplied a power adapter with the Amiga 500 at the same price point. I did not say I wanted another controller, I wanted a second button for the 7800 games that require it. Go play Pole Position II for 7800 or Choplifter with your included controller… I’ll wait….
      You can’t play them. When you buy a car, the steering wheel isn’t extra. Everything is included to drive the car. Paddles??? Well, that’s a grey area maybe. But adding a second button to the controller would have been easy. They are coming out with a two button controller for that purpose for $30. If every console you owned didn’t come with a power cable at all so you can plug it in, and you had to play $8 to $10 per adapter, you’d get a little annoyed. Buying in bulk from China as they do, they would probably paying .25 cents each. Charge me an extra $10 bucks if it makes them happy in the tummy, but at least put it in the box. Batteries not included- okay. Power adapter not included- FAIL.

      @chemicalburrito782 7 місяців тому

      @@GAMECLOSET The funny thing is that you actually CAN play Atari 7800 Pole Position II with a one button controller ... on an actual Atari 7800. In Pole Position II, the left button maps to accelerate and the right button maps to brake. On a real 7800, the single button maps to the left button in Pole Position II - so you can accelerate but not brake with a one button stick. (Arguably, the brake really isn't necessary for the game.) But the 2600+ has the 7800 button mapping reversed, so with Pole Position II on a 2600+ you can only brake and not accelerate. Not too fun.
      The button mapping is reversed for all 7800 games on the 2600+ - it's a bug that Atari actually knows about at this point and is hopefully going to fix with the next firmware update for the 2600+. What amazes me is that no one caught it before the console was released - I guess no one playtested the 7800 side of the system.

    • @GAMECLOSET
      @GAMECLOSET  7 місяців тому +1

      @chemicalburrito782 the sad thing is they let it out the door like that! Wow. The funny thing is I didn’t even try my Pole Position II yet. I didn’t bother. I do have a 7800 joystick, but it wasn’t working right so I edited that out. I will have to connect my 7800 up again. I could swear it works though. 🤷‍♀️ Thank you for the fantastic comment! 😎🤷‍♀️

      That’s a good thought, but I don’t think so. Apple even claimed the whole “there’s billions of power supplies already out there” yet the still produce and sell them for $29. For Atari it’s skimping to fatten the bottom line. Apple too.

      Crazy how companies think saying it's an e-waste issue is believable, when appliance companies build a washer/dryer/refrigerator with the expectation that it'll fail after 5 years and a single appliance is the materials/waste of at least 5,000 power bricks.
