- Here is the full making of our Hunger Games project. It took about 9 months to complete because of delays and other hickups but its finally done and we are proud to show off how we built it!
Apologies for the video being too long but there was no way to cut anything out.
In this video you will see Taki Tsonis and Dave Dawson. Unfortunately I am always behind the camera.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed building it. You can also view the full story and updates at this link goo.gl/oi54k
Filmed, Directed and Edited by Dimitri Kambas - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
All 8 P metallicas are doing very well. They have molted about 4 times each and are all living together. They love the enclosure and come out of their hides and are very aware of the roaches in tank.
where can I buy P Metallicas?
Lelouch Lamprouge The Spider Shop Has Some In Currently If Your From England.... I Would Suggest Getting A Juvi Or Adult Though.
Lelouch Lamprouge We sometimes get them in stock and usually cheaper than anywhere else in Europe
+Tarantupedia™ How much did you invest on the construction of 8 of your P. Metallica enclosure?? Very nice enclosure btw :)
+Tarantupedia™ Also, i am guessing two of your metallicas turned out becoming mature males is the reason why you said 8 right??
So far it has not been a problem we have not lost any of them. There are plants, rocks, vines and a huge piece of wood in the water, so they could easily climb out and a kind of river bank so i doubt it will be a problem.
Very cool project. Also very interesting they may have been catching the fish. I would love to have something like this to study. It would be cool to catch one of them fishing.
Great work! My favourite T! I wish all the best for the success of this vivarium!
Inspiring work, well done!
I just want to say that is freaking awesome !!! Didn't know Pokies can communal like that, always seen as separated due to cannibalism.
Wow. Compliments for the terrarium!
INCREDIBLE! I've always wondered if a waterfall would work for a T terrarium. Great job, I can't wait to hear all about how it goes as they grow, etc., so please do a lot of follow ups! :) wow
Thanks for the comments guys. So far everything is going great, plants are growing, fish are happy. The P metallica are also doing great. They are currently living in the following groups: 3 are living together in the small cracks at the top, 4 are together also high up but on the drift wood they have webbed up nicely the other 3 are alone in their own hides. After a good month they are alive and fat! We have provided lots of food that is running around all over.
this is fantastic!
Still a very cool project, and a great documented case study :)
Any update of this communal?
Wow.Awesome. Great job. Will definitely try a small version of this for my Metallica when I get it.
Great Video
I never knew that poecilotheria metallica could be kept communally
Impressive!
The setup looks very attractive - and I am fascinated to know if it was a success. I am less interested in the communal aspect and more by the fact that this artificial habitat is nothing like the habit in which they come from. So did the spiders thrive?? The real habitat is essentially hillside dry monsoon forest, which means very wet for a few months and then increasingly dry for much of the year.
Experiment was a success but the maintenance did cause us some frustration. The idea was to replicate the wet season with the sprinklers but again too much manual maintenance. Overall was a fun project…
wauwwwww amazing its looks so great guys :D
wow amazing
Amazing
I cant find the video update on this species. I was watched it few years back but now I cant find it. Where is it? Is it deleted?
Most tarantulas can trap a layer of air around their bodies very effectively and can be submersed in water for a prolonged period of time.
Looks like a great set up for poison dart frogs. Wonder if the exo terra started leaking. Had two that wouldnt hold past certain point and no I didnt fill it past the doors.
After watching this I had to sub. I need to build one of these for my pokies. Fantastic work guys :)
Any update for this awesome terrarium... ❤ how are the pmettallica after few yrs?
Wow super nice.. boss..
so 5 years later, how did this turn out? did any die? can you make a follow up video?
Any up to date videos on this ?
Woow ! A new perfekt Home. Verry verry wonderfull
WOW!
I thought these tarantulas couldn't be housed communally? How did you guys do it?
I would like an update video. I didn't know this species tolerated communal living.
Maybe some Springtails would be a good addition to this enclosure?
cool video
hey I wanted to do something like this . how big of a tank did you use ? I'm just wanting to have 2 females . thank you
nice terra dude ... 👍👍
is this the ideal habitat for the metallica ??
