Hi Jeff, thanks for a great video! My question is in regards to freezing the sprouts; Once the sprouting process is completed, do you recommend to automatically freeze to maintain bioavailability, even if the plan is to consume some the next day, or perhaps daily?

@@DigitalChef1970 Love this demonstration of the total process. The thumbs down people may have an issue with the music being loud, making it a distraction on your well executed instructions. Or perhaps they're jealous of all the counter space in your kitchen, not to mention the huge well organized pantry. Oh yeah the windows in front of the sink. Great kitchen for great food.!!!😁 THANKS🌿

I’ve been growing broccoli sprouts for many years. I recommend rinsing them as often as possible throughout the day to prevent them from spoiling - something that can happen very easily and quickly. I keep mine right next to the kitchen sink so it’s easy to just rinse each time I am there (about five times a day is good).
I harvest mine (the final rinse in a bowl of water) by agitating them back and forth vigorously with a fork so that the seed hulls accumulate around the edge of the bowl, then scoop the sprouts out from the middle.
Do NOT eat the seed hulls. I find they harbor bacteria, and I am guessing that they also contain a lot of lectins.

I’ve grown several batches using this method. Superb instructions and super tasty. I tried freezing, however, they are only really good for smoothies. I prefer to make a batch and then eat it theough the week while the other batch is going. Usually start sun/mon and by sat they are ready. Store In a snap lock glass container with some paper towel and they are awesome right to the end of the week. I might change the paper towel if it gets too damp. So much better than store bought and brain dead simple following this process. Thanks so much man 🙏

Thank you for your video, for teaching us how to grow sprouts and specially the tip about how the dairy ruins the nutrient absorption of antioxidants! Incredible info! I myself prefer oat milk! By the way, doggos actually do great with most veggies! Our pup who lived 18 years (Yorkshire mix) loved boiled sweet potatoes, blueberries, banana (I know!), boiled carrots, raw cabbage, cooked oatmeal, cooked rice or baby rice meal, green apples cut in small pieces (have to peel the green apple first though). Peeled apples cut in small pieces also happen to be great natural dental cleaners for doggos. He also loved peanut butter! He was a really healthy pup for 18 years until his passing a month ago. He taught us so much and we hope his life continues to teach others! He ate a bit of tuna or mackerel or sardine with his dinner or salmon with his dinner with boiled white or brown rice and homemade veggie broth.

I also made all of our Jack Russel/Corgi's dog food from scratch and feed him all of the things, except peanut butter that you fed your doggie from about age 14, until he passed at age 20! When he was about 14, he was chewing on his paws biting his skin, losing his hair. I asked my hubby to take him to the Vet and see what was wrong with him. The Vet said, "Oh, he's just nervous." I told my hubby, "That's nonsense. He's well loved and spoiled!" I did my own research, and discovered most canned or store bought dog food was junk and began to make his food from scratch, much like what you fed your dog. Additionally, I found some fabulous doggie vitamins called Dinovite: purchased online. Within about 2 weeks of his "new" diet regimen, plus the Dinovite he stopped biting/chewing himself, his hair stopped falling out and he was supper healthy until his death at age 20! Healthy diet, healthy lifestyle is a winner for all animals AND HUMANS!!!

It was quite a task to get them out of the sprouts. On the 2nd batch I realized there were floaters and sinkers. On day 3 or 4, before dumping the water out of the jar, I'd scoop the floaters off the top of the water with a small strainer. Repeat this for the next couple days. When it was time to harvest the sprouts I put them in a large bowl with water, scooped out the few floaters left, and with the sinkers on the bottom, the floating sprouts were practically seed pod free. Great video Jeff.
One way to bring on sprouting more rapidly is to mix the water with 1% Hydrogen Peroxide. This breaks any dormancy. Store in darkened airing cupboard too if conditions are cool which will promote even faster growth. That alone may save at least 1 day.
This used to be the technique by seed breeders to promote more rapid establishment of seeds. Just needs using for the first couple of days.

