    Gutted Mangini is no longer with them. I'm actually mourning the occurance....
    Ever since I heard his work with James's solo project in 2002 I've wanted to hear him with DT.

      He's the only one that wanted this gig. This is a fake audition. They filmed this to be a reality show that no one picked up. They wouldn't pick this guy if any of the other ones wanted the gig. You don't turn down Virgil, Marco, or Thomas.

      @@jackmakackov7077 "You don't turn down Virgil, Marco, or Thomas" Why can't you?
      Virgil - failed the chemistry test via the improvisational jamming. Technically deadly, but weak in the 'make it up live on the spot' part. He's also not 'nerdy' or 'geeky' enough in spirit - which I think DT wanted and needed. Virgil is a serious stiff dude. Almost too 'dark' for DT.
      Marco - kind of a 'hired gun' guy, like Steve Vai was on guitar in bands for years in his early career. Great for some dating, but not marriage 'until death do us part' which is what the band wanted and needed. Marco wasn't ready to settle down. Plus Marco is more silly fusion-rock-jazzy at his best (much better fit in Aristocrats). He's more a drummer for sessions and 'projects' - than jumping into a committed iconic classic progressive rock band gig. Marco had more seeds to sow in his longterm career. On a minor note, Marco doesn't project "serious metal" much, as a dude. He's kinda goofy - in his great way. I mean - a cookie monster shirt... LOL
      Thomas - same weaknesses in the chemistry test... just wasn't organically fitting into the DT style improvisations. They could feel it. Heck, I could feel it. It was like DT was jamming, and a great drummer was in the room playing ALONG to it... not ADDING to it, and making it stellar/better. Like Marco, Lang doesn't come off as 'metal enough' either.

    Portnoy is a great drummer but Mike Mangini is just on a different level. Every fiber of Mike’s being goes into preparing for his performances. That’s not to take anything away from Portnoy because he helped create the music that Mangini now plays but Mangini takes what Portnoy did and adds to it without changing the overall foundation of the music. It’s got to be an extreme compliment to be followed up by Mike Mangini of all people. He’s just incredible. I hear he’s a really nice guy as well.

Compairing to for example Portnoy and Minneman definetely faster and better one hand technique. But does that really count that much. What he lacks is the composing skills of those two other and also groove. Its of course a matter of taste but imo even though MM is amazing drummer I prefer Mp and Minneman much higher. And I think im not the only one. Those two have gathered honours and trophys in the drummer industry 10x more than Mangini.

    At 17.10 the change when Mangini hits the symbol and everyone just follows into that halftime jazz/blues Gary Moore type section is absolutely astounding. I think Petrucci and LaBrie have misread what makes their music great to fans. It seems like they went into the last two albums with a plan, and actually the music they write spontaneously is much better than the stuff that they plan. I love old DT when you didn't know where a new song or album was going. Metropolis or Octavarium or Train of Thought were all amazing because they were based off of jam sessions rather than going in with a preconceived concept for the most part. Even though Metropolis was based off the song it was jams around the feel of that song that the album was really based around. That's what the fans want, more shooting from the hip. When they play freely with no restrictions or plans these guys are the only fucking band that matters. Regardless of whether it's MP or MM playing the drums. Both these guys are incredible and it's actually really hard to choose between them. MP is my personal favourite, just because he's written some of the most satisfying drum parts I've ever heard (the fills on sacrificed sons are mind blowingly good - just one example in a sea of hundreds). But I'm hoping that they'll take to the new album in the same fashion as before and MM will likely surprise and astound us if they do.

      +SuperGeo1987 This is one of the best responses to the MPvMM debate. That being said, I joined them at ADTOE and then worked my way backwards... and then forwards with the self-titled album :D I agree with you in the sense that when I first started listening to everything, from WDADU to BCSL, and then ADTOE and DT, I had no idea how the albums would have sounded. Sure, I heard snippets of Fortune in Lies, Metropolis Pt. 1, Overture 1928, and On the backs of Angels, but the rest was a mystery. I'm happy with what happened then and now (despite "discovering" them so far into their career already), and I eagerly wait the next album, which has unfortunately been pushed back to early 2016.

      the biggest complaint people have with DT is the vocals, although the last albums his voice is more "warm" and nicer. in some of the previous albums James is, sad to say, utter crap and off key WAILING.

    • @TheTrevasaurusRex
      @TheTrevasaurusRex 7 років тому +2

      That's because he royally f'd up his throat. He got food poisoning and ruptured his vocal cords while puking. So there are a few songs on previous albums where he just struggles. He's been sounding normal (at least to my ear) on the last three albums.

      Unfortunately the new albums doesnt sound like this at all. The chemistry is great, but after they writing some songs, turns out petrucci and rudess take the lead, mangini is not involved that much. Even on the astonishing, they write it REMOTELY plus petrucci have the biggest piece on writing and that sound so wrong.

    21:38 Awesome fill that perfectly fit the tone and the attitude of the session at that moment. I have listened to Dream Theater in the past and was always impressed and while they ARENT the same without Mike Portnoy I think they shouldn't be. Mike Mangini is a different drummer with an intensity that I love. Ive seen him live 2 times and on both occasions he was a mind blowing drummer to watch. Full of fire and passion for the art and so musical as an artist. I love how Dream Theater feels now. More Mature maybe is the word im thinking. They have grown through this transition with Mike Mangini keeping time in the back and I think they are better than ever honestly.

    Mike mangini is hands down one of the best drummers on the planet.. Mike mangini, Marco minneman, Mike portnoy, Pete wildoer, George kolias, and Thomas Lange just to name a few are the greatest drummers to ever play a drum kit.. all of their styles and playing techniques are just phenomenal and brutal beyond belief man.. I could sit and watch any one of these players I mentioned here all day long and not get bored.. especially Mike mangini.. he's incredible.. dream theater couldn't have picked a better member to play the drums for their band.. period.. he fits like a glove man.. perfection at it's finest.. thanks for sharing this video.. it's amazing..there wasn't this much jam time on the regular episodes.. I'd like to see all of the drummers do the improv with them.. that'd be awesome.. thanks again.. cheers..
