When my stepsons were small and came to live with us, the older one was your standard 'picky eater'. Letting them have their own sprouting garden was such an excellent way to get them interested in taking part in what they ate.
Love growing sprouts! Remember to CHEW your broccoli sprouts: when you chew the broccoli sprouts, you activate the enzyme (myrosinase) that converts a compound (glucoraphanin) in the broccoli sprouts into sulforaphane
I grow Broccoli Sprouts all the time! Not only are they the healthiest to eat their a lot cheaper than what the grocery store sells. True Leaf Market are favorite seeds to buy from.
Ive been growing sprouts for a couple years now after a couple of my grocery stores stopped selling alfalfa sprouts. Super easy and way cheap compared to store bought, I go through about 1-1.5 pounds of seeds per year I get from Amazon.
I LOVE broccoli sprouts! I put them on my smashed chickpea and avocado toast, topped with nutritional yeast and everything bagel seasoning. ITS SO GOOD😭 also love it on salads, pizza, soups!!!
What you should also do with your kids. Some Red Cabbage in a Blender then put the purple water in a Pot (or the Toilet) and pee on it. It will change the color and is quite fun with younger kids. Blue and green means good. If it turns pink/red or stays purple you should ear more Green vegetables. It shows if your pee is acidic ar alkaline and healthy would be alkaline (Blue, Green). Sorry for the off topic but you mentioned Kids and my Son loves it (but he is only 2 years young).
@@xperience-evolution thank you for sharing , as a 26 year old lady preparing myself to transition to motherhood in a few year, I have taken a screenshot of this .Adding it on my to-do-with kids list
Love the mushroom shirt! Also I used to sprout lentils - idk why I stopped. Would love to have some broccoli sprouts for sandwiches etc. Gotta go get some seeds!
Another great video. Very informational as usual. Just a note I have been sprouting seeds for a while now. For myself of course but also for my birds. My parakeets and cockatiels absolutely love them. Birds fed strictly on seeds will eventually die from malnutrition because seeds do not contain all the nutrients that they need. So adding these to your greens and to your protein that you give your bird aside from bird seed will help them nutritionally as well as help them live longer.
I have been sprouting and growing microgreens for over 30 years. I love them. While I grow many varieties for health my favorite taste wise is Fenugreek. I prefer my Sunflower seeds as micro greens. They are much easier to grow than many people claim. You do not need grow lights, a sunny window will do. Though you can use soil I prefer to use a soiless matt material made for growing this way. Along with Sunflower greens pea shoots and buckwheat lettuce are easy to grow this way too.
Sunflower micros are tricky, I've used soil, coco coir and paper towel so far. What type of mat do you use, the hemp ones? I've had the best luck with soil, but do find it messy.
@@mommaz820 You're not kidding they're tricky. I have given up on them many times throughout the years. Best tips I could give is use hemp felt to grow, I buy mine from the Sprout People. For cost effectiveness buy it in larger pieces or a roll, precut pieces are more expensive. I have been buying most of my supplies from them all these years. I slightly underwater so I don't get the rust look. I am a bit manic about picking out the shells as soon as I can without hurting the plant as they are the worst culprit for getting gross. I also under plant keeping the planter sparsely planted so they can breathe. I keep them out of the sun till the very last day.
I'm sprouting them together with lentils, but never cook. I use them in smoothies, salad, green energy soup or as a snack, full hand here and there. They sooo delicious when raw 😊
Perfect timing on this video. For the last couple of days I’ve been searching online for sprouting lids and seeds and trying to learn all I can. Very helpful!
I bought a sprouting glass can from "GEFU" - it also keeps the water from getting on your countertops. Don't know if you can get them in the US, but I recommend it a lot. Best wishes from Camilla in Denmark 🍀
Omg. This video is just what I needed! I recently ordered organic grains and seeds (for sprouting) from my area and didn't have the motivation to start yet. This is a sign😂 Thanks a lot!🙏♥️
Beautiful! I reckon you should upload a time lapse video of every sprouting you do ... where else can you watch a thousand new lives spring to life in just a few minutes? How about a “Sprout Sunday”?