Super easy to find mason jars in second hand shops. I have some silicon screen that I cut and insert in the jar lid and it works beautifully. I'd sprout smaller amounts so as to have fresh sprouts daily, rather than one huge amount that ends up in the freezer. Also compost those seed hulls, don't put them down the drain!

These are kind of in between sprouts and microgreens. If you want them (and the Sulforaphane) to last longer in the freezer, dry them well (a dehydrator set a low temp of like 80 to 90 or so , or just a fan blowing on them in a dry, non humid house. In either case, putting them in paper towels and lightly patting them first, will speed up the process), and then vacuum pack them (preferably in a jar so they don't get crushed). This will extend the life to maximum over any process except for freeze drying (which is an expensive, complicated process and most people can't afford the equipment to do this).

Get a rectangular take out box with a lid. Turn the lid upside down and cut 2 slits close to and parallel to the short sides. Fold a paper towel in half and thread it through the slots with about 2 inches hanging down on each side. Fill bottom of box with about 2 inches of water. Place upside down lid with paper towel on top. Allow water to wick itself up on lid. Sprinkle broccoli seeds on paper towel on lid. Cover for 2 days. Uncover and forget. In about 1 or 2 weeks you have sprouts.

I actually thought they were even easier to grow than this. I guess I'll find out this week.
My favorite uses for Broccoli or Alfalfa Sprouts:
    1) Mesclun salad w/ sprouts, baby carrots, croutons and balsamic vinaigrette. When I need a fast, healthy dinner that requires no chopping, this is a lifesaver. It's really tasty!
    2) Avocado toast on Ezekiel bread w/ 1 over medium egg, a little sriracha, herbamare & a handful of sprouts.
    3) Open-faced California Melt: Ezekiel bread, avocado, aged cheddar, tomato, red onion, broiled then topped with sprouts. A few dashes on herbamare. Great lunch.
    4) On a veggie burger!
I know you said dairy interferes with absorption (did not know that) but these are just some ways I find tasty to use them up before they go bad. Apparently dogs love them too! Not yours of course :)

In general, doing sprouts in jars is great, because theyre wonderfully convenient and easy to use. I use it for mung beans, for sprouting kamut for homemade sprouted grain flour, and for sprouting chickpeas for hummus, and I use it for testing sprouting viability of store bought pulses and seed spices ... but that's about it.
Sprouting in jars does have some very distinct drawbacks however, depending on what you're sprouting. First is that all the roots come along for the ride, and roots tend to be a less tender/appetizing than the rest of the plant. Second is you're limited in how much light you can give them (very uneven) and how large/green they can get. Granted some sprouts taste better blond rather than green (ex: mung, corn), but they are the exception to the rule, because microgreens usually taste better than their sprouted counterparts.
Speakingxof which, I just did broccoli 2 ways, and the result was a revelation. I did the first by the usual jar sprouting method, and the other I did as microgreens (shallow 10x10 nesting tray with coco coir, 3 days weighted blackout, 2 days covered blackout, and then 5 full days under my grow lights while bottom watered with nutrient solution). Holy Cow, those microgreens were a full order of magnitude more enjoyable to me ... no tough flavorless roots - just tender delicious stems and fabulously vibrant and elegant cotyledens (which look like jumbo clover), with lovely mild flavor, and no trace of tannic bitterness. The greens tasted more like the white inner stalk, whereas the sprouts smelled and tasted closer to broccoli florettes. For me, It was B for sprouts vs an A++ for the microgreens. The roots and coco coir didnt go to waste either ... I'll recycle them via composting.
Anyway, sprouts are great, and I love em ... but for some plants, they are just a hint of what they could be with a bit more time and effort.

