Welcome back to DT, MP! 🥁
Mike Mangini is one of the sloppiest drummers of all time. Really held back the newer DT albums from being legendary status. Now with Portnoy back, SO IS THE BAND BABY WOOOO
I love how Mike knew he absolutely needed the cowbell at 8:09 for Twisted Sister, so you can actually tell that someone is holding the cowbell for him instead of it being mounted.
Hahh, good catch :)
Ghost bell 👻
A cowbell on the fly
Didn't even notice it was handheld haha
Needs more cowbell
That of "Honor Thy Father" is the best intro ever conceived by human ingenuity from the beginning of the story of percussions.

Another life after The Prisoner
Thank you my friend. You are a friend!
4:47 Another life (Iron Maiden)
another life is a great drum intro!
I’m a simple man: I see Mike Portnoy in a thumbnail. I click and watch. 👍
Aye it's @MetalJesusRocks
Sup dude. Like your content
Me too he is legend
Same bro
Don't we all?
A quick correction: The song at 4:47 is "Another Life" and not "Run to the Hills" as described. 😉
Yes Man, i noticed that too hehehe...Another Life is a killer songs
Damn straight my man!!
@@RSVskynet KILLER song. (I see what you did there)
God damn, Portnoy still has it. It's unreal to see him cycle through so many different songs flawlessly.
A fan, a master, a real rock star and a humble man.
What a talented drummer.
Finally, finally, finally a drummer mentions Clive Burr! That guy is so overlooked and underappreciated and it's a flerken shame. His playing with Maiden was like a human metronome. I love Nicko equally but they are very different in every way. RIP Clive Burr
agreed, not near enough credit. Check out Junna, playing Genghis Khan, well worth it.
Clive Burr also played drums in Praying Mantis, another underrated band.
Nicko may have been technically the better drummer, but Clive was creative, & more “metal”
Clive Burr was a bad baaaaaaaaaaaad man!
Yeah, too bad he sucked at playing his drum parts - I barely recognized them.
Love the shout-out to Charlie Benante. Feel he does not get the credit he deserves. Father Benante is a world-class drummer.
Charlie and Anthrax are way too underrated
Charlie is fantastic. One of a kind. The guy also plays guitar and piano! What a talent
@Maddog Jones agreed they're a part of the big 4 and yet they're still somehow underrated
Best of the big 4 and most of metal
@@MaddogJones Charlie is Anthrax
Yes!!! Mikkey Dee's intro on "Welcome Home". Very cool he mentioned that one. The drumming on that whole album is sooo good.
Mikkey's work with King Diamond is some of the finest drumming I have ever heard. It was such an important part of the greatness around that band. Abigail... omfg
I’m so impressed that he called out the De La Soul sample. Not only was it unexpected coming from a rock drummer, I also wasn’t aware that it was a sample of Bonham, despite being a fan myself of both songs for decades.
True musicians appreciate all music 🤘
Mike is right up there in legendary drummer hall of fame status with all these iconic drummers, and yet he's equally as much of a music geek as we are!
He's also the absolute biggest asshole in the music industry. Don't meet this guy if you want to still have any positive feelings about him. Dream Theater guys deserve a congressional medal of freedom for putting up with him as long as they did.
@@jackmakackov7077 Yeah you're definitely talking to the wrong person. I actually have met him in person, rather recently actually, and he was the nicest guy, albeit a bit tired from the show he had just done in Anaheim. If you judge people purely on their business faults, then everyone is an asshole.
His ghost notes are so good, man’s a machine.
He is clearly a machine of power!!!
Check out Gavin Harrison. He is the ghost notes god
@@kunalkumar8217 Oh yes !!!! This guy too is a killer!
He’s crazy good at everything. His Ringo and Bonham imitations are spot on. The way he times his hits changes completely from the metronome accurate style he normally does when he plays their parts. (There are longer examples elsewhere on UA-cam)
I was just going to say the way he played Rock N Roll with no ghost notes at all would have made Bonzo roll in his grave
I'm so glad he's back in DT.
For the first time in about 10 years, I'm excited for what's to come from them.
It’s one thing to play non-stop fast, but to also be able to play rhythmic fills, this guy has the chops. Mike is naming all these legendary drummers, when he in fact is a legend himself.
Class act
At 4:48, he plays another life by Iron Maiden not run to the hills
I'm a guitarist, but whenever I see Mike I click "HellYeah". What a drummer :)
Mike Portnoy Plays His Favorite Drum Intros 2331pm 1.3.23 found it!! scratch acid: HOLES 32mins 19secs into the album: gods favourite dog. you need to play this particular version due to generic scratch acid compilations featuring a lesser version. the drum intro is pretty cool. i had it rattling about my head when i saw this skit... though couldnt recall which piece of vinyl it aired on... ahahahahahaha... yeah. erm. that was all i had to say.
