  • Can Mike Portnoy Execute Mike Mangini's Drum Part ?
    In this video, we dive deep into the epic journey of Dream Theater, one of the most iconic progressive metal bands. We explore the band's history, from its early days as Majesty, to the influence of its founder and original member, Mike Portnoy.
    Discover the reasons behind Mike Portnoy's departure from Dream Theater, his desire to explore new horizons, and the Grammy-winning era under Mike Mangini's drumming expertise. We discuss how "The Alien" earned Dream Theater their first Grammy in the category of "Best Metal Performance."
    The main question we explore in this video is whether Mike Portnoy, after 13 years away from Dream Theater, can perform Mike Mangini's drum parts. We emphasize that this is not a competition or comparison between two drumming legends, but a celebration of their unique talents.
    Join us in this musical journey and share your thoughts on the incredible contributions of Mike Mangini and Mike Portnoy to Dream Theater.

    I think he'd be able to play them for the most part, but there are specific sections of certain songs that he'll probably need to dumb down a bit. While I prefer Portnoy's drumming by a mile, it's undeniable that Mangini has the edge in terms of technical skill. His limb independence and accuracy are on a level above not just Portnoy, but 99% of all drummers.

    My thoughts on this: as a technical mangini is far beyond portnoy, so do I think portnoy will do manginis parts as is.. no. An example, when portnoy was playing with Derek Sherinian they did Atlantis which Virgil donati did drums on the recording, the way some of the drum parts are crafted are not in portnoys comfort zone, so he redid them in a way to make them comfortable to his style and still work for the song. I think he’ll do the same with manginis parts, anything that is outside his comfort zone he’ll redo in a way to make sense with his playing. Nothing wrong with that though.

      plus Portnoy has mentioned a couple of times that he is not that kind of drummer to play something as it is, to replicate drummings as it is, he'll do what he does best, to play in his own style that's as close as possible to the original.

    Every Musician puts their own stamp on things no matter what. I am not a fanboy of DT, Mangini, nor Portnoy, but I have been listening to some of their stuff again recently, and they both bring something the other doesn't have, and they both can perform at a very high level, but yes there are some things Mangini did that Portnoy will do differently. And after listening to a few tunes from both again, man Mangini is top 1% in tightness and ability...I am thinking if RUSH ever wanted to do something again, Mangini would be the perfect fit to replace the late great Niel Peart

    The game turned to Mike Portnoy. If before it was Mangini who needed to wear the shoes worn by Portnoy for 25 years, now it is Portnoy who needs to wear the shoes worn by Mangini for 13 years. Unlike Iron Maiden who only had 2 albums recorded by another musician until the return of the original singer, the same happened with Judas Priest, Dream Theater had 5 studio albums recorded, all of them excellent and one Grammy-winning song. It's a lot of history to ignore, so Mike Portnoy will certainly have to learn a little from Mike Mangini. It will be very interesting to see The Alien played by Mike Portnoy.

      They have a huge enough library already with Portnoy-drummed songs. So the setlists will probably contain majority songs he knows, with the addition of a few Mangini songs which Portnoy will play comfortably handle with enough practice. (in his style of course) Not to mention they will tour off a fresh batch of brand new songs on top of it. It's not like he's going to precisely try to play his parts note by note anyway. MP is a very smart and capable drummer, so all the haters can criticize all they want. I guarantee he will gel as if he never even left.

      Yes, I agree. I"ve been watching and listen Mangini's drumming skills in the last 13 years and I can tell you this (on my opinion), he has more speed / complex on the top on the drums. I've always thought, Portnoy's a liitle under on the top (i.e., toms, etc.), while he uses more double kicks as a supplement than Mangini. So...I don't know if Portnoy can copy Mangini's songs during their albums through 2010 - 2023 for the more explicated stuff. We'll never know until we hear it.

    The most likely scenario for DT’s future is that they will put together a setlist with the classics and a few of the tunes from the new album they are recording right now, unfortunately the mangini era will be hardly performed live because the fans want nostalgia and at the same time the band is getting older so it’s financially better for them to live off of their classics like most big bands do nowadays.

      It's true. I'm a huge Megadeth fan, have been since 87. Seen them a couple dozen times, at least once on every tour since then. But, that slowed down drastically since they essentially play the same set of songs on every tour. They are playing all the songs casual fans know, with a couple of newer ones. Many fans stopped listening after the 90's, even though they've put out great albums since.
      But, to appease a newer audience, they have to play a set list of their "hits." And being that they only play a hour, there is no room for songs for the hardcore fan. They ignore 3-4 albums completely and its ashame.
      Like you said, Dream Theater will play everything pre-2010, along with new material and ignore most of the last 13 years.

    Like others have said MP could do MM parts , but in his own way. From purely a technical point of view MM is on another level. His speed and coordination is very advanced , especially when you consider that he constantly executes his fills and grooves exactly, night after night when on tour. That takes some serious skills. Whether Portnoy can execute Mangini's drumming - frankly, I don't think so. I expect a DT that is more sloppy and with a Portnoy that is more concerned with his own show than getting the band to sound their best. In other words... I will very much miss Mangini in DT

  • @Masterlessmusic
    @Masterlessmusic 5 місяців тому +2

    I don't think he'll have too many issues. He's completely capable of execution of the parts. People quickly forget what Portnoy is capable of because he's a different type of drummer where he can be quite restrained at times and play in service of the composition over playing chops for chops sake.
    I think the technical challenge he faces is not whether he can play the parts or not. (frankly it's stupid to assume he couldn't, he's been doing this sort of thing since most of you were still spunk in your daddy's ball bag) Rather , I'd imagine the difficulty arises from the way he likes his kit setup Vs the way Mangini has his kits setup .
    So there's logistical complications you might say. This was also a challenge Mangini had to navigate coming into DT.
    So he'll do what both of them do which is to do his homework and work through the problems and setup a new kit that allows him to tackle Mangini's parts as faithfully as possible while allowing him to remain comfortable to perform in the way he likes to play .
    I think he'll love the challenge to be honest. It'll be fun. That's the sort of Conditions these sorts of players thrive in.

