I hold water in my mouth and swallow just as I feel I'm about to hiccup which prevents it from happening. Do this 5 -10 times and they stop. It's never failed me.
I hold my breath and relax my diaphragm. I had noticed in the past that when I had hiccups my stomach felt tight, so I started relaxing my stomach and holding my breath. It works for me!
Me too, every time I would get hiccups I would sit down and hold my breath for as long as I could as if I was underwater as a kid and then I would exhale and take another deep breath and hold it as long as I could and every single time the hiccups will go away. Everybody that I have told about this secret, it has worked for them every time.

9 out of 10 times, my hiccup starts *THE VERY MOMENT* I put my head on the pillow to go to sleep... When i hicc, I don't play around, I do it loud and aggressively, and I don't stop... I can literally hicc for 2-4 hours and there's no sleep that night. I'm familiar with the other 3 methods, which never work, but the paperbag one is new to me. I'll try that one. Definitely worth a try. And the explanations as to the why, how and when seem reasonable to me. On a sidenote, my hiccups have drastically decreased in frequency to now being quite rare since I started on healthy Keto, so clearly something has changed. Eric Berg has been my main mentor on the keto path, and it has been a major success, major benefits, so much appreciation from me. I'm grateful.
This might sound insane but I learned how to stop my hiccups by doing very slow and deep inhales, calming my brain and thinking to myself “I am no longer going to hiccup” I do my best not to anticipate the next hiccup. And I swear to god it stops instantly. I even tried this method with friends and it worked! They were astounded. I’m convinced more than ever that The mind is a very powerful tool. And we probably can do far more then we’re taught with it.
I can stop hiccups. I have done this to many people and can only remember one that was a "tough case". How? Do this: Get the person to sit right in front of you. No laughing, giggling or talking. Tell them to STARE into your eyes as you stare into theirs. Tell them to look at nothing but into your eyes. Tell them to hold this position for at least 30-60 seconds. Then ask them to hiccup. They cannot! It really, really works! People have thought I was some sort of hiccup magic maker by doing this. I don't know why it works but it does in most all cases.

The way I cure hiccups is holding my breath as long as I can. This always helps me. I was also put on Gerd medicine and I did not know it was for Gerd until I looked it up.
You did it again! Thank you Dr Berg! While watching this video, I exhaled and didn't breathe in for about 40 seconds... Hiccups stopped. I also like using mind over body control (when I can) and that works if I can concentrate enough. This time, after yesterday's hernia surgery, there was just too much discomfort for that. Thanks again Dr!
I get frequent hiccups, especially when I bend to pick something up…..thanks for explaining. Have you heard of “shuttered”or “stuttered” breathing? I’ve been experiencing this….your thoughts….thanks….

Friend, you just helped me out big time! I had a lumbar epidural for my spine pain earlier today, and this evening I came down with a case of the hiccups that wouldn’t go away for hours on end. It’s a common side-effect to the injection, and it was driving me mad because I couldn’t sleep (it was too late to call my doc for help). I tried over a dozen UA-cam remedies over and over again (even my own typical hiccup cure had zero effect), even combining a few of them. I would’ve looked insane to anyone who saw me 😅. I finally stumbled across your comment here on Dr Berg’s video, and your technique was the ONLY one that stopped the onslaught of hiccups. Thank you to the moon and back, and I hope others who are suffering can find your comment! 🙌
I had hiccups for 12 days straight. Doctors and tests no help. Finally I tried back flow by self-inducing vomiting. This worked. I think a tiny fruit seed got lodged in that GERD valve but was finally dislodged by the reverse flow. Thoughts?
Eating a spoonful of peanut butter will cure hiccups everytime, it doesn’t make sense but it really works. I learned this from my grandmother when I was a small child. I’m in my mid 40’s now and it has never failed to work to this day.
Drinking water upside down ALWAYS works for me because you are supposed to place your diaphragm right over the edge of the bed so you are stretching it out to stop the spasm. Hold as much water in your mouth as possible, keep it in your mouth, flip over onto a bed or couch with your diaphragm right over the edge, take small gulps of the water, take 4 or 5 more gulps once the water is done, then just breathe. Flip over and no hiccups
Thanks for the info on hiccups as I get them often. Here is what I do, and it works fairly well: each ear has a horizontal ridge in the outer ear. I place my thumbs under each and press upwards and maintain that pressure for about 30 to 40 seconds. You may call that the "Lewis maneuver"
Dr. Berg, I have R-CPD (inability to burp for others reading), and my hiccups usually occurs when I intake excessive carbonated beverages. At one point, my hiccups have lasted for over a month without pause. Are my hiccups also likely to be related to the CO2/O2 disassociation curve or would it be necessary to take treatment to train my ability to burp? - It is worth noting that during the month of where the hiccups persisted, I do believe I had excessive levels of stress which would have affected my O2 intake.
