I can’t thank you enough for this episode. I’m currently struggling with back pain, and this episode was like a gift, helping me understand its various causes and possible treatments. A big thank you to Dr. McGill for sharing your knowledge and to Prof. Huberman for conducting such an informative interview.
Dreamt about a family-member's back-pain issues last night and was thinking about it when this pops-up. I believe you have brought actionable, usefull information to so-many people that it is now statistically unlikely for at least one of your viewers to not have the exact next topic you're going to discuss on their mind the moment you post it. Thank you for your work, Prof. Huberman! ^^

Stu McGill really helped me turn a corner in helping my back issues Been in pain since 2003, and still am to this day But learning from him has helped me more than I can ever thank him So excited to hear this one
Am I the only one who feels like Dr. McGill was more interested in advertising himsels, rather than giving actual practical solutions? I mean, every question Huberman asks, he answers like "In my clinic, I would..." or "I would work with a patient and only then...". I had this very same feeling when watching his long interview with Bob&Brad, minimum practical/theoretical knowledge, maximum advertising one's services. And yes, I do understand that there are no simple answers to such a complex problem as back pain, but Huberman hosts all kinds of specialists, many of which spoke on some very complex issues and yet found a way to present them in a useful and helpful manner.
This is extraordinary. Definitely one of my favorite episodes! It is so gratifying to see professionals who walk their walk, and set a great example for those who follow them as in “this is what happens when you walk the walk”. Everything in Dr.McGill (gently) screams great posture, profound integrity, wisdom of movement and, most importantly, joy. That’s your generative drive - time and stress tested. When I grow up, I want to be like Dr.McGill. Thank you, professor Huberman, for giving the general public this incredible opportunity to learn, not taking it for granted, and already making some changes to my personal Biblical week as well as the weeks of those I care about. Keep shining!
I think, now at 67, 85% is a lot different from 85% when I was 30. So I understand Dr. McGill’s hesitance to generalize. Wish he would have tried, but he is right that everyone is different, now, in the past and the future. After all my injuries when I was young I am glad I can still walk, jog a bit and lift some weights. Thanks for the discussion gentlemen.
@@harleybfilms read Back Mechanic and see if you can find patterns to your pain. If you have good days and bad days you probably can and can keep getting better.

For the first time in my life, I'm having foot pain after running. Feet are awesome. Surely you know someone who can help us learn how to keep our feet in great working order. Love you, dude.
Dr McGill is an authority on low-back. His books "Back Mechanic", and "Low Back Disorders" are classics! Remember as Dr McGill said in the interview: Every system in the body requires stress for optimal health. Think of the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system, the endocrine system, and even the psychological system. Stress is needed to create adaptation for robustness. Still, you cannot cross what's known as the tipping point because if you do, you start building cumulative trauma of some form whether it's emotional trauma psychologically or it's cumulative stress at the tissue level or at the level of the cell.
A "wealth of knowledge" - couldn't put it better! Can't wait for the 2nd episode with Dr. McGill!! Would be amazing to have an episode with Andrew Lock too 🙌

Hello Dr.Andrew Huberman! I wanted to express my gratitude for everything you do to make us more informed on so many interesting and useful topics. I was checking the language editions of your upcoming book Protocols: An Operating Manual for the Human Body and couldn't find Russian, unfortunately. Are you planning to add a Russian edition as well?
Thank you, mister Huberman and mister McGill, wonderful insight. Concerning the body types I heard some things about Doshas (Varta, Pitta and Kapha), which according to the ayurvedic and yogic holistic theory are body/personality types - like: more flexible, more strong/broader and so on. I found it quite fitting since it is a rough categorisation and I could use some of the information to improve how I handle myself (for example I as a creative fhying person should do calming and grounding stuff while my kapha friend should do more dynamic stuff in order to counter his passive but grounded and happy body-mentality). Honestly (and since I am not very well read into it yet and it is a big field in eastern medicine) I would love to have an Episode about Ayurvedic medicine/theory and what (and how) it is backed up by modern western medicine. thank you so much for the work you do, the translation and bringing information to the people is a big merit, may God pay you back with what is good for you.
If only I knew at 16 years old that racing motocross for 20 years would permanently destroy my spine and knees, I might have decided a different path. It was a lot of fun but the price paid is enormous. It removes so many options and activities for decades. I wish there was advice for young people to give them a view into a future of limited mobility and restricted range of things you can do in life.

