Atari 2600 games in HD! I'm in Heaven! Uh... just a little correction, the correct title is "Yars' Revenge", not "Yar's Revenge". Kudos and keep 'em coming! :)
This game actually started out as a port of the arcade game "Star Castle". But HWS couldn't figure out how to recreate it on the 2600, so he changed it into this form and the rest is history.
I remember actually clocking this games score back in the day. Got to 999,999 and then clicked back round to zero! You get to a point pretty much in this video where it doesn't get any harder!
I don't remember the swirly thing in being able to change direction more than once when it attacks Yars, not even when you are in the Pink Barrier levels - so _what_ is the maximum number of times can Qotile change direction, when he is in his "swirly" form, in a single attack on Yars???
The effect of the safe zone was generated by the program reading its own code and assigning a random color to each "1" that was read from the 1's & 0's in the code.
I remember I've played that game as perfectly as you did, on the real console, but ended it onto a glitch in the neutral zone, while hitting the swirll in a precise spot, where my main character was. That was making crashing the game. Yar's Revenge is a real classic game.
How is the player timing several zorlon cannon shots knowing precisely when the swirl will fire? Is there some sort of pattern to how much time the swirl will wait before it fires? If so, what is it based on?
5:30- 6 something.. I dont think Ive ever hit that many Swirls in a row like you have. Thats pretty amazing , considering further in the game the swirls follow you really fast. Ive been able to get about as far as you have and Ive hit a lot of swirls, but not as many as you just did! Nice play!
Do the swirls attack you at a faster speed when you reach a certain level and/or scored enough points *_regardless_* on what you have the "A/B" difficulty switches set at there???
Lots of cheap shots from the cpu. I hate that when the cpu seems to get pissed when you are kickin ass in an old school game. Great job dude! Young kids dont know it took fuckin skill to master these old school games. Shit got too easy after the 8 bit era.
Something is off in the game play. Yar should get a missile when "eating part of the enemy shield or when touching the enemy before it goes into cannon mode. Also at some point after destroying all of the shield it does respawn.
Nope, what you described happens in easier game modes. In Ultimate Yar, you must touch the left edge of the screen to make the missile (called the Zorlon Cannon) appear.
There's an Easter egg in the code but it's a bit hard to trigger. It ends the game and displays HSWWSH on the screen along with your remaining lives. HSW is Howard Scott Warshaw, the game's programmer.
I loved the haunting sounds in Yar's Revenge. Great gameplay too.
someone should make a techno track from these sounds :)
Best Atari game, of all time
I got this game on my 12th birthday back in 1983, played it for months.
this is one of the best games ever made, pure art, fun, and immersion put together. Thank you, Howard Scott Warshaw.
Was my favorite 2600 game back then and still is.
Wow. Blast from the past. One of the first games I played on my Gemini.

They do read them and every now and then reply to some comments, especially Valis77 and some of the uploaders via the channel's account. ;)
Liked this game back in the day. Very original.

I like that game. Brings back memories.
NOTE: If your score is 150,000+ points, the quotile (Swirl) will track the yars down, moving in multiple number of directions. So Be VERY careful.

joust, and yars revenge are amazing
I played this old school arcades game. When i was a little young boy old school game still rule to this day
Impressive strategies. Excellent work. Escaped so many near certain deaths.

+John Smith I remember it well being able to change direction twice, if not three times!

Yar's Revenge is a real classic game.
Yes, that's right! Didn't know it was an Easter egg though.
Re-Uploaded in frame blended form. Should make more sense now as you can see everything.

I've looked up the lore of this game some days ago, and found out the reason why the Yars resemble common house flies.
I turned the score over so many times years ago. Now I'll be lucky to get past a few levels.
I remember the first time the swirl changed directions twice, I screamed...lol seeing it changed directions 3 times at 17:48 made me duck....lol 🕹😵
You sir, are awesome.

Waooo men, its one of my favourite games
Yar's Revenge Game Sound Effects Also Came From The Movie Explorers.
AWSOME! great game play!!!!!!!!
Have you tried the game from the IGN site MadMatty & World of Longplays?
I remember getting a million in this game, used the safe zone a lot.
When I was a kid, I was never able to get past the blue barrier levels
6:20
That was impressive!
how is it that you already have the 5 trons to charge up the cannon at the beginning of a level? Is it from shooting the swirl mid-air?
In some levels, you acquire the 5 trons as soon as the Qotile becomes a Swirl.
I could never figure out what youre supposed to do in this game!
What the heck is happening in this game? O can't figure it out

Daval Ddert that is true, coming from a 90s kid. I much prefer games from the 80s.
Nice shot at 6:22
why does the barrier disappear after grey? That's not supposed to happen.
I know... right...? (Shouldn't the barrier turn from grey to pink in colour when your score reaches 23,000 points???)
Yeah, there's another color.

It's not Stella because I used Stella when I recorded mine before.
@@ViddyOJames It turns Blue, then Pink.
Though I think it’s the player’s POV screen that prevents the shield being seen. XD
I plugged lots of quarters into in the 80's. Never really understood the point of it.

kevin12567 only if you have 5 trons but here sometimes they do that at the beginning of a level
this guy kicks some serious ass
Thumbs up if The Walking Dead brought you here.
yep brought me here :P i have this game and still play it sometimes :P
Guilty! I cracked up when Eugene explained the concept of the game, only people who had read the manual would've known it in that much detail.
figment1988 lol it sure did

Complete savage @ 16:08
wtf were the developers on acid when they made this!?!?
If any, they probably don't have much of a trip here. Especially when you see another one after watching gameplay from UnJammer Lammy.