This was sooo helpful and I didn't even think to try sprouting quinoa and sunflower seeds!!😊❤ I found a sprouter at our local farmers market and you buy them by trays. Once they are finished you bring the empty trays back to get re-fills at a discount-love it, but want to try on my own too.😁
Thanks Derek! This is so helpful and the timelapse was cool to see! I’ve wanted to sprout but keep telling myself it’s too hard! I feel like I could give it a go now! 👍🌱

Haven’t tried it yet, am a little concerned about bacteria😂🙈 I get them pretty cheap in the supermarket, but definitely want to try it at home🌱 love the shirt☺️
If it helps I've been sprouting for years and never had any bacteria issues but rinsing with citric acid really helps so try that next time if you are worried!
Growing your own bean sprouts is also my favorite part of gardening. They are so easy to grow and nutritious, so grow your own instead of buying them outside.
I like to do a 5 minute pre rinse/quick soak in the jar with water and a splash of hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) to ensure the seeds and jar/lid are nice and sanitized. After the 5 minutes I drain, rinse and refill to do the regular first/initial soak. It is a nice little peace of mind for nervous sprouters and you can use what you already have in the medicine cabinet.
I LOVE sprouts! Just got some trays recently. Having good luck with mung bean and radish sprouts. Unfortunately, not having luck with Broccoli sprouts ): Going to use your tips next time, Derek, thank you 🙏🏽

Coming to Tigh-na-Mara in May....hoping that's a good time, weather wise, to come out there. I'm sure it will be beautiful, looking forward to it!!
Thank you for this, Derek. I bought seeds for sprouting, but just haven't gotten around to getting started. Still have my sprouting lids from many, many years ago when we were young and did this. Am going to get my seeds soaking today.
Woohoo 🎉🥦🌱❤ been sprouting for decades but never did a time lapse, thanks for that, very cool 😎 Buckwheat also one of my favorite sprouts, and wheat berry sprouts can be fun too. Going to turn some of those quinoa sprouts into rejuvelac and make fermented nut & seed cheeses?
I’m going to try that tip about adding citric acid. I haven’t heard that before. Thank you for a great video! Also, a friend introduced me to Easy Sprout containers which are awesome. I’ve had issues sprouting in the past but these consistently turn out fantastic sprouts. (My friend carried them in his luggage so he could sprout while traveling - that’s how good they are!) They make it super easy. Highly recommend!
I love that 'sprouts' are so popular now- my Welsh granny used to eat them every day on sandwiches. We call it 'watercress' or 'cress' this side of the pond. It costs about 30p at the supermarket 😅. Love that everyone is taking this classic and making it cool again though 😊
I LOVE sprouts! I found a VERY inexpensive, and a VERY easy way to grow sprouts! Cost about $3.75 plus the actual seeds!!! Soak them for 12 to 24 hrs, get a oil cooking screen w/ a handle, and a plastic Tupperware cake holder, I get everything I need (OIL SCREEN, CAKE HOLDER, AND EVEN THE JAR TO SOAK THEM IN LOL) from the $1.25 store, aka The Dollar Tree. Anyways after soaking the sprouts turn the oil screen upside down, (so the handle is on bottom) and spread the seeds on top of the screen, put in the cake Tupperware, when u have to rinse them just take the screen and spray them right off, they get attached to the screen fairly quickly so it's super easy to rinse them, and they dry quickly as well!!! Mine end up growing HUGE and super straight and when they ard ready you just literally grab a bunch and they come right off!!!❤❤❤
Thanks for the tip about the citric acid! I have the jars and tops. I really love broccoli sprouts but only one store near me sells them and they are really expensive!
Thank you for this! I've wanted to try, but have been too scared because of all the horror stories about salmonella. Going to order some sprouting lids right now!
I don't know if this tip works better but after rinsing I let them roll in the container so they are more spread out, just so they don't all sit in the bottom like at 1:52
Interesting about the mustard seeds. I had a container of mustard seeds from the local restaurant supply store that was at least 5 years old, and I planted them in my garden on a whim. I had mustard plants out the wazoo! and reaped quite a harvest. I was shocked and pleased.
Hi Derek, try soaking your mustard seeds for just 2-4 hours. This works for me. I live in the tropics, so I do 2 hours. You may need to go a bit longer.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. I have been sprouting for 25+ years. I started out sprouting lentils and peas only using a repurposed sauerkraut jar (wide mouth ) with a piece of nylon window screen and from the hardware store and an elastic band, and then progressed into other seeds. I now use wide mouth mason jars with stainless steel screens and lids. Really easy to clean and sanitize. I also grow micro greens as well. This is a great way to continue gardening year round here in Canada. I also find mustard a little problematic. If you are looking for something with a little heat , radish seeds sprout really easily. 🌱💚🇨🇦 A great source for seeds in Canada are Mums Sprouts in Parkside Saskatchewan, better price and quality, and free shipping with $40 order in Canada , and $100 in the United States. Happy sprouting everyone. 🌱🌱💪💪
I live in the tropic and jar sprouting doesn’t allow enough air flow, so after a few trial and error I stick to tray sprouting and it works fine. Keep the spray water cool, it helps
For literally decades I have hung on to my sprouting jars, but stopped sprouting because of the contamination concerns. This has inspired me to get back in the game! Sprouts are a delicious addition to salads and sandwiches. I miss them! In my area (Pacific Northwest), we tend to have trouble finding specialty items. So, my biggest concern now is where to find organic sprouting seeds. Does anyone have recommendations on the best places to purchase sprouting seeds? Great job as always, Simnett!
Thanks so much! I'm glad this has inspired you. I have found the brand Now Real foods to offer a lot of seeds for sprouting that are tested for any issues. I buy them at Choice Market.
Definitely worth the watch, last year I tried again and failed, even took it with me camping, more sunlight because we're in the woods so if it's cloudy for a week...nada! Will try them again. I'm thinking the video I watched before must have lived in a sunnier area and only rinsed once a day! QUESTION: is there a place to find the protein amounts for the various sprouts? Thank you!!
So glad I discovered this channel. And I see you don't need to spread them in the jar after rinsing, like other people do. I also started sprouting. Sadly I think my broccoli sprout seeds are dud (after like 5 days only a few sprouted a bit)
The sprouts I love the most are fenugreek seeds. They're not too small and not too big. Sadly there is always one black and rotten seed in there after sprouting and then I chuck everything... Also, some seeds like arugula or cress can't be sprouted in a mason jar. You need to grow them on cotton/paper towels or something else where they can grow upwards.
Mustards need to stratify before sprouting. Wet them and drain well. Really well. Pop them in the freezer. I can't remember how long but I think between 1 to 3 days. Thaw with the soaking water. You will also want lots of UV b light.
I love to season and dehydrate the lentil sprouts. They are great to add a crunchy bite to salads, soups and sandwiches or just as a snack! I haven’t been successful at sprouting sunflower.
Can't wait to try this out! Used to eat sprouts all the time at home as a kid but kind of forgot about them over the years. Definitely one of my favorites back then!
Nice! I do the tray and soil method. Donny greens is the guy i learn from. I did the jar thing but didnt like watering all the time. With trays i just water twice and i'm done
Great video! Thanks for getting the info out there. I love sprouting! I always have alfalfa, lentils and mung beans sprouting. I didn’t realize you could sprout sunflower seeds, I thought they could only be grown as a micro green. So thanks for that information. I really try to like broccoli sprouts, but they are just so strong tasting. I sprout them occasionally just to see if I can handle them and every time, I’m like, nope! 😂 Anyway, thanks again. ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. Your video is by far the best for detail and information on growing sprouting seeds (as a newbie) I have delved into today. Sending you gratitude and blessings galore. 🙏🏽🌱
I have a couple "Easy Sprout" sprouters, they're supposed to work better than Mason jars. I have trouble finding ways to eat all the sprouts before they go bad. Great video and sprouts are awesome.
Great video! I have been sprouting seeds for a while. I buy organic sprouting seeds in bulk from a Canadian company. I should get more alfalfa, I found them to be the best on avocado toast 😍
When my stepsons were small and came to live with us, the older one was your standard 'picky eater'.