Thank you for this explanation! I found that raising my both arms straight up over my head and breathing slowly, deeply, stoped my hiccups many, many times. I use this practice now, when necessary. It felt like it had smth to do with air pressure in the "pipes" or some inner "tubes"🙂. Slow, deep breathing and raised arms. Dr. Berg, your video explains even better now🙂👍. Thank you!
This is a very relevant video for me. I get persistent hiccups that lasts for several hours everytime I try to clear throat or start coughing. Holding breath, warm water and all sorts of grandmas recipe sometimes work, sometimes not. Chewing lemon however works instantly, I thought it was sourness that's making me forget hiccups but turns out its the acid.
1 - Breathing inside a clean plastic bag for about 20 seconds, fixed it right there and then for me!! breathing in the carbon dioxide for a small period of time really works. 2 - Drinking water slowly for as long as you can without pausing, also works great as you breath in carbon dioxide as u keep breathing inside the glass/ bottle ( with big hole opening )
It does work immediately ! I got up this morning with bad hiccups, I drew you up on the net and I tried your advice. Simply breathe thru my nose, hold 5 sec. Breathe in and hold 5 sec. Breathe out and hold 5 sec. - instantly st
thank you for this, I suffered hiccuping fits for a few years after my car accident but maybe a different kind of one, caused by trauma. they were very loud long deep and would last more than a 24 hour window, cause me to lose my voice and my throat would close..my neighbors could hear they were so loud.. I did get trauma to my ribcage and could feel vibration and snapping around my diaphram also it affected my heart, there was an issue there and gurgling.. My GP said the only time he ever saw those to be after major heart surgeries, they put me on high dose of baclofen.. so happy to be over those days.
I have never had an issue with hiccups. Whenever I feel like I am about to get one or hiccup once, I somehow move (?) by abdomen or rather contract it and it goes away. Heh. Still, very useful to know this, it is very sad to see people get frustrated with hiccups after they have been having them for hours.
I kinda do the same thing, i also try to squeez al the air out of my longs and try to burp without swallowing the burp. Even if the burp doesnt come its allways over in just a few seconds. Havnt found anyone who could do that to untill now.
Thank you!!!!!!! I have had hiccupped for 3 days. It's been Painful. I did a full day fast and drank nothing but water and still got the hiccups. The CO2/too much oxygen was genius.
I exhale as much as possible, then hold as long as possible, even through the hiccups. I take my next breath slowly and in control, no gasping. Repeat once or twice. Always works for me.
I just took a DEEP breath in . Held it for as long as I can & they stop 😊 try holding your breath for 70 secs & releasing tiny breaths every 30 seconds.
I just went on a cruise last week abs almost immediately on the first day started getting hiccups every day . I couldn’t figure out exactly why all of a sudden on the cruise I was getting crazy episodes of hiccups. I did not eat horribly but I did eat a lot of things I don’t eat at home . Perhaps the ph was a factor for me .
I've had hiccups since before i was born, ask my mom! I still have the hiccups regularly. What helps me is to breath out and not breath in for as long as possible.
This makes so much sense! Thanks Dr. Berg. I always get hiccups whenever I eat spicy foods, which I love lol. I try to eat too fast to get it down hence the hiccups. I lean forward into a 45 degree angle and drink water in that position and it goes away.
Note to self: CO2 is needed for O2 absorption in the body, similar to Calcium/Lime plaster needing Terminalia Chebulia to produce CO2 which gets absorbed by the plaster CaCo3.
So my dad has had chronic hiccups for 7 years... sometimes it stops his breathing and he has to gag in order to breath. No doctors know what causes it nor really care to treat it.
My Mom always said “Don’t eat/drink so much (super size me) at a meal “. My sister and bro in law have gerd and have bee on he meds for years. I notice if I eat too much at any one time, I feel the indigestion and food seems to come up into my esophagus. I’ve never had gerd and don’t take meds for it. She also said “don’t eat or drink a lot before physical work or bending down - too much pressure on this same area will cause those problems”. I find when I eat something dry, it can cause hiccups, too. Too big a bite also. I remind myself I’m not in a race to finish “first” . 😂
@@bluespruce679 good for you! I’ve also been on keto and IF you several years now too. Dry meats like roasted chicken breast, hamburger, dry stuff can be on a keto first too. I’ve been trying to perfect some keto sauces to drizzle on the ones I find too dry , 😂. Maybe they’ll become famous. 😉
This explains it. My 100% fool-proof method, works for me instantly every time: Take a very deep breath and hold it THROUGH the next spasm, then very slowly exhale. It's never failed me yet.
