A clean nylon (like the stockings kind) is great for a filter. Just one can make plenty for your jars. Water drains easily and even tiny seeds don't get thru. On a side note, I start a jar everyday and always have one ready to eat. I only use a tablespoon of seeds.
I have Alfalfa, Crimson Clover, and Sunflower seeds in the works right now. I use plastic containers that are left over from Sour Cream and other foods, cut a hole in the middle of the top and place some tulle type mesh inside. When I snap the lids on it stays taught and works perfectly for draining.
wow this video has so much to it. This is great for people who want to grow their food or part of y but don't have a garden. Please make more of this. This is the ultimate solution for being healthy and doing something productive without many resources. This video is tottaly practical and useful.
it is such a typical process, here is the better one - soak some seeds for the whole day, take a piece of wet cloth and put the seeds in it before sleeping, now tie it to a proper ventilated place, the next morning u will have a nice bunch of sprouts :)
GREAT video! Thank you! I have been sprouting for years but have gotten away from it for the past 3 years. This video has reminded me to go back to it! Thank you so much-I subscribed!

Wow this was such a great video! I have never attempted anything like this but now I feel confident I can do it. Also, thank you for showing us how to do it without buying all this odds an ends they try to sale you. I'm so glad I found this video before I spent a bunch of money on pointless junk I don't need.
I'm just getting started and quickly found out less is best. 1/8 cup of seeds per quart size jar is plenty. They grow and grow and grow!!! I got a little overambitious my first outing trying to sprout 1/2 cup in one quart jar, and quickly found myself splitting it to more and more jars, and eventually wound up freezing and then eventually throwing out about half of it. 1/8 cup per quart jar is plenty.
What an awesome idea for inexpensive mesh strainer I just watched your DIY so obviously I had to watch your video on sprouting I am a beginner so all your knowledge really helps I love your videos, thanks!!
Awesome video, was so excited when I saw this as I have everything here at home right now to do this!! Even the mesh. Have lots of seed left from last year so going to get started on this tonight. Hint for smaller seeds. Since the mesh fits snugly in the jar's ring, I just cut out an extra one for the smaller seeds and placed them both in the ring adjusting them accordingly to make smaler "holes". Works great!!
Just found some great deals for seeds on Ebay. Many are American and certified organic as well. I found one for mung beans, 1 pound for less than 13 dollars which includes shipping. Found some on there for less but had to pay shipping which actually ends up paying a dollar or 2 more.
Hi Kim....excited to try this technique since we cannot grow outdoors living in Ontario. To create smaller holes can I suggest to use 2 diy screens at the top of the jar? Great videos!!!
HEY, SO exciting to start growing. I rinsed and covered them and then came and watched your message. Went back and made both mason jars soaking jars lol...……. But anyway I learned about may mung bean at Benny Hanna. Oh goodness. So now years later Im trying to make sprouts. Your smile and décor is warm and inviting !!@@##$ TY
Super cool idea!!…*****just one call out here is seeds sold in stores are not to be consumed as they have some protective coating to avoid seeds from spoiling. *****so this process can be done only with seeds from our own garden or any seeds that are consumable
I have had great success buying "fresh" dried beans for sprouting at Asian grocery stores, Indian stores have wide variety , they are both cheap as you are buying by the pound ! Just check the production date and if its last years harvest they are probably good. If a batch doesn't work you can make chili :) Would imagine this would be true for organic/vegan/natural food type stores. Probably a lot more expensive.
Thank you for this video, I have been wanting to try growing sprouts but some of the videos seem so involved plus you have to buy certain containers. So glad I found your channel..
When I was a kid, back in the 70's we used cheesecloth and rubber bands for the tops. My mom would put them under the sink but I like the idea of putting them on the counter so you can keep an eye on them. I recommend covering them with a dish towel. Someone asked how long you keep rinsing? Until you are ready to eat them. If they start growing too much you can store and stunt their growth by putting in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Just make sure they smell fresh when you eat them. If they start to smell bad in the bag then toss them in the garden or compost.
Thanks for this step by step. It helped a lot. I am on day 2 of my first time trying to grow sprouts. I am excited to try different varieties as I didn't know there were so many. Do you have a video on the whole list from easy to advanced to grow.

Hi Kim, I've seen some controversy on whether sprouts are safe to eat raw because of the possibility of ecoli forming. What are your experiences or knowledge on this? I've enjoyed growing sprouts myself but have been too paranoid to eat them without cooking first.
I know this is an old comment but I thought I reply in case someone else asks. You can buy seeds that are specifically made for sprouting/eating. The seeds should have been tested for ecoli.
Thanks that was very helpful. I have a garden every year outdoors. And looking forward to growing some sprouts indoors in the cold season. I’m a new sub thanks for sharing
I bought a huge bag of sunflower seeds in the bird seed area of Walmart for growing microgreens outside in a pot. I suppose they can be used as sprouts. It's worth a try, anyway. Of course, the birds and squirrels have been taking their share but I use a wire mesh cover so somethin will be left for us to eat.
I thought it was perfect. It gives us an idea how much crunch sprouts give to a what they are being served on. I personally can't stand anything that is soggy or non crunchy, so listening to the crunch answered my question about sprout texture. I am aware many people can't handle other people çhew sounds, but eating is a part of life.
Fantastic that you are growing sprouts! The sunlight does help them green up, but mung beans won't get super green, they tend to be a bit on the whiter side even when placed in sunlight. Keep me posted and Happy Holidays!
Cool Video! How do you get rid of the seed coatings that way? I haven't tried sprouting yet, but I can see trimming microgreens 'cause the husk falls away. Thanks. Brent
Glad you enjoyed the vid, Brent. I don't worry about getting rid of the seed coatings, just pull them out of the jar and eat them. Did you try microgreens yet? It's fun to have the variety growing inside. Happy holidays and thanks for watching!
Haven't tried either. I have considered microgreens many times. I garden outside even in winter so I always seem to be busy to get to all of my "want to"s. Brent

Yesterday, I starting growing small seed, sprouts, a micro salad and broccoli sprouts. It seems like there is still a bunch of water in the seeds after I drained them. Is this a problem. I purchased a sprouting top that sits on four little legs, so it isn't at an angle as you suggested. So, the questions are, is there too much water in them and is it a problem to sit on four legs and not be at an angle. Thanks! And it was a nice video.

I did the same thanks for the Amazing tip

Can you link the kind you use in here?
Great! I'm gonna do this. By the way, you can take a few of the sprouts, stick them in the soil and grow a plant too.
Awesome, visited a naturopathic doctor that told me I should try this! Amazing tutorial video, I love sprouts 🌱 ❤️

Vinyl window screen mesh might be small enough to make a sprouting lid for tiny seeds.
I've also cover the jar mouth with cheesecloth secured with a rubber band for really fine seeds like arugula.

Do you rinse and drain after they sprout? And do you eat the actually seed or pull it off from the sprout?
Thanks for the video!

Yesterday, I starting growing small seed, sprouts, a micro salad and broccoli sprouts. It seems like there is still a bunch of water in the seeds after I drained them. Is this a problem. So, the questions are, is there too much water in them and is it a problem to sit on four legs and not be at an angle. Thanks! And it was a nice video.