I had a sprouted Wild Rice salad, one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. It was asian inspired (sesame, ginger, red pepper, edamamde, bean sprouts? etc). It keeps great in the fridge for easy lunches, I'm planning on trying to sprout some wild rice for the 1st time to try making it.
I accidentally sprouted lentil once. I soaked dry lentils but then didn't cook them as I got busy. I just drained them and put them in a clear tupperware in the fridge, next thing I knew I had lentil sprouts. I think people tend to overthink sprouts sometimes. I wound up making a delicious sprouted lentil soup w/ lemon (I know cooking reduces nutrition but I still wanted to make soup as I'd originally intentioned and didn't boil too hard).

@@LadySpace_888 TIP: In my experience, sprouting various grains pulses and legumes (after the usual pre-soak needed to kickstart germination) tends to cut the usual cooktime (for dry unsoaked) by about 1/3 to 1/2 ... thus, dry chickpeas that normally need 60 mins might only need 30-40 to cook fully after sprouting.
Anyway, i occasionally make a middle eastern sprouted wheat pilaf, using Kamut, that sounds similar to your rice dish.

If I were to try it, i'd start with UNPOLISHED rice (that hasnt been kilned, irradiated or parcooked to enhance shelf life or cook time), and pre-soak before sprouting - say, 4 hrs for long grain, and 6-8 for short grain, and then drain & sprout in a sprouting jar (rinsing 2x/dy) for 1-2 days until tails emerge to 1/8" or so ... THEN cook via the usual pilaf method. Easy peasey.

We learn, as we get to know Him, we can trust Him and will have the tools to stay strong during life's challenges. We'll find His commands n commandments are for Our BENEFIT.
My husband always said "THE WHITER THE BREAD THE FASTER YOUR DEAD".
I agree. One of my favorite inspirational quotes is: IT'S NOT HOW MANY TIMES YOU FAIL; IT'S HOW MANY TIMES YOU TRY AGAIN.
Especially during the 'healing crisis', the body is cleansing & healing deeply.
Dr Jensen shared some amazing examples of healing crisis. There are probably in some of his books. One was a young adult male & his lung problem. Another was a grade school aged girl who had a tumor on her lower back. The tumor developed tentacles as it grew and it became inoperable. With guidance n doing what she should & should not do, the tumor began to shrink including it's tentacles. It's grip was released and I'm not sure if there was surgery to remove it or if it was absorbed.
Here's one. Dr Jensen had an elderly client, a lady in her 80s. After being in his treatment clinic he had in those days,, she was to the point of feeling great. (I don't remember what health issue she was in his clinic for..but do remember her glasses were getting increasingly stronger. Unhappily, she was facing loosing her sight.) She had been in his care for some time. Right after she was telling him how good she was feeling, she went blind. After 3 days of being blind, her sight returned and her body had healed that area so well she no longer required any glasses!
Praise the Lord. The body knows what it needs to heal & what to heal first. OUR BODY HEALS FROM THE INSIDE, OUT AND FROM THE HEAD, DOWNWARD...
We must be diligent to get to the point of the body responding so dramatically. But it is smart and it wants to be well. But it will stop its full efforts if one starts n stops too much.
I believe Dr Jensen was the one I learned that COFFEE DRINKERS OFTEN GET HEADACHES FOR 3 DAYS WHEN THEY BEGIN FASTING.

Thanks for the specific instruction. I had tried before with a different system I had bought. Didn't work! I got smelly rotten seeds. Thanks for explaining the rinsing twice a day, the progression and how to harvest at the end.

Thank you so much for that detailed video! I was on Amazon trying to figure out what I needed to make sprouts and it was SO confusing with all the different trays etc. I'm no longer afraid of making them! Thank you so much. I'm just curious if the procedure is the same for other seeds such as sunflower, etc.

fabulous video, thank you! would you happen to know if the seeds are edible, say if we choose not to separate the roots from the seeds once they have sprouted?

I am not sure but I think you can. I think they will be bitter. Probably best to google it and see what others say.

You can eat them. And from what i've read they contain even more sulforaphane than the sprouts.

Most seeds go out of the body the same way they go in. Coated by nature to do so.