So glad I searched Dr. Berg’s videos for help with my hiccups! I have been coughing due to a cold, which probably caused the hiccups which I think then caused my stomach ph to be off causing gas buildup in my stomach. Totally makes sense.
You can also "think off" hiccups if you know how. It's almost like a meditative state. Once you pass the period when a hiccup was due, you can feel a slight anxious buildup in your chest. If you stay focused (holding your breath may help but best you just STOP breathing, not HOLD it which is done by locking. If you lock your breath shut you won't be relaxed). It varies but usually if you pass that hiccup when it was due and stay relaxed and focused, it'll go away in about 2 mins. Sometimes if you go right back to eating or drinking it'll restart. Like I said you can usually "feel" when you're clear to go back to normal. The quicker the hiccups the harder this method usually is to succeed with but I've done it for years. Now at about a 75% success rate.
I suffer from hiccups quite frequently compared to a normal person, but they're mostly triggered by dry food like sausages, bread (well, that's not an issue anymore since I do keto!) or even cheese. Holding my breath and drinking doesn't work quickly most of the time, so I'm definitely going to try a bag next time!
Thanks, Doc. In the past I have actually drank H2O upside down and it usually works, but not always. I had no idea it was an excess of CO2. If I ever get hiccups again I'll try the holding breath, breathing slowly, or even a bag. Also, for those suffering acid reflux, I used to also but got rid of that with a 3 day fast; you'd be amazed how your body can heal over a 3 day fast, including your immune system. Cheers.
Great video and very layperson understandable. Please do one on the bases of yawning and why it seems to be a chain affect to others. I can harly type this comment without yawning now.
It’s a stress reliever. May want to use b1 as Benfotiamine and Dr Berg’s electrolytes (especially for a high amount of potassium and more magnesium citrate) to release the stress way easier.
Extraneous question: Once in a while, maybe once a month, I get one single, startling loud hiccup. Any idea what that's about? I asked my other elderly friends, and this has started happening to them, too. We just giggle about it and ignore it, but it would be fun to know why this has become a thing. Love your videos.
Are you really asking an aging and elderly body to know what it's doing? Humorously said, because I can get hiccups and cough and get a pain in my foot all at once!!
@@wendy833 For the ones that last hours, Dr. Berg's solutions don't work for you? I hold my breath INSTANTLY. When the next hiccup happens, I stop holding my breath so I can quickly grab another breath and hold it again, and so on. The serial hiccups stop quickly for me. It's the single ones that are weird to me. And they are so loud, strangers can pivot in concern to see what on earth is so wrong that I gasped so loudly. lol And I just grin and say Ignore me--that's just my Tourette hiccup. lol That's my nickname for it.
I found a 2-seconds ready method...that also tastes good 🙂 take a teaspoon of sugar. Add fresh lemon drops on it (lemon must completely soak the sugar). Take a big breath and eat it all at once. done! It took me longer to write this than it takes to do it. Sometimes, when the hiccup is really strong, one might need to take two teaspoons. I read it somewhere ages ago....I used it all my life, and use it on my daughter too, passing the knowledge through generations 😅 You're welcome.
I get violent hiccups and none of those triggers are my triggers.. All I have to do is bend the wrong way.. I think I have both a navel hernia and a hiatal hernia and i'm not sure which one is causing it.. Holding breath, ect dont work at all.. All I have to do is take 1 sip of a drink and lay sideways against my bed pillows and it happens.. I go through the VA so obviously they arent going to do jack about it until my insides actually twist up real bad..
@@experimenthealthyketo83 yeah but it is horrible if get mouthfuls of acid in the night or when you cough on it and it goes up into your sinuses. Its hard to get the acids out from the upper parts of your throat/sinuses no matter how many chewable tablets of milk you try to drink to get rid of it
@@rosedolch8637 I see. This is going to look crazy but these tablets and the milk worsen this situation. As explained in Dr Berg’s videos on acid reflux/gerd, ect, this situation happens because there’s not enough acid in the stomach and the stomach muscle squeezes itself in the attempt to find more acid to do its work of digesting. So by squeezing, some of the little stomach acid remaining splashes up in the œsophages tube, throat, ect. Because the stomach is in painful need of more acid to digest the foods you gave him to digest! Dr Berg explained all this in a less crazy way in videos on stomach acid. I hope this will help you.
I'm literally on the verge on tears, I was having a bad episode and I have GERD and never knew the two were related. Thank you Dr. Berg for curing my hiccups!