McGill helped me understand how to approach back pain. Remember there is no such thing as non-specific back pain, and you can always identify triggers and go from there.
This was an outstandingly good episode. I have McGill’s Back Mechanic but it was so good to listen to the man himself. A man who says don’t know and it depends alot is a guy you can trust. I have felt for ages that deadlifts may not be for me despite the fact that everyone says you should do them. This episode was a revelation in terms of other exercises you can think about and McGill’s Biblical Week. A superb listen and I will listen again but this time watch it rather than just listen
Thank you for getting Dr. McGill on your show! He is amazing. His book Back Mechanic changed my life, after a whole year of constant back pain caused by two bulged disc at the same time. Very cool show, as usual. Looking forward to read your book, too.
What an absolutely incredible episode! Omg, what a relatable conversation with so many relatable circumstances combined with valuable laters of tangible options. I love the multifaceted way that he thinks. You did such a great job Doc Andrew and it was cool to see you so incredibly immersed.
It was a fantastic episode. You knocked it out of the ball park -- again!!!! 👏🏼❤️👏🏼👏🏼
Such a great specialist and wise man! Thank you both for your mission! 🙏
"A wealth of knowledge" - couldn't have said it any better. Can't wait for episode 2 with Dr. McGill!!!
Also very much looking forward to an interview with Andrew Lock 🙌
I knew about Dr Stuart from his 'McGill Big 3' excercises for core stability. This is my first time hearing from him and he is brilliant and amazing! Thank you for having him as podcast guest
Dear Andrew, first of all, thank you for everything that you do. You've changed so many lives out there!
Please please make an episode about pregnancy. 🤰🏼
Thank you. My mom has a back injury and is it debilitating so I'm happy I can get such an education like this
Maybe I can learn something that helps her.
The broad range-scope of this discussion and teaching is so relevant. As a 60 year old athlete, I learned a lot. Well worth my time. Thank you for your commitment and effort.
I love listening to and learning from Stuart, such an inspiring and great guy!
I love Dr McGill! There are not many out there knowing "the pain" so well. Thanks for having him as your guest. You too got along really well, I'd say 🙂
Thanks Dr. Stuart McGill. GREATLY appreciate your knowledge and wisdom. Your exercises helped heal and restore my lower back. Now, I'm stronger and better than ever. Soon, I will deadlift 855 lbs, squat 600 lbs+ and bench 425 lbs. And again, thanks for your knowledge and wisdom. Let's be GREAT! 🙏🙏
What was the problem and did you do anything other than the big 3?
@@Asc01111 Got injured lifting heavy and did exercises to recover from my injury. Lower back checked out and it's getting better now. Just a minor setback for a major comeback. Appreciate your concern. Keep being GREAT.
McGill is the name that pops up in every back pain forum, his teachings has saved my back from being in major pain
I am a Health, fitness and nutrition Coach. This podcast is GOLD 👏👏👏. Thank you both for this
14 years since ive read his book on this. Phenomenal.
Still working at it but i can sprint short bursts and ride a bike.......
A big thing for me was my hips!!! Keep em' loose!!!
Which of his books do you mean?
It was like the 5th edition of a title I cannot remember the exact name but I see he has many books since and I'm sure his newer ones have more tested and proven methods in them.
Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance is the name of the book I'm guessing he is talking about.
@Nmdresser yeah it was the 5th edition at the time I believe....
Stu was my favorite professor during my time at waterloo
Thank you so much, Dr. Stuart McGill and Dr. Huberman, for this incredibly informative and insightful episode. Dr. McGill, your expertise in spine biomechanics, back pain assessment, and rehabilitation is invaluable. The discussion on the most common sources of back pain, self-assessment techniques, and personalized recovery plans was enlightening. Your tips on training for lifelong fitness, reducing injury risk, and protecting our backs and joints are truly appreciated.
Much obliged
I have teared by lower back 2 years now and was so happy when I saw Dr. McGill talking about back pain. Unfortunately there's nothing talked about tears as I see from timestamps
This is my chance to be the first comment and let Huberman know (if he even reads this) that I love his podcasts and the high quality content and knowledge he shares for free. I learned quite a lot from these podcasts and it still contributes towards my own growth and development, Subsequently my clients and my further education and unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
Kind Regards from The Netherlands.
I was still too late even though I was the 5th viewer.. Awww.
I can’t thank you enough for this episode. I’m currently struggling with back pain, and this episode was like a gift, helping me understand its various causes and possible treatments. A big thank you to Dr. McGill for sharing your knowledge and to Prof. Huberman for conducting such an informative interview.
Dr. McGill’s research helped heal a debilitating condition for me. I wish everyone with back pain, including professional athletes, could find him
Dreamt about a family-member's back-pain issues last night and was thinking about it when this pops-up. I believe you have brought actionable, usefull information to so-many people that it is now statistically unlikely for at least one of your viewers to not have the exact next topic you're going to discuss on their mind the moment you post it. Thank you for your work, Prof. Huberman! ^^
The timing of this video is unreal! Hurt my back yesterday after being sick for 10 days (stiff from inactivity) and too eagerly going back to resistance training without proper warm-up and stretching.
This interview started almost affected, but took a productive turn, revalatioon on not going all out every day when you're older. A wake up call for me.
Thank you Andrew
Guy that plays soccer down at Mayfield
The knowledge you've shared with me has allowed me to heal significant neurological damage. I appreciate you Andrew 🙏
Listened to many McGill podcasts, this is by far one of the best.
Stu McGill really helped me turn a corner in helping my back issues
Been in pain since 2003, and still am to this day
But learning from him has helped me more than I can ever thank him
So excited to hear this one
No, you & 3 other ppl who didn’t actually listen. #1 back expert on the planet and you didn’t learn a thing. Says more about you
This is extraordinary.
I’m keen to listen to this I’m 22 and feel some pain in my lower back can’t get it looked at at the moment trying my best to get better
yoga
@@harleybfilms read Back Mechanic and see if you can find patterns to your pain. If you have good days and bad days you probably can and can keep getting better.
I just thought of looking up an episode on back pain today, then i saw this was uploaded a day ago. Thanks Andrew for getting McGill to speak on the topic.
Thank you SO much for digging further into this topic, very useful and practical as alot of time is spent sitting these days! You continue to bring SO MUCH VALUE to free to all of us. Dedicated fan here, since the beginning. Proud of you you my man!
Enjoyed very much the podcast with Dr. Prof. McGill, exceptional professional.
I improved my posture in my chair unconsciously while listening to this episode! Thanks Dr. McGill for the great information
This could not have better timing