All the comments on this are pissing me off. I understand you are all just warning him, but you dont need to keep reminding him that its bad. In the end its his tank and his tarantulas. He can do what he likes with them.
I know this comment is a month old but that like saying animal abuse is okay because it is their pet so they can do what they want with it, the first thing that should always be taken into account is the well being of the animal. People are just giving this video stick for the sake of the animals living conditions.
Have you seen the natural habitat that Poecilotheria metallica comes from? Please have a look. I would like to hear your comments after you have done so. You will be surprised.
I personally like your setup very much so I was commenting on behalf of the people who thought otherwise as the original comment seemed a bit one sided. I am not that much of a Poki guy so undoubtedly your knowledge of the species is far superior to that of my own. Through my experience of tarantula husbandry I frequently hear the topic of communal Ts and whether they are right or wrong, I personally think they are fine so long as sufficient space is provided as you have done so. I think you may have misinterpreted my comment as it was of no criticism towards you, I felt that the original comment was very narrow minded and I apologies if you saw it in another manner. Also for the most part the natural habitat of a poki metallica is up a tree, not at the side of a waterfall. i still think its a really nice setup though.
Tarantupedia™ Given its an exo terra with lots of ventilation i can't see the humidity being an issue,Its more about thriving then surviving when comparing captivity to wild habitats, way I see it yes it was risky using such a big enclosure but i don't understand all the animal cruelty comments,im guessing they are coming from know it alls who keep their spiders in $1 tubs
any blueprints ?
Any video update?
Omg Iv Watched This Around A Year Ago And Come Back And I Finding It even More Amazing Now!!!! LOL Anyone Know What Size Exo-terra This Is?
nice!!!! :D
Please, can you make a new Vid of the Communal?
your Tank is the most beautiful, I´ve ever seen. It would be very interesting how it looks like now :)
bellissimo, sono estasiato
And you guys make Best Terrariums :D
The only way to have a successful long term communal of this species is to raise them together in a small enclosure so they get used to the constant touching until they become sub-adults. Then its even trickier as they will want their own retreats. Good luck but I for see some deaths in your future.
Hows the inhabitants after 6 years?
The Hunger Games - Best Movie !
Wow looks amazing. Wonder what is total cost of this project.
Total cost was around $500 a good friend provided us the 10 P metallica at no cost. You can read the full story with pictures here tarantulas.co.za/forum/show-and-tell/53353-hunger-games-poecilotheria-metallica-communal
The waterfalls isn't the problem (for me), it's the introduction of the b. lateralis. Those roaches smell. I'd prefer lobster roaches for pokies.
Is was thinking the exact same thing actually. But still an awesome project (but darn expensive if it should go wrong). ;-)
Could you guys make a new video for updates? Great Enclosure
How are today this terrarium? There is a video showing them adult there?
Amazing and wonderful setup. Congratulations.
It is doing great. There are 7 alive and 1 adult male living in the tank now. I will need to take a new video.
Tarantupedia™ An update video would be great
I thimk the best what I ever seen..
Awesome setup, good work. To all the fools commenting negatively, do you even know what the natural habitat of P metallica looks like? I mean surely you can't be that dumb??? They have evolved within it for a good few years without you setting up their environment for them lol. Research before you comment.... Tarantulas don't just exist in your bedroom terrariums kids ;)
amazing...n ignore the haters...sumone always knows n does thing better but in reality they dnt kno shit or even own a t...i have a communal of 7 p. vittatas n doing great...i wish i can do metallicas but to expensive for me lol ..would like a update vid ...
This enclosure is an interesting idea, but there are several problems with it. First is that tarantulas are easily drowned if they fall into water. Second is that the rocks used for the terrestrial area on the bottom of the tank look sharp and abrasive and is dangerous considering that tarantulas are very fragile. And finally P Metallica's are fast and considerably defensive so, why are you using your fingers to coax them into the enclosure. Like I said, the project is interesting and ambitious but these problems are way too significant a threat to the spiders.
