  • We finally managed to video the first Xenesthis sp White while it was molting. It took a total of 10 hours to complete. Fortunately for the viewers the tarantula actually molted up-right allowing me to capture a very detailed carapace. Seems like this is the first video of this species so enjoy.

    I've seen some comments wondering how these guys survive in the wild during the molting process, meanwhile I'm more impressed by how they don't end up dying from exhaustion. Molting no doubt takes a lot of energy, not to mention they can't eat (or not very well) after molting because their fangs are too soft, or so I've heard.

    • @surialpaca6542

      The fangs are extremely soft. I watch tarantula keepers and they all stress the importance of not feeding their Ts until after their bodies have hardened after a molt. One of them stated that he thought the white fangs had the consistency of jelly fresh after a molt.

      Juice Box - I usually wait about a week, to 10 days before feeding them. When there fangs turn shiny black, they are fully hardened.

      The whole process was mind blowing. I feel so sorry for those poor things. That is a massive process. I hear keepers always saying "they are pre-molt" how can you tell when one is ready? If it were me I'd just unplug everything and grab a bottle of Titos and some Demerol and lock everything up! That was straight up "giving birth"...but to the themselves when you think about right?..

      Bang on about the soft fangs. Even in this video (about 4:28) you can see that the fangs are pearl white and look like rubber, when they are usually jet black.

      Rose - Grammostola Rosea: Never saw her molt, but I think my mother took the molt out and put it somewhere but forgot, IDK.
      Elizabeth - Cyriopagopus Minax: That cranky old lady never molted with me, that bitch bit me 4 times.
      I have 1 current Tarantula:

    I own a Brazilian Black Tarantula named Voodoo that I got off of my sister who currently owns over a hundred of her own of different species. when Voodoo first molted even I felt a little stressed, the process as you can see is extremely long and sometimes can go wrong, outside interferences can at times harm the tarantula that can cause long term damage until their next molt. thankfully Voodoo had a successful molt and is back to her normal self, this video really brought back that memory. It may seem strange to some of you for someone to care for a pet that you cant show physical affection for, but for me and my sister owning Tarantulas helped us become less afraid of spiders in general and shows you can bond with any animal even if it is a one sided relationship.

    • @sevenn7pure
      @sevenn7pure 5 років тому +12

      @@earlymorninggray8646 Early Morning Gray I humbly disagree. "Most" people who keep Ts as pets, do their research and set up enclosures that mimic what the particular species lives in, in the wild. If kept in an enclosure that allow it to thrive, the T has no natural enemies, is fed in regular intervals, and has a water source at all times. Some species are in danger of going extinct (because of mans destruction of their habitats and man plucking them from the wild in large numbers. A handful of countries have banned the export of species native to that country. In captivity all species are being bred to go into the pet trade and also sometimes half of the slings (spiderlings) are put back into the wild in their natutal habitat to keep numbers up. People who own Ts, have a great deal of respect for them and take great care to ensure that they thrive.
      As far as a one sided relationship, there's some merit to that as Ts do not need/require any type of affection/attention like say a dog. If you have a correct enclosure set up, water, and a consistent food source, you are doing right by them.
      I guess I will also ask if you feel the same way about dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, rats, mice, fish, and any other animal people keep as pets? Are all other animals better left in its natural habitat to fend for itself?
      Again, I'm not at all being argumentative, just giving you a different perspective to think about.

    • @sevenn7pure
      @sevenn7pure 5 років тому +11

      @@jewfro888 you would be correct on that. They need no affection from the owner, just a proper enclosure set up for the species, and a source of food and water will have you doing right by the T. I do have a species that's very inquisitive and enjoys crawling out of its enclosure onto my hand to do a little exploring. No, it's not thinking, Oh, I got to crawl on Mike's hands for a bit, that was the highlight of my day and look forward to the next time or anything like that lol but hopefully you get my point 😊😊😊

    I just found a new respect for them. they are boneless (their "bones", the only hard thing in their bodies, are their exoskeleton) litterally get too small for them so they shed it. they ain't shedding their skin, they don't have skin. they are shedding their BONES, and come out like soft blobs which hardens in the next few days and actually then starts to actually hold them together... Thank you :) I like tarantulas and I'm not that afraid of them (had one on my hand). I live in Germany so tarantulas are exotic pets to me. We don't have them in the wild. But I hate those "house spiders" crawling in the tub and being fucking fast as lightning ._. Why can't they be as fluffy and relaxed as tarantulas?