Can't we just blend them?
@@BornvsMe I am just leaving this comment here so that when you get a response to this ,I will be notified.
@BornvsMe yes. Blend with mustard seed to increase the effectiveness. After blended for no more than 30 seconds, let it sit for at least 5 minutes

This is one of the best videos i saw on sprouting seeds. Can u show how to sprout peanuts
Can't wait to try this out! Used to eat sprouts all the time at home as a kid but kind of forgot about them over the years. Definitely one of my favorites back then!
Loved your sprout post on Instagram. So glad you shared the process here!! Thank you
Very interesting, I am experimenting with whole grain porridge now, germinating the grains for 2 days before . And - awesome T-Shirt by the way 🍄👍
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Will try thank you!
You're welcome!
I recently began my sprouting journey and found your video to be very informative ! 👍👍😊
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. Your video is by far the best for detail and information on growing sprouting seeds (as a newbie) I have delved into today. Sending you gratitude and blessings galore. 🙏🏽🌱
What is your experience with Kale sprouts? anything different than other sprouts?
I have a couple "Easy Sprout" sprouters, they're supposed to work better than Mason jars. I have trouble finding ways to eat all the sprouts before they go bad. Great video and sprouts are awesome.
I LOVE sprouts! This was very informative!! Thank you for being so thorough. I am excited to get started w my jars and lids and seeds
Great video! I have been sprouting seeds for a while. I buy organic sprouting seeds in bulk from a Canadian company. I should get more alfalfa, I found them to be the best on avocado toast 😍