Lol, do you even know what the natural habitat of P metallica looks like? I'm sure they have evolved within it for a good few years. Research before you comment.... Tarantulas don't just exist in your bedroom terrariums pal ;)
+tarantulaguy1998
Drown, really?
You obviously don't know much about their natural habitat ( they live in an area with annual flooding, they live in a very water present environment) and on top of that tarantulas can swim (some have even been reported to be able to be submerged for over an hour before needing to surface for oxygen)
2. rocks are a bit sharp?
You mean the rocks he put soil over? or the ones that actually emulate the natural environment that these spiders are from? so are you saying, that this spider, that has survived in a similar environment for hundreds of years, who has also spent thousands of years evolving to adapt to this type of environment to then live in it for hundreds of years with out problems. is NOW going to have an issue with it?
3. and he obviously didnt have much of an issue with using his finger. at the end of the day, its HIS finger that will get bit. and it did not. So at this point your needlessly throwing out unnecessary pokes at him haha.
"too significant a threat to the spiders" --- because pokies didnt live for HUNDREDS of years, with water/rocks/trees/fish AND having natural predators(which they do not have in this environment, the only thing they have to fear is jumping to their death ,which if they do it here, imagine in the wild jumping out of a 50FT tree to the rocks at the bottom,)
Are they catching the fish? :) Cause that would be awesome. I heard Avicularias can swim and Haplopelmas can be drowned like for an hour without suffocating so I don't think drowning is a problem like somebody here suggested. Good luck with the project, very neat.
Initially had about 20 small fish. Now only 3 are left! I must admit we had issues with the pump sucking too hard and about 6 fish died for that reason but slowly they got less without finding any of them dead or floating. To be honest I believe that they might have eaten some fish but I have not witnessed it myself.
Haha..cool :) Well obviously if you couldn't find them they must have been eaten, I hope they were :) it would be cool if you could make a webcam live stream out of there (or maybe just snapshots every few seconds/minutes), I think many people would take interest in watching these pokies..or shoot them nonstop for few days (offline) and then see what is really going on and make a youtube video out of that..it would be very educating and just great.
I have 2 webcams in the tank and do live hagouts every now and again. Can get a little boring but the nice thing is that it records for 4 hours and you get to view on youtube. I will do one today again keep an eye out for it.
Great. I just didn't see any link for it. Will certainly do. What is your time zone? I would like to watch the spiders at night if that is possible. Usually that's where the action is ;)
Tank is at my office so I do things remotely. Its a bit dark forgot to add the one light but worth a shot :)
But what you do when they grow up?
Oh sure they're very cute at that size LOL
Can someone explain it to me? Nice video and enclosure but, you want to see the Pokies kill themselves or what?
no precisan tanta humedad , en cuanto a las piedras de colores no las recomiendo para nada. y hay que estar atento a la alimentacion porque de tener hambre se comen entre ellas
please fix your contrast
I wish you understood what it's like for a T to get wet/sprayed... This is an awesome design... For a gecko. No T should live in this in my opinion with that high a humidity and at the risk of them getting sprayed... It's just going to stress them out, all their hairs are practically nerves, when they're sprayed it's like all their senses are being screwed with and it's extremely stressful... Imagine being in a dark room with a jet engine and someone poking you all over with tiny hot needles.
thank god you are a T, didn't knew T can go on youtube and do comments :D
Doesn't look like there's a shortage of water in Andhra Pradesh, India. LOL. (www . newsreporter . in / flood-situation-grim-in-andhra-pradesh-40222) Which is incidentally coastal. I think this is a fascinating project and don't understand all the hate. Then again, the hobby always did seem rife with know-it-all types completely bankrupt of social skills. I'm willing to bet most of them don't even know the entire natural habitat this species shares is about 40 squares miles in size; Total. A heavily fragmented 40 miles at that and they have shown no inclination in nature to branch out of this area over the last 100 years despite the availability of neighboring land while the current habitat is logged out forcing them to share trees. And yet; They don't leave. But what do I know? This is clearly animal cruelty! Free food, water, and no free roaming predators! It's terrible! Hahaha.
