I just discovered that I find PC repair/restoration vids therapeutic haha. It's satisfying to see something so broken get brought back to life and in good condition.
Now that's a restoration, not like some others that replace everything with new parts and call it "restored", you really put some effort on it. Great work!
Wow, I never realized that that gpu commonly had issues. I have that exact model, and I've had many drive issues and plan to soon upgrade to an ssd on it, or more likely to a newer Retina MacBook Pro as a side laptop. Edit: Actually, I just booted the laptop back up, and the gpu isn't recognized and the system is using the HD 3000.
Nathan, you are quite knowledgeable when it comes to computers. I have seen several of your videos where you fix old or damage computers and restore them back to life. Congratulations on such an excellent work.
i think you should daily drive this or at least leave it on a few days a week to see how long the gpu fix will last! would be a very interesting experiment :)
That macbook pro is really impressive on how it held itself up even when the screen was split from the case. I can hardly imagine what it went through.

it's about time you need to launch your own eucalyptus oil business. this channel is virtually a eucalyptus oil Ad channel. A dedicated video about where to get and how to use eucalyptus oil would also be great. i bet it has many more usage than as a cleaning agent. E.g. it works great when removing adhesive residues and some non-polar stains. sometimes better than isoprophyl oil. But you can also put it in to hot water and drink it as a tea when you have cough or sputum.
I love this channel! I dont know why youtube took so long to recommend it, I'm always watching repair stuff. (I also love the car repair stuff. As someone who fixes electronics and cars/lawn mowers its fun to watch)
1:20 As Louis Rossman would say: "Fanspin!" also judging from what he said about Linus using an oven to reflow a GPU I'm sure he'd have a lot to say about your approach as well 👀
I've reflowed BGA chips many times. 90% of the repairs remain valid... The melting point for lead-free solder (no doubt, used in this case), is 217Celsius. In our reflow ovens at work, we start with 320 degrees, as it offers the best solution in undustrial applications (motor controllers, solid state relays, wind turbine electronics)
I have this laptop and had the gpu issue you mention in the video, However before toasting I decided to check all the tantalum capacitors to see if they were defective, there was 1 that has negative readings well under a volt, I heated that cap and tried the laptop only to find that it worked and the cap was temporally restored at this point I bought a replacement cap from ebay and and replaced the dying cap. Mine is now fixed been gaming on it for over 3 months no issues. when heating that gpu up you most likely did nothing but temporarily fixed a cap that sends power to the gpu. The restoration was great but the lack of electronics skill applied is sad but now you know for next time. Love the video keep em coming.
For the Sierra installer, I believe the date settings are beyond the threshold for successful installation (authentication on server side, I presume) You can circumvent this by starting Terminal within the installation USB and use the 'date' command to manually change the system date to a time when installation is allowed (the initial release date of the desired OS, for example), then start actual installation
