I once had one of these MacBooks. It was so slow, so I replaced the HDD with a SSD and upgradet the RAM from 2GB to 5GB. After that, this old white thing was nearly as fast as a new MacBook. This was amazing.

I remember I had exactly like this one that I bought back in October of 2010 for $999. Over the years I had many downs and ups with this laptop even with every upgrade it got more and more slower so I say “the hell with it” and purchased a 480GB SSD and 16GB maxed out RAM from OWC. It was pretty expensive and it ran like a Bugatti. Boots in less then 15 seconds and it was ready for anything. Just a couple of graphics tweaks to make it better and it was golden for a few year. I loved it so much and then one day I got into a car wreak and the driver who wreaked me stole my bag with this laptop, another smaller Chromebook for light focused tasks, a Lenovo tablet and a big power pack from Anker. To this day I’ve been without it for over 3 years and I still do dearly miss it. I wish to get it back or get another one and do the same process I did back then. That’s how deep the love for that laptop went. :)

Okay, so with Hugh his work it's absolutely not profitable in any way shape or form. BUT THEN UA-cam! His content is the money earner. That's what his channel is based on. In any normal situation dropping $99 on a battery for a 2010 MB is outlandish. But because he did people won't call the video half in the bag and the video will be successful and make that back in no time at all. He did a very good job with it I must say. Mid-2010 MB's are actually pretty good machines to run now adays because of MacOS 10.13. The only issue I had with the video was the fact he dropped $100 on a new battery, $50 on a SSD, but then REFUSES TO UPGRADE THE RAM BECAUSE "At the time ram is expensive." DDR3. DDR freaking 3. The max that machine can run is 16gb. to get 2 sticks of DDR3 8GB is like $40 in total. To get AT LEAST 8GB of total ram would be $20! The difference of 4GB and 8GB is what makes the entire computer worth it. Hearing that ruined it for me, HE WAS THAT CLOSE to making a good machine, dropped $150 on a battery and SSD and says "4GB is fine." Shame.

I think something that might help is that for adhesive residue, normal lighter fluid can be cheaper than purpose-sold adhesive remover and more effective than alcohol. Judy be careful, it can sometimes dissolve certain plastics too.

I restored 5 of these frequently. They were disgustly dirty. Became quite efficient at the end. Used a variety of cleaning materials for the base plate and they looked brand new when finished. Sold them for 4 times the purchase price. People love the unibody white macbook

I actually bought a MacBook just like that off EBay for 50 bucks. The insurance company that it came from was getting new ones. They had put in a SSD drive and eight gigs of memory before they decided to get new ones. Everything works like brand new. First MacBook I’ve ever owned. Plus I saved from the trash heap.

THE easiest way to clean ANY motherboard it to wash it. Spray it with mean green let it sit on the motherboard about 15 minutes and then run warm water over it. let it sit under a fan until it is completely dry and when done it will look like new. An added benefit is that on older mother boards you clean under components you would never be able to get at any other way. I have done this with motherboards since 2000 and it has never failed. Also IF you are going to use a brush a paint brush works better. The ends are softer and get in the cracks better.

These MacBooks are kind of dear to me as it's one of the very first laptops I ever owned. Trying to piece one together using Mac's bought for parts, but will have to be careful with the ones purchased, as they are rather fragile from being abused and left to their disrepair. Glad yours didn't need much help, just the minor additions of SSD and the battery. Mine have bent hinges along the back. We'll have to see how far it goes, but I've noticed no life from the second MacBook, and a distorted feed to the screen of the first. Thanks for the direction.

Amazing job mate. In last december my macbook pro felt in thd floor and the motherboard broke. Since that, as the repair is quite expensive here in brazil, I am using an older version of this macbook, the mid2009 as my dayly driver. They do are still up go the tasks. Those were well madd computers.

This is about how bad the MacBooks at my old school would get. I bought a 2009 Air last year along with a 2011 iMac. I be sure to refresh their OS every now and then to keep productivity going at it's highest. Taking the leap from Windows to Mac was a big one, and it's saved me a lot of time and frustration when it comes to interacting with and creating my own media server.

The biggest issue with these models is when the bottom rubber starts to some off and gets stretched out. I believe Apple had a recall on this for the rubber.

I got the same MacBook design, but earlier. 2009 late. It was the first unibody plastic.
I am actually writing this comment on this computer. I still absolutely LOVE it, however I use it as as secondary computer/main computer is an iMac 27"/.
Got the same SSD which really gave a kick to the speed.
Mine is in perfect condition. In fact a few years ago I brought it to the Apple Store to change the bottom rubber part and the guy was surprised how clean my MacBook was. He said it is rare to see a MacBook in this condition. So I took it as a compliment :)
I will never understand how people can make their computer so dirty..
These things are expensive, why don't you take care of it, so you can use it much longer...
Great video, added to my fav. list!

Ive had this computer since 2010. I got an SSD, 16gb RAM, and an LCD replacement. My cat used to sit on the laptop while it was closed and damaged it. I recently also changed the thermal paste, I had put off doing it for a while because I had no prior experience and taking apart the motherboard made me nervous. My laptop would get RED HOT with 11 year old thermal paste. It would get so hot that when I would charge it , it melted the plastic around the little pins on both the charger and the port. I followed the guide from ifixit for this specific laptop. When I turned around the motherboard, I was surprised at the amount of dust on it. It looked fairly clean on the surface, so I wasnt expecting the caked dust on the underside. The top screw of the heatsink was so tight that I never was able to remove it. I stripped it but Im lucky it was the top screw, I removed the others and just slid the heat sink away from the board and carefully tried to bend it upwards as much as I could to place it back properly. When I turned it back on, the screen had red glitches on some areas. My heart sank and I opened it up again, disconnected the display cable, blew air on it and tried again. A small piece of dust mustve been inside the connector. It worked fine once I turned it back on. It was really satisfying doing it and my computer runs quite cool now. I love that this laptop is so easily upgradeable.
