@@giovonni3225 all i have described is how to change the date to get past the error shown in the video. Sounds like you have another issue. Is it giving you that message in terminal?
Agreed😁 also I'm surprised there wasn't any mention of a crack in the plastic near the hinge, I heard it's a design flaw in these machines. I have one I bought on eBay and it has that crack. The one in this video looks very pristine and at a great price😁
That error message you got when trying to install a newer OS is due to the fact that Apple no longer releases a needed certificate for older OS. You can fix it by changing the date in terminal to a date about 2 years ago and then try to install the OS, it should now work. Open terminal and write: date MMDDHHMM18 Month/Day/Hour/Minute/18 (year)
I got one of these (a Mid-2010) last week and so far it has been great. I upgraded the RAM to 8GB and the HDD to a 240GB SSD. Running Catalina 10.15.3 thanks to dosdude1’s Catalina Patcher, it still has a few hiccups, but those are due to the decade-old CPU 😅. I really do love the keyboard and the touchpad is best-in-class, even 10 years later. The only downsides are no Metal support and its size & weight, although the latter doesn’t bother me *too* much. Definitely want to see about reapplying the thermal paste, although mine doesn’t have the thermal issue yours experienced. The fans ramp up like they should, and I haven’t seen mine get above 80-something Celsius. Honestly for a $150 investment, this is such an excellent machine! I would highly recommend it if anyone wants to use it as a “casual” laptop or for school.
Hi Ian, i have a few of these and have high sierra on one and tried catalina as well... I got rid of catalina and stuck with high sierra becuz catalina has Much high cpu demands and was far less responsive and made the thing run hotter...this is with ssds and 8gb ram...PS: so many people use Too much thermal paste which leads to overheating... remember these cpus have a tiny surface and an amount the size of a grain of rice would be sufficent...with thermal paste ,less is Better...it becomes a Barrier that heat has to pass through and if its too thick, LESS het gets to the heatsink, not more... good luck!
Ive been using this exact MacBook up until today running both Mac OS X Mavericks (for that aqua nostalgia) and Mac OS Monterey. I originally got it for £28 out of an ebay auction. Threw in a 4GB RAM stick that i had lying around to bump it up to 6GB and installed a 500GB SSD to replace the 11 year old 250GB HDD. Still runs amazingly and i am even using the original battery. Now that it is 12 years old im very impressed how well the MacBook is holding up. Can’t wait to install the full 16GB of DDR3L 1066, all that headroom will be great for the amount of RAM intensive multitasking i do. Highly recommend this model to any students that need a reliable laptop that is comfortable to type on (the keyboard feels great) so long as they are comfortable with installing a couple easy upgrades if it doesn’t come with them already as well as an unsupported OS if they want better app compatibility as time goes on. The dosdude1 line od patchers and the OpenCore legacy patcher are definitely the best for a fully stable and easy to follow installation experience.
Here is a tip: Paper towels have a rather course surface and can cause scraping like sandpaper. I recommend only using microfiber towels, as you can use them on anything. Plus you just throw them in the washer and clean them, so they can also be an investment if you view a simple towel the tool it is.
I bought one of these way back in 2010 and loved it. I used it for Logic Studio to make music and iMovie to make videos. I still have it and recently upgraded to an SSD and went to 4GB of RAM from the 2GB it had. I still use it for web browsing and email but these days I use my newer Retina MacBook for making music. These machines were built to last and Apple was really at their peak when they designed this laptop. I also had a Mac Mini but sold it to a friend in 2015. She is still using it as her main computer right now!
Awesome video! I have this exact model and it was a very pleasant surprise seeing it here. The battery on mine is almost dead and the rubber back cover completely peeled off (I missed the replacement program), but the MacBook itself is still working great. Also, respect for having a vision board 👊🏻
Man..... I sure would love to replace the Thermal Paste in my Acer Aspire 7750 i7. It gets really really hot. I already replaced the SSD drive in it a few years ago because it decided it wanted to break. I’m afraid of breaking something like the keyboard when I take it apart.
