  • Here we make a start on getting the MT82 back together, showing you the tools I use, tools I've made and some ways around issues I came across. Part 2 will be up very soon when we will complete the build.

Hey guys just wanted to give you some tips. I've become specialized in the MT82 for mustangs and have rebuilt about 50 of them now.
First off, good job on this video you are very methodical and smart about your approach.
Tip 1: there is really no need to warm up/freeze the bearings or shafts for install or removal. The bearings on the MT82 are actually quite exceptional bearings. We RARELY see any issues with them. The amount of resistance applied to the inner bearing races during install/removal is not enough to cause any damage. The inner and outer races do not even need to be supported. If you need to remove the input shaft just tap it out with a dead blow. I must clarify that temperature differential is always a useful tool and technically the "correct" and safe way of handling it but in reality not worth the trouble on this particular transmission. You won't hurt it I promise.
Tip 2: when installing the 5/6 shift fork put the slider into 6th gear and it will be very easy to snake the fork into place without the bronze shift pads falling out
Tip 3: Realistically you need at least a 40 ton press to press the countershaft gears on and off. They are on very tight. Every crank of the press will remind you of turning the handle on a "Jack in the Box".
Tip 4: 3rd and 4th gear each need 10 thou of play after your countershaft is assembled. If you remember to install the snap ring on the 3/4 hub then 3rd gear will automatically be at 10 thou. If you have more than 10 thou, you forgot to install the snap ring. To get the 4th gear to 10 thousandths you just need to make sure that the 6th countershaft gear is fully pressed down. Sometimes people press it down until it visually appears to be seated all the way. Usually I keep cranking the press until it pops one more time but it will be a very very slight and short pop. After the slight short pop you will be fully seated and 4th gear will have the correct 10 thou tolerance.
Tip 5: If you don't want to have to by specialized tools, use the open end of a 16mm wrench to pry the 4 shift rail detents out. 22mm wrench for the shift stop
Tip 6: Your input shaft may be difficult to turn by hand after completion. Don't worry. Finish the rebuild, get your rear case on and bolted together, get your countershaft bolt torqued down, install your seals and get the rear flange torqued down as well. Last thing you will need to do is pop the end of the input shaft with a dead blow a couple times. This will free up your synchros which are likely stuck together. This is typically what causes the transmission to be difficult to turn over
Tip 7: Just to reinforce this, USE ANAEROBIC SEALER. Do not use RTV. The mt82 transmission requires very particular tolerances in order to properly function. RTV adds enough thickness to be able to throw off the function of the trans.
I have a lot more tips than that but I'll save them for another time.
At the end of the day I would not recommend this transmission to the DIY guy. In fact I would not recommend it to anyone who has not rebuilt several before. If you want to try it by all means go for it but this is not one of those transmissions that works correctly assuming everything is bolted together correctly. There is more to it than that. Many quirks with the MT82

Hello @TAShannon1..I think we may have spoke on this subject a while back?
Glad now that you are now a specialist after building 50 MT82s. I would be very interested in any strip or rebuild videos you may have made on this particular gearbox.
I'm wondering if you are familiar with bearing failure due to a condition called Brinelling ?
This is from a site the internet.
"All bearings have a typical service life. However, an OEM’s suggested service life is not always a guarantee. Bearing failure comes in many forms, such as corrosion, smearing and brinelling. The definition of brinelling is the permanent indentation of a hard surface. Bearing brinelling occurs when the internal raceways of a bearing have been permanently damaged. The indentations can quickly lead to improper operation, like chattering or excess vibration, which in turn can accelerate other forms of wear. Two common forms of wear are galling, the adhesion between sliding surfaces, and spalling, the flaking off of materials under rolling pressure. Brinelling causes wear in which, similar marks are pressed into the surface of a moving part, such as bearings or hydraulic pistons. It is usually undesirable as the parts often work with other parts close to each other. "
This is well know in the industry but very little known to individual and independent repairers.
In the MT82 transmission test booths, all bearings, gears and shaft surfaces that carry internal bearing are checked . Each bearing has in effect it's own song sheet...a Hertz reading given by the manufacture, the input shaft you are talking about in "tip1" has a Hertz rating of 0.38htz when fitted correctly. The test booth would detect any and all anomalies.
If the input shaft had a different htz reading, or any other bearing for that matter, the box would be rejected and come to me.
Any transmission that was stripped automatically had any bearing scrapped that had been subject to incorrect load, such as pressing or knocking the input shaft out with a dead-blow hammer. A bearing being subjected to this is prone to failure. It may sound and feel fine after the rebuild, and it may well me fine for god knows how long, but the usual life span of the bearing will be considerably shortened.
There are many many , as they say " nuances" to building transmissions, and the MT82 is no exception.
If, at some point you would like to go through these, and there are a good many, I would be happy to go through a full and correct strip and full an correct rebuild.
      Regards,
      Alan.

    Good day Nigel.
Thank you for this very informative video, I have managed to rebuild the entire transmission not even having to use a press only my heat gun, I now only need to install the seals and fill with oil. This video had made the task way way easier than I anticipated it would be. Thanks mate ! !

Good vid that's a tough box to build , the small parts in the hub are called shifts plates, and the circlip could be hammered closed on the bench [ to resize ] we normally put inners hubs on first [when interference] then the outer and pop in the shift plate / detents , not really a diy box for 99.9%

Would you mind putting a link to where you found and downloaded the MT82 manual? (even though it had its issues). I am unable to find one that has the steps in it, like the one you show does. The Helm manual is worthless for rebuilding.

HI Nigel love the video's mate, I live in Western Australia so may need to order some parts well in advance, Did you replace any bearings? if you can recall the sizes and numbers it would be appreciated. I've got the 6th speed vibration starting to happen so trying to get the parts all together for a rebuild in the next couple of weeks. .
Cheers and keep the video's flowing.

I think you made a good decision there Nigel, I also thought that snap ring was a little lose...anyway, great video and please don’t apologise for the lighting mate, it’s UA-cam...and in all honesty I’d rather watch this than the crap on the BBC!
Have you seen the new Ineos Grenadier 4x4 yet, it’s looking like it’s going to be the replacement for the Defender when it comes to buyers needing a utility truck! Just wondered what your thoughts are on it?

Yeah, I saw the grenadier and commented on the videos. I just hope it doesn't turn into a luxury item, sold from BMW dealerships with glitz and glamour. All that promo crap costs money.

Defender90 Keswick. Nigel's Land Rover channel. I was wondering if they’d be setting up dealerships, From what I’ve read it’s looking like they want it to be aimed at the commercial market which is good!