Well said
I'm torn between thinking this is a great idea and a bad idea haha. A bad idea because they're old world, so having a tank where you're going to have to do a lot of maintenance and messing around the tank, at least by the water area with the fish, seems dangerous considering their speed and their venom potency. Then on top of that, that much water in an enclosure when most people won't even put a full bowl but prefer sponges or crystals to prevent drowning? Also, the having MULTIPLE P.Mets in there.. Are they all the same sex? Or are you planning on that being a breeding ground essentially? As big as that enclosure is, I can't see that many being comfortable in there as adults.
But at the same time. Bioliving vivariums are great ideas, especially when they're this gorgeous and big. And we usually stray from big areas of water because we paid money for them and want to avoid danger at all costs but uhh.. tarantulas rarely drown in the wild. They know what water is.
Either way. Amazing work. I'm looking forward to trying to recreate it in the future for something of mine. Not exactly sure what yet. Possibly a much smaller version for my P. Met I suppose.
Also, do you have any recommendation for different fish? The bioliving vivarium I'm making is to be what most people use a saltwater fish tank for in their living area. It's essentially my aesthetically pleasing piece in the living room to show the pride of my hobby. So if possible, I would like an assortment of attractive fish, or at least something a bit more pleasing to the eye than these. How did you come to choose these?
What was the ratio of sexes? and how is it running now?
2 have died they seemed to be sick or weak. At the moment it looks like we have 5 females and 3 males. Males are much smaller than females. So far its running smoothly they are very happy and have started using the whole tank.

That's a shame about the 2 that passed but these things happen. Was wondering also how often you clean the enclosure, is it fairly high maintenance or does it sustain its own environment? Would very much like to see another video at some point, should you find the time of course. As I am also interested in setting up a colony at some point, I think observing the communal behaviors would hold great value to me as an entomologist.
***** We only clean the glass, it gets very dirty. everything else sustains itself. We will definitely make another video once there is good footage to capture becuase at the moment everything is incredibly boring and you only see movement every now and again.
My fav T, however i see problems in the future with this setup, other T's are siding with other T's there going to become territorial. The females im sure will start to cannibalise some of the smaller males, and the waterfall is to deep and large if one would fall in. However i hope none of that happens and good luck:)
Ohhhh i wish i ahd the money to make such a gorgeous tank... im getting my 1st OW T next week... its a Poecilotheria Metallica so i was doing my research on it when i stumbled here.. simply stunning... does the pokies eat the isopods too? is it self sustaining? what does the roaches eat? do you add roaches weekly? what do you do if a female bears a fertilized eggsac?
How are they faring now?
good enclosure 1 like and I subscribe
Colors too saturated
ur seriously putting metalicas in that tank ? go buy some H.Gigas they literaly would dive in the water and catch the fish!, metalica wont make use of it infact they will prob hate it as everyone said, to big, to much stress how will they sence prey movment over waterfall continuously splashing etc? I dont have a clue if im right but i know the H.Giggas is suited to this not P.metalica!
+youViewTarantula's agreed that a H. gigas would be better suited with the water, but i mean, pokies have survived loooong before We started putting them on display in our rooms.
This enclosure actually closely resembles their natural environment. (they come from a part of india that floods often and is wracked by constant monsoons) if water was going to kill them. they would already be extinct, if they would not be able to find prey with the noise, How did they ever find prey in the wild?( let me remind you, these species of pokies come from an area that looks like this, but its roughly 40 square miles. meaning instead of a container a few feet by a few feet, in nature, they have over 40 square miles of land they have to try and find food in.
i think the fish are more for aesthetic and natural environment purposes( unless you mean to say that in nature. fish and water don't exist)
First they r way to small for the enclosure. I hope u like the idea of stressing them out and watching them drown.
Not this species
This looks fantastic bit there was one huge problem. That waterfall pool is deep and large, tarantulas are fragile and drown in such deep water. I know it looks attractive but come on.
No they aren't and no they wont. Tarantulas are excellent swimmers .