He's the only drummer whose parts give me chills. The breaks in "The Count of Tuscanny" are breathtaking.
His drumming on that song is fantastic, filled with good taste!
yesssssss dudeee. That song is legendary
Amazing musically, but that song truly has 🐎 💩 lyrics
@@heed17no it doesnt. Its telling a story.
Never forget, Panic attack as well. Also In the Name of God, and The ministry of lost souls
The man is a legend. He plays this most difficult intros like nothing.
Yes , he finally returned to DT
When I saw the title of the video, I instantly thought of "Honor thy Father". Definitely my favorite.
My favorite drummer always will be Ian Paice. And he have so many iconic intros too, like Fireball or Pictures of Home are so awesome.
I love Paice, his snare is amazing, all those rudimentary fills, the sound.... And one of my favourite songs is Burn, all those fills, it's like they went into the studio and told him "alright Ian you can go crazy on this one" and he replied "ok, solo every bar. "
I'havent read your note, dear friend ... i completely agree with you ... I've posted a comment up in italian , giving same examples you wrote here ...
He isn't human! I'm so glad he's back home with Dream Theatre!!
Mike’s name belongs with all of those he just listed. Such a gifted drummer. I never get sick of hearing him play.
6 o’clock man…what a badass song…
Ringo, Keith Moon
John Bonham - Good times bad times, Rock and Roll, The C runge, When the Levee Breaks, The Rover, Fool in the Rain
2:50 - Neil Peart - Lakeside park, 2112: Temples of Syrinx, YYZ
4:15 - Clive burr - Run to the Hills, The prisioner, Another life
5:00 - Nicko McBrain - Where eagles dare
5:25 - Lars - Whiplash
6:10 - Charlie Benente - Subjugator, Metal Thtashing Mad
6:42 - Dave Lombardo - Criminally Insane, Angel of death
7:44 - Mikkey dee - Welcome home (King Diamond)
8:07 - A.J. Pero - We're Not Gonna Take It
8:43 - Dream Theater - 6: 00 , Honor thy father,
9:30 - Avenged sevenfold - Welcome to the family
10:06 - Winery dogs - Gaslight
@Fernando Magalhães "Jon" lolz
@@briandrum1 Thanks lol
Nem todo herói usa capa
obrigado! honor thy father e six o'clock são realmente sensacionais
The last one sounds a lot similar to Under A Glass Moon
Cozy Powell - Stargazer by Rainbow....howdja miss that one Mike? One of the most iconic intros of all time dammit!
Apparently not one of his favorites… I expected Ian Paice and either Fireball or Pictures of Home or both but those are obviously not among his favorites either…
Oh he loves it. Dream Theater did a cover of it on Mike's final album w/ the band. I'm sure there's many more he would put on the list.
Will never understand the need for comments like this.
Yes... I expected Stargazer to be on this one too.
Damn ! This 6.00 o’clock intro ! I miss it 🤯
Damn, this is the most prepared I've seen a musician for one of these videos.
he didn't prepare. he is just that good
Mike Portnoy has been a huge influence on me as a drummer over the years.
It made me so damn happy to hear him play the intros to "Honor Thy Father" and "Welcome to the Family" again after so many years. ☺
6:00 was the very first song I ever heard from DT and I was immediately obsessed.
I was 13 when Piece of Mind came out and I literally fell in love with drumming when I heard that opening fill of Where Eagles Dare. I gad to learn it and play it. I saved all my paper route and lawn cutting money and borrowed the rest from my dad to buy my first drum kit... Never played pro but always had a drum kit and still play today. Nicko McBrain, Lars Ulrich and Scott Rockernfield were my initial drum hero's, they still are.
Not a big Lars fan, but the other two are true greats
scott🤙🏻 awsome feel one of my favorites very underated
Scott always seems to get overlooked. The guy is incredible.
very sweet the guy has such an amazing feel and groove in his playinh and his so freaking tight its not always about drills and techniques
@@jaybecker9842 Listen to And Justice for All just for the drumming and tell me Lars isn't great.
Instant Thumbs up. I’m not even a drummer but Mike is my musical hero
Same here! He's f.n...Bad ass!!!!🤟🤘🤟🤘
Ditto!
Seconded. I mean, i play guitar lolz
@R Neumann as a bass and guitar player, Portnoy taught me so much about rhythm and feel, how to count etc. ... I actually own all his instructional dvds lol
🤘
That intro to awake is so epic
It CANNOT be understated how HUGE that 6:00 intro was for me, I was at the right place and right time having just exhausted my Rush phase and it changed everything when I heard it!!!!
I might be biased saying this as Awake is my favorite album of all times in any genre, but to me the intro of 6:00 is the greatest drum intro ever.
idk....something about seeing him play dream theater is soooo refreshing
Mike's recall is just phenomenal. His drum sound is fantastic!
