Pulling the Gearbox 🧐 | How Hard Can It Be? Land Rover Defender DIY Mechanics
Вставка

- asimplyfab.life/ Has your clutch ever just stopped?! Just decided not to move any further? What could be the problem? Cylinders? Fluid? Fork? Or... the Thrust Bearing!
We do some more archaeology into the Defender, taking off the whole gearbox section in search of the cause of the problem. Not an easy task - and perhaps intimidating to those who haven't done this before. But most of it is basic. The big challenge is remounting the bell housing to the engine!
Luckily this happened close to a workshop and a special thanks goes to Rob for all his help in organising this (again😅) and to Naomi for getting stuck in with spanners and hammer.
Let me know how you think we got on.

Great video Mate
I find it easier to remove the engine to do the clutch. Much easier to manipulate the engine than the gearbox. Takes me about an hour to remove my engine. My Series 3 I did what you did, and it was a struggle. On my 90 I popped the engine and it was far easier.
You da man! 👍😎👍 Defender Super Hero! 🥇🏆🥇 Well done and thanks for the video! Fingers crossed I’ll never have to see places like these … 😳 keep rolling! 😎
Cheers dude 🤘😎 - trying to keep it rollin'!
That bad piece of welding on the selector fork is where someone has reinforced (not factory) the pin can wear through on cheaper forks hence the plate in front on the pressed dome.
Excellent job, done the same job on mine two year ago. Lots of swearing & sweat but great when it’s sorted. Well done to. Give that man a cigar😊👍
Have a box to pull tmrrw for a customer - "Helpfully" someone has welded the crossmembers to the chassis. The only way is up... baby... Bollachz..
🙄😬nothing like an extra challenge😅
Hey buddy, I love your vlogs. Thanks again for sharing!
Great job should of weld a piece steel plate on back of fork stops ball pin going through that’s why all weld was on the back on the old fork
😭😭😭😭loved the thrust bearing wink 😉
😉😂😂
Fly over to Louisiana and help me out man...noone here never seens a defender....
thanks boetie
Good job.. just did mine during an engine upgrade
Hardest part was deffo getting it back together - until a young mechanic mentioned the engine hoist!😅👍
Clutch lever arm definitely made in Britain ! Hahaha
Better than German. Over engineered to hell, and need a mortgage to fix it.
@@Jin-Ro absolutely true! They’re both shite 😉
Good vibe. You can either bitch about stuff or just get down and sort it with a smile. It can always be worse.
Wish I hadn't clicked on this.. bad omen... Mine's just packed up too on the Santana...
😬😮 good luck man - give it a go! (🧐although Santana has a different engine/gearbox🤷♂️?)
@@ASimplyFabLife Yeah different engine (Iveco) and gear box (used to be an LT85) but mine has the ZF....
Same basic clutch though just thrust bearings different.
Fortunately seems to be the clutch side master cylinder that has gone as it is leaking badly and the hydraulics have no pressure.. Parts ordered.
Will be a good result if the clutch itself is still working ok...
@@garethdwatkins I'll take the clutch slave cylinder 🤞for $12 please, Alex (roll Jeopardy music 😉)
This was a nice experience to have had... but I sure hope it doesn't amount to removing your gearbox
Nice job... if you don't end up with a few screws over... then the job's not done right... I usually reckon that a little blood needs to be spilt... Great effort!
Thank you sir! For a first effort - not bad. I was extremely glad to get that bellhousing back on😅😅😅
build a wooden frame for the gearbox then roll the car forward when the clutch is changed roll the car back its much easier to get the gearbox to line up
👍😅thanks for the tip! (we always seem to learn how it is done after the fact 😂)
Bro an expert!😳🤭
I have done that 3 times now - as Britpart make such reliable clutches - made of cheese and cardboard. In 12 years, 3 clutches! Thankfully Borg & Beck, much better
This one came in a Bearmach box 😬🤞😅
Bread? haha Just use grease! pack with grease, hammer a very tight piece of bar in and it will pop the bush out.
Yep, hopefully I don`t need to do this for a while....
I had a thrust bearing too....mine melted dont know why. I never rest my foot on the clutch etc
We had a run of very steep hills where the gerbox got so hot we lost clutch pressure...
Would re fitting be easier if gearbox and trans box were split?
Not sure on that one 🧐but might make sense. I have to say (again) that the engine hoist makes short work of it. And it may save some extra spanner work leaving it whole (and dare I say another potential leak there if it wasn't already😅😆))
Where did you get the alignment tool please?
The garage we bought the parts from lent us the tool for the job (not sure if I mentioned it in the video). They are available from the main vendors or ebay (e.g. less than a tenner from Paddock)
"1 or 2 screws left over" No you found a more efficient way of putting it back together.
Solihull in the dictionary also means approximate/close enough (probably)😅🤙
The least fun job ever.