That's a Mid-2010 MacBook 7,1. It would of came with Mac OS X 10.6.3, but its update-able to macOS 10.13.6, It has a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB Graphics . The Display is a 13-inch (1280x800). The Stock HDD is a 250GB TOSHIBA MK2555GSXF SATA Disk, It has a SuperDrive with the Speed of up to x24 and supports -R, -RW for CD's, and -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW for DVD's. On the left side its got a Mag-Safe Power Adapter, Ethernet, a Mini DisplayPort, 2 USB 2.0 Ports, 1 Headphone Jack and a Kingston Lock (K-Lock). On the right side its got a CD/DVD Drive. Great Video Psivewri!
Another note, with installing 10.12 and 10.13 at this point, in the setup turn off wifi and open terminal and change date to 1010102019 and it'll work!
I got a 2010 model off eBay for about $65 USD. Came upgraded with 8GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD (though it was DRAM less sadly, but hey can't complain at this price). It really is a nice laptop for basic tasks. While it can do 1080p youtube with only a few frame drops, it realllly struggles to do 60fps video even at 720p.
I, too have this laptop. It's been running Manjaro for the past few weeks but I wanted an OS X machine again, so I loaded Snow Leopard via USB, then upgraded piece by piece to Catalina thanks to dosdude1's Catalina patcher. After that I replaced the thermal paste, unfortunately I had to drill out the bigger screw for the fan and the one that is located on top of the logic board. My logic board looked far worse than the one in the video but some brushing and some patience made it look as good as new. I also used Arctic MX4 thermal paste, when putting the logic board in I had problems with 2 of the thin cables which wouldn't stay put in their cable channels. After putting everything back together I realised I had forgotten the RAM sticks.... so the cover came back off and the RAM in. Finally I was able to press that little power on button and much to my surprise it started right up! Albeit a bit slow in the beginning, my 6,1 Macbook late 2009 with upgraded SSD and 8GB RAM looked better than ever, and Catalina dark theme really makes the macbook look so much more modern! Bought this thing for €100 a few years back and it's grown so much on me that I don't want to miss it ever!
Laptops that get hot before ramping up the fan speed... still a thing today, my HP OMEN 15 gets rather warm before the fans get to any decent speed under "default" mode. Under "comfort" mode, the fans increase in speed noticeably quicker... but it still gets hot under load.
If you didn't know, The "damaged" install is just telling you the date is wrong. Since Apple doesn't want you to be able to install specific operating systems after the end of life date..... I had to deal with that with a hackintosh once. I just changed the date around the time the OS was released and it worked. I don't know how to do that on a real mac though.
Got one of these by my school in 7th grade. Kept it in just as good condition as the one you got. I had to give it back when graduating 9th grade. I’m so sad I didn’t buy it from them, would have been a great piece to hold on to, especially in such good condition
Dremel and flat cutting wheel, can make a slot to use a flathead screw driver, I've had to do this a few times with screwed they use locktight on and stripped out.
i've heard the stubbern screws on the mac heatsinks are cause by adheasive used in the threads. Aparently the best thing to do is heat the screw a little with a soldering iron
I absolutely love the white plastic shell on those macbooks. Don't get me wrong the all metal build on modern macbooks still looks beautiful, but I still have a fondness for these old macbooks.
I have that same model and it will support 16gb of ram ;-) Im typing on it as I leave this comment. Also I am not sure why yours (even after putting new Thermal Paste) is running that hot. Mine runs between 34c-50c max. My fan is running at 2700 rpm (I have it manually set with Mac Fan Control program). Maybe that paste just needs more time to set ?
Fun Fact the 2010 White Unibody Mac-books Can have 16gbs of ram put in, as well as an SSD & at least go up to MAC OS Mojave. Im not sure what drivers the community has been making to be keep it updated but this macbook lasted me a decade. The only thing I ever had to do was get a new battery for it! Plus if there is an ssd in it, it does not get hot like usually does.