    Oof i think anyone who owns a tarantula/is interested in the spider community knows that molting like this is very dangerous for the spider and could have ended up dying. Normally they go on their backs and push their molt up off of them. This way they could eadily rupture their abdomen or lose a leg or get stuck and eventually die

    • @kraziecatclady
      @kraziecatclady 4 роки тому +1

      I was wondering about that and thought it looked wrong. I was pretty sure it was supposed to go on its back, but I haven't actually seen one molt yet. I just got my first T last week and I don't think it is anywhere near close to molting yet. I was curious what molting would look like and how long it would take. I had mantids a long time ago and lost a lot of them from cannibalism and then lost my last because I didn't know not to leave crickets in there during a molt and the cricket ate it. I felt pretty awful afterwards.
      I'm thinking about putting the molt in acrylic if it looks decent when she/he finally molts. How long should you wait before going in the cage to remove the molt? I've read a few articles and watched a few videos where they sex the T by observing the molt but all they said is that it can't be too old or dried out. I don't want to disturb him/her while he/she is still stressed out or soft from molting though.

    • @sb_zg

      molting means its shedding its skin, basically it does that when its really hot and it grows new skin

    • @131Defiance
      @131Defiance 6 років тому +21

      Nerfus So close but so far. Molting is not due to heat. Molting is the same thing as a human having growing pains. During the premolt a spider grows a brand new exoskeleton underneath its outer one, and fills inbetween the two with fluid. Eventually the tarantula will go into the actual molt process where it attempts to push itself out of the old exoskeleton. Its the way a tarantula, or any invertebrate, grows.
      Basically instead of having the same bones grow overtime like humans, it just grows brand new bones. The outside of a tarantula isnt skin its bone.

      +EnveeH2 Maybe it's because you're afraid the tarantula is dead/hurt. This is a normal process that they do often; it is perfectly fine! Just really tired.

      +EnveeH2 I did felt anxious at some point too, mainly due the feeling of claustrophobia and the fact that this process takes so long, in some way i was putting myself under the skin of the tarantula ;)

      Ferran C I'm not knowledgeable enough about large spiders to know if this is true or not, I wouldn't think it is cause they store their brain and lots of muscles in their thorax but their abdomen is like full of silk glands, however it would be a design flaw to just shit and have it sit on top of your head

      idk what that hole is, but it def isn't an anus, all my tarantulas squirt shit out of their ass right around where the silk spinners are. some species like the C. darlingi have a horn instead of a hole.

      KronicNitron Well there isn't really a term, technically people justify weird differently.

    I wish humans molted so when we get older we can just molt and have flawless skin again

    • @chickenitis2735
      @chickenitis2735 9 років тому

      I wouldn't say molt exactly.. it would be a little startling seeing empty human skin in the trash all the time (even though we would probably be used to it) I think our skin should shed its old damaged skin cells more often than it already does, then we can get flawless skin a lot faster and easier!

    • @dancad3400
      @dancad3400 9 років тому

      In fact we do shed the skin surface everyday. It is just not evident because of our daily hygene routine. Try to not to take showers like cavemen and you will notice it more, the skin surface will get dry and flaky you can scratch it off.

    • @chickenitis2735
      @chickenitis2735 9 років тому

      Indeed, though scratching it off can damage the newer skin below, it would be nice if it shed more on a daily basis still. However now that I think about it, it might be more work to take care of the skin, but that's not too bad.