Awesome mention to Mikkey Dee ! Welcome Home is amazing and the drumming... fantastic !
Mike is undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers in music history... the second youngest person (after Neil Peart) to be inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame
with his dream theater intro.....he kill almost any drummer....and thats just with the intro
Have both of you never heard of Vinnie Paul? Pretty sure he's better than anyone you think is better. And that's facts.
@@GPmayne HAHAHAHSHHAHSH cant be serious?!
@@sebg2086 prime joey jordison destroys portnoy as well
@@sebg2086 yup. 6'oclock intro is hard AF to keep in time and not sounding stiff. In my teens, when I was obsessed w/ Mike's playing, I spent a lot of hours, days, weeks to get that to sound natural.
Wow! Mike Portnoy is inspired by drummers before him, and even by drummers coming after him. This shows that he's the type of person who is always eager to learn.🙌
Nice to hear Clive Burr getting a mention as he very rarely does and came up with some tasty iconic parts!
I Liked him more than Nico, much deeper feel sounding drummer.
HELLO, Im from Czech Rep. (Czechoslovakia) When I begun play on drums, my teacher told me about Mike Portnoy. I listen him from my 14 years old. . It change my view on drums. It is 16 years ago. Good bless ✝️✝️✝️ Mike Portnoy 🥁 FUCKING ANIMAL ON DRUMS ♥️♥️♥️ , BADASS
Those drums sounds so good!
I love that Mike still has such enthusiasm for the drums and music. He sounds like a 16-year-old that still loves playing!
This guy is such a cool dude. He just loves the drums and we love him for it
Glad he's giving Mikkey Dee and Clive Burr some love. My two favorite drummers from the days.
Love Welcome Home by King Diamond, happy it made the list. A personal favorite of mine whom
I don't think gets enough credit is Kirk Arrington but hey, I'm not a drummer.
Brian Downey of THIN LIZZY always gets left out. Why?
He like the living holy book for rock drummers. The great and the only Mike Portnoy.
the first song of the first album of liquid tension experimient sent me to the moon when i first heard it and still do. such a great guy and incredible musician, long live MP
Such a legend! He's the best you can think of for such a concept! He's a library, monster drummer and he's so passionate and fast! Love that beast! Thank you Mike for everything I owe you!
I feel like i can connect better to his musical genius when he is on a hello Kitty drum kit
LMAO
He just seems like such a cool, down-to-Earth guy but he can play fuckin anything. Huge respect to Mike Portnoy
I will never get tired of listening to Mike talking about his favorite drummers and hearing him play
I miss my all time favourite - painkiller!! For me,by far the best drum intro ever!! Can not get enough of it!
I love hearing from MP on this channel! He’s such a music fan and has a good mix of technical ability and street cred that he’s a reliable historian for most of this stuff. Plus, he’s really fun!
Being a guitarist.. My love for drums was because of Mike Portnoy.. According to me he is the current drumming legend.. I still get excited seeing a post that includes him.. You're the best..
Mike Portnoy, the one and only! I realy love this guy and his sound, a killer machine! Portnoy and Porcaro are the best "ghost note" maker
This is great, Mike, thanks for sharing -- you will become a legend among them.
Yes! Mikkey Dee! Great drummer. He later drummed as kind of replacement for other more famous bands...but his work on those early King Diamond albums is fantastic!
His work on Don Dokkens solo album was great also.
amazing intros
watching mike do welcome home intro was just AMAZING !!!
So great watching him geek out over his favourite parts and having fun.
Hearing you play Bonham really adds to the appreciation of how good he was. As a guitarist I always said you can have an average guitarist with a great drummer and have a great band, you can have a great guitar player with an average drummer and have an average band. Drummers truly make or break a band to me.
Every time.
He didn't exactly capture the spirit of Bonham…..
Man - I could watch this for hours 😊
One of the humblest drummers ever. He wrote some of the most iconic intros ever and he just played 4 of them.
That’s Mikey. ❤️
Love it!!!! It's amazing how he's able to play so many DIFFERENT drum intros without hearing the music. Insane! Thanks for posting!
09:08 Honor Thy Father. My favorite Portnoy intro of all!! 03:29 Peart - YYZ (those fills, especially the first fill Mike demonstrates @ 03:47, is to this day, my favorite Neal Peart fill ever.) Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction - the album opener (RIP Nick Menza) - Skin O' My Teeth! Also includes my favorite Megadeth guitar solo (Marty Friedman). My favorite 80s intro is a simple one, yet MASSIVE! Queensryche's title track, "Empire". That snare is like a shotgun!! Vinny Paul's intro to Pantera's "5 Minutes Alone". So many great intros!!
gotta love how he couldnt play the double bass on honor thy father though but a few seconds earlier perfectly played 6 o clock
seeing where his strenghts are hehe
Fastest 11 minute video on UA-cam.
