  • 🎙️ Rethinking Muscle Spasm: How Misdiagnosis Can Lead to Chronic Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is frequently diagnosed as muscle spasm or supposedly caused by tight muscles, but is this really the whole story? Of course it is not.
Muscles are reactionary tissues and they respond to a stimulus. Where we have tightness or painful spasm in the lower back this is of course going to be unhelpful. However, the muscle spasm itself is not the cause of the lower back pain. Today we explain precisely how muscles work. We go on to help you better understand the presence of muscle spasm in lower back injuries as well as how this is understandably unhelpful!
Hopefully by the end of this, you'll firmly understand why muscle spasm in the lower back is a problem, but is not the problem. In doing so you'll have gained and understanding of your own lower back and be able to move forwards resolving the underlying cause of your lower back pain, rehabilitating properly and ultimately getting back to the things you want to do, without pain!

I had a hiking fall that hut my r shoulder and also twisted my trunk and jammed my heel. After the fall my priority pain recovery was my shoulder as it was the most used limb. Now 40 months later my lower back (trunk) developed spasms and it was hard to identify what was going on. My PT had me foam roll out the tightness which did help send the realy pain (location) to my brain which now is able to pinpoint the exact joint which the tightness was protecting. If I touch that spot (two days after rolling/identifying the pain) I will hit the floor with a nerve twitch just with a touch. Prior to rolling, my body did not know where the exact problem was. I can relate to the body reacting to pain but not knowing exactly where the target is, just tighten here or there. Thanks for the awareness to share this.

Wish you where my specialist…..I was told that my lower back and hip pain was basically not mechanical and that I should learn to live and walk through the pain by my Musculoskeletal specialist. My body disagreed and started to drop my blood pressure so low I suffer syncope issues.

I didn’t injure my back as far as I know. I just awoke in the middle of the night to spasms. I’m convinced at this point it’s from statins.

Excellent advice! Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist (Spinal Lead) says we need to treat the symptoms and the cause is not relevant. I don't think so and believe that unnecessary suffering and disability often results.

    • @BackInShapeProgram
      @BackInShapeProgram  10 місяців тому +1

Yes that is exactly the reason why so many struggle to be honest, perhaps it works for some (for so long) but it clearly doesn't work for many and makes little sense. Also acknowledging the cause allows you to help the symptoms effectively. The thinking behind this seems to come from some more recent research which is shortsighted and perhaps being miss-interpreted by practitioners.

    • @graniabenge2814

I wish there were more practitioners like you who demonstrate such excellent clinical judgment. My current boss agrees with you, and his predecessor ( Spinal Surgeon now retired) would, too.

I'm trying to find information on proper breathing during the relief and stability exercises, breathing while engaging the core and how to not stop breathing. I've been trying to follow instructions breathing with my diaphragm but still feel out of breath

I was told by a physiotherapist that sometimes people present with the same images that were on my MRI scan, and can be a-symptomatic and so I shouldn't put the issue down to what looks like a bulged and dehydrated L5-s1, narrowing of sacroiliac joints, some scoliosis and a bunch of other jargon that i'm still getting my head around. Even though, it feels like exactly what the problem is because I have lower back and hip pain, so i won't rule it out.
My PT has told me to focus on glute strength with bridges to start with (since my left hip was tighter)...just wondering if the slight curvature to the left of my spine may contribute to tightness on that side 🤔. Sorry for the long message but do you have any thoughts on this?

❓❔So my GP said by back pain is muscle spasms and its not serious, he said that 10 years ago. Now my life feels destroyed. I have pain all the time I can only walk 30mins then I have to lay down. All I'm offered is stretching therapy I refused them now days as never worked before, or therapy to come to terms with living with pain! (wtf!) I refuse to come to terms with pain everyday.
I've been on morphine patched but they were making night spasms worse at night!.
Can you please give a link to the lower back strengthening exercises please? I'm desperate.

I have been misdiagnosed twice now. I have 3 premature degenerative dics at my lower spine to my pelvis. I know have the MRI but he gave me spasm medication so I have been looking at stem cell therapy as my gel in between the dics have gone, show me what I need to do to help my discs

Stem cells can be a great therapy and it makes a lot of sense, just make sure you're doing proper rehabilitative work. You'll find the combination will make for a much more effective outcome :)

Ive had an herniated disc in the bottom of my back since February which is pressing the nerve of my right leg. So i have constant lower back pain, constant tight full back, a numb tingly foot and some sciatic pain down into my thigh. I got sent to specialist who referred me to physio. Physio said not much he can do until the injured disc heals, either over time by itself or through surgery as any programme/exercises to help strengthen my lower back area could potentially aggravate the disc further, slowing the healing process or making it worse. So the past 6mths ive been getting bad lower back spasms resulting in visiting A&E or the GP and thats all i get is take these pills twice a day and a sick note for work for 1 to 2 weeks. It starts affecting you mentally, not just physically. You feel you’re just being passed from pilar to post and nobody is actually helping to address the initial problem which is the herniated disc. Not muscle spasms!!

Sorry you've had such a poor experience, fundamentally, the advice seems to be lacking, definitely check out the program as the reality is that careful exercise that is guided and of the right sort is literally the safest thing you can do and missing out on that because exercise is "too dangerous" fails to understand the simple truth that you have to live life every day.
As a result many of the activities you are doing on a daily basis are problematic. here are two resources to help, the topic of surgery is really a good one - not because you need it but the podcast episode highlights some truths that seem to have been ignored by previous practitioners, the second is a link to the program which will help you move forwards.
