I wish I would ha e found this years ago. We searched and searched.

I'm a chronic nerve pain person, too. I just want to say thank you for articulating the experience so well. To be not just believed but validated is a pretty wonderful feeling.
Be kind to people, even when you don't understand their experience. Nobody would seek out this life, like a pauper-hermit, just to get out of going to work, I promise you.

@Ronald Krikorian Its a mouthful - "Adult onset tethered cord with giant intrasacral meningocele, " which has caused permanent damage to the nerves associated with the cauda equina, plus my spinal cord having been under tension for 30+ years, which also lead to lumbar arthritis and protruding discs and all that. I also have a connective tissue disorder that causes instability of the spine (all joints, really) so I go to the chiropractor multiple times a month to get everything put back where it belongs.

This is an intelligent, articulate, compassionate individual! I've been dealing with arrogant Dr's, careless surgeons, malpractice, misdiagnosis, incorrect medications and permanent disabilities. Intentional discrepancies of facts by physicians and am now permanently dependent on a wheelchair at 53. I am now on a helpful regiment of medications but the breakthroughs pains of late are upwards of 8 to 9 on the Richter scale. I applaud EVERYONE who will speak up against the drug companies and thank God in heaven there are Dr's like this gem that are eilling to share this information! Are you in Canada? I was 51, presented with a true and severe nerve compression injury and I was utterly gaslighted.
All ten doctors I saw at home misrepresented the truth, wrote fraudulent statements in their consult notes and I was purposely misdiagnosed!
They were covering up that metal had migrated in my body and wanted to avoid a lawsuit.
I’m lucky to be alive. I had to hire a registered nurse consultant to get the life saving and sanity sparing surgery I needed!
Doctors can no longer be trusted. They have lost true compassion and caring.

They treat me like I am crazy. It keeps getting more painful. I can't do this much longer. I have had 2 back surgeries and the last one helped for about a year and a half. Now it is Constantly severe pain. I am at a point I cannot stand or walk anymore. I pray every night to not wake tomorrow. I need a Dr that will believe the pain I am in. I am so done. @Callie And Her Sweethearts I have had back / leg nerve issues for over two decades. Have taken many different drugs (codeine, anti-inflammatories, Vioxx, Lyrica and now Gabapentin) for nerve pains over the years. I now have CKD (Chronic kidney disease) as a result. 3 operations later I am much improved but find I can not take less than 3x100mg Gabapentin as nerve pains return. I actually suspect possibly fibromyalgia and other weird leg sensations like restless legs is a precursor to nerve pain. I had restless legs syndrome before experiencing nerve pain. I still get the weird leg sensations now, but not as severe as before, because I don't wish to take more gabapentin. I found doxylamine succinate helps calm restless legs syndrome. I wouldn't be surprised if that could possibly help fibromyalgia sufferers too. I understand that is not addictive, or hasn't been for me. Worst thing about nerve pain medications is I found weight gain issues.

I was sent home and they didn’t even try to see what was wrong the doctor pressed my stomach once and I didn’t see her again. I too have never heard neuropathy explained in this way. I’m 54, and have had three back surgeries, discectomies from T-1 through L-5, and lamiectomies, with spinal fusion, at all levels. I’ve just never been free of nerve pain, even after the surgery. I’m a nurse, and continue to work full time, battling nerve pain every day. People just have no idea how bad nerve pain really is. Along with the nerve pain, I have numbness and tingling from my lower back to my toes, and some days it feels like my legs are on fire. Thank God I’m able to get up and work most days! Remember, it could always be worse…..God Bless.

    Thankyou Dr. Ian.
As a chronic pain sufferer for 50 years. ( FYI Adhesions and fibromyalgia etc)
Diet changes and fasting etc have given me degrees of improvements...this talk is the next gift from the Lord in my journey of improvement.
Like many commenters I have been through the ropes of specialists , medications and mistreatment.
Being married to a wonderful doctor for over 40 years ( and knowing many dedicated doctors)
I do not resent them and realise they do their best for which I am grateful.
They do not know everything as my husband says ...and we are all learning always. We are also responsible for our own health as well. Having said that , I've had my share of frustration etc.
Let's move on from now, receive any help such as this and share our experience with others and doctors.
By the way , I'm a Christian so I pray for my doctors not just for myself.
My love and prayers go out to all who have and are suffering like myself.

Not only is this dude brilliant but he also knows how to approach and explain things that most people who are not M.D.s can in fact come to appreciate and from which to gain knowledge. I am so impressed by this 1.5-hour lecture. My brother has had 4 major back surgeries and suffers without break from nerve pain; I am convinced that his surgeons injured his nerves (plural !) to cause his pain. Unbelievably, since he visits doctors because of this pain (doctors who are incapable of helping him at all), some are convinced that he needs a "serious mental health evaluation," like patient "DS" in Dr. Carroll's talk.