Why do you keep using a writing pen that is so light in color that we can barely read what you have written? Please get another brighter color or a new pen to write with! I don’t want to miss anything you share!
This works for me every time, and my friend finally tried it after saying these things never work and it worked for him too. I used to get hiccups at work daily and did this everyday and everyday it worked. Drink a cup of water while holding your nose shut so you can't breath. Chug it until you can't. Keep holding nose shut and breathe out mouth a few times after chugging. They gone
When I was a kid my mom would apply pressure to the bridge of our noses with her thumb and forefinger, hold for about 30 seconds and the hiccups would stop. Weird, but it worked.
The left ear lobe is a pressure point connected to the stomach. Holding the bottom of the left ear lobe between thumb and pointer finger and then firmly pressing and massaging the lobe will 9 times out of 10, bring instant relief.
I can tell you personally, no. I still have them and my patients think its the funniest thing. "O, you got the hiccups again." "Yep, everyday for 3 years now." Lol.
@@Leslie83249 Hey Leslie, it's been 11 months since you posted. Have you heard about HiccAway yet? We were on Shark Tank with a device that stops hiccups.
I found something that works every time to stop my hiccups. Take a deep breath and hold it, take a sip of water then blow out a little air. Repeat this until you have released the whole breath. Do not breath in during this process. You will feel a little air bubble release and the hiccups are gone . I have shared this with everyone I see with hiccups and it has worked for them.
Dr. Berg I love you and the information that you freely put on the Internet. Having said that My understanding of a hiccup is a vacuum that spent formulated in my stomach. And the way I hear it is by sipping water and swallowing as many times as possible until the cups stop usually it’s only 30 or 40 swallows very small swallows. It works every single time.
My brother, who is 36 now, has been suffering from uninterrupted hiccups. Doctors have made enough experiments on him but failed. Can some one or specially Dr. Berg recommend any remedy or a treatment that can help him. Looking forward.
I've almost always been able to get rid of my hiccups from imagining I don't have them. I'll breathe normally, no coughing or talking, just breathe slowly and just imagine you don't have them. 99 percent of the time this works, never knew why. Made me wonder if it's just psychological and the thought of having them is triggering them.
I have not had the hiccups in 30 years because I learned how to relax my diaphragm. It will instantly stop the hiccups. I've tried the breathing into a bag when I was young and it never worked. How do you relax your diaphragm? Ever get that sick, sinking feeling in your stomach? That's they way you relax your diaphragm. Try to do this for your first hiccup and they'll stop instantly.
Thanks for this. I can share this with my colleague who suffers from frequent hiccupping. I also watched your video on panic attacks. I used to get those - badly! - and I see why my desperate (self-taught) method worked.
Thx a lot …this worked for me ! I breathed into my hands closed to reduce oxygen into my lungs and it worked within two minutes of breathing . Appreciated
Helpful maybe to someone. Drinking 2 or more swallows of pickle juice while holding a deep breath works everytime for me. In my case just holding my breath works 50/50 of the time
I’ve personally learned how to relax the muscle/diaphragm and get it to stop spasms that cause hiccups. I’ve taught several people how it’s actually pretty easy. Concentrate on the area of the spasm and you’ll be able to learn to calm the spasm. I’ve done it for years. Works every time.

Try to breathe in and out at the same time. It's impossible to do so, but it forces the air up out of the diaphragm, and it works!
Just simply breathe all the way in and all the way out 2-5 times and they will be no more
The hiccups is just your diaphragm spasming. So bend over backwards as far as you can, that stretches the diaphragm and sorts the problem instantly.

Chewing lemon however works instantly, I thought it was sourness that's making me forget hiccups but turns out its the acid.
The only video that helped me really really appreciate it 🙏🏼
That happened to me a lot esp. when I was a kid. That's great to know more information. Thanks to Dr. Berg for his great solutions for every problem.
We always say "oh no!" Right after the very first hiccup, and it always makes them go away immediately. Sounds dumb, but I swear it works!
interesting!

@@experimenthealthyketo83 well, I do drink a daily cup of (diluted) apple cider vinegar. So I'm sure that's working in my favor! Good to know.
@@KtCleansAlot Wow a full cup of apple cider vinegar diluted? Or a cup of water with some apple cider vinegar in it?
It does work immediately ! I got up this morning with bad hiccups, I drew you up on the net and I tried your advice. Simply breathe thru my nose, hold 5 sec. Breathe in and hold 5 sec. Breathe out and hold 5 sec. - instantly st
Love learning what the cause it and truly understanding the answer! 👏🏻❤️
thank you for this, I suffered hiccuping fits for a few years after my car accident but maybe a different kind of one, caused by trauma. they were very loud long deep and would last more than a 24 hour window, cause me to lose my voice and my throat would close..my neighbors could hear they were so loud..