    Whereas if you have listened Mike Mangini even from way before Dream theater, he was always adapting and evolving to each band or their style and bringing creativity.

Dramatic turn of events and self-titled albums were the only ones I truly enjoyed Mangini's drumming, still complained about how weak the drum sound is, which was not a drumming issue it was recording or mixing issue. The albums released after these 2 albums, I think I'm going to blame Petrucci for that, it felt way too repetitive and very difficult to memorize. Portnoy, if he plays these songs live, he'll probably address this issue and attempt to create engagement with the songs.

Pretty much every member is 60 (heck Jordan Rudess is almost 70)...then again the Rolling Stones just released a new album and the members of that band are 80, so maybe, hopefully DT still has "plenty of gas left in the tank"

    Probably the only one to match Mike Mangini note for note on the drums has to be Marco Minnemann. In fact he was the drummer chosen to replace Mike Portnoy after the auditions, not Mike Mangini. Minnemann refused since he wasn't really keen on joining the band. He did this purely to test and have fun during the whole thing. Mangini was the second choice and the third choice was Darkane's drummer Peter Wildoer. As much prolific and highly technical as Mangini is, I would still rate Marco on a slightly higher level and it was evident that Dream Theater members thought so too. The man can play anything ranging from Carnatic Jazz to Death Metal (he toured with Necrophagist). He is also a multi-instrumentalist and a composer. No wonder James LaBrie remarked about Marco as being an absolutely phenomenal drummer. He has the same technical proficiency as Mangini while he plays with a lot of feel, soul and dynamics as Portnoy.

    Dangerous waters. The band had to be careful not to be hypocrites. Thet told all the auditioning drumners that MP's parts need yo be played pretty much the same as the records vecause they argued that is what cans expected to hear. If that argumebt remains true, then MP needs to be held to that same standard if considering playing MM's parts.

    I'm really looking forward to seeing how MP spares the parts written by MM, as MM kept skimping on the best parts of MP's drumming, such as classic fills, the use of certain effect plates, etc., thus often completely gutted the tone in most of the songs that MP felt perfect.

    There are a lot of questions that come across by fans and youtube influencers who do not know the history of DT. I will finish with this, Portnoy has 10 long play albums, with songs averaging 20 minutes in length each, plus, they intend to write a new album, and then tour. To ask if he will be able to play the Mangini era of music, THEY DONT NEED TO! With Portnoy, just with his catalog spanning from 1989-2009, they have far too much music to worry about that even within one show, even without new music coming up next year. The reviews that I have seen on the net are mind boggling. Trust me, if they did choose Mangini era music, Portnoy could handle it no problem, he has a photographic memory, anyhow, I find these to be silly questions. Think of it like this, David Lee Roth rejoined Van Halen in the mid 2000's, they played NO Sammy era music live, they didnt need to. cheers!

    • @Kevinacharles
      @Kevinacharles 6 місяців тому

      I think many of the fans would want to see Mangini era music. It would be an odd decision to just erase 13 years of DT history. They have played music from all of their albums, despite changing band members, so why would they stop now?
      Of course Portnoy will be able play the songs of Mangini, and like Mangini, I am sure he will interpret them in his own way.

    Silly question, asking it is don't kwowing the guy... Is Mangini execute well Portnoy's parts ? Well, every musician is different, you always play better something you create yourself. Portnoy will improve by learning songs from the last 13 years, i'm really curious to listen to his play on that.

  • @shanegriffin2215
    @shanegriffin2215 4 місяці тому +4

    No. As good as Portnoy is, He does not has the abilities to play Mangini’s parts note for note. They are very different players and their approach to drumming is very different. Dream Theater to my ears became a better band song wise with Mangini, but that is my opinion. I never was really into DT until he got into the band. But that is because I have always preferred Mangini’s playing over Portnoys. Everyone had their own opinion on this subject, but as a drummer myself, from a purely technique side of the drums, Portnoy is in for a lot of woodshedding. But, maybe he will play the material in his way. I wish him and the band the best.

    Cuando a Mangini le tocó hacer las partes de Portnoy lo hizo a la perfección, incluso al tiempo mejorando o incrementando la dificultad en algunas partes. Portnoy no es capaz de hacer eso ahora. Punto! Si te gusta más el estilo de Portnoy está muy bien, pero en términos concretos Mangini puede hacer cada una de las notas de Portnoy (inclusive con una sola mano) y viceversa no va a pasar.

    It’s a good question specially winning there 1st Grammy !!
    I believe that Mike will practice what mangini has recorded!! But I saw the band and I’m a huge fan and mangini didn’t play 110% on 80% of Portnoy recordings !!! They are both amazing artists and have a lot of respect towards each other!! Personally, what mangini has done since portnoy left , definitely was a big shoes to keep the band going!!
    Everyone has their own journey in life!! It’s like in the 80’s glam pop world when a singer does 1 or 2 albums and toured around the globe!! And now it’s a Solo career!!
    Few years pasts and , next the return to last band !!
    I definitely think that portnoy will smash it with ease because it’s Mike Portnoy!!!
    2 of the most amazing musicians in this genre who can play anything and 110% perfection!! Iv seen it happened in both artists with past projects and current!!
    Mangini with his incredible limbs speed that most drummers have trouble with 2 hands !! So what practice practice and more practice nothing is impossible for any artists in any type of instrument!!
    Keep on rocking and ❤