Way back in 1976 when I was in the USN I sneezed really hard and bent over and ruptured a disc in my back. I had fallen several times before with no major issues. I think this may have contributed to what happened.
I was in severe pain and I was subjected to procedures that were supposed to help but only made the pain worse. I was finally placed in Bethesda naval hospital! They seemed to believe that I was "malingering" which is a term used to describe someone who is faking injury or pain to try to get out of duty. That was far from the case! I then needed to go through many tests which ended up being painful due to what was wrong with me. They finally decided that I had a ruptured disc and I needed surgery.
The next day after surgery I was urged to get up and walk and lo and behold the pain was gone!
About five years ago I started having issues with falling and to make a long story short I have severe diabetic polyneuropathy. I was misdiagnosed for 5 months and in extreme pain. It took another couple of months to convince somebody that I needed to see a neurologist. Meanwhile I was placed into a rehab where they kept trying to get me to walk at cetera without doing anything to help my excruciating pain. Even after I got my diagnosis from the neurologist they
would not prescribe anything strong enough because the doctors are all worried about the opioid crisis. Finally the neurologist
referred me to a pain center and they prescribed Tramadol which is the only thing that has helped me! Lyrical made me gain 100 pounds and become bedridden! After going off Lyrica and using Tramadol I lodt 94 lbs and am able to get around again... but I'm still considered disabled. Don't give up no matter how many times people try to tell you it's all in your head or it's some other thing that's causing your problem. You know your body they don't!

What it is difficult to explain to them, not just other people but Drs as well, is that things like Vicodin do not work on Neuropathic pain. Tramadol is a good starter, Percocet works, but the best thing I have found for my ruptured discs and degenerative disc disease is Suboxone. I will NEVER be pain free, but this makes it tolerable.

I have a phd I counseling and have fibromyalgia but didn't get it all. but I was excited that somebody knows about fibromyalgia.thank you Dr. carroll for presenting this.

Do doctors really think we have nothing to do but waste our time and Money to go in and complain of pain. Pain that is visibly ruining our quality of life. Studies prove men with same complaints get help without begging. Hope this has stopped. Back in 1980 it was prevelant when spikes of fibromyalgia reared it’s head across country . Dr Carrol, this is fantastic to hear you speak about this topic. I am a remedial therapist in Australia and I added on modalities of the nervous system, muscular skeletal therapy, the lymphatic system, reflexology, and the brain. You obviously have a huge understanding of this knowledge of nerve problems and the data charts of nerve referral connections to the area that the patient says the pain or stiffness stems from.
It’s all the nervous systems working here with any pain. Which after time causes referral pain that just is never ending. As this pain encompasses the whole body, I have treated my Fibromyalgia patients knowing using these references. I think Fibromyalgia could be caused systemically by years of referred pain. And have found Duloxitine is a great nerve suppressor.
It’s like an onion layer that needs to be slowly pulled apart. Knowing the sections of the body that main nerves from the spine refer to in functional response to Pain, can tell us so much. Especially if say the thecal sac was being pinched by a protruding disc or transverse joint that is out of its structural normal. This pain goes all around the body from tingling to aches in shoulders, scaps, neck, jaw, spine, toes, legs etc. The chemical imbalance that can arise from these body changed functions and alerts of pain often trigger chemical imbalance in the brain of Serotonin , epinephrin etc as you have said. The charts for referred nerve pain should be studied by all medical disciplines. As well as a much deeper understanding of how nerves work with the body. Duloxetine works for nerve pain very well and all associated chemical imbalances that can cause depression in this pain situation.
As for your. audience guy that spoke of getting into bed and having feet aches, stinging, hot or so annoying that you have to shake your leg or feet.I have found this is due to really tight calf muscles putting pressure on the nerve going down the outside of the lower leg. Trigger point massage and releasing parts of the calf muscle will stop this aching pain straight away. The patient needs to push hard into there calf muscles and find the spots of pain and massage deeply to relax the muscle.
Great great speech, your knowledge is so refreshing for all medical, natural and remedial healers out there.

Who, really, wants to be taking a medication that constipates them, then the constipation makes the lower back pain worse, and then you get headaches, which make you have a whole new set of problems, and so the hamster runs in the wheel. So informative! Not everyone who suffers pain needs a psych exam. Nor are a drug seeker. Those deflective assumptions occur far, far too often. Especially when the patient is a female.

In fairness, many medications and treatments had been tried. I think two things are at work, one is the persistent view that people are not in “real pain”, and that everyone likes the way narcotics make them feel, and therefore literally everyone is a drug seeker at some level. I would go as far as saying that most chronic pain sufferers would benefit from psychological and spiritual support. It wears a person down, and depression can easily complicate the picture. Further, sleep disturbances due to pain can prevent adequate REM sleep, leading to real psychological issues.

@@lilolmecj it's a combination of things, but denying a person anything that can bring some relief is inhumane.

No doubt psych attention is needed now. Trauma to the limbic and more all need careful professional asst.

@@lilolmecj Well if somedy is in pain enough not to be able to sleep, it is pretty much the lack of efficient enough a pain med. Opioids have no working limit nor any other limit as long as you are in pain. If it is not working properly, switch the medicine or the dosage. Side effects may appear if you raise the level too fast in any drug and no drug should be stopped all in a sudden. It has nothing to do with addiction but body adaptation! One reason it is gopd tp vary the dodage within a week or month.
Untreated pain can cause allodynia, rsd/crps even in three days and once untreated pain messes up your hart electricity, you are dead.