Same. The key is to really push on how long you hold your breath. Just holding it until it's mildly uncomfortable doesn't work.
This one just worked for me
I just took a DEEP breath in . Held it for as long as I can & they stop 😊 try holding your breath for 70 secs & releasing tiny breaths every 30 seconds.
Similar to my method: I hold my nose and drink five to seven gulps of water without getting air with it. Works every time.
I tried to fill my lungs with air and stop breathing for 30seconds and hiccups are gone...thanks God
I just take a DEEP breath and exhale a TINY bit of air very SLOWLY. Works every time.
Now I know WHY it works! Thanks Dr. Berg!
Worked 100% thanks. I breathed in and out of a plastic bag for a little and it helped relieve my hiccups.
Holding my breath always works for me, really fast. Takes like 20 seconds of holding then the hiccups stop :)
wow great video, one of your best i'd say, love the explanation about acid reflux, 1st time I've heard about the PH sensors, that makes perfect sense!
So why don’t hiccups occur when one works out? Lots of oxygen intake then. I get hiccups often but never during cardiovascular exercise.
My guess is because the body needs more O2 during exercise and probably struggles to reach that O2/CO2 balance let alone go over?
Because you adapting to increased CO2 at the same time. Working out doesn't lower CO2 BUT very good question.
I have to remind myself I don’t have to eat as fast as my friends for some reason I try to keep up with them it’s ridiculous
I hold my breath and it worked. Thanks for explaining the science behind it.
Dr berg is immortal and he's finally able to teach the human race through UA-cam, you guys don't understand this guy has lived many lifetimes
This explains it. My 100% fool-proof method, works for me instantly every time: Take a very deep breath and hold it THROUGH the next spasm, then very slowly exhale. It's never failed me yet.
Learning so much from you Dr Berg. Thank you for all your research and all the utube videos. You're an excellent doctor.
So glad I searched Dr. Berg’s videos for help with my hiccups! I have been coughing due to a cold, which probably caused the hiccups which I think then caused my stomach ph to be off causing gas buildup in my stomach. Totally makes sense.
I stick my fingers in my ears then gulp down hard on cold water. Works every time.
Hiccups may be prevented by having enough stomach acid.
I almost never get hiccups.
When I do, I hold my breath for 20 seconds.
Same here but I hold breath for a bit longer. I try for 1 min.
That's nice. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful video Dr. Berg! Thank you for all the helpful knowledge you provide!
I have been looking for what causes hiccups since a year.. noww I got it from you Dr! Thanks a lotttt!!
Cheers.
Please come back n tell me more
Great video and very layperson understandable.
@@kathym6603 LOL. Yep, I got the humor immediately! 🤣
@@sleepycalico I get them 1,2 or 3 and then done. Or I can get them for hours.
Sometimes happens to me but it’s always a short while after eating, maybe due to breathing in air.
Hiccups may be prevented by having enough stomach acid.
I've been asking the same question over and over. Once again, Dr Berg, please use a dark colour ink marker
They gone
You forgot the most effective method. Get a friend to scare you with a shock by hiding in a corner 😂
Lol
Hiccups may be prevented by having enough stomach acid.
When I was a kid my mom would apply pressure to the bridge of our noses with her thumb and forefinger, hold for about 30 seconds and the hiccups would stop. Weird, but it worked.
Nope. Theres only 1 solution that has ALWAYS worked for me and it's not these
What has worked for you?
@@CandaceTarbat it's a secret 😜
The left ear lobe is a pressure point connected to the stomach. Holding the bottom of the left ear lobe between thumb and pointer finger and then firmly pressing and massaging the lobe will 9 times out of 10, bring instant relief.
I wonder if cases of hiccups have decreased over the past two years with the use of masks.
As always, thanks Doc! Love the videos.
Well hiccups have decreased among some of the people who DIDN'T wear a mask. RIP. 😷
I use 1 or two paper towels over a cup of water and drink the water over the paper towels. Works everytime.
Just doing nothing and concentrating on the sensatons always woks for me. I learnt this during a meditation retreat.
I get the hiccups ALL. THE. TIME. I simply hold my breath and relax my body. Works like a charm.
Have enough stomach acid prevents it to happen in the first place.
Awesome, going to try that
I have not had the hiccups in 30 years because I learned how to relax my diaphragm.
Dr. Berg I love the way you explain things and YOUR LOGICAL WAY of find the ROOT PROBLEM and SOLUTION
Appreciated
Most welcome!