I got my MacBook Mid 2010 from last year and still uses it on macOS High Sierra since it was the last to support it..the MacBook late 2009 you owned is still runs for the latest macOS High Sierra even it has better than the macOS Sierra and could be run on 8GB of ram..with 512GB of SSD like I use currently. And now, I had upgraded to Catalina Patcher which is recommended by Luke Miani and running until today in 2023.
Good Video, I have two of those MacBook Late 2009 one of them do not work at first it just won't turn it on, I leave it for months and then one day I try again and turn on and is working since like two years ago but I notice that the Ethernet conection won't work and also when I try to boot with "option key" to choose diferent USB drive to install difernt OS, it works fine with MacOS 10.9.5 (like 55C/132F) but with El Capitan !0.11.6 or High Sierra 10.13.6 it get very hot as your MacBook @ 8:07 (90C/180F). the other MacBook works fine and I use it Daily as my seconud Mac on my Desk
Oh my gosh, I bought this same model some time ago and while trying to repaste the processors, stripped the exact same screw at 3:50. Could it be possible that that particular screw was fastened tighter than all the other screws?
Nice! I'm watching this video on my late 2009 macbook unibody. I bought it new and have had it for over 10 years. I only recently bought a new 16" macbook pro to replace it. It's currently running linux mint 19.3 and I have retropie X86 installed so I can use it as a retro gaming machine. About the only thing I haven't done to mine is replace the thermal paste. Good video!
I had a similar eBay RAM experience, guy said no RAM was included at all, but it had the original 4GB RAM installed and worked fine. I'm guessing it's a generic description they put on all listings to cover the ones that don't include it, and they figure people won't complain if they get the RAM anyway.
If you own a core 2 duo macbook you should be aware applying liquid metal to the cpu makes a massive difference as the cpu die is very small, My 13" MBP dropped by 2000rpm from newly applied mx-2
I came here just to look at how to change the thermal paste. I’ve been using this MacBook since 2010 and it has never let me down. I bought a thermal paste and I want to know how to clean the old paste before applying the new one. Does the alcohol have to be 100%? I only have 70%...
I am a bit different. If I repaired that machine, I know that a lightweight Linux distro of your choice would run well on that. Lubuntu, Peppermint, Linux Mint XFCE would all fly on 4 gigs of Ram and an SSD.
I have tinkered with a few of these unibody white MacBooks. Sadly many of them had too many problems that I didn’t know how to fix at the time. I’ve mostly been tinkering with the older classic non unibody white MacBooks form 2008, but I hope to get ahold of one of those white unibody models again someday.
I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed watching this refurbishing. Excellent video! The quality of this production was outstanding! Thank you!
I have one of these machines with an SSD and 8GB RAM. I have also purchased a caddy to replace the optical drive with a mechanical HDD for extra storage. When I go away its my Go-To machine, with the SSD and RAM upgrade it sill feels snappy and for most tasks it has enough grunt. I can still even edit RAW files taken with my DSLR though the export speed of multiple files is held back by the aging CPU. All in all this is still a great machine, its just a shame it wont run current OSX, Also, you can reset the battery health if its reporting incorrectly which I have to do every now and then on a few older macbooks I own that dont see much usage.
What caused the installer to error out is a TIME based expiration which gives a fake damaged error which can be bypass by setting the time and date to 2018 using terminal on the recovery or install usb this will not apply to OS X 10.8 and 10.7 or older as they were paid versions
i'm using one right now to type this out i had catalina running on it but i went back to windows for a while and started over with one of my favorite versions of macos on which is el capitan😂
Is there is a way to have Mac and windows at the same time? Without Virtualization? Just like a normal partition on the disk, where one is mac and the other is windows?