Oh wow I feel ya
Same man
SAME!!
same omg
Wonderful Andrew! I've pre-ordered three of your books to give to my family. I would love to hear all about caring for your feet. I'm a 61-yr-old female, in excellent physical condition. For the first time in my life, I'm having foot pain after running. Feet are awesome. Surely you know someone who can help us learn how to keep our feet in great working order. Love you, dude.
Thank you!! Super awesome interview!! We are soo blessed and lucky to have you both. This is extremely valuable and very much appreciated!!
Haven't seen two men being this respectful to each other ever before!
Awesome video! I’m a physical therapist and I’ve learned so much from him and I agree about the dead lift with social media is just gone way overboard
A professor of biomechanics who thinks like an OT, extraordinary. I have the utmost respect for Dr McGill.
Such a pleasant conversation! Keep it up Professor Huberman!!! 💪🏼
Gold! Thank you so much for such amazing conversation.
Is great. I do it at 0.75 speed and find it helps a lot if I get tight or uncomfortable in my lower back. Thank you!
I am positive that this clarified my assumptions concerning the deadlift.
Thank you Andrew
A "wealth of knowledge" - couldn't put it better! Can't wait for the 2nd episode with Dr. McGill!!
Would be amazing to have an episode with Andrew Lock too 🙌
Loved this podcast, Postural restoration institute helped me tremendously. My right eye started dominating all my vision and my left eye kinda went dormant. This was a big source to my back pain im all better now
I would love an episode on asthma and natural remedies! There are many people with this chronic problem and I can’t imagine there’s something we can’t do about it.
As someone with a herniated disc, this man has helped me so much with his work.
I learned so much from this podcast episode that I went out and purchased Dr. McGills book “Back Mechanics”.
Sooo little views! Such an amazing person. Thank you for your books, cured my back pain ❤
Professional McGill (Emeritus now) is and was a true professional. Thank you for such an insightful and deep conversation about the spine.
Love you Andrew, thanks for helping me and lots of others. All the best!
bravo Andrew, this imo, is your finest episode/guest yet
thank you both for this knowledge shared
Thank you ANDREW for this PODCAST with DR STUART MCGILL 👌👍❤
If only I knew at 16 years old that racing motocross for 20 years would permanently destroy my spine and knees, I might have decided a different path. It was a lot of fun but the price paid is enormous. It removes so many options and activities for decades. I wish there was advice for young people to give them a view into a future of limited mobility and restricted range of things you can do in life.
Would 16 year old you have listened? I know I (now 35) would have told me to “shut up old man” and continued to believe I was invincible 😂
My dad had to stip mountain biking and certain exercising because of back pain. I will watch this whole thing in hopes to help him