Now that's 11 minutes I WILL get back... Over and over.
Thanks Mike.
That 6:00 intro 🔥
Mike's knowledge and skill are incredible. Just saw him with the Dogs and he was great.
It is always fun to watch Mike play and tell anything, he is professional in that.
Portnoy is such a beast, and as influential as any of the guys that inspired him during the years.
A true metal legend. One of the best drummers of all time! And of course he has absolutely impeccable taste 😁🤘
Exactly! As every great musician.
Need to correct that to one of the best metal drummers.
And you MIke, are many people's drum hero.. Thanks for this video 😄👍
The guy that defined my taste in music for over a decade and is still a referent for me. Thanks, Mike!!🤘🤘
I don't even like Dream Theater, but it is a real pleasure to hear him play. Such a fantastic drummer.
I wish downvotes could be seen on youtube
Mangini is a beast too
I haven't listened to much new DT since he left. It just lacks him. Mangini is a beast but his playing just tastes off to me. Minnemann might have been a better replacement for my taste.
Same. Thank god Liquid Tension exists.
@@falsemcnuggethope But…The Aristocrats!
Painkiller has my personal favourite drum intro, maybe even fave intro to any metal song. And to think that Judas Priest almost didn't go with Scott Travis because he's American.
Love them fills a great collaboration of my favorite drummers RIP the Professor 🤘
Just saw you guys at the Newton theater, NJ.
I can’t say enough, the Winery Dogs blew me away.
Ty
Geddy and Alex are getting "itchy"and talking about touring again as Rush !!!
I hope to God they are talking to you Mike because "Everyone" knows that you are the guy for the Part !! They know you know each Rush song and would play them as they should be !!!
Say Yes Please !!! 👍🥁🎶
Mike Portnoy is so humble. This guy is a beast! Sooooi great!
Amazing as always!! By far my all time favorite drummer... I wish I could have him record on a project with me!! What a gem Mike is!
And then there is you mikeeeee!! You’re up there with all of those legends ❤❤
It's amazing how versatile this man is. He can literally play anything. He was the soul of DT, and as much as I like MM's drumming, MP just has this "joy" that is so evident in his playing, especially the live stuff.
I've been lucky enough to see Mike play with most of the bands he augments so well, and I hope to see more. I'm so happy that he still works with everyone (except 𝘰𝘯𝘦 certain individual) from DT, those guys have so much history and friendship, it really shines through when they work together. A more down to earth, unaffected and humble man you will not meet.... except ME, of course, I'm so humble that I tell everyone I meet how humble I am!😂
Is that one individual the yelping, screeching moron who has ruined his voice?
@@ScottAndersonYT That'd be the one. I do admire the rest of the guys in DT for sticking with him, but you have to draw the line sometime. Surely there comes a time when you gotta realise that it's well past time to call it quits. Autotune will get your tone right, but it doesn't fix everything.
Mike Portnoy es uno de los mejores bateros.. super versatil.. te toca cualquier estilo.. Bruuuutal!
To be able to recall and approximate all of these classic drum intros is pretty amazing.
Mike Portnoy forever!!! Always amazed with his intros and fills!
Glad he added “6:00” and “Honor Thy Father.” They would have been on my list even if another drummer had been doing this video.
If Rush ever come back, they should hire Mike Portnoy as their drummer
Him or Danny Carey
Hopefully rush never comes back 🙏🏻
@@iLLuzion1st why tho, they’re the best band on earth
Big nope
Gavin Harrison
In the 80's and 90's i listened to Richie Kotzen, Billie Sheehan and Dream Theater. Now there is The Winery Dogs. How crazy is that. Great intros and fills Mike.
Glad to see Portnoy is still a beast behind a drum kit. Love it!!
Man, I haven't seen a single person mention Danny Carey... Him and Neil Peart are probably my 2 favorite drummers ever
Same. Even Gavin Harrison
Literally any Tool related video is going to be nothing but people declaring Danny the GOAT.
Danny blows Mike away.
@@hinjurock70 facts lol.
@@colinburroughs9871 because he is. Portnoy comes nowhere even close to Carey's level. Carey is in a level of his own!
Portnoy é muito divertido de assistir e extremamente técnico ao mesmo tempo, combinação fatal dos grandes heróis da música.
When i first started playing drums when I was a kid, it was because of you mike, back in 94 when I first heard the Awake album, so Thank You 😊
Love the intro to 6:00 … so glad that Mike included that one along with so many classics!
4:47 is Another Life, not Run to the Hills
Best thing Loudwire has done in, like, forever
Loved that you filled in for AJ & twisted Sister ! Thank you
Got to see The Winery Dogs this Spring. What a treat!! If you can..go see them. Outstanding.🍷🎸🥁🎤