Hope y'all enjoyed the video! Expect another one soon 👌

Oh my gosh, I bought this same model some time ago and while trying to repaste the processors, stripped the exact same screw at 3:50. Could it be possible that that particular screw was fastened tighter than all the other screws?
Great vid and find. I picked one of these up awhile ago, put in 8gb ram, ssd and a new battery. It currently runs Catalina :)
Are you able to run Catalina on a 2009 Macbook? Or a 2010 model?
Good video!
Psivewri uploads a new video.
Me: *I JUST WOKE UP!*
Me: it's 0:10 am
I had a similar eBay RAM experience, guy said no RAM was included at all, but it had the original 4GB RAM installed and worked fine. I'm guessing it's a generic description they put on all listings to cover the ones that don't include it, and they figure people won't complain if they get the RAM anyway.
If you own a core 2 duo macbook you should be aware applying liquid metal to the cpu makes a massive difference as the cpu die is very small, My 13" MBP dropped by 2000rpm from newly applied mx-2
I used to have this unibody plastic model. Loved it. And it’s still the machine on which I had the best windows 7 experience
There's something relaxing about restoration videos.
1 min silence for the guy who sold this Mac without realising that it was working
Always enjoy your videos's! It's always good to see old machines getting a good clean up :-)
anyone knows where i can get a charger of one of those macs?
I almost always break a connector taking the boards out. Hate doing that. Screws constantly strip.
Could You give an explanation why the battery heath would change with a different OS?
im still using a 2010 white macbook with mojave patcher and Mavericks, both OS run great with the SSD
I really like this guy. Addicted actually ❤️
I love how Psivewri unboxes. You deserve more subs and views 👍
I would like to know how you solve the problem with OS 10.12 installation? I see it says USB damaged. Thanks
No one help me? :’(

Upgrade to macOS Catalina using Dosdude1 patch! :) Works great! If this is 2010 version you can upgrade to 16Gb RAM.
Mine is mid 2010 can I upgrade to 16GB ram
@@محمدآزم-ق3ط Yes it can!
You are my favorite tech youtuber. I like how you explain everything in your videos
Thank you!
The 2.4GHz (later 2010) model can actually hold up to 16 GB of RAM... is the Macbook packed with the Nvidia 320 GPU.
That’s a kick ass find. Lucky you. I love those white clam shell models.
All in all this is still a great machine, its just a shame it wont run current OSX,
Also, you can reset the battery health if its reporting incorrectly which I have to do every now and then on a few older macbooks I own that dont see much usage.
Hello can you make a review for old black MacBook days please and btw great video
Dude that ad segue was glorious
Nice vid Nathan
I love watching people repair stuff.
What caused the installer to error out is a TIME based expiration which gives a fake damaged error which can be bypass by setting the time and date to 2018 using terminal on the recovery or install usb this will not apply to OS X 10.8 and 10.7 or older as they were paid versions
Public betas also don’t seem to have this applied either as I still use the 10.12 public beta installer and it works fine
Yay! I got so excited to see you posted another video :D
3 years later and this video is still entertaining
I got one of these broken for $21 and it didn't turn on because of a poopoo power button but now it works.
The way to know if the bottom cover was replaced, if there is no serial number printed on it!
Stumbled upon your channel a few days ago! Love your videos man!
My dad still owns one, and it is still perfectly functional!
i'm using one right now to type this out i had catalina running on it but i went back to windows for a while and started over with one of my favorite versions of macos on which is el capitan😂
You should have installed *Mac OS X Catalina* with Dosdude1’s Mac OS Catalina patcher
It would probably be painfully slow on this machine anyways.
I´ve restored the same mac book... nice to find the video now after its done :D
More restoration videos!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
These are actually still really good machines
Hey is it worth it replacing the thermal paste? Or is it unnecessary
Is there is a way to have Mac and windows at the same time? Without Virtualization? Just like a normal partition on the disk, where one is mac and the other is windows?
